Updated at 6:30 p.m ET: U.S. Muslims are seeing a spike in hate calls and are concerned about possible retaliatory attacks on domestic mosques following the fatal attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya and protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.
“We’re starting to get hate calls and we’d already seen a wave of anti-Muslim incidents,” Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on Arab-Islamic Relations in Washington, D.C., told NBC News on Wednesday.
“Our first thought is condemning the attacks. Obviously this is something we’re concerned about,” he said. Muslims are feeling insecure, he added.

The Muslim civil rights group later Wednesday held a news conference to condemn the attacks in Libya and Egypt.
Libyan Ambassador to the United States Ali Suleiman Aujali holds a news conference along with leading American Muslims and other faith leaders. He is expected to condemn the murder of Ambassador Christopher Stevens at an American consulate in Libya.
The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three embassy staffers were killed in the assault on the Benghazi consulate, which was stormed by Islamist gunmen. Another assault was mounted on the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.
On Tuesday, CAIR issued a statement urging Muslims to ignore the distribution of what it called the “trashy” anti-Islam film blamed by some for the attacks.

Nihad Awad, executive director of CAIR, said:
"We urge that this ignorant attempt to provoke the religious feelings of Muslims in the Arabic-speaking world be ignored and that its extremist producers not be given the cheap publicity they so desperately seek. Those who created this trashy film do not represent the people of America or the Christian faith. The only proper response to intentional provocations such as this film is to redouble efforts to promote mutual understanding between faiths and to marginalize extremists of all stripes.”
President Obama, alongside Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, condemns "in the strongest terms" the "outrageous and shocking attack" that claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
On Wednesday, Awad said CAIR condemns the attacks in Libya and Cairo: "The actions of the attackers are totally inexcusable and un-Islamic."
An FBI spokesperson told NBC News on Wednesday that the agency has extensive nationwide community outreach through special agents and field offices to local Muslim communities.
Ambassador Stevens was 'courageous and exemplary,' Obama says
“We encourage anyone who thinks they are being threatened or intimated to contact us or law enforcement right away,” the FBI said.
In Rutherford County, Tenn., where the Islamic Center for Murfreesboro went through threats, attacks and a court fight to open last month, the sheriff’s office said on Wednesday it was unaware of any threats or protests following the Libya and Egypt attacks.
NBC's Brian Mooar reports on the reactions from President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney to the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that lead to the murders of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans .
“We will respond to protect the Islamic Center,” sheriff’s spokesperson Lisa Marchesoni told NBC News.
Ossama Bahloul, the center's imam, told NBC News, that the center will continue to pay the overwhelming cost of security to protect the center "due to the past history of violence and threats that have been aimed at The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro along with the current concerns."
Bahloul also said the center "condemns in the strongest possible words" the killings in Libya and attack in Cairo.
The New York Police Department told NBC News that there was no new threat, but as a precaution it would ramp up security at numerous religious institutions, including Coptic Christian churches, synagogues and mosques.

On Aug. 6, a mosque in Joplin, Mo., was burned to the ground. The same mosque was the subject of an attemped arson a month earlier.
In France, vandals smeared human feces on the doors of a mosque in Limoges sometime between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. There was no immediate indication, however, that the desecration was linked to the unrest over the film. The doors were daubed with neo-Nazi graffiti in July, news agencies said.
Hassan Shibly, executive director of the Florida Council on American Islamic Relations in Tampa, Fla., said if an attack on a mosque occurred it would be hard to know who would be retaliating against what.
“When somebody knocks on my door at CAIR, I just hope I don’t hear a gunshot," Shibly told NBC News. "There are a lot of crazies out there promoting hate.”

The Muslim Brotherhood has vowed to destroy the US by our own systems (legal, government, education, religion, etc.). They intend to undermine our country from within. How do they do that? They get some "activists" within our country to complain about descrimination, harrassment, and racism. They get some lawyers to "protect" their interests and have other religions removed from the public eye while forcing their vision on us.
Practicing Muslims herehave very little to worry about. We are generally tolerant of others. Yes, there may be random acts of violence, but with 300+ million of us you have to expect a few lugnuts. Remember that here in the US they make virgin Mary's out of elephant poop and it's "a joke" or "a commentary", a crusifix in urine "a statement", etc. One anti-Muslim video and it's an "international incident" and "an offense". It's time to realize that equal isn't equal, some religions are being actively destroyed while others are actively are mobilizing.
CAIR, well I think of them as much as "activists" and as I think they are out there for upholding rights. Don't think it's just out of the goodness of their hearts that they are "concerned" now. I'd suggest watching them carefully.
What I would be afraid of if we attack Muslims here in the States, word would spread, and you can bet we would see another 9-11! They would come over here and bomb us! I wouldn't put that past this. It's gettin' scary! I am sure there are extremists here now also.

It never ceases to amaze me how little people really know about these religions. We really are talking about three religions here. As for age, Judaism is some 5,000 years old, Christianity 2,000 and Islam 1400. All three believe in the SAME god, simply use different terms in reference. By the way. the word Alah is simply the Arabic word for god, not the name of their god. All three religious texts are interrelated. The Christian Bible contains the Jewish religious text in the Old Testament while the Islamic Koran contains most of what is in the Bible simply stated in a different manner. One other thing that I would bet most evangelicals do not know or refuse to accept is that Jesus is a very important figure in Islam, a major prophet, just as he is to Jews. These religions have far more in common than they have differences. The ignorance out there is mind boggling.
@mk1, you've stated exactly what I know to be true. Being a Christian with a Muslim son-in-law, I find we agree on so much, it is amazing. He said those who claim to be Muslim and are violent are not true Muslims and are a disgrace to Islam. He belongs to a branch of Islam that is persecuted by more aggressive Muslims (i.e., Saddam Hussein).

Think again. This book will tell you what is really going on. Look - we give money because we are buying peace and promoting our interests. People who have a problem with us "giving" money - understand that every civilized country participates in this. I want them, in video to state that this is wrong so that they can't play both sides. You can't be friends to both sides. They have to choose and not be silent. I want them to vow that they will give up Islam if it means that these sort of attacks continue. (I mean the ordinary Muslim who states that they don't believe in it, not the organization spokespersons. Maybe if a million moderates rise up, ordinary Muslims from around the world can take heart and take back their religion from the whack jobs that are currently running the religion.)

When I was a younger man I was the member of a "group". When I found that I did not agree with the doctrines of the group, I tried to use intelligent rhetoric to change some of the "group's" beliefs. When I found that I could not change their beliefs, I quit the group and denounced their beliefs to distance myself from the "virus" that was spreading among the mindless. For those that don't know, a "virus" has no mind, it just spreads without reason, leaving death and destruction in its path, making no apologies for its evil. We, including peaceful muslims, must stand together against extremism, not try to excuse it by mentioning events that happened hundreds or thousands of years ago, or the few violent actions of a handful of christians (or any other religion). In essence it is about the human condition with little or no correlation to organized religion. When a technologically (not morally) superior culture interacts with a less technical culture the results have been the same through out history, it doesn't go well for the natives. Some examples of Christian (all) Presidents sending US troops foreign lands for reasons that have nothing to do with protecting America? I think that I can make an argument for the examples you list that some part of American interests were being protected. So don't start with HR Bush and the first Gulf war. We all enjoyed the benefits of a decade of cheap oil. Right or wrong our "interests" lifestyle and prosperity were protected.
You may have stopped burning us but you haven't stopped condemning us. I stopped a little old lady one day as she was about to step into an intersection (I saw a Jaguar coming and knew it wasn't planning on stopping) kept her from stepping into the crosswalk. The Jag's fender caught her walker and flipped it to the side. Why do you say "you"? You assume that I am a christian but I am not. Anyway you have not been burned at the stake have you? Of course they don't like the idea of witchcraft (whatever that means these days), it is against their religion. And the threat of "burning in Hell" shouldn't bother you (other then the rejection associated with the statement of course) if you don't believe in it. Also keep in mind that you mentioned "a little old lady", probably "old school", so she was possibly even scared of you. If you're going to make it obvious that you are a "witch" (the pentagram for example), it might be a good idea to explain to people what you do exactly as a witch, and that you are a good person, because witches were, and maybe still are, thought to cast evil spells on people (at least in western countries).

Something along the lines of the CAIR issuing a statement that it will not be sending financial support to any overseas Islamic groups until the Imam of the Mosque in Mecca denounces and excommunicates those involved in the attack in Libya, Egypt and yes New York 11 years ago.
The problem is finding a peaceful muslim to do that.
American Muslims are one of our greatest assets in derailing Muslim extremism. I would like to see much more coverage given to the Muslim rebuke of this mindless violence in order to marginalize those who pervert their religion. Tell your fellow Muslims around the world in a clear voice that they should treat insults against their religion like the buzzing of flies around a donkey pile. I'm not even sure this outbreak of violence was due to the YouTube film, it sounds planned and coordinated.
There are plenty of American Muslims that condemn these actions against Americans. They do not get air time like the radical ones do.

No! Ignorance speaks volumes. There have been LOTS of apologies. Look it up! The head of Libya apologized--and there were many pro-American rallies there too. Problem is hatred sells much better to the masses than love and peace.
