Police in Prince George's County, Maryland, are installing cameras...to watch their cameras.
Six speed cameras in Maryland have been vandalized since April, WTOP reported.
The cameras cost $30,000 to $100,000 to replace, so police have started installing surveillance cameras designed to catch vandals in the act.
A dozen of the new cameras will be in place by the end of the month, WTOP reported.
Police call it a matter of public safety, not an attempt to generate profit.

People will just shoot them from a distance. Putting up cameras probably wont change a thing here.
People need to challenge the legality of these cameras in court, by the thousands, until the government backs off. The key issue, whos driving? The photo is of a car, not the driver. But the owner gets the ticket whether they were driving or not. Its unfair prosecution. They need to prove who the driver was, and a camera of a license plate doesnt cut it.
impair the ability to see, some of these are sensitive to light so a laser beam directly in the lense will also render them useless and can be used from a great distance you can't be recognized if your to far away !! just saying
"Police call it a matter of public safety, not an attempt to generate profit." They really believe that we are stupid enough to believe these transparent lies? I hope all those cameras get destroyed. Screw cameras, screw Big-Brother, and screw all these nanny, Police Surveillance States. They are trying their best to turn America into NAZI Germany 1939.
i would like to install cameras in every government office. that would definately be for "public safety".
I am watching you watching me watching you watching me!
HHahahahahahh! "Police call it a matter of public safety, not an attempt to generate profit." suuuureee...
It may not be "profit", but to use an over-used nobama-ism, "Make no mistake" - it certainly is about revenue generation!
If they make money good for them, the only people paying are breaking the law.
Do you realize how many cameras you walk in front of in a single day? Grocery stores, malls (inside and out) department stores, 30 feet around any ATM machine, gas stations, public schools, convenience stores. Look up next time you are at a jewelry counter, those are not all sprinklers. Some locations have audio recordings from those lovely speakers piping music.
So...don't run the light and everything will by okay.
and how many grocery stores then mail you a $200 bill and threaten to come to your house with a gun if you don't pay up.
If we dont get rid of Obama and the BIG GOV the DEMs love then get used to more and more of this!
Wake up people! Vote him out Nov! For those of you looking for work or need to make money
This might help you because Obama sure isnt going to help you!
Of course it's not for profit, its for the children. That is why there are no hefty fines imposed.
they just fined a 2 year old for needing to take a piss, they don't care how old it's just about the greed for money
Unemployment is up, revenue is down, and these idiots are putting up job-killing cameras to guard what? Job-killing cameras?
Now, I can't speak for other areas, but at least in mine, we have a simple solution to traffic cams:
Two pieces of black construction paper - one for the front license plate, one for the back, and good old fashioned $1.99 hockey mask.
No plate number, no identity, no ticket.
Enough no-tickets and the cameras come down. So far, we've seen 119 of these eliminated. There are a couple that are going to be tough to get rid of though, as there's nowhere ahead of the camera to stop and put up your "papers", but we'll get them yet.
laser beams effectively impair the vision of the camera
Yes, but they're a pain to aim.
Law enforcement by remote control must end. Public safety my ass! It's all about $$$, always has been.
Think about this. For the cost of 1 or 2 cameras, you can pay a human police officer for a year!
And here's the bonus! He/she can do more than just one thing!!!
Sounds like tax dollars hard at work. What bull sh it. Just sounds like more stuff to break is what I'm reading.
I can see this in the news.. On Halloween, Werewolf,Witches, Vampires has caused million dollars of damage on camera's.If anyone who see them, report to your nearest police dept... >.<
All this flap about speed cameras, they are to make money for the city that uses them.Lakewood WA, left a speed camera on that was in a school zone, after school was out for the summer, excuse was that the catholic church school had summer activities there.BS. Reminded of something way back,a CB club(remember those?) gave two CB radios to the Missouri hiway patrol,The OIC said that one trooper using the CB could keep speed down on a long stretch of the interstate, the trooper would park his car on an overpass, listen to the CB, when traffic had slowed to a reasonable speed,The trooper would travel down the margin road to the next overpass, set up and slow traffic. The Major in charge said that one trooper would slow traffic to a safe speed on a long stretch of road, maybe only use half tank of gas and did not have to write any tickets. That every body was happy according to him.
please, tell me paul ryan is not behind this waste of money. if the government needs money that baddly why not cut the salaries of the congressmen?take away their perks. after all, they are bought and owned by big corporations so,they can keep paying them while they keep screwing us. these cameras are only there to make money. just like the new parking meters out there.they take our money, give us a slip to put on the dash and if we do not have a slip then you get a fine.no more parking at a meter that has time left over.just more money for the politicians to take away from the public.
good god:help us all.
Paul Ryan?...really.....this is the nanny state government of the progressive left....not Paul Ryan.
So they use OUR money to buy equipment they can use to seperate US from the rest of OUR money.....this government, local ,state and federal....is really f#cked up.
Almost all "speeding" tickets are frivolous, as speed is normally not the cause of most accidents. It could be a contributing factor, but hardly ever the cause of the accident.
Are the police and all law enforcement officers also under the same provisions as the general public, with no exceptions for them if caught speeding, either while off-duty or on-duty, unless of course on an official response to a call. Nor can any devices be installed in police vehicles that would allow the speed cameras to exempt their vehicles.
This would also pertain to all judges and politicians, no back door dismissal of their speeding violations.
Ok Let see-the cameras are NOT there to generate profit??? Yeah right and those green men that are messing with the cameras are not from Roswell!! I say if you are going to put up cameras make officers have to issue tickets themselves. Otherwise forbid it that you should ever loan your car to a friend son/daughter as the ones that gets the ticket is the OWNER of the car not the person that actually was driving!??! You just have to be ignorant to believe that much money is spent on cameras UNLESS money is being made on ticket revenues! Also remember no POLICE dept anywhere have QUOTAS that have to be met!! YUP! NADA!!! at least that was what the green eyed beiings told me!!!
So what if they really are. The problem is not the cameras watching the cameras. It is the people DESTROYING THE CAMERAS. Furthermore I hope they find the people doing it and MAKE THEM PAY FOR THE NEW CAMERAS.
Good! One of the big problems in this country today is a total lack of respect. Respect for property, respect for other people and their feelings and things. And I find it worse with Christians. They seem to think that since they are right they can demand that everyone march to their orders and treat them kindly but to everyone else who doesn't act like they want them to they can show any amount disrespect and disgusting behavior they want. I don't think that is how God sees it though. Instead of disrespecting others and their property they need to read the Bible first and remove that big board from their eye. In a nutshell a lot of them just don't get it!
Bull$^!t. This is absolutely a matter of revenue, not public safety. Yes speeding cars can cause an accident, but so can the car that is doing 15 mph under the speed limit and the people behind have to get over. The issue is not so much speed, but cars traveling at significant different speeds. So how about tickets to the slower drivers??? I am one of those that drives the actual posted limit, it does irritate me to see someone that pops in and out of traffic, just as much as the person driving 45 in a 65. Public Safety my @$$.
Speeders as well as slow pokes are all classified as public safety disasters. Hate to bust your bubble but there are more than one class of people that fall under public safety hazzards. It IS public safety but it is more like OBEYING THE LAW!!!
impair the ability to see, some of these are sensitive to light so a laser beam directly in the lense will also render them useless and can be used from a great distance you can't be recognized if your to far away !! just saying
Just do a records request for a list of the people caught on camera and see how fast the mayor and city council take the cameras down.
This is happening in PG County. What do you expect?
Liars.
If it was about public safety, they would not be charging people money for speeding. They'd make them do community service instead, or something similar.
No, its about the money. Its about greed.
Let's hope that before too long the cops will have to install cameras to watch the cameras that watch the cameras...
Make them too expensive, and the cameras will disappear, because ITS ABOUT THE MONEY, not public safety.
