The family of a 77-year-old woman dragged from her car during a traffic stop by police in Texas says a formal apology and anger-management training for the officer is needed to make things right, NBCDFW.com reported.
Lynn Bedford's videotaped arrest has gone viral, sparking opinions across the country. The video shows Sgt. Gene Geheb pulling Bedford, of Cleburne, from her sports utility vehicle after she did not hand over her license and refused to get out of the vehicle.
Her granddaughter, Aubrey McQue, sought the video from Keene police and made it public.
"There was 19 seconds from when he first initially asked her for her driver's license to when he laid his hands on her -- 19 seconds," she said.
The video shows that the officer requested Bedford's license four times before telling her that he would take her to jail if she did not give it to him.
After Bedford told him, "Well, go ahead," he opened her car door, grabbed her arm and asked her to step out of the vehicle 10 times. He pulled her from the vehicle after she said, "I will not."
McQue said the officer's use of force was excessive.
"The video does speak for itself," she said. "Not once did she refuse to give her driver's license to him. She said, 'I'll give it to you in a minute,' and no patience was afforded to her. He controlled the entire situation, and he made it go in the direction it did. He let it escalate; he controlled that."
The officer said he stopped Bedford after he clocked her going 66 mph in a 50-mph zone. The family is not disputing the speeding citation but is fighting the charge of failure to present a driver's license.
McQue said her grandmother was speeding because she had a bladder infection and needed to get to a bathroom. The road her grandmother was on did not have a public bathroom in sight, she said.
Cop drags woman, 77, from car after ID refusal
McQue said manners and common sense on the part of the officer would have resulted in a different outcome.
"I know from experience from senior citizens and elderly people that they don't have to move faster," she said. "They take a more leisurely pace to do things, and that's the respect afforded them because they've lived so long."
Keene city administrator Bill Guinn, who has known the family for 30 years, said he called after hearing about the incident and offered to arrange a sit-down meeting with the police department.
The Bedfords have declined. The family retained an attorney but said they don't plan a lawsuit at this time.
"I feel badly for what happened, but that's the way it happened," Guinn said. "It's not the way we want anyone to feel about Keene or to see Keene. Keene is a great town, but there are these things that happen."
Sleepless and tearful
Bedford's family said this has never happened to her before. Since the video became public, her home phone constantly rings, and she hasn't slept. The family said Bedford is embarrassed, feeling like her life has been reduced to a video and Internet opinion polls about her as a person.
McQue said she was speaking on Bedford's behalf because her grandmother can't talk about the incident without crying.
"An apology would be nice, because she really is embarrassed by this -- that people think that she's a criminal. She's not a criminal," she said.

Keene residents said they have noticed that Bedford's arrest is getting national attention.
"I have people call me from Chicago, one from Michigan, so I'm getting phone calls from people wanting to know what's going on in Keene," Dan Roberts said.
He said that everyone in town has their own opinion.
"I watched the video, and I think she was wrong," Roberts said. "She should've handed over her driver's license and ID, and it would've been all over."
But Rachel Jessup disagreed.
"More are siding with her because she's a 77-year-old lady," she said. "People feel bad for her."
"He's a cop," she said. "You expect police officers to be rational and handle situations in a more mature way."

I hate to see a 77 year old woman having to get yanked from her car. On the other hand the Law states you must provide your Drivers license and proof of insurance. If you refuse you will be arrested, period. Is that too hard to understand? Show your license get your citation and then you just go. Happens a million times a day around the country. Something wrong with that woman refusing which by Law states you must provide.
Yes, but is it right for only nineteen seconds to elapse before a physical effort is made against her? Over a no-I.D. situation? The officer escalated this incident by unnecessarily putting his hands on this woman... for doing nothing more than not handing over her information after he caught her speeding. Did he not think to run her license plate? Or stand by her open her door and wait for her compliance, and then call for another officer if he did not get it? She was not a physical threat, did nothing menacing to him, and did not to get dragged out of her vehicle for simply refusing to show I.D.
I think she got what she deserved by being arrested, but it was definitely handled in a hot-headed and unnecessary fashion. Heaven forbid this officer gets caught in a real confrontation with an actual dangerous driver; he'd probably be apt to whip his gun out and fire first, then ask questions.
The article says she didn't refuse to give him her driver license she said "just a minute" and in 19 seconds he defused the situation.
I'll bet if he'd given her 22 seconds she would have gotten out of the car and kicked his azz
She refused......she refused.......she refused......what about that do you not understand.....being 77 years old does not give you the right to break a Law, period! She had NO legal excuse to NOT show her license, period! A license plate does not show she is licensed or not...insurance papers also need to be provided. You are in the minority on this which you have that right to express your opinion. People by the thousands get pulled over every day for violations. She is not special! Stop making excuses for other people that never want to be accountable for their OWN actions. This is what is wrong with some folks. Excuses....excuses....excuses...look at me I'm special and don't have to comply with anything. Heard just about enough of the excuse makers.
To me, it comes down to whether she has dementia or not. If not, she's no Zsa Zsa and should have handed over her license.
If she has dimentia then she should not be driving !
Screw it, I'm going back into hiding before they come and get me
Who is "They?" Why would anyone come get you? So you were hiding before and why? Trying to make sense out of your comment.
you know if she would have given him her license , he might have given her a break and sent her on her way
Alan, she did not refuse, she said in a minute!!! I hope you never get old and slow like some of us!!! It's a good thing that she didn't break a hip, when he roughly pulled her from that SUV, or then there would be a lawsuit!!!
Yes, the officer could have waited a few more seconds before proceeding to the next step, but no, I do not believe this was required.
I've been stopped a half dozen times in my life for speeding infractions. It never once occurred to me to refuse to hand over my driver's license and my registration. This 77-year-old woman may be crying now, but she had the opportunity to avoid all of this unpleasantness: first by not speeding, and second by complying with the officers perfectly legal and reasonable requests.
The only complaint she and her family have is that the video of the arrest was made public. That strikes me as the single circumstance which needs explaining, and perhaps an apology.
Give him a gun and some 'power' and the IQ goes out the door. No sense what so ever. This 'cop' needs more than just anger management classes. He needs to not be serving the public.
How in the hell do you even know how old I am? Also how do you remove someone gently when they refuse to remove themselves. I will get old because everyone does and yes slow down. What does that have to do with people breaking the law and making excuses and failing to cooperate? You see the video, you read the story and you make excuses for people that are accountable for their OWN actions and NO one else. Next thing you know it will be an 18 year old and the excuse will be he's too young to know better. People are crass and think they only are above the Law. 77 or 55 who cares, your driving and the laws are the same for everyone, period.
First the grand daughter made the arest vidio public not the cop second the grand daughter said she said she would give he ID in a minute third she said go ahead and arrest me and when he told he to get out of the car she refused. I don't know how things work in her state but here in Minnesota if you get pulled over it's yes sir no sir and you do what your told
I am baffled. Her grandmother is embarrassed and cries that her life has been reduced to a video and online polls and her granddaughter is upset. I understand that. BUT -- the granddaughter is the one who RELEASED the video. The police department did not release the video to embarrass her. Baffling. And the family is refusing to meet with the officer. So, the woman refuses to do what we all have to do by presenting her ID to the officer after he asked repeatedly. He then tells her that if she doesn't present ID and registration, he will have to arrest her and she says, "Go ahead", he then instructs her 10 times to get out of the car and she refuses. Tell me again what all of you that believe he used excessive force are upset about??? At what age would it have been appropriate to have removed her from the car? What if she had been a 60 year old "grandmother"? 50? Even women in their 40's are grandmothers. At what age are people allowed to make their own rules with police officers? I am in my mid-40's and just wondering when I no longer am required to comply with law enforcement.
what dont you understand alan? did you even watch the video or read the story because it says in both that SHE NEVER REFUSED TO SHOW HER LICENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are you people that fraking blind to not read the damn story!!!! watch the video and you see clearly the cop was on the wrong side. its disgusting that some of you will defend that p.o.s. cop when he has a attitude and dragged an elderly woman out her car for a TRAFFIC VIOLATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a fking traffic violation.
there is no law that say when requested to show proof of ID that you shall furnish it in the time the officer wants but in a reasonable time, you just cant refuse.
Alan, How old are you stupid? Do you have a grandmother you want to see treated this way?
So what you are saying is this. Now because "you made it so" No one needs to show their license because it is a "traffic violation" and people can just refuse do provide anything? Or is it just 77 year old people that you select at random that "they" don't have to provide anything just because you made it so? Or your just allowed to go on your merry way because you have an excuse 1. I have to go to the bath room. 2. I'm too old to comply. 3. I will give you my license when I feel like it. 4. Then told would be arrested. Go ahead and arrest me. You have to be really kidding me. Best read the other posts because this is the feeling of most folks, ones that comply with the Law and then their are others that will make every excuse in the book for someone else that refused to be accountable for their own inane actions. Sorry but this woman just needed to take her damn license out like everyone that is responsible does every day of the year.
Arrogance and stupidity know no age limits, as I can clearly see from the video, the transcript, and some of the people commenting here. He was doing his job. She was clearly obstructing him from doing his job. She obviously has problems with authority, thinks she's above the law, and was consequently put in her place. I had an Uncle that was the same way all the way up until he died. He thought that since he was so old that rules no longer applied to him, and no one could do anything about it. This woman probably thought the same thing, and now her family is trying to make a big deal about it. I'll bet these same people dread seeing her come their homes with that kind of attitude, and I'll also bet they know full well her personality, but they see an opportunity to make a bit of cash here.
trouble46545, alan is absolutely correct, how old are you???? i am 62 and if i acted as this woman did, i would be embarrassed for my grandchildren. this woman looks and acts like a mean, bitchy, arrogant piece of trash.
What you don't understand, Swagganaut, is that she was asked to "give" her license to the officer, not "show" it to him.
This is standard practice in Massachusetts, where I live, and apparently in Texas too.
I know if my home state, if a police officer pulls you over for a driving infraction, you are required to comply with his lawful commands, which includes turning over your license and registration on demand, not when you feel like it. An officer conducting a traffic stop does not have time to play cat and mouse with a recalcitrant driver.
This 77-year-old woman created her own situation, not the officer, and you sir, are a fool, who apparently believes attaining a certain age exempts you from obeying the law.
@ trouble . My grandmother has been dead for 50 years you moron! Don't even bring my family members into your despicable post. Has nothing to do with someone else. Age does not matter when you break laws. Are you just lame or what?
Personally, trouble, I would hope my grandmother would not be so stupid or asinine as to intentionally obstruct an officer in lawful pursuit of his duty, and then cry about what happened afterwards.
Of course, had I such a stupid grandmother, I would have inherited 25% of her genes, thus rendering me so stupid as to share your attitudes.
19 sec.... Google "cop killed during traffic stop" and you get About 1,950,000 results, most of them killed in less than 19 sec......
@ trouble my mother is 88 and she would never act like this idiot lady. She would never refuse to comply with showing her license. She is a stickler on having ALL her paper work ready and everything up to date. She would not do 66 in a 50 or make any excuses as to why she can't show any documentation needed. You drive, your 17 or your 89 who cares read the damn laws and comply with the rules set forth FOR EVERYONE!
you didnt even understand what i said. I DO NOT HAVE TO IN ANY STATE SHOW ANY OFFICER MY ID IN THE TIME OF HIS CHOOSING!!!! I CAN TAKE MY SLOW AS TIME IN DOING IT AS LONG AS I COMPLY WITH THE REQUEST. there is no law that says otherwise and no law can be passed that says you do. im guessing you want someone with a disability to jump on command right? you want immediate results from your subjects right? no room for tolerance in your busy schedule huh? maybe the lady was pissing herself and wanted to wait a few secs before moving around, im sure that cop was oh so busy writing more TRAFFIC TICKETS! must be a grueling job catching all those dangerous cars while the real criminals run around.
do you not understand that we are paying the police salary and as such we are their employer and due the respect of that position unless we take action otherwise. the police do not own us and they are not our parents nor are they allowed to lord over us, all the cop had to do was listen to her story and thats it.
cops need to learn respect and who pays their bills.
Hummmmmmmmmmmmm .. Nineteen seconds ? ..... 19 seconds to make a rational decision to assault a elderly woman? is that how long it takes you to decide to beat your kids or your wife?
Dragging someone from a automobile is a bit extreme, anywhere, but Texas is a unusual state in regards to justice ... and perhaps this is S.O.P there, just the norm in Keene, Texas
For all the Sheeple that support this action ... call your local police and tell them this is the way to do it ... beat the citizens into submission, support violence by police on the citizens for any minor infraction, support the efforts to create a "Police State!"
By any reasonable standard, this is clearly "Excessive Force" ... Sorta like beating a five year old for refusing to eat their peas ....
"Only in America Land of the
FreeSheeple!"BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
The family wants an apology?!! Okay: we're sorry your family member is an idiot.
@Rick-854092, she did not say she needed a minute, or "just a minute". I am sure the cop would have given her plenty time if she were trying to get it, and just having trouble.
She said, "in a minute", and was clearly being combative when she said it. She was going to give it when she felt like it. She challenged his legal authority with her arrogance, and she lost.
So what then was her excuse for not getting out of the car?
I would also point out that the woman looks to be in pretty good health for 77, and the cop had no idea how old she was at that time...why? Oh, because she refused to show her license.
Ok, so just because the woman is 77 she feels that she doesn't have to abide by the law? I don't get it, she spent more time arguing- doesn't seem like the bladder infection was all that bad... would have taken less time to give the officer what he asked for. And they say that the younger generations don't have it right, nice example!!
Swagganaut - Your post of "I DO NOT HAVE TO IN ANY STATE SHOW ANY OFFICER MY ID IN THE TIME OF HIS CHOOSING!!!! I CAN TAKE MY SLOW AS TIME IN DOING IT AS LONG AS I COMPLY WITH THE REQUEST. there is no law that says otherwise and no law can be passed that says you do." shows much contempt. Someone who just irritates others for no other reason then just because they can. You want to be special because you know your rights, right down to the small print. You like confrontation because? You will just take your sweet time to take out your ID because "you are paying his salary" so it means now your his boss and how dare he. Traffic violations ....pooo you say. how many people die because of drunks, speeders and such. Nuf said.
The people who are saying that she didn't refuse, but instead said give me a minute need to finish her quote. Because basically she said i will give you my license AFTER I tell you about my medical condition, in the hopes that the officer wouldn't give her a speeding ticket because she has bladder problems and needed to speed to get to the restroom. So if I tell a police officer that i will give him something ONLY after I get to do something, then I am essentially refusing to give him my license.
It didn't matter if it was 19 seconds or 5 seconds... once she did not comply, then says "go ahead", when he informed her that she would be arrested, she lost any compassion from me.
She was obviously making excuses:
1) Why say "in a minute"? Did she expect to step out of the car and urinate on the ground? I don't think so.
2) If she did have to go so bad that she could not even hand him her drivers license, as required by law - did she relieve herself in the back seat of the patrol car?
77 years old, she SHOULD have known better. When a police officer pulls you over for speeding, which she was doing and pretty much admitted to it when she started giving him the 'bladder infection' excuse, you don't say "in a minute", you give it to him. "Yes sir/No sir" let him do his job and if you have a problem with it, wait for your court date. I knew that when I was 15.
im sure she was a danger to society right? she musta killed someone or robbed someone right? i mean to be forcibly pulled from your vehicle and dropped on the ground for a traffic violation must be standard practice for a old lady with an attitude right? i would of though this professional peace officer was trained correctly on how to diffuse situations without using force.
i wonder how they treat the real criminals, or have they caught any yet? still making that ticket quota eh?
Where I come from, when the officer says license and registration, you give it to him, IMMEDIATELY, or at least make an attempt to. Who the h--- does she think she is than she can take her time and explain something to him. I don't care how old she is, she was belligerent and disrespectful. And I really don't believe that she has a bladder infection either, she was just trying to justify her speeding. And to moonbeamracer, if someone is told they are going to jail and they refuse to cooperate, that's what happens. And while I agree that there are crooked cops out there, whole her attitude is just a microcosm of a lot of society's problem. People lack respect for authority and each other. And Swagganaut, I pay help pay for the police salaries, and I am happy with the way he handled that situation. The lack of respect was by her, not by him.
I did watch the video. 1. She was belligerent. 2. she acted like she was hiding something, either no proof of insurance or registration or worse, drugs. 3. while officer was respectful she was not. If she did indeed have bladder infection she should have seen a Dr., worn a pad or a depends which would eliminate the rush to a potty or just not drive. No brainer, been there done that with menopause. Apology is warranted but not by officer, but by perp. By the showing of video by family member, to get sympathy, it is no different than blackmailing the legal system to get out of fine and costs.
In Texas law enforcement have a tougher job staying alive, Officer did the right thing, period.
From the article:
and that is my problem how? the only laws i agree with are ones that deal with harm, intent and attempt. all others are only a means of control. it wouldn't matter what law you create, people will break it, education is always the key but education is poor for controlling people. i give assumed respect unless proven otherwise, if the first thing from a cops mouth is a snide remark, he gets an attitude from me.
i would agree this lady had an attitude and she herself could have prevented this but at the same time a police officer is suppose to be trained by our tax money to handle situations like this with the least amount of force necessary, he failed, they both failed but an officer is always held to a higher standard than a citizen and are paid to do a service, not treat us like common serfs who must bow to their will.
i find it quite refreshing that all this family wants is an apology, there was no reason to use force for a traffic violator, they are not safety laws that have anything to do with general public safety, only revenue and control.
Swaganut, does that work both ways? She gets to take her sweet time in presenting the license to the officer so under your logic the officer can take his sweet time writing the citation and releasing her, is that correct? How about she acts her age and hands over her license. Just maybe he would have given her a quick warning and released her or held onto her license and told her to proceed to her residence to relieve herself and he would follow her and then issue a citation. We'll never know because she chose to act like a 7 year old and not a 77 year old mature driver.
All she had to do was cooperate and not give attitude and lip. Respect is a two way street, people. The Officer warned her, she chose to challenge him. Since she is physically and mentally able to drive a car, she is physically and mentally able to follow the law. She should have just given him the license and poof of insurance and she'd have been on her way. Any delay in getting to the bathroom, she caused herself. Just because she is in her 70's, as am I, you still have to follow the law. Had she not been speeding she would not have been pulled over in the first place.
This reminds me of an occassion I had with an officer, who pulled me over for speeding. I had my license and registration out and handed it to him when he got to my window. He at that point gave me the opportunity to tell why I was speeding. I told him and asked if he would allow me to continue a half mile so that I could meet a deadline and I would gladly accept the ticket. He let me go with a warning. I was very appreciative of his kindness. But guess what, I was not in control nor was I arrogant enough to think that this person was my employee. He was performing his duty. I was wrong. I knew and know that if you are pulled over by a police officer, he/she will want to see your drivers license, registration and insurance card when he gets to my window...... I will have it out waiting for him/her.
If I really need to go to the bathroom, even more reason to have the necessary paperwork ready so I don't waste time. This woman and her family are completely wrong and need to issue the police department an apology.....
Oh and finishing my experience, I called the police department the next day to thank the officer for his kindness and was told I must be the luckiest person on the planet. This officer was so used to being lied to (having had several individuals who he pulled over in separate occassions using the same lame excuse for speeding) that he never let someone go from a speeding ticket. Honesty and respect for someone else is much more important than how we are treated. Generally how we treat others, will come back to us.
This girl releases the "embarrassing" video, she said something along the lines of, people think that she is a criminal but she is not a criminal.
Ummm, sorry sweetie, when you DISOBEY a LAW-FULL ORDER, than CHALLENGE THE OFFICER (the old woman said "Well, go ahead" when the officer told her that if she didn't comply, she would be arrested) than that makes you by default, a criminal. Officers (at least around here) don't go around arresting peaceful, law-abiding citizens.
Face it you idiot, your grandmother escalated the situation NOT THE OFFICER. If the old woman would have said "Let me get that for you" than started to get the info out, the officer would have stood there for a minute while she got it. But that isn't what she did, she tried to order the officer to wait, (I'll give it to you when I'm good and ready type of attitude). That doesn't work in ANY city that I have ever been to. ALL officers expect compliance with a direct order.
The officer actually helped her up. If I had done that during a stop, I would have been beaten and tased!
Yes, I have watched the entire video, she was belligerent and non-compliant. The poll I just looked at shows that 76% of the people responding agree with me. (Poll -
Q: Did officer who arrested 77-year-old go too far?13172 votes
24% Yes 3217 votes
76% No 9955 votes
If you want respect, you first have to give it. The officer asked for her license and she said wait a minute. He then said "give it to me now or go to jail". She replied with "Go ahead".
Sorry, but she instigated the situation and she is a bytch imo. I worked with old people, and I know they can be complete azzholes to deal with, and judging by her manners, she's a real bytch. Toss her azz in jail, then send her to a state facility so they can dope her up to shut her up. I have no sympathy for old people that think that just because they are seniors, they should be treated with special rights.
Stop blaming the officer and living in denial when the old bat was 100% in the wrong. It's the old bat that needs to go to angry class management and apologize to the officer for being a complete azzhole.
Kudos to the cop for following procedures and enforcing the laws.
"Would you want your grandmother treated this way."...
Stupid question because my grandmother would have provided the information at the first request rather than being an arrogant, self-centered individual.
For her embarrassment, GOOD!!! She deserves to be embarrassed. She created that situation. She REFUSED to provide the information to the cop by NOT GIVING IT to him. It doesn't really matter what words she used. Maybe next time she'll drop her ego a bit and give the cop what he asks for.
This woman is not exempt from the law, regardless of age. Special consideration was probably given to her until she refused to corporate in any way. The last thing you want to tell a cop when he tells you do what I say or I will take you to jail is " "Well, go ahead."
@Swagganaut...I'm sure nothing is your problem reading your post. Not mine either since she is the one arrested and not me. I can tell you this if I had acted that way it would be the same result if i was 19, 55 or 77 years old. I might agree with you if this woman had a handicap sticker and a walker in the back, then the cop probably would be more lenient. Otherwise it's the same for EVERYONE, no excuses because of age, stupidity or I have to go to the bathroom BS. As far as legal course I don't think she has a leg to stand on and will not find more then 20% of the jury to side with her. She brought the thing on herself. In hindsight maybe the police should just drop the charges sort of quid pro quo and be done with the matter. I just thank god that my 88 year old mother would never act like this idiot woman did. Some people just can not follow rules or refuse to. It's simple actually, doesn't hurt a bit.
Seems to me if she had a bladder infection she would want to produce the documents as quickly as possible so she could get to a bathroom, which leads me to believe she was just being oppositional, for whatever reason.
I just re-watched the video again, she DID refuse to give up the ID, SIX TIMES. When he became more demanding she FLAT OUT REFUSED by stating, "Well, I'll give it to ya in a minute, but..." In other words, no I will not give it to you right now, I will give it to you when I am good and ready. She wanted to tell her story about why she was speeding and she got mad because the officer didn't want to hear her excuse at that moment. He told her "give me your licence, then I will listen to you". She didn't want to do that, she wanted to do it her way. If she was in such a hurry to get it over with, she should have got the id out and handed it to him, NOT stated "Will you listen to me" and then started a losing (you will always lose against a cop) argument.
He told her to step out of the vehicle and she said "I will not." Um, sorry, but NO, you do NOT have the right to tell an officer that he can't arrest you, period. This woman brought this on herself, he was NOT some "angry gun-toting maniac with a God complex" as some of you have tried to make him out to be.
If my 80 year old mother got treated that way, someone would have a bad day, and it wouldn't be Mom. When elderly people gotta go, they gotta go, and she told him that. It would have been easy enough for the officer to just follow her to a restroom, let her take care of her business, then take care of his. Don't they teach people in Keene, Texas to respect their elders? Or maybe, they just hire Barney Fife. It's not like the old lady was a flight risk, or a desperate criminal, she was just a cranky old lady, that needed to go to the restroom, which is enough to make you cranky at times. If I was her kids, I'd have to discuss with the Mayor, his re-election prospects, if the officer remained employed in the City of Keene, Texas, or if he didn't get a bad mark on his employment record.
Where was her sense when it was clear that she was in the wrong. She even asked the officer to hurry up. How is he supposed to hurry when he doesn't have the document he needs to complete the stop? Now you want to kick this guy off the force because granny thought she was special and the rules don't apply to her? Maybe you should decide who the cops are so you can tell them which laws they should enforce and which ones they should ignore.
officers are paid with tax payer money to do a job, they do not have the power to just idle by but they do anyways. she is a citizen and presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of her peers, she is due respect and afforded grace unless proven otherwise. there is no court room in her car and she had every right to question the cop, she did not refuse to give her ID, though she did bait the cop for a loss.
the first priority to a cop is to protect the citizen, not himself nor fellow officers. he must be diligent at all times to the creatures of crime but be professional to the citizen for he is respected as he respects the uniform and what it stands for.
why do you want to give so much power to people with very little oversight? cops are not our gods, they are not above us nor below us, they enforce our laws and seek justice for the common good.
all i see it people calling this lady names when all she did was speed, i can see why she has an attitude, probably dealing with these type of people all her life.
She refused, there is video. I guess she thought since she is old she doesn't have to comply with the law. I guess you're never too old to act like a "B" if that's who you are. I'm with the officer on this one.
"The family said Bedford is embarrassed..."
I would be too, if I insisted on breaking the law, making a fool of myself, then seeing family publish the video.
I don't usually side with the Cops in these stories. She was belligerant and should have been tasered and dragged to the patrol car by her hair. I hope she gets at least 30 days in jail to think about her actions and that she is not that special.
So your mom knows that she has an issue, and instead of dealing with it by, I don't know, say pulling over at any number of places to take care of it. You're ok, with your mom putting other lives and her own at risk by speeding, and then when she gets caught and rightfully arrested, your going after the cops? Wow, talk about a case of treat me special and the rules apply to everyone but me huh?
To all of you defending the conduct of the woman, you need to remember a few of the FACTS, not opinion. She was caught SPEEDING at 66 mph in 50 mph zone. She REFUSED to hand over her documents despite being told to do so FOUR times. She told the officer that she would give him her information AFTER he listened to her EXCUSE. Stop right there!
A officer has stopped a speeding vehicle, the driver of which refuses to identify themselves or provide required documents. Any officer in that situation is immediately on edge. Why is this person speeding? Are they running from something? Why are they refusing to provide their ID? In a routine traffic stop, seconds count. Too many unsuspecting officers have been shot and killed during a "routine traffic stop". There is also the real danger of the officer getting hit by a distracted passing motorist. Look up videos on the inter-net of officers getting hit while standing outside of a stopped vehicle.
Considering all of that, "granny" was warned that refusing to provide her ID will result in her arrest. Her response: GO AHEAD. The officer then tells her to step out of her vehicle and she REFUSES to do that either! Someone tell me where this officer was wrong. Perhaps if this woman wasn't SPEEDING, she wouldn't have been exposed for the JERK that she is...
If you want respect, then you got to give it as well. The granddaughter is in denial and a freaking loon imo. She needs someone to hold her hand and explain to her what's happening on the video.
Old people can be just as mean and nasty as a younger person. All the woman had to do was "STFU" and do what the officer asked for her to do. Problem solved!
Now the whole idiotic family have made themselves a bunch of fools worldwide on the WWW.
@Andy-Tough-Guy, oops, I mean Andy Blackwood, you ask if they teach people to respect their elders? Well, maybe the woman, you, and your mother should respect the law, then there won't be any problems.
Granny should have known better than to give the officer a difficult time. She should apologize to the cop for being a b!tch.
Swagganaut- your statement of All She Did Was Speed. If that was the case this would not be on the news, period. People get tickets every minute of the damn day. They don't refuse to comply with a Lawful order. Can I have your Drivers License and Insurance? She got arrested purely because of her actions alone. Also your statement of "i can see why she has an attitude, probably dealing with these type of people all her life." really makes you lose ALL creditability in anything you say. That statement was pure conjecture at best and inane at the same time. If I was the "soup n-a-z-i" I'd have to say "No soup for you today" "Come back next year!"
If you were a reporter what question in this story would you most want to ask the woman, or her apparently dense granddaughter? Why didn't she simply give the cop her license immediately when asked? She clearly has an attitude and wants to make the officer comply with her demands, rather than simply comply with his demands of her.
And what question isn't even posed in the above article? Why didn't she simply give her license immediately when asked?
Until that question is answered then every defender of this woman is simply revealing a bias against the police, or in favor of citizens who refuse to cooperate despite the law requiring them to do so. It is only after the incident that this woman is embarrassed. But not by HER behavior. Not by her speeding, or (probably) lying about a bladder infection, or her refusal to to comply with lawful orders by the officer. No, her embarrassment has resulted from the publicity of the event. The publicity her MENSA candidate of a granddaughter sought by releasing the video publicly! You just can't make this crap up.
Swagganaut: I hate to call people names, but you are clearly an idiot and I suggest you seek counseling and some heavy medication.
Plenty of others here tried to enlighten you, but you refuse to see the obvious.
It must suck to be you.
He was protecting citizens. The other citizens on the road who were put in danger by a selfish woman who could only think of herself. And where was her respect for the officer?
If you think cops have no oversight you should really pull your head out. Not only do they have cameras in the car, for cases just like this, every citizen with a cell phone has a camera, there are cameras all over the place that you probably never notice until it is used in a court case, usually against cops. There are internal affairs divisions, citizen protection groups, civil law firms that do nothing but make piles of money extorting law enforcement when they see the slightest issue. Other then maybe a politician, a cop is the most scrutinized and looked at profession we have.
Ever stop to think that maybe the reason she has been dealing with people like this her whole life is because of her attitude?
Regardless of the law when cops have to deal with older folks and kids below the age of 11 they need to be more reasonable how force is applied. To start with, you do not want to shatter older folks hip and put them in to further pain and put tax payers in to unnecessary cost. She did not rob bank. It is a traffic violation. Call a female cop to assist and sit in the car and wait and text. The old lady either will comply on her own or she will respond to a female cop a lot better. Same with young kids. If you can not catch them at some moment, take a good photo shot or some hard evidence to identify them. Trace them down to their hole (house). But do not scare them to the extent they fall in a ditch or old well as they run away and kill themselves.
US should be gentile with the two extremes. The old and the young.
i see the bigger problem is that you thinks cops are in danger all the time, THEY ARE NOT!! being a police officer is no where near the top dangerous jobs, being a mechanic is more dangerous. cops should be trained to spot things that pose safety hazards, not see all citizens as potential threats. this cops might have been following protocol but that just means protocol is wrong. the one thing is do not like is the bad training they go though and the brotherhood mentality thay have, their job is not to protect their buddies.
No apology should be issued. It is clear from her tone that she had no intention of cooperating with the officer. Cops are trained to enforce the law. She violated it, and then repeatedly refused to supply the properly requested I.D.
The 'protocol' wasn't wrong. The woman was wrong. I don't care if you're 7, 17, 27 or 77. . .you break the speed limit by 16 mph, then refuse to cooperate with the officer who pulls you over, you're going to get the jewelry put on your wrists, and get a chauffeured ride to the station. . .and rightly so.
People are you forgetting about uromisitisis. What if she got uromisitisis poisoning and died? Would you be happy then?
After reading the comments on this thread I asked myself, what're the worst dictatorships in the world right now? I'm sure most people would agree North Korea and Zimbabwe. I then wondered if the situation that happened in Keene, TX can happen in either one of these dictatorships?
I just can't see how it could happen in any one of those countries. It serves no purpose whatsoever in maintaining law and order, and it shows an irrational disrespect for the elderly and a disregard for any physical or psychological condition they might have.
There's something really wrong with the American psych to 1) Have police officers beating up elderly people just about every week, and 2) The rabid support they get from many Americans.
In other words, the anger I see in the US on the part of the authorities and their supporters is different from the anger people living in a dictatorship have in regard to a political dissident or government restrictions.
The anger I see in the US is more of a spoiled brat, selfish type of anger. I've no other way to explain this amount of anger in one of the freest, most advanced, most beautiful countries in the world.
How did it happen that so many Americans have forgotten where they live and how good they have it in life? How have they lost perspective in the practical application of the law and have become obsessed with technicalities that have nothing to do with keeping society secure?
How is it possible that any hesitation or irritation on the part of a citizen is enough reason for a police officer to physically incapacitate and arrest the citizen?
What, exactly, has happened to the good ol' USA?
Swagganaut, I don't ever side with the police automatically. I am siding with this officer this time because he didn't do anything wrong. The lady (if you can call her a lady) is in the wrong here.
I literally see 98% of people here agreeing with the police officer.
Are you saying YOU are right? and 98% of the people here AND the established police protocol are wrong?
You are right because they don't have cars. Driving is a privilege and certain rules have to be followed. Why bull@!$%# the cop over a 66 in a 50. She didn't seem to pee her pants so bladder control doesn't seem to be an issue. If I was that cop I would want my 19 seconds back
She knew she was being pulled over she should have had her license ready to hand to the officer. When a cop pulls you over you don't tell him just a minute and expect him to listen to you about your bladder infection. You hand him your freakin' license, registration and proof of insurance and then may apologize for speeding and then explain your situation. You don't talk to him like you would one of your children or grandchildren when you don't agree with them. He doesn't have to listen to her she is not his mother or his teacher and he is not a child. She owes the officer an apology for not complying with his simple request.
It would be like a bank robber telling the police just a minute I will drop to the ground after you listen to what I say. I'm going to tell you why I robbed the bank, you need to listen to me before I comply with your SIMPLE request. My children are hungry!
Stupid stupid stupid old lady and shame on her family for thinking she was in the right.
MQ1968
That's what he is saying. You need to grasp his other postings to see what he is about. He wants to be free to do what ever he wishes and damned be the Law or anything else. His "I don't Have to" attitude speaks for itself. He is in his Own Utopia World that he has created for himself. Not accountable because those are NOT his Laws. Makes excuses for other that he would himself if in that situation. Does not care if 99.9% think differently because he's always right.
Most of you have not seen the video. The woman immediately informed the officer that she had a bladder infection and had to use the restroom, which happened to be true. She was very polite and asked him for time to do that. At no time did she refuse to show her license. This guy was an ass from second one, and if anyone of you think that just because you may (or may not) have bent over for the cop and he wouldn't do the same to you, you are mistaken.
This guy was looking for physical action, as almost all cops do and they don't give a f*ck about any of you. My brother is a Dallas police officer who, along with his buddies brag about some of the disgusting and brutal things they have done to people, and they don't give a d*mn about innocence.
Keep thinking that something like this won't happen to you. Plenty of idiots who kissed the azzes of cops have still gotten f*cked up anyway. You are not special.
Her granddaughter, Aubrey McQue, sought the video from Keene police and made it public.
Lynn Bedford is the first person responsible for the incident (speeding, stalling instead of handing over her license, and challenging the officer to arrest her [saying "go ahead" is a challenge, people], and finally by refusing to exit the vehicle.
Aubrey McQue is the first person responsible for garnering her grandmother all of the unwanted attention. Kids think that posting everything in the public forum is great, but so much of it is reckless and even stupid, e.g. sexting, posting video of your vandalism escapades, posting your assault or robbery of people, etc.
Congratulations Aubrey McQue on assisting your grandmother in bringing her so much grief.
Swagganaut - wow, you have come up with some really far out reasons why this woman should have been allowed to break the laws and why cops are just normal citizens who should not have any power to do anything, but you really take the cake with your response about it not being your problem that people are killed every day by drunks, speeders, etc. You said something to the effect of only being concerned with laws about harm. Not really sure what you were trying to say, but it sounded to me that you thought laws against speeding and driving drunk don't have to do with "harm". I hate to break it to you, but as the original commenter mentioned, speeders and drunks DO cause "harm" to innocent people EVERY DAY! That is why this woman was pulled over. Due to her high speed, she could have caused an accident resulting in "harm" or death of an innocent person. Her delay in handing over her license could have resulted in "harm" or death to the officer, if a distracted driver hit him. Happens all the time. Why should this man have to put his life on the line so this arrogant woman can try to avoid her legal duty of producing proof that she was legally able to drive?? Law enforcement officers DO put their lives on the line every day. If you don't understand that, maybe you should do a little bit of research before you get on a message board spouting your ignorance. Elderly drivers are some of the most dangerous people on the road.
As many others have mentioned, if she would have handed over her license immediately, then explained nicely that she really had to "go", he might have let her go with a warning. Or if she had made an effort to get the license, but due to her age, was moving slowly at getting to it, then he would have continued to be patient (as I feel he was very patient as she tried to delay). She was trying to get him to listen to her excuse and wanted her way. She should understand the laws, and if not, she shouldn't be driving any more.
stull,
If she said in two hours she still would not have been refusing, right? Ever heard of stall tactics? Just wondering.
If it takes you 1 minute to decide whether or not you should provide your license to a cop who pooled you over for speeding, you should probably not be driving. That's a seriously long reaction time! And since when is having a medical condition an excuse for speeding? If she really needed "to go", she should have done it before leaving the church. And now the family just want to make a profit on the back of the taxpayer. Shameful!
WOW. That is so funny! If anybody agrees with the officer than the people on the old woman's defense go straight for the "OH, So you think it is OK for POLICE to BEAT the ELDERLY?" LOL, NOBODY here has stated anything anywhere close to that. I have not seen ONE POST where anyone has agreed with "beating the elderly" because they may be a little slower at tasks. There is no "rabid support for beating up the elderly just about every week". Oh, and this woman did NOT get any kind of BEATING.
This is about this woman's disrespect for anybody but herself. She didn't get drug out of her car for speeding. She got drug out of her car for refusing to comply with a direct order, AFTER the officer TOLD her that he was going to arrest if she didn't do what he asked. The woman's idiotic response to being told that she was going to get arrested for non-compliance was "GO AHEAD".
The cop asked for her license. According to the video there was 19seconds between that and when he pulled her out of the car. If it takes her THAT long to reach into her purse for her license then maybe she shouldn't be driving.
She claimed to have a bladder condition. Did she have an accident either during the incident or on her way to jail? NO? Then I guess she doesn't have as good of a reason as she thought to be driving 20mph over the speed limit.
He asked for her license. She "Supposedly" has a medical problem. She could have been explaining this to him while she reached for her license. She instead decided to give him grief.
She complains of embarrassment for the video going viral and demands an apology. It's her granddaughter who put the video on the web, not the cops. If she wants an apology, it should come from her granddaughter.
I'm all for respect for our elders, but she cross the line on this one.
So the family hired an attorney and refused to discuss the situation with the PD. I can't help but wonder how many millions of dollars they want from the city and state to make them feel better? Evidently the family is viewing this woman's arrogance and stupidity as their cash cow.
myspellcheckerisbroken -
#1. Non-Compliance IS refusal. An officer tells you to stop, you stop, if you don't than you get charged. Period. And NO, you don't get to tell the officer wait until after my potty break to write me up.
#2. Had to use the restroom, which is true. How? Do you personally know this woman and were present after the stop? If not, then you are just guessing.
#3. This guy was NOT an ass from second one. In the beginning, he introduced himself, informed her of why he was stopping her, etc. SHE was the one that was an ASS from GO because she was mad at being pulled over.
#4. What's your personal info so we can track down this "disgusting and brutal" cop that you are related to so we can stop his illegal behavior?
"the first priority to a cop is to protect the citizen, not himself nor fellow officers"
BWAAAHAHAHA! Swagga has been watching too many Die Hard videos. That's not life in the real world, Einstein. There is also no legal obligation for the police to protect a citizen--don't believe me, just Google it. So in your wonderful 20/20 hindsight vision, you (think you) know that the woman was just an innocent ole lady, but from the police perspective, you don't assume that or you risk getting hurt. I know you're smarter than everyone else, but I have to disagree that cops are not ALWAYS in the line of danger. They can be a target at the drop of a hat, and since they aren't all-knowing like you are, they have to assume at ALL times that they are in danger. It's the line of work and accepted risk, but it DOES NOT mean that they are or should be willing to be killed. I don't disagree that quite often they come across harshly and rudely, but so do some of the people they deal with, such as the spoiled old princess in this video. And if you think older people can't be a threat... then just go back to your fantasy t.v. world, I won't bother to enlighten you. At least the vast majority of cops are working for the benefit of society, which is more than can be said for people like you, the all-knowing ne'erdowells that sit on their rotund rumps watching t.v. and think they know a cop's job because it's how Bruce Willis did it.
CC GWRIDER....That my friend is absolutely the POST of the DAY! I thought I caught this person in his own Utopian World, but you done slammed that door shut with Bruce Willis, Die Hard and my favorite bad guy of the 1980's-1990's Alan Rickman! You go!
Watch the entire video of the police stop before you side with this woman. It was one minute - not 19 seconds as one poster says. She was repeatedly asked to present her license and registration and she repeatedly refused. She was warned she would be arrested, she said fine do it. When the officer told her to get out of the vehicle, she refused - repeatedly. When the officer had to forcibly try to remove her she fought with him refusing to remove her feet from the car, which is why she ended on the ground. This woman is definitely old enough to know that when you are pulled over you are required to present the requested id. She is old enough to know that when you don't comply you can be arrested. If she suffered from dementia she should not be behind the wheel. As she was responding to him, she was cognizant. The law doesn't say that it applies to everyone but senior ladies...the officer was doing his job. Leave it be.
@ Susan H.
Yet you weren't there either, but defend the guy because he is a cop and no other reason. Not only that, you inserted your own opinion, such as "she was made for being pulled over." She never stated or indicated that, but it didn't stop you from insinuating it, did it?
Unless citizens are being physical with the cop, there is no reason for being physical with the citizen. Police abuse is being recorded every single day in this country, and much of it reported right here on this website. How many times have you made a comment defending the innocence or rights of the victim abused by a cop? I am going to venture a guess and say zero. If I am wrong, please show me the comment you made dfending the person, and I will apologize. But, just like the cops, you don't give a d*mn. You are most likely one of the guilty until proven innocent crowd too.
Btw, there is now law or regulation that says you can be dragged out of your vehicle or physically assaulted because you didn't provide your license fast enough. Wtf is wrong with some of you. You think your siding with the cops no matter what will prevent you from being brutalized by the police some day? It won't. Most of us try to be professional in our jobs everyday, but if you're a cop, it's not necessary and there will be plenty weak minded individuals to support you.
One more thing Susan. I live here in the area and the local news did a very good investigation on this incident. So yes, we do know that she has a bladder infection because the family produced the medical records for the reporter doing the story.
Although very emabrrassing, I was stopped by a Brownsville PO a few years ago and I told him I was very sick and trying to get to the restroom at the gas station across the street. He politely escorted me there and when he realized I was not faking it, he let me go, which I did not expect him to do. He went above and beyond what was necessary. The cop in this incident with the old woman didn't give a sh*t if she was sick or not. Which is clearly obvious by now.
myspellcheckerisbroken -
1. Wrong, I didn't defend him "just because he was a cop" and I did have good reason to defend him, I watched the video, she was indignant, and yes, MAD that she was pulled over. She didn't have to state it, her tone and actions PROVED it, so I didn't insinuate anything.
2. Wrong again. By your logic, if I PEACEFULLY refuse a direct order, the officer has no right to go"hands on"? Of course he does. This woman escalated the situation until he had to. She refused to give id, refused even after being told that she was going to be arrested, resisted arrest and then refused to get out of the car (resulting in her fall).
3. I HAVE defended innocent people, that is my point, this woman is NOT innocent. I do care about officers that abuse their power being brought to justice. I have never stated "guilty until proven innocent". However in this case, there is VIDEO to back up EVERYTHING that I have stated on here.
Hey, she didn't have the taser used on her!
"I know from experience from senior citizens and elderly people that they don't have to move faster," she said. "They take a more leisurely pace to do things, and that's the respect afforded them because they've lived so long."
She obviously was moving pretty fast to get pulled over...
I can just hear the twilight zone theme now...do do do do do dodo, can't you. Our narrator "Rod Serling" The Case of Mr Sagganaut- A man so enthralled with his Own Utopian thoughts is about to enter The Twilight Zone. He enters a World of NO Laws in which others have their own separate Laws. Little does he know he is about to become a wreck of a human when he finds a lawless society he has entered. Mr Sagganaut is NOW in The Twilight zone of his own making..........do do do do dododo.
@Susan,
I don't know where you live, but you are wrong again, and your posts are full of contradictions. Unknown to many people, in Texas, you cannot be arrested for speeding, unless you are going 25 mph or more over the speed limit. Also, in TX she is allowed to ask questions before handing over her license, specifically about why she was being stopped, or even to give info about her physical condition which she may think is pertinent to the situation. So no, the cop does not have the right to go "hands on" when she took her time about it.
Finally, even if he had the right to beat her down, taze, or shoot her, why do so many have a problem with cops doing their jobs professionally and courteously. None of the physical stuff was necessary, but he wanted to do it. He was mad because he thinks that she, you, and everyone else need to bow down to him. Wrong, and anyone who gives others power over them are weak sheep.
I have been stopped by police and have been nothing but courteous and respectful, but I will treat the cops the way they treat me or my family, so they would be wise to do the same.
You just don't like the old bag, neither do I, but she doesn't deserve that treatment because officer a-hole doesn't like her either.
She's not going to get any sympathy. And really the only person who needs to be giving the apology is the 77 year old woman. The "in a minute" statement isn't that she's going to show the id in a minute its the "I'm not going to do what you ask" statement. That officer deserves an apology from the woman, for making his job more difficult.
The officer turns on his lights to pull you over. You pull over, come to a complete stop. At this point I personally am already reaching for my license and insurance, the officer is on the radio calling in your license plate to make sure there is not something wrong, stolen, or that the vehicle you are in has not been involved in a recent crime. This process takes about 15 seconds to a few minutes depending on the radio traffic.
Now the officer doesnt bounce out of his car, and jump up to your window, they make sure you, and they are safe from oncoming traffic (add another 15-30 seconds) before they approach your vehicle. Now that you have had almost 2 minutes or so to find your paperwork and get your license out, The officer is going to explain why they pulled you over while asking for your drivers license and insurance.
You can A. Flip them the bird, B. Explain that you had to use the restroom C. Tell them about the crack pipe in your glove box or D. Hand them your license and proof of insurance.
Chances are at 77, if you choose D and (previously prepared your information) your going to get a warning, told to slow down, and have a nice day. The other three options of course are going to prolong, or even possibly get you yanked out of the car for acting pompous, suspicious, or disrespectful.
The CHP in Northern California just laid one of their officers to rest this week. A routine traffic stop. The officer was shot and killed within moments of pulling over the vehicle. Traffic stops are anything but routine for those officers. Maybe more patience was needed this time, but the officer never knows whats going to happen next.
You can watch all the viral videos about the "bad cops" and hope you see the complete picture of what happened before the cameras turned on. Yes there are going to be bad apples, but most of them are worthy of the uniform.
To all above who have read my posts, please see below post 2.10. The logic of Gtouch, post 2.8, has prevailed. You may carry on Susan.
Ah, America in 2012..... Where the lawbreakers demand apologies from those who have the b_lls to arrest them....
I live near Keene also and they are notorious as one of the top "speed traps" around, no doubt she was speeding. Older folks are little slower and little more hard headed and I am sure this cop was over run with ego as most of these small town cops are rejects from the big cities making peanuts but they do get to carry a gun. Lot of these yahoos stop people outside the city limits just because they can, in my small town, it common to get stopped for 2mph over...nice huh?
myspellcherisbroken -
1. I don't know where you live, but you are wrong again, and your posts are full of contradictions. - Um, no they are not, you are wrong, go back and reread my posts. They all say the exact same thing. The woman did what she did. And what she did was WRONG.
2. Unknown to many people, in Texas, you cannot be arrested for speeding, unless you are going 25 mph or more over the speed limit.- That may be true, but, she refused a direct order and was told that if she didn't comply she was going to be placed under arrest. Instead of saying ok, let me get my id, she said, "Go Ahead". And so he did. That is a direct challenge period. She DID NOT get arrested for speeding.
3. Also, in TX she is allowed to ask questions before handing over her license, specifically about why she was being stopped, - The officer did tell her who he was, HE DID tell her specifically why she was being stopped.
4. or even to give info about her physical condition which she may think is pertinent to the situation. -The officer DID tell her that he would hear her side of the story, after she gave him her DL. She refused.
5. So no, the cop does not have the right to go "hands on" when she took her time about it. - Yes he did. He did not go hands on until after he told her that she was being placed under arrest. And NO, he did not arrest her because she "took to long".
lol, myspellcherckerisbroken, - nicely put, both of you. Gtouch has maybe put it better than I did. I apologize if I came across as confrontational, that was not my intent.
Just one more thing than I'm out, I've pretty much stated everything that I wanted to.
Finally, even if he had the right to beat her down, taze, or shoot her, why do so many have a problem with cops doing their jobs professionally and courteously. - I do agree with you on this one, officers should be professional and courteous because they are held to a higher standard due to their positions in the community. You and justredd64 may also have a very valid point about me not living there so I do not know this particular officer. I guess I should try harder to see both sides. I am not saying what this woman did was unforgivable. I just think that in this particular case, it got blown way out of porportion (by the granddaughter none the less, if she hadn't posted the video, this would have been just another stop), and I don't think that they should go after the officer and the city for any wrongdoing. Even if the officer technically didn't do anything wrong, maybe this has taught him to be a little more compassionate in the future.
lol, your spellchecker is broken but I misspell more words?
We're all good Susan. Even though I am and admit that I'm wrong on this one, I hate to admit it. But Gtouch has a way of putting things in perpspective and usually it's a d*mn funny perpspective. I don't know how often you are on the vine, but everyone should follow his posts routinely whenever you need good laughs.
Warning: One should not consume beverages when reading a post by Gtouch, as contents may come into contact with keyboards or other computer components.
Alan, first let me state that I don't agree with the law as stated by the Federal Supreme Court, but as stated by the FSC in the hearing this summer " You do not have to provide ID to any law enforcement officer". I think that having and presenting basic ID should not be an issue, but the "PC" outlook is that to require ID is unfair to the foreign criminals and therefor is not required.
Unfortunately, do to the FSC, this lady has rock solid case against the police department and will probably receive a huge settlement.
So what you are saying is this....You get pulled over for a violation and you don't have to provide a legal drivers license or proof of insurance. If that is the case why does anyone bother to get a Drivers License or insurance or obey any vehicle laws. I don't see this woman winning any civil case unless the jury is strangled into submission. You can see exactly how MOST folks feel about one who is never accountable for anything. Though you might make a good lawyer for her.
So let me get this straight, she was speeding and putting people's lives at risk because she had to pee? Then she was refusing to comply with the officer and even stated that he should take her to jail? Are all the people upset aware how many officers are shot and killed during traffic stops? Are all the people upset aware that a gun doesn't care what age or gender is behind the trigger? I hope they revoke her license, press as many charges as they can ring up, just because you are old an ornery doesn't mean you can put the public's safety at risk and consider yourself above the consequences. I'm sure your granny is very sweet to her grandchildren, but I want her ornery a$$ off the roads if she's going to risk killing me every time she has to pee.
Peter Jacobs, your comment makes no sense and shows an obvious hostility to cops. So this woman should get special treatment because of her age? Why? Then how about black people get "special" treatment because they commit more crimes than white people. Don't like it so much now huh. The law has to be equally applied to ALL citizens, regardless of age. She's not above showing her license simply because she's old.

Yeah, WHAT ELSE, and you can go f' yourself, too.
boog a loo 22
She should have handed him her license and proof of insurance. Sweet little frail grandma with a bladder infection.......boohoo. Just give him your license and proof of insurance. You know if she would have done as he asked and then explained her situation he probably would have said slow down and have a nice day, but oh no! She was stalling and she didn't want a ticket for speeding, so she thought she could play the church going piano playing 77 year old grandma with a bladder infection card.....it back fired didn't it?
Alan, Please re-read my post. I do not agree with the law as stated by the FSC. I think everyone should carry basic ID, and if stopped for a legitimate reason, be required to show it.
It is the current administration in Washington DC that does not want ID required. They fought it in the supreme court this summer over illegal aliens, and they are fighting it again now in courts on multiple levels trying to allow anyone to vote without ID(even the illegal aliens).
I would make a terible laywer, I'm allergic to BS.
Glen, I read your post and i was just venting my anger at the situation and not you. I know the ID problem for voting and i agree with you on that. This woman though is not going to win a lawsuit over not complying and being arrested which was her wish. State Law states you must furnish a legal Drivers License and proof of Insurance. Vehicle registration included. She was stopped for exceeding the speed limit which is violation. You then pull out your ID and other paperwork and your on your way in minutes. Maybe even a warning. If you sit and make excuses and argue with law enforcement then do not provide information required the officer can then state if you do not you can be arrested and you state go ahead arrest me. Well that's exactly what happened. Stupid does not know age. This woman got what she asked for.
Am I the only one here who thinks they were both in the wrong?
Grandmama should have bowed down to him. His rapid-fire comments brooked no argument. When she tried to explain about her medical situation, he did NOT have intimate knowledge of WHY she was going to explain her hesitancy. Bladder infections, for those who have never had one, make you pee. All the time. And it HURTS when you do it. Think you can cut off that burning stream because an officer wants you to provide him with information? Nope. If Grandmama were wearing depends, my guess is moving was the LAST thing she wanted to do. Even if she weren't wearing them, moving is the LAST thing one wants to do.
Grandmama was likely a little salty from her compromised condition. I've had those infections numerous times. It's an all-night affair, wrapped in a blanket, praying you can last long enough to get to the clinic. I'll guarantee you I would NOT be in the best condition the morning after. Cut HER some slack.
In support of HIM: We don't know what preceded this citation. Did somebody assault him? Did he get ripped a new one by the preceding violator? Was he told by his supervisor he needed to up his count on tickets, and "Don't fall for any old lady babble!" Quotas cover the annual policeman's ball, you know.
And she was less than respectful to a simple command.
Isn't Texas a hanging state?
She should be charged with Capitol Stupidity at the very least.
Speeding
Stalling to show I.D. and insurance
Arguing with the officer
AND from what I saw in the video
Simple Assault and Battery on a L.E.O.
----"Go ahead" she says after the officer tells her he will arrest her. Well she did get what she wanted.
the po-po was in the wrong! Let the family win millions! No donuts for you!
The public servant is the criminal.
Are Cops Constitutional?
http://www.constitution.org/lrev/roots/cops.htm
Even granny goose has to show her license.
@boog a loo 22
I was quoting frosty-732524 in post #1.70. The old bitty should have complied with the officer instead of arguing with him. She was stalling and being an old b!tch!
Uh, if you read the record on the incident, she didn't refuse. She didn't resist the arrest. She requested enough time to get the documents for him. In seconds, he proves what a big powerful man he is by beating a 77 year-old woman into submission. This aggressive violent monster representative of the ultimate power of the state to beat you into submission chose to do this to her instead of any number of methods of obtaining reasonable compliance over a speeding ticket. Failure to produce a license is just another traffic infraction and he could have just added that to the speeding infraction. There's plenty of information available to him about her including the registration plate on the car and the VIN number for him to verify who she is and even bring up a picture of her and her last driving license in his patrol car that this was completely unnecessary.
Don't flatter yourself, swagganut. Your ideas are neither original nor complicated, just wrong-headed.
You DO, actually have to comply with the lawful commands of a police officer who is pursuant of his duties, and in a timely manner, not at a pace which suits some inner clock in your head, and certainly not using your "SLOWS AS TIME IN DOING IT".
If you don't, you will get cuffed and arrested, just as this stupid woman was. This is not overuse, or misuse, of police authority, it is just the rational handling of an apparent misdemeanor driving offense.
What is the police officer supposed to do, wait there for minutes or even hours while you await the correct moment to comply?
Be serious.
This woman brought the situation on herself and has nobody else to blame.
...and you know it is true how? Because she says so?
She certainly did not seem in a hurry to hand over her license. Moreover, if you cannot control your bladder, you either need to stop driving, or wear depends. What you cannot do is write yourself your own version of the traffic laws.
The old lady was treated as her conduct deserves. Here family complaining about the embarrassing affect of the police video, which they obtained and released, is ridiculous.
I truly hope that neither the police nor the town apologizes, and that she is force to pay her traffic citation.
I can not believe the way some of you people think and we wonder why our country is in the mess it is in. So many people have absolutely no respect for anyone but themselves and sometimes I think that they don't have any respect for themselves. You think you can do as you please freedom of speech, freedom of whatever, the right to do this that and the other thing. Come on people get real since when is it okay to not comply with a police officer when he or she ask you for your ID when you are caught speeding? Just show it to him or her and if you don't have one and you are driving, well I guess you get what you deserve....a ticket, you broke the law! It is a good thing you are in the minority when it comes to your thought process otherwise it would be a free for all and nobody would have respect for anyone.
@westerner8933
Wow! I hope you never need an officers assistance. Your hatred towards the police makes me think you did something wrong and got busted. Keep it clean and you won't have any problems!
Am I the only one who saw this headline at the top of the page? Hmm kinda says it all to me.
Interesting fantasy life, westerner. I wonder how it is being required to show proper licensing and registration to operate a vehicle amounts to getting sodomized.
If you've left the United States, I doubt you'll be missed.
@TheGraveDigger and for that matter anyone else who says the cop is in the wrong.
1)The woman refused to had over her license. She could have explained while she got her license. I never have mine ready because my hands are on the dash where the cop can see them so he/she knows I have no intent to cause harm. Wait an minute is still refusal.
2) The woman was asked four times and never complied. It shouldn't take four times of an officer doing his job to get what should be an automatic thing.
3) In the video after he told her that if she did not hand over her paperwork he would arrest he. She gave him permission to arrest her. He had to tell her several times to step out of the car and she refused. The applied force was necessary. It complies with the fact that she resisted arrest.
4) this officer is not the reason for this woman's grief from callers and whatnot. The people to blame for her constant callers and grief of embarrassment are caused by her actions and her granddaughters choice to place this video on the internet and make a fuss of it.
Cops do not know what a person may be on(drugs, alcohol ect....) they do not know if a person has a gun or something else deadly. therefor more than likely only a really stupid lawyer will take the case--if a case is made. There is no way the cop can be in the wrong for handling the situation the same way he would have had it been a 22 year old woman. He acted in the proper manner to keep himself and the woman safe. And many may not see the way he treated the woman as keeping her safe but he did. If she had forced the situation to go further into possible violence he would have had to take further actions. the lady forced the situation to what it was.
yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh to our texas police officer. the lady broke the law. what part did the woman not understand
This is bull crap-If an officer let everyone refuse to show driver lic. and proof of insurance which is the law to drive-just because a person says they have to pee and wont give the Lic. and insurance to an officer then she sould be the one to apolize---- you broke the law woman -you knew you would need to show a driver Lic. and insurance- what makes you special not to do that???????????????????????????????
Really sad how all of you are jumping to JUDGEMENT and RASH SENTENCING.
Elderly folks with anger issues usually have an underlying mental condition.
Do you think her family will admit this now?
The Officer needed to have had shown more reservation on his professional actions, altercation upon this elderly lady.
No matter her guilt, she should have been handled with due care.
He should have had his anger and strength UNDER CONTROL to Handle her with more Respect.
It makes me question this officer's professional training.
Our society really has become so desensitized to the respect of Life, no matter what age the person is.
Imagine how this officers of this type handle your drunk belingerant kids, or your lostmentally ill homeless family members?
When this officer is truly under the pressure of a true LIFE and DEATH situation, what instincts of his will react?
I
Jennifer, please google cop shootings at traffic stops.
You will notice that a few of those shootings are done by old folks. I heard a story about this 80 year old man that was speeding in a convertable. An officer pulled him over and went up, fully identified himself and got the old man's license and registration. They spoke for a few minutes, the old man was happy to oblige the officer. The officer went back to his car to check the license and registration, everything checked out. He walked up the to car a second time and died from a 44 caliber pulled though the vest as the old man shot him.
Explain to me how you would handle someone unwilling to co-operate in a traffic stop with that in mind.
He warned her she could be arrested. She told him to go ahead. The officer was just complying with her request, even though she couldn't be bothered to comply with his. Sorry, lady, but you brought this on yourself. The original story said she had just left church. I have to wonder, if she had a bladder infection and had to go so bad, why didn't she use the facilities at church before she left? Or was the whole "church" thing just a line to get sympathy?
I'm not sticking up for the lady but working in an emergency room and seeing women with "bladder infections, UTI's", they can be in and out of the bathroom every 5 to 10 seconds. Urinating or not they may feel like they have to go and can't.
So it would be a defense/reason for the speeding that a judge might even accept and let you off. But not an excuse for not presenting the ID. If anything, you would think a person who was in a legitimate hurry would want to have the ID ready for the officer to expedite the whole process because the officer's job is to write you a ticket, not decide if you have a reason to not pay it. It sucks to get caught for speeding because we all do it, but if you REALLY need to make it somewhere and getting pulled over would screw up your plans, it would be best not to speed 11 mph in the first place.
she didnt refuse the ID, the cop was being a @!$%# to a tax payer and wanted her to get her ID at his speed. traffic laws are not public safety laws, they are extortion laws only meant to generate revenue.
your an idiot swagganaut how are traffic laws not safety laws, so it safe to go 50 mph around a school when kids are around
because they dont write the laws with safety in mind, its with money and control in mind. common sense would dictate that you do not do 50 mph around a school, even with traffic laws people still do that so your point is moot.
when the speed limit was reduced to 55, it had nothing at all to do with safety and when it was raised, had nothing to do with safety. when laws take place of common sense, we lose common sense in place of laws that dont work anyways.
Pt 2. would you be so sympathetic if they were looking for someone who fit her description if they had just ran over a kid and killed them? Or if they had been given the low down on a granny hauling a box of AK 47's and ammo? Officer didn't know what to expect. How many officers have been shot dead because a driver didn't LOOK LIKE THEY COULD HURT A FLEA.
Swagganaut, you truly are an idiot. Speed limit laws ARE safety laws.
okay so when the speed limit was reduced to 55 was that because it was safer? okay so when they raised them again, was that because it was safer? i understand the safety of wanting to manage speeds and uses of roads but most of it is pretty common sense and everything else is covered under reckless driving, posted signs and w/e are fine. if safety had anything to do with traffic laws then they would not base the fines on how much it cost to issue and process the ticket plus profit when we already pay taxes for that. if safety was in mind then they are doing a horrible job at it.
Swagganaut, You get back what you put out there. This woman knows the law and the officer shouldn't have to ask her to get her paperwork in order. We should do that automatically out of courtesy for the officer and ourselves. Wasting time so you can prove a point is really stupid and made even more stupid by requesting to be arrested. (go ahead) Request to be arrested. Then resisting arrest by not complying with stepping out of the vehicle. Make all the excuses you want for this grandmother, but if it were my grandmother, she would never be treated this way since she would never have treated the officer in such a disrespectful manner.
You seem to want to argue just for argument sake. I can't believe you are really this obnoxious or disrespectful for any other reason.
when you feel you have been wronged, do you just suck it up and let it go? i as a citizen do not have to make someone else's life or job easier, i would fault both these people but i would put most blame on the cop for being unprofessional, she violated a traffic law and he dragged her our her car because she was being argumentative. do you see a suspect in every citizen? that cop sure looks like he does.
if one does not follow through with their convictions then who are they? if no one stands to tyranny is there really any troubles? when good people follow bad laws, bad men kill good people.
Swagganaut, you can talk speed limit all you want. The woman broke the law... period.
The officer followed protocol. He does not not need to apologize.
Swagganaut, You appear to base your argument on feelings about authority in general. I happen to think that cops can be bullies and screw over people for nothing at times. In this case, granny was caught speeding. She then insists on telling a story before providing her ID. The officer did not escalate this incident, she did. He can't do his job if he cannot meet resistance with appropriate force. She forced this issue and he handled it correctly. Perhaps you should watch the video a couple of times and actually listen to the audio. Keep in mind that she was caught speeding. When you are wrong, you don't get to be a jerk and expect to get away with it...
if all you can tout is "the law" then you are not a free person, you are controlled by "the law." i would ask if she was endangering anyone through her speed in order to determine if she is a criminal deserving of arrest. if protocol is to treat citizens as a threat then that is why they lack any given respect.
hmm, so the appropriate force is to drag her from her car and create a situation where your judgement is questioned? i would of thought he could just let her tell her story then ask once more for her ID and at that point if she refused a warrant would be issued for her arrest. he is suppose to be professional, not her.
i would agree she dug her own hole but the cop was unprofessional and that is my problem with authority, stop the attitude and deal with it, be a leader and resolve the situation instead of using brute force.
Can't wait till swagga-moron takes his tough guy &@#$!-the-cops attitude out and gets the crap beaten out of him by some policeman for mouthing off and acting like the total tool he obviously is. And hopefully tased too...
Swagganut, The officer CAN let her tell her story, AFTER she does what he asks. It doesn't work the other way around. No officer upon catching a traffic violator is REQUIRED to listen to a song and dance before getting id and such. Have you ever been to traffic court? Did the judge listen to your story BEFORE asking if you are pleading guilty or not guilty? There is such a thing as procedure. If the officeds that the woman has no license, all the stories in the world don't make a difference...
Swagger, whether you or I like the posted speed limits or not is not the issue. The fact is that the posted speed limit IS the law and you as a driver are required to obey that law.
When a cop stops you and asks for your license and registration, he doesn't care about your excuses. He wants the paperwork first. He wants to make sure he's talking to a licensed driver and not someone whose license has been suspended, or perhaps never had one to start with. He wants to make sure that the registration matches the vehicle. Then I'm sure he will give you all the time in the world to proclaim your innocence.
She was wrong.
Swaggernaut, do I just turn the other cheek, not always but I do look inside to see what I am doing before attaching anything to someone else. As to this specific situation, this grandmother is completly wrong. As to does the police officer see a suspect in everyone, no, only those he sees breaking laws that he is required to enforce. I would say that if you break a law, even the small ones, you are a suspect, not just being perceived as a suspect. As to pulling her out of her car, it has been stated that he should have called for backup and waited. I find that very uncompassionate, that she said she need to go to the bathroom as her reason for speeding. Of course, she knew she was speeding since she had an excuse waiting for the officer. Let's get real, he isn't the problem in this equation. Do some officer get attitudes, probably quite often. I would suspect that you never have an attitude, so your response to any situation is always calm and rational. NOT, I know mine isn't.
One rule each of should live by, DON'T POKE THE BEAR. She should have had her license, registration and insurance information waiting for the officer when she was pulled over. Rational response to being pulled over, then tell him why. Much better response than whining about why while delaying your opportunity to get to a bathroom.
O.K. Swagganut, I'll bite;
The highway speed limits were lowered in the 70's because of consumption and the need to stop using so much fuel. There was on oil embargo at the time and fuel was scarce and expensive. I remember waiting in lines to get gas and sometimes being refused because the station was out. Ahhh, the good old days.
Now, you state speed limits are only about profit and not safety. You do realize when a state takes the limit from 55 to a higher limit the state loses federal funding for that highway? You see 55 is a national standard here in the U.S. for SAFE driving. Speed limits in MOST residential neighborhoods are 25 to 40 m.p.h. Why? So you can SAFELY stop, the 15 m.p.h. (to 55)makes a huge difference when physics are involved. If you really want to question limits for profit, look at areas where the speed limit changes rapidly or goes up and down on certain roads. Not ALL roads are like that.
Now, had the woman in question explained her ordeal to the officer as she was giving him her information(like most people do) there would not have been a problem. She acted belligerent and even put her hands on the officer a few times which in reality IS Assault and Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, she was not charged with that. Also, putting your hands up in front of an officer when they are removing you from your vehicle IS resisting arrest, once again, she was not charged with that.
No one likes getting pulled over. It's a sever pain sometimes. If you comply it will be over as fast as the officer can go (trust me he'd rather be busting a real criminal). The ONLY people who make it rough are the ones who think they are above the law, hard-asses, drunks and the mentally ill.
Hell, I am certified bat-@!$%# crazy in my state and can grasp these concepts. How come you can't?
No sympathy from me, she should have shown her ID. She deserves no apology and got exactly what she asked for.
You shouldn't tell a cop "no you listen to me".
You also don't tell a cop to go ahead and arrest you cause he/she probably will.
She had an attitude the whole time with that cop and nowhere did I see him getting mad. She was just trying to take control of the situation and failed.
he had the attitude, he is a public servant first. as long as he didnt think there was any danger he should have let her explain her medical condition and things would have turned out okay.
i respect no cops who dont respect the citizen and this cop dont respect nothing but his attitude.
It appears to me that the overwhelming concensus here is that the intelligent, respectful people agree with the officer. And maybe those in the minority have a problem with the cop because he/she is a criminal?
Swagganaut, I'm starting to think you're not a model citizen. Have you ever been arrested?
nice that your assume something based on a difference in opinions? can i assume that you are a subject of an authoritative power?
Perhaps because your opinion seems to oppose all reasonable thought people are wondering if you are a criminal. Are you aware of how quickly things can turn deadly during a traffic stop? You seem to be arguing simply to be obstinate...
Well Swagganaut, have you?
NB - do you write copy for the GOP campaign? You'd be a natural.
Should have tazed her nasty old ass...
The family needs to shut up and quit expecting anything from that police officer. How the hell do they think they are? Are they or the elderly woman above the law? The elderly woman, their grandmother BROKE THE LAW,and refused to show ID and did not obey the officer.SHE was WRONG! There needs to be NO apology from that officer. He is not there to take @!$%# off of a citizen who does not comply.ANYONE can lie like that elderly woman did and make up stories.Aubrey McQue SHUT UP you law abuser!
Typical of TEXAS. Cops still thinking it's the wild west. I bet the cop wouldn't have treated his grandmother that way or tolerate it if some other cop had treated her that way. What happend to common sense? oh sorry It's Texas.
broke the law!! broke the law!! omg she must be such a horrible person and a great danger to society, im glad shes in jail now where she can no longer harm any of us.
Typical of COPS EVERYWHERE, not just TEXAS! There are stories all over the US about 'roid raging cops doing some strange stuff, applying way too much force too soon!
Stop hiring from within the military and getting these PTSD nut-jobs for cops!
What part of this incident was strange? Asking for her license, or asking for her registration? You people who hate on cops remind me of little children who just cannot accept that Mommy and Daddy are in charge. What adorable little rebels you were. What dumb-a$$ed jerks you became.
Machspeeddemon.....I was just going to say that Swagganaut was exactly what you said "A Rebel With Out a Cause" Never wants to be responsible or accountable for anything, period! What everyone else thinks or Laws state hes immune and even though he lives here he just "Doesn't have to" abide to anything he so wishes. Must be nice to just think I can do whatever I wish and no one can touch me because I am free. Swagganaut get a life will you. All you are is just one human out of 7.040 billion folks in the World. Or u can just go to a deserted Island and live by your OWN set of Laws or rules.
To me it is very simple: you refuse ID reatedly, and challenge the cop to arrest you. What the hell do you think should happen? And I understand she is elderly, but if she is too old to comply with the law then she should not drive. The end. When I have been pulled over (which I will confess has been a few too many times) I am polite and the cop has always given me a chance to explain myself - sometimes I avoid a ticket, sometimes I don't, sometimes the officer reduces the infraction for me but still issues a ticket.
I have never felt disrespected by an officer, but i have never disrespected them.
Alan, I'd vote for the island. Is it possible to vote him onto the island? I'd bet Swagganaut's family would watch him sail away toward that island, while waving and laughing, "Good riddance!" Someone said it must suck to be him. I think it must super-sized-suck to be an immediate family member. People who are that intolerant of rules oftentimes cannot rule/control themselves.
CatInahat, she sure seemed to be handling her advanced years well as she reared back and gave that officer attitude, didn't she?!
I hope my criticisms do not result in the dogs of Swagganaut being kicked.
You know, I have read and seen articles about people even older than this woman who have committed heinous crimes.
Just because she was 77 didn't make her some innocent little old lady. A 77 year old driving 16 miles over the speed limit would make me suspicious...then add to that her acting like she had no clue what he was talking about when it came to giving him her info...and telling him wait a minute while I ramble out an excuse...immediately made me wonder what she was hiding and why she didn't comply. He told her if she didn't give him the info he was going to take her to jail, she said go ahead, then tried to look all shocked that he was going to follow through. I also don't think he "dragged" her out of the car, I think he tried to get her out of the car...and her refusal to comply landed her on the ground.
Could he have handled this different...of course, but if she would have been a lady and handled herself as such...she wouldn't have an embarrassing video out about herself.
Oh, now not only is Grandma with the bladder infection a criminal, she is no longer your definition of a "lady". Can't make this stuff up. America is screwed.
Well, she certainly didn't act like a lady (I saw the video) so no, she doesn't deserve to be called one. I'd call her a b!tch before I'd call her a lady. She didn't comply with a lawful order in a timely manner, all the while giving excuses, she refused to get out of the car when requested to, she told the officer to go ahead and arrest her, she deserved what she got. I don't care if she was 77, the officer acted appropriately. And yes, I've been pulled over plenty of times in my time and at no time did I ever treat a cop the way this lady treated this man, because I wanted to be treated with decency and respect. My rule of thumb is, if you give respect to police, you get it in return. It's a two way street.
The part I saw, she acted like a "lady". Have a bad day as a citizen, get pulled from your car violently and arrested. Doesn't matter if she's 77, who the f--- cares; just a wench, not a lady. Don't show respect for age. Now if a cop has a bad day someone can get shot or killed. The cops get paid good money and get fantastic pensions in many states, retire at a young age.
Show some restraint, omg she didn't hand over her id, drag her out of her car and arrest her on the spot. Now do you know why "officers" have had charges of brutality in other areas. Google police brutality and see how many examples you come up with.
She might not have been right, but gets no benefit of the doubt; someone is maimed or killed by the "police", many get on and give that "officer" the benefit of the doubt. Fellow ciitzens unite, but not for police "brutality" or insensitivity towards anyone. Who has the gun and carries all the force; that is the one who should be more humble.
let me see. police pull you over and you are not going to do as he asks? hhmmm? you are going to jail because you did not want to comply with the officers request. you are not very smart. you need to appologize to the officer for being stupid.
exactly. seriously, who the hell challenges an officer to arrest you!?
I'd also suspect, since she's raised children, that she's familiar with: "Not 'a minute', now."
The grandmother was being pretty arrogant.. just watch the video. While I do feel for her, she really was in the wrong and her age has nothing to do with compliance when pulled over for a violation and refusal to show her license and registration.. till she was good and ready to!!! Her granddaughter is the source of her embarassment, what a moron she is to post grandma on the internet... perhaps grandma should surrender her license until she can obey a legal officers request to show proof when requested!!
You fought the law and the law won, next time you will comply and maybe you will be let you go with a warning. Be an arrogant ass and you will be removed by force.
Should of Pee on the Officer if she had to go when he pull her from the vehicle.
I disagree with your spelling, but agree with what you said, but...
ONLY AFTER SHE COMPLIES AND SHOWS THE OFFICER HER I.D.!!!
If she would have given him her drivers license she may have been going home 19 seconds earlier. Grandaughter is clueless! You have to show you drivers license and proof of insurance if your caught speeding!!! She should be embarrased for not cooperating with the officer when clearly at fault. At what age does the law state that your supposed to get special treatment?
Apparently 77 years old
Her granddaughter claims that she her grandmother is upset that she has been reduced to a video and opinion polls. Translation -- "I assumed everyone would agree with us and be outraged at the police. Now that I've been proven horribly wrong, we are upset at being embarrassed." Maybe, just maybe, the granddaughter should have taken more than 19 seconds to decide whether or not she should make this video public. Sorry that you're upset it didn't go your way, but you should have considered that before releasing the video. Your grandmother was wrong. The speeding is not a big deal. The refusal to follow the officer's repeated instructions is.
i do not have to give an officer my license the second he asks for it. i can take my sweet time going slow motion and there is no law that says otherwise. he was being a typical thug cop who thinks they are above the citizen that pays them.
stop giving authorities so much power they dont have!!!
That's for you, Swagganaut. It's your right to take your sweet time growing up, too; a right you've obviously exercised.
Well said Machspeeddemon. I'll beat Swagganaut has no respect for his/her parents either.
so should i be happy that a government creates laws just to extort money from people? speed laws are just that, extortion, there is no safety aspect behind speed limits. reckless driving covers excessive speed in certain zones and endangering public safety. this cops is suppose to be professional and be trained on how to handle these type of situations but to people like you i guess its okay to treat all citizens like blood thirsty cop killers who must be hiding something. why else would you need to drag a citizen out the car for a traffic violation?
Swagganaut,
The government does not create laws. The people create laws, if you don't like them, change them. Accept it, this woman was in the wrong. We made the laws, we need to take responsibility to follow them or work to change the ones we do not like (but we have to follow them until they are changed, not just say " Oh well, since I disagree with this law, I don't have to follow it".
Swag, I have read many of your comments on here and I have to assume you are either an outlaw yourself or you are this woman's granddaughter. The officer repeatedly said she needed hand over her license and proof of insurance. Yes, she said "In a minute" but then he said that if she did not hand it over she could be arrested and she said "Go ahead". She gave permission to being arrested over handing over her driver's license and proof of insurance. But when he told her to step out of the vehicle she refused. That is why he dragged her out of the car. Had this been an 18 year old or a 21 year old or a 25 year old or even a 50 year old, would you still be saying the same thing. Her medical condition had nothing to do with why she did not hand over a license or POI. Had she handed it over the first time she was asked for it, she would have been out of there a heck of a lot earlier and easier. She was speeding and had she not had a driver's license or POI or if she would have an outstanding warrant or numerous unpaid tickets it would have changed how a ticket would have been written or if they would have arrested her or even had her car towed. No matter who you are or where you are when you are pulled over for a traffic violation you have to hand them your driver's license and POI and registration even if they do not write you an actual ticket. There are plenty of older people that are bank robbers, drug runners, child molesters, kidnappers, etc. so to say she was a harmless grandma is ridiculous. Hindsight is 20/20 and had this officer been shot, ran over, or beaten by her he would be dead and she could still be on the run. I know my grandma when she was 77 could still give a mean spanking and you did not want to mess with her, but she also knew how to respect the law and taught all of us grandchildren that you do what the officer tells you to if you have nothing to hide you won't be in any trouble. Manners and common sense go both ways, had she had enough manners to follow a lawful order she would have never had this happen to her in the first place. Then again had her granddaughter not thought it would be cool or funny or more sympathetic to a jury to release the video to the public, she would not be embarassed either.
and she must be a danger to society right? why else would a cop need to arrest someone who was being argumentative? im sure she had some drugs on her or she just killed someone for him to have enough power to arrest her. dragging her out her car. im not siding with the lady but im not siding with the cop, the cop should have handled this very easily but he turned it into his power trip.
lawmakers and cops create most of the criminals in our prisons and most are non violent (least the convictions are), if you did not intend nor commit harm against another citizen then there is not a reason for imprisonment nor arrest. you seem to be the type to think there is a criminal in every person.
Again, your bias against authority is blinding you to the actual circumstances here. A person who refuses to indentify themselves is a red flag to officers when an incident has occurred (speeding). What purpose does it serve to aggravate the officer when you have already been nailed for speeding? No one here is arguing your right to take as long as you like producing your required documents, but you cannot argue when your behavior results in consequences you do not like. Granny was free to do as she pleased, the officer was free to take appropriate action. He did, she lost...
SwaggaNUT, Speed restrictions on public highways do protect motorists and passengers. Years ago during the fake "fuel crisis", speed limits across the country were dropped to 55 mph. Guess what happened? Traffic fatalities dropped dramatically. Crashes at lower speeds result in fewer injuries and deaths. That is not opinion, it is fact. Artificially low speed limits in small towns often ARE speed traps designed to produce revenue. Your argument that ALL traffic regulations are simply to raise money is foolish...
"do you not understand that we are paying the police salary and as such we are their employer and due the respect of that position unless we take action otherwise. the police do not own us and they are not our parents nor are they allowed to lord over us, all the cop had to do was listen to her story and thats it.
cops need to learn respect and who pays their bills."
This is probably the dumbest thing ever written. She broke the law by speeding. Just because we are taxpayers we do NOT get to ignore the instructions of law enforcement. Otherwise, we would get to "choose" what laws we obey and which ones we don't. She had 19 seconds. She made excuses and was trying to make more. Why? Because she KNEW she was speeding, and got caught. What law gives us the right to argue with a legal instruction from an officer? Which law gives us the right to not present our ID when requested in a stop? What purpose was "just a minute"? It was to argue and try to get out of it. If she REALLY had to "go" she would have given her ID right away, and asked him to hurry because she "had to go". Instead, grandma wanted to argue, and here we are...
By this logic there would be no reason to arrest a drunk driver until they have hurt someone.
2AmmRight,
You do not have to show your ID. This summer, The Federal Supreme Court ruled that you do not have to carry or provide ID. This was the outcome of a law suit filed by the Obama administration against the state of Arizona. The administration is currently re-iterating that position by filing multiple law suits across the country to block or repeal ID laws at the state level.
I do not agree with this, I'm just stating the facts. In my opinion, the only reason to not have and show ID is if you have or are doing something illegal.
A DL is proof of having the privilege to drive.
Too bad she isn't an "illegal alien". OBAMA would have the cop thrown in jail then he would give her a DREAM!
What sort of ignorant fantasy land do you live in?
Her family should apologize to the police, and to this officer.
Valid, I think "Menoseeno" somehow translates to "mescaline"
You are trying to bring politics into this. Lets look at some facts. Obama is wrong for not enforcing our imigration laws to the fullest extent of the law. Obviously YOU are a dimwit of a person. Obama and his people have deported more Illegals than any other President. Your Republican God Reagan Made over three million Illegals Legal. YOUR other God Bush, wanted to open the borders of the United States to free travel for all Illegals. I am a registerd Republican, but I have to vote for Obama this time because Romney is a Bozo when it comes to common sense. Romney is great at CLOSING down companies and sending jobs overseas. Romney is great at obviously hiding taxable money legally in other countries. Romney is not to good at lying though, any common person such as myself can see right through him.
Thank God that the majority of us understand that this 77 year old woman was wrong. Regardless who you are, when a police officer pulls you over and ask for your license or some form of ID, you comply. Thank God that's all that happen to her. Let this be a lesson for all of us. Now let's come together and and continue to work to get this country going in the right direction.
at least we are not talking about politics.
let me see. I get pulled over by the police. He asks me for my lisence and I say no. hmmmmm? I think i need three hots and a cot. maybe I need free medical or dental work? Thats the ticket. Send me to jail. lol
Was the officer polite or pushy? She was wrong to be speeding but being dragged out of her car at 77 years old sounds kind of wrong by the officer also.....
Before anyone comments here I ask you to please watch the entire video
http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/77-Year-Old-Grammas-Arrest-Caught-on-Video-169569466.html
BOTH of them had an attitude and the video is embarrassing for both participants. The officer for not having the common sense to deal with a senior citizen and the senior citizen for thinking she is above the law.
I can understand the officer's frustration more, however, because all Miss Bedford needed to do was show some ID. She could have explained her situation while handing over ID, it's not that difficult. Officer's don't always have time to deal with stubborn people, and when the woman refused to step out of the car and told the officer to "go ahead" and arrest her I got annoyed for him.
It was a senior citizen of 77 years that came out of his house shooting at my dad and his partner when he was a cop. He was loading that gun so fast, I'm not sure how many rounds he got off before my dad's partner had to kill him. I know that their cop car was shot all up and my dad got hit by 3 of them. You can't underestimate anyone these days. Just sayin...
No you follow the law, in some areas the police would have pull their weapons when approaching the vehicle. She is not excused for being 77 years old, not saying she is a criminal but we do have some 77 year old criminal in our society. Do as the officer says and if you do not agree with the officer tactics then you go to the local police station and file a complaint with the officer superiors.
Uhhh, Boltonbill you may want to see this(Your gun play is normal for the south comment);
The CDC has a fatality map if you are interested. The results may surprise you as I was surprised as well.
http://wisqars.cdc.gov:8080/cdcMapFramework/mapModuleInterface.jsp
If the map does not show up put; All Injury(in first field) ,Violence -related(2nd field) Firearm(3rd field)..
The state I live in has certified me as insane. How come I can find facts but most of the "normal" populace can't? Really makes me wonder who needs to be labeled as sane or not..
He did not give her a chance. Police are getting out of hand.
He asked her 10 TIMES to get out of the car. What don't you understand?
He didn't give her a chance? are you f__— kidding me? you are blind AND stupid!
He's not blind, but he is sure stupid. Also against any Law and Order type. An excuse maker for others that don't want to be accountable for their OWN actions.
He also asked her several times for her license and insurance. She refused to cooperate from the word go. She refused to step out of the vehicle at this point, which brings her into a more serious realm. Resisting arrest.
I see this every single day. Elderly drivers failing to yield, speeding, failing to signal, cutting people off, speeding and in general just being rude.
Age does not automatically grant you respect. In a situation like that you say "Yes, sir" and have your license and insurance ready immediately upon being stopped for the officer.
My mother was pulled over for speeding due to two aggressive drivers in larger vehicles. He pulled all three vehicles over. He had to write her a ticket, but had hers done very quickly and gave her the advice to "Contest it." He let her go without a problem and proceeded to the other two vehicles. Held them longer. All because she cooperated quickly and politely.
Scott, I didn't hear him ask 10 times!!! Maybe your hearing things?
the cop didnt want to hear her medical story so he keep asking for her license as she was tring to explain, he should have waited a few secs for her to finish then im quite sure she would have handed him a license and end of story but this cop had to be a prick and demand that she immediately obey his command and with the speed of lightning hand him her ID.
Swagganaut
what you can't reach for your ID and insurance information while you talk?
nope, i got a condition where i can only do one thing at a time. you wanna pull me out my car now?
Yes, you must be pulled from your car now. Breathing should have been your first priority. You chose to drive while knowing that, in your condition, you could do only one thing at a time. Now you are a non-breathing driver, which is against regulations. You will receive a post-mortem fine. Your relatives will be sent a bill for NBDD. (Non-breathing driver disposal.)
And a peaceful logic spread across the land...
She was rude and running her mouth from the get go. He came up politely...and she started in with her crap and telling an officer to "hurry it up" how rude and naive.
That's because he said it 13 times. I re-watched the entire video here: http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/77-Year-Old-Grammas-Arrest-Caught-on-Video-169569466.html
And he did in fact tell her to "get out of the vehicle" 13 times.
Swagganaut
I have read most of your posts here, it seems to me you share some traits in common with this woman. You seem to be argumentative, stubborn, defiant, belligerent, authoritarian, self-important pain in the butt.
You and this woman are the type of people that see the sign "please stay of the grass" and make a loud point of walking on it in defiance daring someone to challenge you about. BTW, traffic violations are criminal acts, they are classed as misdemeanors and in some jurisdictions you are required to go see a judge so drop the she's not a criminal" argument she is old enough to know the traffic laws and careless enough to ignore them.
Despite your assertions, just because you pay taxes you are not the police officers boss. yes, they are public servants however they are charged with enforcing the law not with putting up with rude behaviour or attitudes from petty minded folks, they have one of the worst jobs on the planet because nearly every time they interact with the public it is a negative experience, WHY? because they are there when someone is violating the law.
My last point, when you are pulled over by a police officer EVERYONE knows you will need to show DL, reg and proof of insurance so why was this a problem, and one last last point when is it ever a good idea to argue with a police officer(common sense).
whaaaahaaaa! This is one of the silliest things i've read in a loooong time. I've watched the video, read the article, and come to the following conclusion:
The cop is living in a world that has procedures in place, for a reason. To him a person is a person, and should not be judged by their appearance; not only because it's just not right, but because in his line of work such judgments can be life threatening. Just because somebody is old does not mean they are good. It does not mean they are honest and law abiding. It does not mean that they are above the law. He approached her with respect, and was shown none in return.
The old lady is living in a world where she gets to do whatever she wants because she's old, and dammit, she's earned it. Respecting seniors is lovely, but perhaps, instead we could just respect other people. Even cops. Or maybe it's not because she is old, she may have been just as unreasonable at 20 as she seems to be today....who am I to judge? But in any case she most definately has a problem with authority, an arrogant attitude, and a bad case of narcisism.
That officer gets up every morning, puts on his uniform and risks his life the protect and serve ordinary citizens. I understand that somewhere there is a vague and screwy rational to the whole anti-cop thought process that is all over this page, but reality is that our society can NOT function without laws, and we can not enforce those laws with out police officers. Anarchy is not fun, and it doesn't make for a good enviornment to raise children, do business, and otherwise live your life. Most people understand this, and are willing to accept some restrictions in order to maintain the standards of civilization. OTHER people are vain enough to believe that the police force's only function is to harass citizens, take all their money, and generally impede all personal freedom - most likely while twirling their moustaches and cackling maniacally. Look; it's not about YOU. It's about everyone else around you, and your refusal to see how your actions impact the world.
Granddaughter released the tape, humiliated her grandmother, and now they want to sue the cop? Speaking of not taking responsiblity for your own actions....Granny might get to keep SOME of her dignity if you just let this die...
the cop is so at fault he should definitely be fired for police brutality and abusing authority this is exactly the kind of bs that needs to be out of this country's police department. I mean all she was trying to tell him is she will be peeing either in her car, all over herself, or in his back seat. Instead of humoring the old lady who was understandably slow being that she is 77 years old he drags her out onto the pavement? @!$%# i thought he was about break her hip doing that and putting her in the hospital.
Also everyone thinks all officers are so giving because they "risk their lives everyday" so not true yeah there are times when the potential for an officer to be killed is high but there are also times where the chance of a cop dying is zero
Also this is definitely not the granddaughters fault for exposing the fact that a cop abusing her grandmother hell if my granny got dragged out of a cop car like that I would at that station 24 hours a day protesting and kicking and screaming until that hot headed prick was fired Cops almost always are total @!$%#s to everyone nice or criminal I got left outside in the rain while my car was locked because a cop wouldnt let me use his phone and the school was closed (it was closed five minutes before this) so I had to walk 14 miles home to get my spare walk to my friends then have him drive me back
And to the cop saying get out of the vehicle 13 times all he had to do was listen to her say what she had to say and then i gaurantee she wouldve handed over her licesnce this situation couldve been avoided by the cop he chose to make an example out of a 77 year old to say they cops are the law regardless we are not soviet russia we are not nazis seriously this is some borderline gestapo @!$%#
F*** THE POLICE
There right, I think she should apologize. When an officer of the law requests your information you do not argue with them, you do as your told. This woman felt as if she was entitled and didn't have to comply with his orders. She was wrong and paid the price. The officer did nothing he needs to apologize for.
With any luck - a texas brown shirt will pull your mother over and rip her out of the car. And before you argue that your mother would comply with the pig - I would argue that cops usually dont need an excuse to physically assault someone. God willing anyways...
Sure they will when you are argumentative and fail to cooperate. It all could have been avoided by having the requested materials ready upon stopping and with two simple words "Yes, sir."
It's called respect.
At that age mothers are supposed to know better than to ignore an officers request. Try to make it sound like whatever you want, the video shows she was in the wrong.
and there is your problem right there, "do as your told." so are we free citizens who own this country or are we just subjects of the government? she never refused to give her ID, she was just trying to explain a medical problem.
Go yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater, Swagganaut. It's your right: free speech. And don't bother with those pesky stop signs as intersections; obviously the government just put them there to oppress you. And those lines at the Department of Motor Vehicles? Clearly the government is trying to supress your right to barge ahead of everyone else.
Sometimes grown-ups have to do as they are told, lil' one. Your ability to reason has been compromised; perhaps it's time for your nap.
As part of being a citizen you are expected to follow the laws of your community. If you can not, then get out. The cop did not have to listen to her b.s. excuse about medical problem. She was just lying to attempt to get out of the ticket.
Had a restaurant that attracted older so called lady's. They were not lady's, rude, outspoken, ego centric, thinks the world owes them, women fits the description better then lady. I do think the cop could have changed the outcome, but is the world required to pander to select spoiled brats all the time.
its the attitude that im referring to, i didnt say nothing bout not following common sense laws. when authority members get attitudes, problems start. cops should never get an attitude, they should be professional and apply no emotion to the application of law. as a free citizen i do not have to follow laws that infringe on my god given rights, this is not the governments country, nor the local citys, this is our country and we demand to be treated like free citizens and not security threats.
id like to know the last time someone screamed fire in a theater? it seems to be brought up alot in debates and while i see the problem, it has nothing to do with free speech. its the same thing as making threats, your conspiring to harm and that is already a crime, yelling fire in a crowded theater where no fire is present is conspiracy to harm at least. trying to explain why you were speeding before proving proof of ID is not doing harm.
Swag - I've seen several of your posts regarding "intent to harm" and saying that traffic laws are just for revenue and really shouldn't be followed because there's "no intent to harm" behind them...ever heard of vehicular homicide or involuntary manslaughter with a vehicle? I'm sure if she had been speeding (which she was) and happened to kill someone crossing an intersection that her intent was not to harm them, but she did. Who knows, by pulling her over this officer may have prevented a tragedy. Traffic laws are for more than just revenue I can assure you...and I'd also like to point out that the vast majority of fine money collected by a city for traffic violations doesn't stay in that city, the money goes to the state...at least here in Texas.
She was a complete argumentative bitch. She felt she had no reason to respond to the requests of the officer. He gave her many opportunities to simply comply and she refused. He gave her a last opportunitity to either surrender her drivers license or be arrested and her statement was , ARREST ME. So he complied. As a prior Chief of police, he acted accordingly. She could have complied and gotten out of the vehicle, but no again she was argumentative and refused the officers requests and therefore she was removed and she fell to the ground. This incident stems from her noncompliance therefor she is the responsible party. All she had to do was surrender the Id and insurance and he would have listened more to her. But she felt she was in charge, and that he had to respond to her, and that's not the case. A traffic stop is a form of an arrest, where you are compelled to surrender to the requests of the officer. You are released from this arrest either by, a summons to appear, a written warning or a verbal warning...... Good Job Officer
How many times have we seen this played out. An officer says he is going to arrest someone and the person defiantly says go ahead then is shocked when it happens. If we are living in such a police state explain the video and the fact the family was able to get a copy. A police state would have this woman on a treadmill powering a lamp.
FOFL!!!!!!
Sharion...At the very least. Course now...Mr. Impatient Cop in a hurry to get to his favorite donut shop might have had the brains to realize she is an older woman. If she has what most 77 year olds do...two rotator cuffs that are shot to hell, just removing her seat belt is a day's work.
But why should American men consider anyone these days but themselves? For today's men it's bed 'em, impregnate 'em and leave 'em and then bitch because they got themselves preggers. Anyone else observing the leftover narcissism from their doting McParents?
How much do you hate men? I am a woman and I support the cop in this case.
Being old is not a cause to do what you want at your own pace, as her granddaughter says. What they want is a paycheck. Why else would the hire an attorney, release the video and refuse a sit down meeting to resolve the issue?
Get over it, she didn't comply with the cop's orders. Perhaps the cop could have handled it differently but there is not need for her to make him wait for the ID. If she needed to pee so badll why didn't she just give it to him to get it over witH?
cali - no doubt the granddaughter mistakenly assumed that there would be an outpouring of sympathy for an old woman yanked like that from her car.
Nope, very little anyway. Never mind that this office is a trained (allegedly) PROFESSIONAL (allegedly), who let himself go too far with a senior citizen who balked at his "authority".
Even 30 years ago, this would have been a non-issue. He'd have followed her home - perhaps in a patronizing "little woman" manner, and straightened it all out after she "went". Not any more, no siree Bob, now everyone just does the LEAST amount of effort, marginally doing their responsibilities. That cop should be ashamed.
It's funny how people complain about discrimination all the time except when it's to their benefit not to. Would anybody be complaining if it was a 30 year old male pulled out of the car? No. To treat her differently because she is 77 or a woman would be both age and gender discrimination. She thought she was being a smart ass and it turned out she was just a dumb ass. Apologize to her? Are you kidding me, she should be offering the apology. Her family is just as stupid as her for suggesting anything different. Believe me I realize cops do a lot of things wrong, but this was not one.
If this woman did have a bladder infection it can cause dementia-like symptoms which would include confusion and possible behavioral changes in the elderly.
correct
If she has dimentia then she certainly should not be driving a car, Anyway you look at it the officer asked her for her ID, She refused, he asked her to step out of the vehicle She refused, He told her he would have to arrest her if she did not comply, She did not comply...The officer had no other choice but to remove her from the car and then arrest her.
She did not refuse. She is 77 and with normal age is extremely slow in her movements. I recently got a speeding ticket (I was speeding), the cop pulled me over and professionally asked for my papers which I gave him but very slowly (I am 74). When he asked me to get out of the car, I complied but again slowly (I have leg problems). He held the door open and advised me to take my time. He gave me my ticket (which I later paid), held the door open and said good day. We then went our seperate ways. The cop in the article could have avoided all of this had he just used some common sense.
Speeding "Granny" is the one lacking common sense. She does not appear to have the limitations you do, so the circumstances are not the same. She was quick with her mouth but slow with her documents. She insisted that he listen to her story BEFORE she would give up her license. Simply keeping her mouth shut while getting out the items would have been fine, but no, she just couldn't do that.
She didn't use common sense and turned a simple traffic violation into a national exposure of her jerk behavior...
But Bob... where you actually did what to Officer said, albeit slowly like you said, you still DID WHAT THE COP SAID, SHE DID NOT.
Bob Ramos, watch the video again. She was extemely nimble when she threw back her head and shot that officer an "Oh, no, you di-int!" look.
It wasn't exactly a micro-expression: you'll see it. She was a long way from "extemely slow" in her movements.
I'll bet she's a tyrant to all who know and try to love her.
Take a good look at the posts from some of the so-called "men" on this thread...These are the men who want to "take their country back?" Well...at least now we know for certain how far back...You've got Alan in hyperhysterics. Steve making Supreme Court style judgements and capping it by calling a woman he never met a "bitch." Yep....The GenXers....still have muddy diapers, anger issues and still like their Neanderthal forebears...want to drag women out of cars by their hair and play Big Powerful Mr. Mister...Mr. Testosteroni out of control..roflmao.
I'm a female and yep, she was being a bitch. Now what?
They're not going to get much sympathy from the public. That woman was WRONG, and she got what she deserved.
And the anti-female redneck males continue their wars...silly little bois.
for being of that age and not knowing to follow a police officer's instructions is just plain stupid. perhaps her driving should be suspended for a time, so she can sit home and cry some more. she should be the one to apologize for being stupid, not the officer just doing his job.
If you look at all the comments here, it is obvious to anyone with a 4th grade education, that the general public supports the police in this case. Not saying they are always right.......but he did ask her 10 TIMES to step out of the car. Show your ID and go home and pee. She and her family are the ones that need to apologize, not the cop.
Scott...I don't buy the cops story...He asked her 10 times in 19 seconds? What the hell is that cop? A parrot? A mynah bird who repeats in rapid fire? Sorry...cops lie through their teeth...I ought to know...I saw one put his hand on a bible in a court of law and swear to a lie...He got what he deserved...I refused to plead guilty so he could get another notch in his ticket blitz belt. That cop was wrong and so is this one. That cop lied and I'd bet anything the bois in blue will line up and swear lies on a stack of Bibles...doesn't add up. How do you tell someone to get out of a car 10 times in 19 seconds?
The Bible dont mean @!$%#....It's a farce...
http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/77-Year-Old-Grammas-Arrest-Caught-on-Video-169569466.html
This is the video in its entirety. He told her to get out of the vehicle in rapid succession and said it 13 times. The entire event took just under 2 minutes from the time he approached the car, identified himself and told her why he had pulled her over to her being cuffed and stuffed. She refused from the get-go to comply with the directive to show him her DL and insurance. Try watching the video ewent.
I have to say, you ELDERLY teach us at a young age to obey the law and not be disrespectful to our elders and police, and here you do it yourself in the most condescending manner. I guess if I was on my menstrual cycle, I would not have to show my ID or registration if I got caught speeding? Hey, great idea! Next time I will act just like you, and your granddaughter who posted the video in hopes of getting some money out of this *(come on you know you did.... you could care less its ok, you were hoping all of America would back you and get you a new car huh!)* and your attorney who loves the free advertising cause he too hopes for money to help pay those student loans off.... so all of America, we too when we get stopped for speeding (wow, grandma? you held your pee while being asked REPETITIVELY FOR YOUR ID AND REGISTRATION huh?) should get away with it too! Then we would not need court! Or police, lets just be raunchy and treat a kind cop (trust me, I was raised by a cop) and a very patient one at that, like a condescending hateful person. Dragged you? Please.... realllllly? Your open mouth tells it all! You were so shocked that you had to obey the law JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE....practice what you preach! Your manipulation didn't work! Leave that cop alone. He could be out helping someone who was being robbed, or stabbed to death, or helping someone who was being abused, SOMETHING IMPORTANT other than your URINE AND BABY FIT PROBLEM!!!! Obey the law....
She does not deserve apology. She should have to apology to the police for making the situation in the first place.
Now what she says happened and what happened is two different stories. She sounds like a bitch that took advantage of a situation and now whats to cry foul play.
I dont usually side with the cops in situations of this nature. I have seen the video,as so have millions of other people. The officer clocked her way over the speed limit, that is indisputable by the lady and her family. I also am in my seventies, but if asked politely by an officer of the law for my license and insurance, I would give it to the officer immidiately. I hate to say it, but the lady and her family is wrong in this instance. The Officer needs an apology from this lady and her family. I certainly hope that all of this can be worked out amicably, due to the ladys age, Actually the cop could sue her personally for many things that happened during the stop. The officer does not know if the driver has a weapon, is high on pills, or drunk, the officer just knows that this person is stalling for some reason, and HIS life may be in danger. Think about it.
the jackboot should of given her a bit more time. She's old, is ill. Might have demntia. Not sure what is going on right at the very split second he ask for ID. 19 seconds isn't long. He should of shown some respect for the elderly. Sure she was going 6 over the speed limit (rolls eyes). and wasn't complying RIGHT AWAY to this jackboot. I hope when one of your mothers, grand mothers get's pulled over and pulled to the ground by her arm you defend the action of these hot headed cops. A real man would of respected her, even if she wasn't respecting him in a manner.
She had plenty of time Matt. She refused to cooperate from the word go. She failed to respect the law.
first she was 16 miles over the limit not 6 ( roll eyes) second if she does have dimenita I sure wouldn't want to share the road with her and third SHE WAS WRONG
Matt, she was driving 16 mph over the limit, not 6. You can stop rolling your eyes now.
Matt there is a possibility that your right. About as much as the possibility that I will win the lottery. She could have many things. But on that day she had STUPID in her purse, and she chose to try to use the stupid card instead of the compliance card. But because she chose poorly, she got her Ass bounced on road. As an example for her STUPIDITY, she should get a sign and wear it all the time. and it should say "I AM STUPID AND GIVEN THE CHANCE I WILL PROVE IT TO YOU, BY REFUSING TO COMPLY EVEN WHEN I KNOW I'M WRONG."
yes she refused to comply with his request.....yes he used brute force to enforce a traffic ticket.....BUT HE KNEW HER ADDRESS AND WHERE TO SEND THE CITATION.....anytime an officer of the law gets physical with anyone, there needs to be a GREAT reason....speeding is not a GREAT reason.....especially when the offender is old, ill and lives around the corner from the site of the offence.....she has lived there (i think all of her life) and a traffic citation can be mailed to the offender.....geez people.....do we believe in all honesty that a officer of the law is above the law???
The cop was not in the wrong and the old cow was. AGE does not count in this matter.
The officer did not violate the law but the 77 year old woman violated several:
Speeding
Refusal to provide her drivers license,Insurance card and vehicle registration
Refusal to obey a lawful order when requested to exit the vehicle
Resisting arrest
Being old is not a defense for violating the law
If she has dimentia then we certainly do not want her driving because she is a danger to herself and others.
The officer did not act "above the law." He was enforcing it. And not unreasonably. 4 requests for information required by every driver and 10 requests to get out of the car were not followed. And the officer is just supposed to say "never mind. You're old. Do what you want. The normal laws don't apply to you." What in the world??? She is, quite frankly, old enough to know that when you get pulled, you're required to provide ID and registration. Period.
mommo04,
Read the article, speeding is not why she was dragged from the vehicle physically. Speeding is why she was pulled over. Failure to obey a police officer is why she ended up in a physical confrontation.
how did he know her address she never showed him her ID?
how did he know her name and address she didn't give him her ID and how does he know it's her car?
So how does the officer tell that she wasnt a drug runner, it is Texas or kidnapped her grandchild, or other offence. She was not complying to his lawful order, she was not even trying to get at her licence or other paper work requested. Count off nineteen seconds... that is a long time and a lot can be done in that time. Yes you can get the address from the licence plate and send a ticket to her... but what if the car was borrowed and it was yours and the ticket came to you... what happens. Because our society ways, the police need to do things by the book and without exceptions or they could be deemed profiling and then there jobs are on the line.
seems like an awful lot of cops replying on here. most cops are just mean anyway. no compassion that u may have to urinate on yourself. who cares what ur situation is.
It is good to see a compassionate comment on here. Most of the comments here sound like they came from power crazed cops. If you are in a position where you deal with the public, you should learn how to deal with people and not escalate a situation like that. She should have handled it better and technically based on law and procedure maybe he was in the right, but he should never have handled it that way.
Even 30 years ago, and officer of the law would NEVER have drug an old woman out of a car - he'd have never heard the end of it, for one thing, from his buddies. Men were men, not knee jerk jack asses calling old women "cows" or "bitches". Our country is in the dumpster, sad day. There are two generations of young adults, and more coming up, that will simply not understand respect, nor civility, in a way that it existed in the 50s. Guess that just has to be resigned to.
So, old people are above the law? Damn, I can't wait to get old. Our country is in the dumpster because people think they're above the law. The further back in our country's history you go, you'll find that the legal system was more corrupt years ago. We all have more rights than we did 30 years ago, and that's part of the reason why we're in the mess we're in now. Everybody has an excuse for misbehaving and breaking the law.
Send the ticket????? maybe she borrowoed the car so the owner should get her ticket? If she had a bladder control problem why wasn't taking her "problem" in consideration when she left where ever she had been, go to the bathroom before leaving or wear a depends.
OMG, common sense is not so common anymore. I read the replies, and the morons who state the cop was in the wrong, wow. You need help. This woman said NO to the cop several times. SHE told him GO AHEAD and arrest her. SHE had choices. SHE made them. When you are an idiot, you get treated like one. Can you just imagine the anarchy if people could jsut ignore the police and tell them no??? Ridiculous. She broke the law. She was speeding, in violation of a posted speed limit. COMMON SENSE should dictate to EVERYONE that you don't behave this way. What the hell is wrong with those of you who stick up for this complete clueless woman? Please don't reproduce, We don't need any MORE MORONS. WOW. Thank god for this cop.
turnup truck,I agree with you.A police stops you and asks for your license you are supposed to hand it over. She's old enough to know that.they should take her license away and have her doing community service by cleaning the bathrooms at the police station and writing this officer a letter of apology.Stupid people make their own problems where non exist.
She was angry because she got pulled, so she refused to obey the officer. The infection, I'll bet was a fabrication also. He should have shot her and been done with it. Just kidding. She definitely was out of line. Had she submitted to the officer's request, she would have been on her way, and the situation would never have escalated in the manner it did. Sometimes the elderly an be a bit overbearing. Try living in Florida for a while, the eldrly there think they are privileged above others. I speak as a senior citizen, so I am not against the elderly.
i agree, i lived in florida for a year and a large amount of the elderly there are rude and angry. i too am a senior citizen.
