KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Police used a robot and a bomb-sniffing dog to search a man’s car for possible explosives after he walked into a Kansas City federal building on Friday afternoon and told authorities he was a terrorist, the Kansas City Star reported.
The suspect was in police custody, according to KSHB-TV, an NBC News affiliate.
The suspect created a disturbance inside the Fletcher Daniels State Office Building by yelling: “Why am I on the terrorist watch list?” the Star reported.
Police ordered members of the bomb and arson squad to investigate the man’s vehicle, located in the building's parking lot, KSHB-TV reported.
A bomb and arson robot opened the trunk of the vehicle and removed a green tarp and spare tire. Around 3 p.m. ET, the robot started working on opening the driver's side door. Police found a gun in the car, and the man told authorities he had fertilizer in the trunk of his vehicle, the Star reported.
Authorities evacuated the federal building, dismissed workers for the day, and closed down nearby roads, according to KSHB-TV.

"While the individual was detained and is being questioned, there is no public safety concern and we determined no personnel inside the federal building were in harm's way," said Bridget Patton, public affairs specialist for the FBI in Kansas City, in a statement.
The Richard Bolling Federal Building was also closed for the day for precautionary reasons, according to authorities. Earlier, children in the day care center at the federal building were evacuated to a preapproved off-site location.
Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary flight restriction for downtown Kansas City.

Hmmmm, Wahed Moharam, Odd story.
Wait a minute! They found no explosive device. Didn't see that name in the story, so maybe he is completely innocent. Hypothetically, let's assume that I am a weekend gardener who happened to have a bag of fertilizer in my trunk. Maybe I went to the airport to catch a flight out for a weekend for a holiday. Go to the ticket counter to check in, only to learn I have been placed on the "Do Not Fly" list. Not very unusual in these times. For six months, after returning from a couple years working in Egypt under contract to General Dynamics, I still flew often due to my field of employment. Each time, during that six months, my boarding pass would be "randomly" stamped with the "special screening", or whatever they called it. What a PAIN in the Patootie!
Back to the "alleged" suspect's point of view - assuming he IS innocent------>
So I am missing, by being placed on that list for no good reason, a weekend trip to visit a loved one I haven't seen in years. I'm gettin' kinda HOT under the collar by the time I get to their office, so maybe I yell out "Why am I on the "No Fly List" "?
Never seen a passenger, in the baggage claim area, yelling because their luggage is missing in action?
Naturally, the "Politics of Fear" that has passed for government for several generations, feeds right into their fantasy world. The scary part is that MOST of us succumb to those "coincidences" because of the excellent programming we have grown up with.
I still believe "Innocent until PROVEN guilty! Nuff said ;-)
Odd guy,too.
Contrary to the story's caption, he didn't proclaim himself a terrorist. He asked why he's on a terrorist watch list.
Come on, MSNBC reporter (or editor, since they're the ones who usually do the captions) - don't use $10 words without need. Especially if you don't understand them :D
(Sigh) This guy, also known in KC as The Helmet Man and (somebody) Sanchez,I think, has a history of being quite the attention wh--- here. I agree with the authorities for taking all the precautions that they did. He's not the most rational fellow out there.(e.g. going into a state office building, announcing that he's a terrorist and in the same breath raising Cain because he thinks he's on a terrorist watch list) But it may also turn out that all that manpower, time, and money was spent solely because this turkey hadn't had any media attention lately.
He once testified against someone involved in the first World Trade Center bombing and was reportedly placed in the Federal Protection Program after that.Yet he'll do anything to get himself on TV/in the news.Yeah,he's real worried about retaliation for his having testified. It takes all kinds of people to make this world go 'round.
According to other news stories about the same incident,he did announce that he's a terrorist,at least by his definition.

If he is not a terrorist I can see him getting upset for being on the terrorist watch list. I know the cops in my town took my picture for merely riding a bicycle down the street, put a decoy car in my walking path and dropped a bag labeled "Medical" perfectly centered on my driveway and hid a block down the street and when I ignored it had to come pick it up. I found out later according to the local paper that the local cops coined a phrase of SOB's for Scum on bicycles and put a headline in the paper saying "If you see bicycle riders in your area call the cops." I kid you not. That really peeved me off. If he is not a terrorist and was placed on a terrorist watch list, I can see why he's mad. Retired Nuclear Engineer and 14 gallon blood donor who got told by his doc to lose weight or get diabetes so I go outside and excercise riding a bicycle and walking every day pretty near for 1000 calories of activity each and every day.
ludvig
Good for you for getting the exercise.
I can see why the guy would get upset, too. The even more ironic and unfortunate thing now is, if he was not listed on a terrorist watch list before, he almost certainly will be now. He is screwed.
I know somebody who is on the watch list!
He has a common name and every male with this first and last name is on the list too.
By telling you this, am I guilty of associating with terrorists?
Radio Frankenstein,
Probably, but don't worry, they will try to make it look like an "accident". ;-)
Naw you are not guilty of associating with terrorist, but MSN might publish a story about you with a title saying you are "a self-proclaimed terrorist." There was a time in history that news agencies had hiring standards for writers and understood what libel is. I guess you are protected from being charged with libel if your defense is that you are an idiot and didn't know what you report as fact and news can be damaging to someones character.
Khalid-2395974 is correct, unless the article is leaving something out, all this guy proclaimed is that he's on a terrorist list, ludviq, what you are saying is completely plausible, the "anti-terror" industry in America is growing exponentially, these people that will turn their own mother in to authorities just to pay their own bills are all to often, as Bob Marley would say "playing smart, but not being clever"
Euro Heritage, Stop trying to destroy this conversation with your racist noise, theres plenty of dark holes on the internet where you can discuss topics like that with other racists.
Starsailing...
First, what does CEO pay have to do with PUBLIC employees negotiating with the people that they bought with their election and campaign funds making sure that they get the most favorable wages and benefits? A CEO can get terminated for not getting the results that the Board of Directors and STOCKHOLDERS expect. Have you ever seen what it takes to get rid of a BAD teacher? Want to know why our children are not the tops students anymore?
Furthermore, why do you think that any union member has the skill set to be a CEO? People like you would never understand what it takes to manage anything no less try running a major corporation. Here is the bottom line, I want my CEO to be well paid. You see those corporations really are people. The 317,000 of us working for our company expect that our CEO will do those things that ensures that we get raises, benefits AND most importantly maintain our jobs.
So equating a CEO with a public union member is a joke. This not even a political problem since those same PUBLIC UNION MEMBERS would back even a Republican if they thought that the politician would give them more. So stop the BULL it is and aways has been about the money. Even FDR knew that giving public employees the right to negotiate wages and benefits was a problem.
So now the courts decide that this is a right defined in the constitution. I ask where? Now if they have to balance the budget in Wisconsin here are the two options left, raise TAXES or terminate employees. Maybe they can tax the PRIVATE SECTOR more so the PUBLIC UNION guys get what they want. I say NO MORE TAXES you DEMOCRATS HAVE ALREADY OVER TAXED EVER BODY.
Funny how come you never hear democrats complain about taxes unless it effects their pocket book. Can we safely say that democrats don't care that a senior citizen who owns their home have to pay more so that some public employee earns more.
Can we also say that democrats don't care about NON UNION EMPLOYEES.
I certainly want to know what the democrats position is regarding non union employees. I guess money talks and the rest can go to .......
And what does THAT have to do with THIS article??!?! NOTHING... Can't we have ONE, just ONE thread without the political crap attached?
Kansas City is such a filthy, disgusting, useless place.
It is truly a wasteland of decay and violence.
