The attack that killed four Americans at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, apparently began as a spontaneous protest against an anti-Islam film before turning violent, Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Sunday.
Rice, appearing in NBC’s “Meet the Press,” said she was citing preliminary information and that the FBI was investigating the Tuesday night attack that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, and three others.
Libyan officials are holding 30 to 40 suspecting in the deadly attack of a the US embassy in Libya. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.
A wave of protests and violence has swept across the Middle East and elsewhere in the Muslim world over an obscure, amateurish movie called "Innocence of Muslims" that depicts Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a pedophile. Anti-U.S. protests in 20 countries led the Pentagon to dispatch elite Marine antiterrorism teams to Libya and Yemen and to position two Navy warships off Libya's coast.
Meanwhile, the State Department ordered all nonessential U.S. government workers and their families out of Sudan and Tunisia. In Lebanon, protesters torched an American fast-food restaurant. Even as tensions appeared to ease over the weekend, al-Qaida's most active Mideast branch was calling for further attacks on U.S. embassies.
"There's no question, as we've seen in the past with things like 'The Satanic Verses,' with the cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad, there have been such things that have sparked outrage and anger and this has been the proximate cause of what we've seen," Rice said.
“What happened in Benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in Cairo, almost a copycat of the demonstrations against our facility in Cairo, prompted by the video,” Rice said.

Protesters in Cairo had breached the walls of the U.S. Embassy and tore down the American flag.
In Benghazi, Rice told “Meet the Press” host David Gregory, “Opportunistic extremist elements came to the consulate as this was unfolding, they came with heavy weapons, which unfortunately are readily available in post-revolutionary Libya, and it escalated into a much more violent episode.”

There was “no actionable intelligence” that the attack in Benghazi was imminent, Rice said. The attack overwhelmed security in place at the consulate, she said.
Rice’s comments came a day after Libyan President Mohammed Magarief told NBC News that “foreigners” were involved in the planning and execution of the attack.
He expanded on the assertion Sunday, saying on CBS’ "Face the Nation" that about 50 people, not all Libyans, have been arrested in connection with the Benghazi attack, which he said was planned by al-Qaida-linked foreigners, some from Mali and Algeria.
Magarief said there was little doubt the assault was planned rather than a spontaneous reaction to the video, as came on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the U.S.

He said the security situation in Libya remained "difficult" for Americans, as well as for Libyans. The United States wants the FBI to investigate the consulate attack, but Magarief said it may be too soon to send in investigators.
"It may be better for them to stay away for a little while until we do what we have to do ourselves," he said.
Rice told "Meet the Press" that the U.S. is working with authorities in Libya, which has received $200 million in U.S. aid since 2011, to bring to justice those responsible for the attack.

The protesters at the Cairo embassy were chanting "Obama, Obama, we are all Osama." think that might be more revealing as to cause?

Sorry, Susan Rice (not Condi Rice) is 100% wrong. I was warned back in August about this staged event by friends in Libya. It had even been announced on the radio stations. It is difficult to believe the USA State Department does not have someone watching the TV stations and other media for day-to-day communications.

Case in point: most people agree George W. Bush was a total failure--his absence at the RNC says it all (the party made an effort to not even mention his name except for a brief video played at a time nobody was watching). How are the demonstrations spontaneous when the extremist clerics have been stirring up anger the whole week? They had signs praising 9/11, promoting destruction of the US, death to Obama, revenge for Osama Bin laden, etc. They had American Flags to burn. This was not some people waking up in the morning and reading about some video posted 6 months earlier and deciding they were angry over it and going to march on 9/11.
It is sad when Aljazeera is more honest than American politicians and media for not calling out the government on this!!!!! I am so fed up with the politically correct statements, people who keep bringing up the Crusades and burning of witches in an attempt to prove that Christians and extremist Muslims are the same. Get real. For a handful of christian nut jobs there is thousands of extremist muslims who keep persecuting and killing people in the name of Allah or Muhammad, if you could count how many were involved in the recent embassies attacks, right there you have thousands, not a handful, not the followers linked to one mosque, THOUSANDS. Even muslims know this, and the peaceful ones are affected by this in their every day lives, they know it is not how it should be.
You cannot live in peace in most muslim countries unless you are muslim, and even if you are a muslim, if you are a peaceful and tolerant one, you still can't have peace as long fundamentalist muslims rule the country. If you are a woman it is even worse.

I wish that all peaceful muslims in America (and other countries) would come post messages here (and other "western" networks), and even if the movie (or whatever else, like the burning of Qur'ans) is insulting, let people know how horrified they are by the attacks on the embassies, how much they condemn violence, how much they support freedom of speech, and how they respect all religions and all people. If people only see and hear extremists, of course they will think that most muslims are like them. Tunde – I don’t speak for the others but I can tell you that for me, it’s not disdain – it’s dislike. His policies and the direction he is taking this country are offensive to me. The kids of today and tomorrow shouldn’t be asked to fund the excesses and lack of responsibility of our generation nor the generations before us. There is also the concern that Obama has stated “the government is the one thing we all belong to.” Not true. Obama and his administration seem to have it backwards. The people do not belong to the government. The government belongs to the people.
To outline where I disagree with him most: he believes in big government, wealth redistribution– regardless of whether or not a person has worked for it, spending money we just don’t have, and policies that – in my opinion – have and will continue to impede the capitalist framework of this country. In addition, it appears that he is working very hard to undermine the Christian principles this country was built on.

She presented the calculated lie that the attacks on US embassies and interests across the middle east and northern Africa were spontaneous reactions to an obscure film and not part of a calculated and planned plot by our enemies. A plot to attack the USA on the 11th anniversary of 911. This transparent election year ploy to cover for the inept Obama administration that appointed her and our equally inept State Department headed by Hillary Clinton. This bald faced lie to the American public is an ominous sign of the direction our nation is being led and an indictment of the inherent dishonesty of the Obama administration as a whole. During a goodwill trip through Latin America, Vice President Richard Nixon's car is attacked by an angry crowd and nearly overturned while traveling through Caracas, Venezuela. The incident was the dramatic highlight of trip characterized by Latin American anger over some of America's Cold War policies.
By 1958, relations between the United States and Latin America had reached their lowest point in years. Latin Americans complained that the U.S. focus on the Cold War and anticommunism failed to address the pressing economic and political needs of many Latin American nations. In particular, they argued that their countries needed more basic economic assistance, not more arms to repel communism. They also questioned the American support of dictatorial regimes in Latin America simply because those regimes claimed to be anticommunist—for example, the U.S. awarded the Legion of Merit medal to Venezuelan dictator Marcos Perez Jimenez in 1954; Jimenez was overthrown by a military coup early in 1958.
This was the atmosphere into which Vice President Richard Nixon arrived during his goodwill trip through Latin America in April and May 1958. The trip began with some controversy, as Nixon engaged in loud and bitter debates with student groups during his travels through Peru and Uruguay. In Caracas, Venezuela, however, things took a dangerous turn. A large crowd of angry Venezuelans who shouted anti-American slogans stopped Nixon's motorcade through the capital city. They attacked the car, damaged its body and smashed the windows. Inside the vehicle, Secret Service agents covered the vice president and at least one reportedly pulled out his weapon. I feel sorry for the low level service members, contractors and locals that have to deal with that kind of impossible bureaucracy. We know that informants reported a possible attack and civil unrest, nobody listened. I bet a security contractor warned of loose security too, and nobody listened. Of course people are questioning the administrations foreign policy competence. We assisted in a political overthrow and have no real way to provide stability now that it is over. It isn't the only country we have done it too either.

It is my assertion that the initial demonstrations were in fact a spontaneous response to inflammatory depictions of Muhammad in the despicable film, but the attacks launched with RPG's and automatic weapons had in fact been planned and scheduled. There is also some speculation that the film's release was planned by the attackers to coincide with the attack plan as a cover and distraction for the attack.

It's tragic for America that the left refuses to look AT the issue, and instead wants to deflect and dissemble in order to protect Mr. Obama. Whether Mr. Obama and his national security team are found to be incompetent (I think the evidence is clear at this point Mr. Obama IS incompetent in large measure) in this particular case--the Libyan consulate attack--it must be true that a coordinated attack with RPGs and automatic rifles wasn't simply spontaneous.
Maybe the movie did spark this violence, but if so then why was the violence delayed until 9/11 if it was spontaneous? My money says that Islamists planned this attack and that they used the cover of a mob environment to launch it, and that the movie had and has nothing to do with it other than to get ignorant muslims out to protest to create that mob that provides the cover. That Ambassador Rice is willing to go on TV and make the preposterous claim an attack like this is spontaneous just spells out how much trouble we are really in. Not only don't they know what to do about this, but they are making excuses for it.
Imagine, would the American public be MORE angry over the attack if it was planned, or if it was just spontaneous mob violence? The question obviously answers itself. But the ruse goes deeper. If this WAS planned, then why was there so little security and a willingness by the American president to allow his diplomatic outposts to be at high risk? Face it, we have a pathetic president. While I have little doubt that the stories that our government was warned are true - in reality it makes little difference. The fact that this administration has been totally disengaged with national security even to the point of skipping his briefing the day after this attack so he could be at a fund-raiser tells you where his priorities are. Guns are available, but RPGs are not that easy to come by and are very expensive, average protestors don't carry RPGs on them during a random protest. Are you and Rice going to try and tell the American people that on the anniversary of 9/11 a spontaneous attack happened on an American embassy because of a movie trailer months old? Israel, and Libya have both said it was planned and that the U.S. had warnings, not to mention the fact that the British had already pulled their people out, and every American security official asked has said it looks planned. Ambassador Stevens was killed in an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
The American embassy is in the capital city, Tripoli. These are two separate diplomatic installations in two different regions of the country. Consular offices are not defended as heavily as embassies.
What do most of the commentors here actually know about security at our diplomatic installations abroad? I'd be willing to bet that 99% of you have never set foot in an American embassy or consular office overseas, and definitely not in the Middle East.
It's easy to criticize someone else's performance when you know nothing about the situation in that part of the world or the conditions on the ground.
I was attempting to demonstrate how simple it is to obtain deadly assault weapons in certain Middle Eastern countries. The same holds true for Libya where many weapons are left over from their recent civil war.
Yemen is now at the forefront in the battle against Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). Don't be surprised if you hear that name again in connection with the attack in Libya that killed Chris Stevens and 13 others (ten of whom were Libyans).

There is a consulate in Benghazi, not an embassy. These are two very different installations. Embassies are fortesses, but a consulate is essentially an office.
The Americans who work for our diplomatic corps in many countries are almost constantly under attack. Have some sympathy and respect for those people. Remember that if ignorant Americans inflame the situation further, other diplomats might pay with their lives....let President Obama and Secretary Clinton handle this as they know best.
Be eternally grateful that we have a man with a good head and strong shoulders at the helm. Be grateful that a war-monger like Romney has no decision-making role here.

Why, if the movie is the issue, and we knew about this issue for weeks, did we do nothing to either move the Ambassador to a safer location or to beef up the security of the location he was in? What's really unsettling is that anyone with a handheld camera (which is pretty much everybody these days) can make an amateur video that incites deadly riots in parts of the world. That's a little bit too easy, in my opinion.

Obama is not to blame for the deaths it is thier own fault for trusting the Libyans. The only thing I will blame Obama for is jumping on the band wagon and taking down Quaddafi and replacing him with a Libya that we have the gaul to actually trust when eastern Libya has been a hotbed for extremists for decades. The United States is too trusting and if you don't think Romney would do the same you are mistaken. Whether the attacks were well planned ahead of time or "spontaneous" is irrelevant. The US consulate in Benghazi had been notified by the Libyan Governmental three days before 9/11 that the security situation in that city was fast disintegrating and no action by the State Department ensued. Even if the threat was non specific given the date of 9/11 in that part of the world there should have been additional security arrangements at all embassies and consulates in that region. Why did it not happen? Are we short of US Marines? Depending on two security guards, even if ex Seals, and a local constabulary with no vested interest in protecting Americans, was criminally foolish. Someone is responsible for this deadly lapse and whoever is that person should be severely disciplined for this gross lack of judgement.
The host country decides if the Marines can come at all. They are essentially responsible for the guests. So that is why local police were suppose to be protecting our personnel. What I cannot accept is how naive our government has become in face of what has happened in the past. In Afghanistan and Iraq local police have turned guns on our soldiers. It isn't like this is something new. So why for heaven sakes would the US trust that local police could not be bought and paid for by those intending harm ?
We need to get out of these countries that hate us because frankly if the host country is only tolerating us due to money bribing, we really have no friend there at all. Does the population really want the US in these countries ? Ask them. If they want us us we need to leave. If we fortify those embassies even more since these attacks, it lessens the direct human contact with the population which is the only way to have lasting influence.
This is exactly what security assessments have been telling the state department since 2010. Hiring out security and depending on host countries under such unstable conditions is not safe. Interim facilities that are not up to security standards are also not safe. If the facility cannot be defended the state department should not be there. The Obama administration is inept and Rice is trying to cover it up.
Everyone else has said or will say all the political things I could say, so, to keep it short: just how dumb is our nation, to NOT have extra security already in place, prior to 9/11, after the bragging of the Obama administration and all that has been happening?
