83-year-old held over hit-and-run crash that killed boy, 6

A tip from an auto body shop helped police locate and charge an 83-year-old woman with a hit-and-run crash that killed a 6-year-old boy in Illinois last weekend, NBCChicago.com reported.

Veramae C. Phillip, 83, of Woodstock, turned herself in on Thursday after authorities issued a warrant for her arrest and charged her with felony counts of leaving the scene of a fatal traffic crash and failure to report a fatal traffic crash.

She was released after paying $5,000 bail on a $50,000 bond, according to a statement from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.

The boy was struck just after 9 p.m. Saturday in Seneca Township, between Woodstock and Marengo.

The vehicle, allegedly driven by Phillip, did not stop.

Following a tip from a body shop, the sheriff’s department determined the boy was struck by a silver 2001 Chevrolet Malibu.

Alcohol or drugs are not suspected to have played a role in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s office.

There are 50 year old people who are not safe to drive there are 90 year old people who are safe to drive. The problem is identifying who is in each group.

Whty would anyone assume it was the woman's fault? Just because she's 83? Maybe the boy ran out in the street in the dark without looking & the woman never saw him. It happens with young kids all the time.

Elderly driving has been a problem since the automobile was invented. See how well our government oversight on this issue has dealt with this problem. Because government is inept about fixing anything, this will still be a problem in another 100 years, This is why we should not let them control our healthcare. Sounds like the Families of the woman and the boy may have failed as well. The old woman failed, the families failed, people are failures in general. we are declining fast as a society and since we can't come together on anything....I suspect it will only get worse.

Except drivers under 25 have the worst driving record by far. Call and ask your insurance company. Stop leaning your seat back so far you can't see, don't write stuff all over your windows, put your damn phone in the trunk and learn to read well enough to figure out traffic signs. You don't need to be tweeting YOLO to your idiot friends like one moron found out this week.

How about this: bad drivers of all ages should be taken off the road. Possibly speeding could take a back seat from law enforcement for a month, and distracted (or inept) driving could be put first. Yank their licenses and make em take the bus.

errrrrrp and those over 71 to 99 are at 25% or higher the older you get the more likely you will cause or be the cause of one... an accident that is

or make a drive through out of the local Circle K

Where were the parents of this 6yo and why was he out riding his bike so late? I know when I was 6 I was in bed at 9pm where a 6yo should be.

If the Supreme Court gets involved she will walk. Anytime in Jail for an 83 old women if it is her first offense would be considered cruel and unusual

83 year old drivers should only be allowed to drive during the day if at all. I live where there are many elderly retired people and sometimes it is shocking to see someone very old that can barely see over the steering wheel. They have the 10-2 deathgrip on it and ride their brakes. Last week I saw a man who couldn't be a day under 90 driving down the wrong side of the road on a 4 lane road with a turning lane. I got out of the way and he just carried on oblivious to what he was doing. You could see everyone on the road pick up their phones at the same time to call 911.

I live where there are lots of young drivers with their seats layed back so far THEY can hardly see over the steering wheel, crap written all over their windows, sun glasses after dark, texting and tweeting when they should be paying attention to the road.

ALL ages should be responsible behind the wheel. A "rapper" just killed himself and everyone else in his car because he just had to be tweeting yolo to some other fool. Young drivers should only be able to drive on "texting only" streets between noon and 12:15 alternate thursdays. Fair?

Texting is banned in Arizona while driving

talking on the phone is has well must be hands free in many states

                  we have enough distractions

with the advent of texting Road kill has increased dramatically

Just a few days ago a cop yanked a 77 year old woman from her car when she refused to show her ID or cooperate with the officer. Most thought the officer was a "jackbooted thug" to haul the woman from her car and arrest her.

Now, all of a sudden an 83 year old runs over someone and it's "shoot the bitch". I agree, but you can't have it both ways, timmies. AGE is no excuse in either case. If you can't obey the law you should get what the law requires no matter how old you are. Maybe if this 83 year old had been sobered up by law enforcement a couple of years ago, she might have been more responsible. But jeez, hypocrites, make up your minds.

She belongs in a nursing home and not in a car.Her spouse,children..etc,etc.should be charged with letting her endanger the lives of other,by not taking her car away.

She may have not been on drugs or alcohol, but the doctor or insurance agent should have told her spouse abouth her age slow down reaction.

Ok hit and run is very bad, and we don't even know if she
knew she hit him. The blame is on the
parents for the child’s death. 6 year
old out at 9pm? Crossing the
street? It’s up to the parents to make
sure he gets across safely. This means using the basic look and listen. I live in Hanover where Dartmouth college
is and one thing I have noticed is that a lot of people have developed a false sense
of security when it comes to the cross walk.
There is no invisible force field that will protect you from cars when
your crossing at the cross walks. I
constantly see people just walk across the road without looking. For those of you who don't already know.
When at a cross walk you stop and wait to make sure the people see you and are
going to stop. Yes people have the right
of way in the cross walk but that doesn't mean all people are going to
                          stop. Common sense.

The child and his parents were law abiding and following the rules of the road. They were crossing at a cross-walk and had the right of way. But somehow it's the victims fault, when the driver was the one who broke the law by running them down and driving away? Common sense would dictate that you hold responsible the party who violated the LAW.

How tragic. I think that every driver aged 60 and up should be tested once a year, at a minimum, in order to retain their license. Driving is a privilege, not a right. Sooner or later the age process catches up with all of us. This was preventable. She should not have been driving and what was the child doing out at 9 pm?

I witnessed an old lady plowing into a car in a crowded grocery store parking lot. She promptly backed out and went to take off. I chased her down and told her that I was going to call the police. She gave me a dirty look because she was busted.

And yes, I have kids and at age 6 they are inside in the pj's already and either already in bed or getting ready for bed. Why are their no info on this part of the story?

When has this society broadly embraced the notion that everyone is at fault for the bad things that happen aside from the person who is actually at fault?

No one seems to question WHY the parents of a 6 year old doesn't have him in bed, but instead is letting him out of the house at 9 o'clock at night. At that age, my kiddo was fast asleep before 9 p.m.

                                        B) Inexcusable adult behavior

                                        Result: Disaster

Question: Other than the usual excuse that the jail can't house an elderly person with medical issues why is it that this criminal is not in jail? I know every male under 75 would be in the can.. I know that every woman under about 60 would be in the can. I run into so many horrible "senior citizens" that it makes me wonder why they deserve respect solely due to their age. Screw them! They can earn it like everyone else.

Being of advanced age myself, 72, I feel that ALL people over the age of 65 should be road tested every year. Also, a physciatric evaluation would be appropriate. We older people do tend to diminish mentally whether we like if or not. If this woman did hit and run, then it's prison time for her and that will probably kill her. I have no sympathy for anyone of any age that will kill someone and then try to run away.

I know a ton of people that are over 65 and drive and I don't know a single hit and run driver. I think that hit and run drivers come in all ages. Road testing at an advanced age is a different topic than hit and run driving.

These kind of stories make want to vomit because the older folkes should know better but they seem not to, seeing how that could have been her grand child she killed and didn't seem to even think about it.

My mother drove up to the age of 82 because she had to work and on the expressway but she never drove at dusk or at night because her sight didn't allow her to do so and for this person to do it is so over the top I can't see the top.

May God give the family of this child the strength to go through this really tough time now and for all time as I am certain he will!!!

There are hit and run accidents by drivers of all ages. It is a terrible thing, not a chance to rally against old people.

Except people who are younger will go to prison for it, and the elderly will get off scot free. That is why its an issue and why we need to rally against old people.
