California chef allegedly admitted slow-cooking wife's body

A California chef told police he killed and slow-cooked his wife for four days to dispose of the body. KNBC's Beverly White reports.

A Southern California chef on trial for allegedly killing his wife told police he slow-cooked her body then dumped it out as kitchen waste, according to an interview that was played in court on Tuesday.

Dawn Viens disappeared in 2009 and police identified her husband David – the chef at the former Thyme Café in Torrance, Calif. – as a prime suspect.

In 2011, investigators dug up the Thyme Café, which Dawn co-owned, searching for her body. But in a taped interview played Tuesday in court, David Viens seemed to tell police why her remains may never be found.

"I took some, some things like weights that we use and I put them on the top of her body, and I just slowly cooked it and I ended up cooking her for four days," Viens said on tape.

Documents: Read David Viens' interview with deputies

Viens claimed he argued with his wife, then bound her arms and feet and duct-taped her mouth shut. He said he panicked when he found her dead the next morning.

Viens claimed he stuffed his wife's 105-pound body in a drum and disposed of the remains as if it were kitchen waste.

"I came up with the idea of cleaning the grease traps and commingling in the, the excess, the excess protein," he could be heard saying on the tape.

David Viens told police he recovered Dawn's skull and jawbone and hid them in his mother's attic. Investigators say they never recovered any body parts.

Holy Shiite Batman!

Slow cooked his wife. Even though she actually died from asphyxiation, this sadistic bustard needs to understand "cruel and unusual" punishment is sometimes warranted. I'm sure, he'll get what's due, however, this is California and if I recall, they do but....

Yes, California has a death penalty statute and has executed thirteen inmates since the US Supreme Court decided capital punishment was (again) constitutional in 1976. Their last scheduled execution was stayed by a federal court in 2006, however, due to concerns that their current lethal injection procedures may cause conscious asphyxiation.

As a result of their de facto moratorium, California currently has 678 inmates on death row. Although the state offers the option of death in the gas chamber, no one has chosen this method

I guess he will be #679? However, even cranking out 1 a month, he'll have approx 60 years before his number comes due. Put him to the front of the line!

I wonder what spices he used? Did he use a dry rub on her body before or did he just use a marinade? Hmmmm, I bet the meat was tender though.....way to start a new food craze. Thanks!!

You people are really sick, how can a sane human being make jokes about this evil act. Maybe it is your way of dealing with the fact that man can and does commit insane evil things, but I really believe you need to come up with a better way, and no I will not lighten up.

I worked at a water and sewer facility for 20 years - pretty hard to gross me out.

Hell, religions chopped people heads off and ripped out their hearts (in public) to offer them to their gods - and I bet they didn't even fight with their wives on those special days.

Thank gawd for evolution...I just know with my smart ass mouth that I'd have been offered up.

Cameron - you forgot about the bubblers - nothing floats in a treatment plant until it has sat at the bottom for several days. We added the special bacteria to help eat up the solids...oh, and all the worms at the bottom too - special seasoning.

If there's no body, why did he confess? I read the original story and the taped confession, but nothing mentions why he confessed. Guilt? Stupidity? Police withheld meds until he confessed? If he owns a restaurant, why is he going to all the other restaurants he mentioned? If he was so tired, why did he go out bar hopping? Was he also doing "coke?" Bad, very bad reporting...

After death when the blood stops moving enzymes are released which begin the decay process. In an intact corpse the by product of this decay is gas which is what causes the bloating. The release and the initial work of these enzymes is what causes rigor mortis. Rigor begins at time of death and reaches full rigor within 24-48 hours depending on tempurature of the surrounding area, then slowly subsides. The gas by product causes bloating and even noise but will slowly release naturally from the body unless surrounded by water OR if build up is faster than the release openings in extreme hot climate cases.

By boiling the body in hot liquid he speed up the decay via heat, and simultaneously rendered out the fats and protiens which make up the body. What was left would be a sludge of muscle tissue and bone parts making them easier to move & conceal. The skull would be the hardest since it does not contain the marrow like the rest of the skeletal system and wont boil out and become as brittle.

The worst part is a body, even a dismembered one, will not easily fit in a commercial cooking pot along with the required amount of liquid to perform this....so

he would have had to use a large floor mounted commercial pot which is mounted to the floor with a dedicated water line normally used to boil/stew/cook several hundred gallons at a time and are stirred with a boat paddle type tool. They would easily conceal the body and allow room for this act.....

I am glad I never ate in his resturant.......

If you're going through the trouble to slow cook her for 4 days, why can't you at least practice some cannibalism! What a waste.

As to all you people overreacting here about him cooking her after she was dead, its only a degree of difference between this and cremation. Object, if you will, about the murder, not what occurred after she no longer had any use for her body.

for being "ingenious" enough to kill someone in a way so closely related to his chosen occupation. Most assuredly, as this chef has sold his soul to dispatch of his nagging wife by murdering her, those who find it humorous and grossly DEFEND their right to laugh at this sub-human atrocity-have also sold little pieces of themselves in their blind search for comic relief.

Oh my God, how horribe! It makes me wonder, if he could do this to his wife, what else might he have served to those who came to eat at his place? And who ties up his loved one because they have an argument with them? Surely this man was violent in his past, so who else has he harmed before, especially other relationships or among his own family members?

The only good that I can see to this awful story is that her family will at least know what happened to her and not be left wondering or looking for a body.At least he is admitting what he did as well. There won't be a long drawn out court battle trying to get him convicted either. Perhaps that may help them find some closure at last after over three years of suffering.I hope they will find peace and be able to move forward. As for this sick creature, I somehow don't think his prison buddies are going to take too much a shine to him in prison. Nor will they let him anywhere near the kitchen.Best keep him cleaning toilets.Suits his character perfectly.

They should tattoo on this guy's forehead a concise description of his crime, then send him to a high-security prison in the general population holdings, not in a private cell or death row cell. Give him plenty of play time for basketball etc. out in the yard, laundry room duty, etc., lots of interaction time with the other cons. He will last about as long in prison as Jeff Dahmer.

I shudder to think what happened to the corpse (given his profession) if they can't find the "oil barrel" in which he claims to have disposed of her body.

What did Jeffrey Dahmer say to Lorena Bobbitt?

"Were you going to eat that?"

Police found many butts behind his couch.

"nauseous" refers to the item causing you to feel "nauseated"

Betty: nauseous refers to an ill feeling in one's body, in response to some stimuli.

Betty, actually the item causing you to feel nauseous would be nauseating. Nauseated is the past tense of nauseous. For example:

                      I currently feel nauseous.

                      I felt nauseated yesterday.

                      This news story is nauseating.

The two literal senses of nauseous, “causing nausea” ( a nauseous smell ) and “affected with nausea” ( to feel nauseous ), appear in English at almost the same time in the early 17th century, and both senses are in standard use at the present time. Nauseous is more common than nauseated in the sense “affected with nausea,” despite recent objections by those who imagine the sense to be new. In the sense “causing nausea,” either literally or figuratively, nauseating has become more common than nauseous : a nauseating smell.

If we're going to get it all out there, we might as well be as accurate as possible.

Could be why California is so broke - housing all those losers for years. Somebody has to pay for that. It would be cheaper to give 'em the ole lethal injection than the provide shelter and three meals a day.

With respect, the death penalty actually costs the state MORE than life in prison. Due to all the court fees and appeals, etc.

                        Look it up--don't believe me.

Maxwell's if the person is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt (in this case he is) then there should be no appeals. He should be taken out back and a bullet to his head. Very cheap and very effective. We should take a lesson from the Chinese on this.

Maxwell is completely correct. Assuming the prisoner uses a public defender for the entire appeals process, it costs nearly double to carry out an execution than to keep them locked up for life.

Although the solution KevinH offers sounds great here in the heat of the moment as we read this particular awful story, America simply isn't willing to execute as many innocent people such a plan would produce.

Keep in mind that, to date, 297 individuals that were all found Guilty in a court of law were released when DNA analysis became available and proved they were completely innocent.

First off, the death penalty is legal in California. It's been legal for decades now.

And secondly, I am all for the strictest punishment for this sicko. However, a quick and painless death is too merciful. Let him live out his long life behind iron bars. That's a fate worse than death.

I don't know why you think we repealed it. Maybe it's because we don't use it very often. Over 700 inmates on death row. Since the reinstatement in 1976, only 13 have been executed. I know. I'm not happy about it either.

Wrong on a couple of points:

                            1. California never "got rid of" the death penalty. It's still the law to this day.

                            2. Concerning the "honor of paying for the rest of his life"....believe it or not, keeping him in prision for life is cheaper than executing him. So, money wise they save keeping him alive.

The issue is do we really want to be a society that executes the insane? I think most people would agree that what this man did (assuming he is guilty) was an act of insanity. This man needs to be psychologically evaluated and given a fair trial, no matter how frigging guilty he may appear.

                                    @Alex,

If we dont execute the Guilty like this man, then we dont give justice to the victims. Whether sane or not he needs to be taken away from everyone, and the death penalty is what should be done. If not we let killers remain alive while we pay there way through live...

Your decision to execute this man is purely emotional, and it is difficult not to. We can all feel the emotional pain of a loved one going through such sick and excruciating pain. Yet do we really want our judicial system to be based on emotion over fact. This man (or whatever you can call this being) needs to be determined sane or otherwise and given a fair trial.

Well Alex how would you decide what is right or wrong? Right is right, wrong is wrong. So if right is right and wrong is wrong what are the consequences of doing wrong when we know its wrong?

                                    Steada,

Currently most state laws have one of two ways of determining the criminally insane. One school of thought is wheater the subject knew it was wrong but could not help himself from committing the act (deemed insane). The other thought is that as long as the subject knew the act was wrong, he is deemed sane. I am unfamiliar with CA law, as they rarely execute since the Supreme Court ruling in 76' but the courts would need to evaluate based on that criteria.

But I digress. My point was that "sick-o" cases like this often get people to cry for blood due to the emotional connection. Hell if I something like this were to happen to my wife I would take things into my own hands and forget the 8th amendment. But I DO NOT want my legal system to operate on that very same emotional line of thought.

For those of you who want to throw this man to his "fellow inmates"-what do you think his "fellow inmates" are in prison for? Probably close to the same thing this man would be in prison for-murder, assault, etc. What makes this guy worse than the "fellow inmates" who might have done worse?

                                        Scooter and Ms.C,

Sadists would. Some people would love to express their rage onto said monsters by doing the same atrocious acts they are punishing against; ironically. Scooter is absolutely right, anyone performing these acts of cruelty should be placed into an institution or put to death (in a manner society agrees upon). I was under the impression our society had evolved from the ancient mentality of eye for an eye. Violence will always lead to more violence. it can only act as a deterrent for so long.

Let's look at this from a different direction -

He goes to the graybar and becomes the chef. Some big tax dollar savings are possible here, though it might cause the guards a lot of headaches at bed-count. . .

Alex1145, if the courts carried out punishment (should be the death penalty in this case) in a timely manner, maybe that would be deterrent enough. Sadly, perps know that, even if they are caught, prosecuted, and sentenced to death, they will enjoy many years, at the tax payers expense, of appeals, three squares a day, along with internet service, conjugal visits, etc.

I say, Sheriff Joe Arpaio has the right idea. Google him if you don't already know who he is. IMHO, the best law man in the nation. More law enforcement departments should follow his lead and treat the criminal as such, the criminals they are. No perks, period. They did the crime, let them do the time.

                                              #14.22 - Wed Sep 19, 2012 4:04 PM EDT

                                              Ms.C,

Arpaio is a man I would prefer not to include on this discussion. He is an Arizona Sheriff who has been repeatedly elected in his county. Also known as the toughest sheriff. When I think of this man I think of Wyatt Earp, a man from an era long past. While characters like Wyatt Earp were necessary in a period of time without laws and regulations being upheld, they are now hazardous to the current legal system.

Arpaio has repeatedly been involved in controversial incidents, one relating to this case that you are bring up is his unconstitutional jailing conditions. Cramming inmates into overcrowded cells in order to incite violence amongst themselves, denying medical treatment, providedmalnutricious food, as well as other treatments to endanger their health. This is not the man I (nor most in this country) want to base our legal system off of.

While I agree with your point that the legal system moves too slow, I do not believe murderous psychopathic lunatics consider the duration of legal due process. The monsters we are talking about are either insane or obsessed and WILL commit these depraved acts. Executing these murderers will not deter, we must rely on systems of controls throughout schools, workplaces, etc to watch for signs of these lunatics.

It is extremely depressing and draining (as well it should be) Despite your preconcieved notions Ms.C, you should see what life is like for these men before forming so strong an opinion

Better yet, lets make sure that the younger generation knows who their marrying. It seems that too many girls this day and age marry for the wrong reason and in some cases hardly know the guy, they just get married to him because he made her pregnant. We see it all the time, and I'm not saying that the reason this happened to this Woman was because she didnt think she knew her husband, I'm just stating that too many girls dont actually know their mates.

Scooter, you're absolutely right. I divorced two men, one hit me and the other was a drunk. I was only 18 when I married the first one and stayed with him for 5 years, I didn't know any better. He said he loved me until the day I left with two black eyes and a busted lip. I never looked back. The second one was mostly a verbally abusive drunk. Same with him, said he loved me till the day I left.

Women need to get out of abusive relationships right from the beginning. Luckily for me, I survived both but I definitely don't take any sh!t from any man anymore.

To any women out there in an abusive relationship: It does not get any better, he DOES NOT love you, YOU don't deserve it and you CAN survive without him!!

                                                    Scooter & Upset...ditto that.

My ex was the text book example of an abuser and controller. It took many years and a lot of courage to get out. I have done much better without him than I ever did with him. Divorced him in '93, was single for 13 yrs. Am now married to a wonderful man, who loves me just the way I am. Never tells me I am to fat, I am not worth anything, I am stupid, etc., etc., etc., ad nausem. Yeah, I'm so stupid I graduated Summa Cum Laude from college. Every time he saw my name on the Dean's list he would run me down to my son. LOL!!! He always told people I was not good with money, but when I threw him out, he was debt free; now he is in debt to the tune of $250K. I bought and paid for a home of my own in less than 4 years. I now own that home which is a rental property and is mortgage free and and my husband and I own the home we live in. Ha...(to the ex) how do you like me now!

Ladies...Please get out! I can't emphasize this enough...No reason is good enough. No matter what he says, he will never, ever change. You are putting your life in his hands. Men who only want to control you will control you to death.

I can see it now, "Yeah, I um panicked. I didn't think she was going to die. So in a panicked stated of mind, I decided to slow cook her."

Most people panic and dump a body somewhere or take it to a river and try to sink it. A four day slow cooking doesn't sound like panic to me. It sounds like a slow and methodical murder and cover up. If California still had the death penalty, I would say fry him. No pun intended...honestly.

I think what rjw meant was that he cooked her because he's a chef. People do what they know. And since the guy is obviously one sick individual, doing this sick act made sense to him. The chef, that is. Know what I mean?

That may be, but it still doesn't make sense. I'm a carpenter, but during the worst argument I ever had with my wife the thought, "Hmmm .... I should nail her to a door." never occurred to me.

Nails would pull out. #10, three inch drywalls would work, but not on a hollow door.

I'm not a carpenter but that idea of nailing my wife to a door has some merit. I think screwing her to the door would be more ironic though.

I'm just afraid it would be illegal if not immoral. Some building inspectors would insist on the door having three hinges while others would mandate a locking knob be used. Depending where you are, codes aren't uniformly enforced.

Well, my husband is a plastering contractor and if he killed me and needed to get rid of my body, I seriously doubt he'd cook me. Instead, he'd probably put me in a plastic container with a lot of lime, seal it up really tight and wrap it with extra thick plastic several times, put the container inside a wall, cover the wall with blue board and apply a nice fresh skim coat. Like rjw said, it's what you know.

Consider that he claims that he and his late wife argued, and that to shut her up, he tied her up and gagged her with duct tape, and was panicked to discover that by morning she had died, presumably from asphyxiation.

My question is, making the rather large assumption that he's being entirely truthful, how did he ever think that this wouldn't end in prison time? If she had survived the night, he'd have been in jail within the hour after freeing her.

Bearing this simple fact in mind, I'd say that either he intended to kill her and is lying now to save his own skin, or that he's intensely stupid. Possibly both.

Not necessarily. Women who are abused don't always turn her abuser in. It took me a long time to tell anyone what my ex was doing to me. More often than not, we are afraid that calling the police will only make the situation worse than it already is. It is not really rational but it is how we are conditioned to think.

Ten days later my beautiful sports car was "stolen." When it was found, it was completely trashed and couldn't be repaired. Sometimes if you tell, there is retribution. At least I didn't end up floating in a river, although I was afraid of that. I finally divorced him and that was really scary. He sure made me pay for that.

JerseyKat, in addition, sorry to hear about your car. I am very attached to my vehicles. My hubby refuses to drive my car; says he doesn't want to be the one to put a dent in my baby!

One day, after the ex had threatened my life and also threatened to have some one take my son to another country so that I would never see him again, my ex showed up at my home (we had be separated 10 months by then,) after I filed a restraining order (which I had in my hand at the time of this incident,) he kicked the door to my home in, and pushed me down. He tried to take my son. I reached around him and grabbed my son's waist band. At that point, the ex grabbed me by the throat and pushed me down on the couch. As I was being forced down, I pulled my knee up and when my shoulders had a firm purchase on the sofa, I let it fly. Needless to say, he was walking funny for a few days. He then proceeded to kick the door of my sports car, leaving a hugh dent, he pulled the coil wire off the engine so I was unable to leave (I always lock my car now, even in my own garage!) He had already broken my phone so I couldn't call the police. Thankfully, I had stopped at my brother's home after getting the restraining order, and asked his room mate to have him call me when he got home from work. When he didn't get an answer, he called my neighbor and found out I needed help. My brother and his fiancee' showed up. The ex continued, for another 1/2 hour, to put dents in the side of my mobile home. This was after 4 hours of being held captive & terrorized by him even with a restraining order in my hand. After the ex was gone, my brother went to the neighbor's and borrowed a phone. I did call the police that night. I had bruises in places I couldn't show a male officer. Those were the first bruises he left in places that were visible. He was always careful not to leave them where they would show. They are very adept at what they do. When he lost control of me or I dared stand up to him I paid dearly.

I am so thankful that my car and a few bruises were the only casualties that day. And I am thankful that your car (hopefully) was the only casualty for you. Cars we can replace, lives we can't.

mpa..Thank you. Never mind the double post, it was terrific to see it twice! I have been having trouble with this thread as well, thought it was just me.

Love that quote. I have used it often since I tossed the ex out on his backside.

It has taken many years to move on. It is difficult when someone berates you and brainwashes you into thinking that you are less than nothing. I think the best part of this situation was being able to get back into college and make the grade. I scared myself! I didn't believe that I had the smarts to do it. He made a fool out of himself by telling every one how stupid I was. Surprise, surprise, surprise (my best Gomer Pyle imitation.) LOL! I just loved making him look as stupid as he claimed I was. His aunt told me one day, "Keep on doing what you are doing. I love seeing your name on the Dean's List. You have made him and his mother look like idiots."

Also, set a terrific example for my son. He came home from school one day, he was in the 6th grade, with the first C on his report card. He told me, "Well mom, a C is average." I replied, "You're correct, a C is average, but do you really want to go through life being just average?" That was the last C he brought home, and that was before I got into college. I was given the honor of having my son at my graduation ceremony. Boy, did he hoot and holler when mom got her diploma!

Thanks again, and have a wonderful day!

He ducked taped her, but I am betting he ducked tape her NOSE as part of the mouth. Or he did something else to kill her while she was helpless. To much evidence of violence, so get rid of the evidence.

Boil her whole? What kind of restaurant has a pot or container that big that he could boil her whole? The stink would have been terrible.

All her organs boiling, plus her waste would have reeked so bad someone should have noticed the smell.

Did no one work for these people? What kind of food were they serving that covered the smell?
