Woman found alive after getting stuck in freezer at Tulsa home

An Oklahoma woman was found alive in her deep freezer days after she was reported missing. Family members say she may have been disoriented and attempted to take shelter, KJRH's Breanne Palmerini reports.

Updated at 7:10 p.m. ET: A woman who vanished last weekend was found alive in a freezer in west Tulsa, Okla., after possibly climbing inside to take shelter from a storm, NBC station KJRH reported.

Theresa Christian, 59, disappeared Saturday and was discovered Wednesday with severe freezing of the legs, KJRH said. She was listed in serious condition, KJRH reported.

Her son told the station he is relieved she was found alive.

"She wasn't answering the phone or anything like that, so I came by here (Tuesday) night, about 10:30, knocked on the door, knocked on the door, and I couldn't get a response or anything," Christian's son, Jermal Stewart, told KJRH.

Tuesday, Christian's brother, William Andy Jr., entered the apartment near W. 23rd Ave. and Southwest Blvd. and did not find her.

"We went through the house calling out her name and stuff and couldn't get a response or anything," Andy told KJRH.

Stewart went back to the apartment early Wednesday and had the apartment's maintenance crew unlock the door again.

"I heard her say, 'Help me, help me,'" Stewart said.

Stewart told KJRH he opened a closet door in the kitchen and saw his mother sitting in the freezer with the lid open, unable to move.

Family members say she may have been disoriented. “My mom takes a lot of medications, and it mixes with her system and it don't give her an appetite at all," Stewart told KJRH.

Police told reporters they suspect Christian crawled into the freezer to take shelter.

There was no severe weather in the area on Saturday, KJRH reported.

"Possibly she thought maybe there was a tornado coming, but they're not really sure why or how she got there," Tulsa police Cpl. Daisy Vallely told KJRH.

No foul play is suspected, KJRH reported.

I hope she recovers and has a good life from here on in.

Compassion from everyone on here is really lacking. Amazing what the human race is becoming. I hope all of you on here that are trying to be funny never have to go through anything similar and then listen to people disrespect your family member.

I'm glad that she survived, and amazed that if she couldn't open the door from inside, that she was somehow able to have enough oxygen. There are a lot of worse, and far sadder stories about freezers than this one.

Most of these evil people that's commenting, see the picture of a black woman, so they go crazy with all the hate. Still with a black president and all, you still have whites sick with hate and racism.

You are a dumbass. Who has said anything racist thus far? Who gets into a FREEZER when a Tornado is coming? Seems like the door would get blocked by objects thrown around house after a storm. So ya, that wa dumb.

The article states she was sitting in the freezer with the lid open, This indicates it was a chest freezer, These types of freezers do not normaly have latches and the lids usually have a magnetic seal, They do usually have a key lock but you have to lock that from the outside, Since she was sitting in the chest freezer with the lid open I am wondering why her son did not find her on the first check of the house. I also wonder why it took so long for the sons to finally decide to go look for her when she failed to answer the phone.

This woman needs a full mental evauluation after the medical care and it is likely sho should not be living on her own.

Most of you are idiots...down right mean spirited. Next time something happens to you out your normal life that is uncomfortable or hurtful, it's called Karma.

Re-read the article...she DID NOT have the freezer door closed (she would not have survived that long in a closed freezer). She simply stepped inside and probably squatted (for shelter) in the freezer.

After some time passed she was unable to stand back up, this was most likely one of those square small chest freezers. It was, after all, located in a closet..couldn't have been to big.

I won't even start on all of the miss spelled words...again a bunch of idiots!!!

As fascisthater pointed out to deedee, she misspelled misspelled while criticizing other posters' spelling. Additionally, there's an "o" missing from "to big" and let's not get started on deedee's punctuation. You would do well, deedee, to be less critical of your fellow posters. You know, people in glass houses....

As far as the debate or wagers as to whether this lady will lose her legs, the article referred to "severe freezing of the legs." Seems like a reasonable bet that there is an amputation in this lady's future not only because of the freezing but the possible emboli that formed because of the obvious limited mobility.

Lastly, we have no way of knowing what medical or psychological conditions this lady has. Some maladies don't need advanced age to present themselves. It is fortunate that she has family that cares about her. Not everyone posting here can say that. Therefore, it might be advisable for all of us to be a little kinder in our assessment of her situation. After all, there but for the grace....

That being said, some of these comments are really funny. I just hope we can laugh at ourselves when our time comes. And, it will.

@babs - Air/Oxygen was not an issue...The woman was found sitting in the freezer inside of a closet. She was unable to get out of the freezer. Perhaps the medications she is taking had a lot to do with her inability to get out of the freezer. You can tell she was sitting in the freezer because her legs were the only area of the body that had frost bite. If she had been locked in completely yes she would have asphyxiated and been completely frozen.

What??? Even if you did for some strange reason take shelter from a storm in a freezer, why wouldn't you first unplug the freezer? Seriously, though, I could think of many better places to hole up during a storm. Seems like there's more going on in this story, like maybe some mental issues.

I'm so very happy that this woman was found alive. For all of you laughing and making your jokes, SHAME ON YOU. She could be your mother, or your sister, or your next door neighbor. And for those who are making it into a race issue, get a life.

Alzheimers/dementia is affecting younger and younger patients all the time. Especially those already on some form of mood altering medications such as anti-depressants/tranquilizers. We had a local man go missing a few months ago and come to find out he was a 52yr old Alzheimers patient. He was found hours later safe and sound thankfully eating at a local pizza parlor.

Watch out for your neighbors or relatives, especially those living alone.

There is a picture of a nice looking woman who very well might be on medications for a medical and/or psychological and you can tell she has family and friends that love her and she is so lucky they found her. You can tell her son really loves her and was choked up over the thought of losing her. No politics, no race involved-a human interest story and I am glad she is okay.

I am just curious as to what kind of freezer? Did I miss that in the article? The only freezers I have ever really seen in someones home is the one above a fridge which I assume is much to small for her ha. Or the entire freezer units that convenince store owners may have to put their icecream in.

The article states she was sitting in the freezer with the lid open so this would eliminate suffocation but she certainly could have died from hypothermia, I wonder why she did not just stand up and get out, The article mentions a possible reaction to her medication.

I knew that there are ignorant people in the world, but you people take the cake. A woman is stuck in her freezer for a few days, and all you @!$%#s can do is make fun of her. I read a few that was nice. Most of them just made fun of her. Stop and think about this, what if it was a family member of yours? How would you react to that? I am glad that she is doing good. I hope that she has a full recovery and lives a very long healthy and happy life.

Dear Angela, (and all others who think the funny answers are wrong...)

Have you ever heard of comic relief? This is a bad situation with a good outcome. I know FOR SURE that IF, indeed, it was someone in my family, once the crisis was over and all was well,

BET YER HOOHAH WE'D HAVE FUN WITH IT. My Mom would be right there in the thick of it with us!

What if somebody at work closes the door without realizing someone else was in there? Or what if the door is set to lock, and they weren't aware? Huh???? @!$%# happens, get the @!$%# over yourself.

What if somebody at work closes the door without realizing someone else was in there?

OSHA laws have required large walkin freezers to have 2 way latches on them allowing a person to open the door from both outside and inside.

Well, she was on meds--we don't know for what, but maybe for problems moving around. So once she got there in a panic, and sat in the cold for awhile, she may not have been able to move again, or at least not enough to get out.

That was a previous post of YOURS!!!!!!!!

And then we have: Can it, isis. You're assuming an awful lot.

LET'S BREAK THAT DOWN SHALL WE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You AGREED. YOU AGREED in a previous post that this woman was on meds! And when I say she could be on meds or mentally impaired you ACCUSE me of assuming! YET YOU ARE THE ONE WHO AGREED WITH IT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Don't you DARE tell me I'm assuming things when YOU are the one who agreed with it in a previous comment of YOURS. You REALLY need to pay attention to YOUR posts before you start telling people they are assuming and to "can it".

The lid was not closed so she had air. She simply climbed in there likely stoned out of her mind on Opioid painkillers and copped a nod which resulted in the impaired legs to climb out.

Dudeareeno, glad you made a decent comment finally. I too hope this woman will recover fully. I have a disabled family member on medications for physical aliments which sometimes cause her confusion if she doesn't take food or misses her dosage. It can get scary at times so we call her often to follow up.

As far as so many of these inappropriate comments, I have come to the conclusion, stories like this provide the perfect opportunity to reveal the true humanity, or lack there of in so many people who respond to stories like this. While lots of folks can go about their daily activities and put on all sorts of masks to family, coworkers and friends, it is in response to what happens to strangers, and the ability to have compassion that shows the depth of a person's real character. Especially when reading their stories on the Internet while sitting behind a screen where none knows your name.

Laughing at suffering is never funny. It is one thing for the person to comment about themselves and laugh. Personally, humor is the parachute in life. I never go a day without wearing mine and value its incredible power.Poking fun is altogether different and those who do so are inappropriate, insensitive and it's in bad taste. Show your highest qualities by setting the bar high and respecting everyone. It empowers your life.

A better way to judge the real character of people would be to watch how they treat other people. Commentary on public forums? Not so much.

The problem with you, aside from your judgemental pomposity, is that you want to be the one who decides the color of everyone else's "humor parachute".

prplbeedoo, After some serious events in my life, I learned long ago to laugh when things have gone wrong. I can also appreciate when silly things happen to others and they aren't harmed. But I draw the line when people are injured, enduring suffering and pain. Especially over a period of days. There is a difference between laughing at people and laughing with them. The golden test being, if they heard the comment would they laugh also or would they feel hurt, offended or embarrassed or if you said it to a loved one, same thing? It seems those suffering from mental conditions for whatever reason are still fair game to many people. One can expect a certain portion of the population to get their kicks making fun of such people and what happens to them.I feel badly for what this woman must have gone through because I had a sibling nearly freeze to death with it touch and go. So reading so many insensitive comments, I don't think it is a matter of me needing to lighten up. I am just reminded, how precious life is and we all are on our own journey at our own pace.

I live in Tulsa, and this story is the talk of the town. She crawled in a chest-type "deep freezer" to protect herself from a tornado that wasn't there. We had some strong winds that day at about 4PM -- some power lines and tree limbs came down -- but it was bright and sunny. She was a nut to crawl into the freezer under such circumstances, though I CAN imagine it might be a decent place to hide if there really was a tornado...

Still, I wonder how she was able to breathe in the freezer (which should seal when closed). And I wonder why she was not able to open the lid and crawl out when she wanted to. I hope to hear more details of this mentally disturbed woman's experience!

I think you hit the nail on the head with "mentally distirbed". Stewart told KJRH he opened a closet door in the kitchen and saw his mother sitting in the freezer, unable to move.

Sounds like she had the lid opened when he found her. If she climbed in there because she thought there was a tornado why did she stay in there when she started to freeze? Why didn't she call out when her sons came over Tuesday night? If she was stuck in a freezer for 3 or 4 days how come her legs are the only things frozen? And how did she manage to not run out of air? I don't thinks she's stupid, I think she's got some mental issues.

Not a real good place to hide because most freezers have a seal on the door to keep the cold in and the hot out, Once inside if something falls on the lid then you are stuck inside with no way out and you run out of air quite quickly.

Still, I wonder how she was able to breathe in the freezer (which should seal when closed). And I wonder why she was not able to open the lid and crawl out when she wanted to. I hope to hear more details of this mentally disturbed woman's experience!

The article indicates that when the son found her she was sitting in the freezer with the lid open, She evidently have enough sense to keep the lid open but after sitting in a cold freezer it is possible her legs cramped up and she was unable to move, The cold does strange things to the body, The article also states she may have had a reaction to her medication, This does not automatically mean that the medication was for mental issues it could have been for a physical/medical condition, People have different reactions to medications and reactions can occur even if a person has been on the same meds for a long time without a problem.

She is quite lucky, If I were her I would be a bit upset that my sons did not come looking for me sooner.

Well, she was being medicated--we don't know for what, but maybe for problems moving around. So once she got in there in a panic, and sat in the cold for a while, she may not have been able to move again, or at least not enough to get out. Why didn't she call out earlier? Maybe she had passed out or was asleep. Can't assume anything.

Does anyone really "WIN" a Darwin Award?... that just seems like an oxymoron...

Clearly the lady has serious mental issues and needs more supervision. A very sad situation.
It easily could have ended up far worse.

2012 DARWIN AWARD GRAND PRIZE goes to the MORON in Montana who decided to create his own Bigfoot sighting. dressed in a Milspec ghillie suit and stood out on a dark hwy late at night and got his DUMBASS run over by not 1 but 2 cars. I sure hope he did this BEFORE he had children! of course if he did someone should neuter them before it becomes too late! I have a dog with a higher IQ!!!

Yes, I will agree that the woman should have thought about it first and at least turned the power off or the temp all the way down before getting in. But from the way the article is written it sounds that she may loose part or even most of her legs.

I take issue with those of you that post cruel or mean responses because I have no use of my legs or any part of my body from the chest down from a car accident. So I know that life ahead for this woman may proove to be very difficult.

So if you don't have anything constructive to post why don't you just take a pass and keep your thoughts to yourself there is enough garbage on the Internet as it is..............

Thank you and well put! Comments shouldn't be about being clever and mean.

I wish her well. I'm glad that her son came back.

David you are right, you can't predict what a person will do if they believe their is a catistrophic event about to take place, poor woman is in critical condition and people are laughing, that would be like someone laughing at you for being paralyzed, what a bunch of morons.

....and if she can not learn to laugh a little at herself and life in general her future is indeed bleak. And before you go off on me David my disabilities are war related. I laugh at myself often, it is better than the frustration and self-pity.

As a previous poster pointed out I think this woman is mentally disturbed. Making fun of her for that and the potential disability she may now face is stupid and insensitive. What if this story was about your mother, father, wife, husband, friend, son or daughter (totherepublic)? Would you still think they should laugh at it while they're still struggling? While they don't know if their legs can be saved? It was days before anyone even came to check on her, sounds like she's pretty alone on a daily basis and maybe that loneliness was too much for her to deal with,

I agree, none of these people are funny. Compassion is a term that most of them could not define nor spell.

I'm sorry your disability has affected your sense of humor. May I recommend to you, in all seriousness, the autobiography of John Callahan, the quadriplegic cartoonist. It is titled "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot." For the record, I am a life member of Disabled American Veterans.

John Callahan! I miss that guy. I used to see him rolling around Portland, Oregon. He also published a graphic account of his life in a wheelchair in the "Portland's Permanent Press" newspaper, which is no more. John died a few years ago. May his stuff never go out of print. For mentioning him here, may you, denver bill 2, live the rest of your days and years with your humor intact and your spirit at peace.

Sounds like it was open and she was just sitting in it when they came back and found her.

If it was closed all that time she would have frozen to death if she didn't suffocate first.
