4 dead, 8 injured after driver crashes into Las Vegas bus stop

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police investigate an accident scene after a car crashed into a bus stop, killing four people and injuring eight, in Las Vegas on Thursday. Police said they suspect the driver was drunk and speeding.

Updated at 6:15 p.m. ETAt least four pedestrians are dead after a speeding driver crashed into a Las Vegas bus stop on Thursday.

Police suspect the driver was drunk when the speeding vehicle crashed into a bus stop at about 6:25 a.m. PT, the Las Vegas Sun reported. In addition to the four fatalities, at least eight people were reported injured.

"It's a pretty horrific scene out here," Las Vegas police officer Laura Meltzer told The Associated Press, explaining that at least some of the four people in the vehicle had to be removed from the car after the crash.

Meltzer also told the AP all the victims appear to be adults and were apparently pedestrians who were waiting at the bus stop, which is located on Spring Mountain Road east of Decatur Boulevard in Las Vegas.

Unsubstantiated reports said the Chevorlet Monte Carlo could have been going 100 mph when it went airborne and hit the bus stop, the Sun reported.

“We actually had a police officer who was fueling up at the 7-11 at the corner," Las Vegas police Sgt. Richard Strader told the newspaper. "He saw the vehicle go through the intersection, basically bottomed out and then caught air it was going so fast.”

Four people were killed and eight others injured when a car slammed into a bus stop in Las Vegas, NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

The surviving driver has injuries, and police say the driver has been charged with four felony counts of driving under the influence causing death, the Sun reported.

"First responders said they smelled alcohol and he even said something to the effect that he had been drinking," Strader told the AP.

The driver and the victims have not been identified.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I lived there for 14 years and never felt safe driving -- the 24-hour nature of LV meant one could encounter drunk / drugged drivers at any time, day or night.

Being drunk at 6am and going 100mph on a city street - what could go wrong? 3 passengers not smart enough to say; hey, dumb ass, slow down?

Back when I drank, and when I drove, the whole time I was saying; don't get caught...I wonder what this Darwin award winner was saying to himself? I sure am cool - what ya think guys - ain't I cool...I should be on my cell phone too, then I'll be really cool.

So there were 4 people in the vehicle when it crashed, and some of them had to be removed? Does that make sense in the context of the story? Not to me...

TavylHunt - I agree the writing is awful. The story says there 8 dead and 4 injured an all victims were pedestrians...but also says that four people had to be removed from the vehicle. Don't we assume the passengers are victims - either dead or seriously injured? Either way, this a-hole will hopefully never enjoy the freedom to get behind a vehicle or leave a prison again.

The people were part of the car at that point. Why is this rap legal and marijuana is not? Seriously this is getting ridiculous.

NOPE, does NOT make sense (at all)!! NBC staff = lame!

@Jeff Martin, I believe the article said " 8 injured, 4 dead, and the 4 dead were all pedestrians waiting at the bus stop. That would mean all occupants of the car 'survived', but from the looks of the car...that is hard to believe. With such terrible writers, it's hard to know if what your reading is factual or not!?

yeah you ever see a person get stuck inside the windshield in a head on crash I don't mean the driver or passenger of the vehicle I mean a pedestrian gets hit and the person gets stuck inside the windshield or wind up in the car from the force and speed of the vehicle. I'm a paramedic and I see some crazy chit.

Lance, I think paramedics are among the unsung heroes. (The best surgeons in the world can't save a patient who doesn't make it to the hospital, right?) Very few people have what it takes to do what you do, see what you see, and not go at least a little crazy from all that crazy chit you mentioned. I hope I never have to meet you, and I wish you all the best (and lots of slow shifts).

4 dead, 8 injured is the correct total and they were all pedestrians. I do not believe there was anyone else in the car except the driver. Others at the scene heard the driver clearly state "Did I reach the liquor store" when they were trying to extricate him from the car. He had no clue as to what had happened, Vegas is not a pedestrian friendly place. Drivers in this city feel entitled, that is the only word I can think of. I'm from Boston and thought I had seen everything, boy was I wrong. I've lived in Vegas now for 8 years and some of these drivers are so dangerous its amazing they past the drivers test. Our streets here can be compared to highways back home, 4 lanes each way on the main streets. Drivers in the left lane who have to turn right have no problem in cutting through each lane at the last minute to make the turn all those in their way be damned. Nevada law states if you strike a pedestrian outside a crosswalk its the pedestrians fault no matter the circumstances, if your not in a crosswalk its your own fault.

machspeeddemon...sorry, I just had to point out your name considering the topic...ironic? (I hate to use the word "ironic" people seem to wig out on its use). Paramedics are heroes - too bad they are not paid like heroes.

It didn't say they had to be removed from inside the car but that they had to be removed from the car. 100 mph, some of them got stuck in the radiator grill.

people its obvious that the politicians are not competent enough to make sound decisions they are under the influence of alcohol and the source is coming from the white house were its is known to be brewing beer and distributing it to the congress and senate .we must as citizens who care about our country impose and administer alcohol testing to the politicians before they are able to vote on any decision, so we the people will be protected from drunken politicians.

Wow, I really don't get the previous comment at all - what does this have to do with politics, except on a very, very general level? Off The Strip, Las Vegas is a big and varied place with great neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods. No one should make any assumptions other than it was a drunk driver, who could get behind the wheel anywhere. It IS amazing that it's not illegal to be this drunk, but it IS illegal to smoke a joint. THAT is political.

It just happened in a Philly suburb two days ago. Five guys were waiting for a bus when a young woman "lost control" of her SUV, hit a pole and plowed into the bus stop. She injured 3 guys and killed 2 of them...

That's right in China town. It's a crazy road to drive on, but worth the risk to drop by Ronald's Donuts which you could see if the camera panned to the right.

When I first moved out here from CT, I contemplated getting a motorcycle to save on gas because compared to the so few days you could ride in CT, it seemed like a perfect idea. Then I asked around and everyone said the same thing. It's dangerous as hell because of all the other crazy drivers.

I've sat at intersections and seen people blow right through red lights at full speed. And my guess is that it's not all drunk people. You got a lot of folks here in this town that come from countries with very few if any traffic rules. And of course you got the texters.

Another rather sad part of this is that in Vegas you can sleep it off in your car in the parking lot and not get a DUI as you would in some other states. I lived in Vegas for about 5 years and one evening after having a few too many, rather than risk driving drunk I simply slept it off in the car. One policeman did wake me but only to make sure I was "ok", and when I told him I was sleeping it off rather than DUI, he made a statement something like "wise move" and went on his way, I went back to sleep.

The driver's life is now ruined and he's looking at serious jail time. But at least he still has his life - unlike the four people he killed and the others he injured.

Look up Doctor James Corasanti. Amherst, NY. Drunk, Texting and speeding. Driving a BMW 7 series. Ran down and left to die an 18 year old girl. The Defense was an outrage and the jury was somehow totally illiterate or brain dead. The amount of evidence against him was overwhelming. The Jury found hime guilty of a misdemeanor. The only consolation was the Judge gave him the maximum by law. One year in jail. Their is no defense. Lawyers are scumbags.
