Sheriff: Mother kills 2 kids, then hangs herself

A 34-year-old Florida woman apparently killed her two children in their house and then committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said Saturday.

Deputies responded to a house in unincorporated Clearwater, west of Tampa, shortly after 2 a.m. after receiving a call for help. They discovered Dawn Brown and her two children, ages 5 and 9, dead in the house.

It’s believed that Brown killed her two children and then hanged herself with an electrical cord from a bedroom ceiling fan, the sheriff’s office said.

No details were revealed on how the children were killed. Their cause of death will be released after an autopsy, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities did not give a possible motive for the killings.

Probably another single mom with two kids trying to make ends meet because the worthless POS father of the children provided little or no assistance for or with the kids. She was likely overwhelmed and just could not handle the situation. If Republicans are elected and cut benefits to all of these single parents out there, we will see more and more of this. I know many single moms and most are struggling... it is quite overwhelming for these mothers. I am not making excuses for her taking the lives of her children... that is unforgiveable. However, this is the situation many women find themselves in today. Incredibly sad...

A mother kills her children and you blame the father, I don't care how 'overwhelmed' someone is, THERE IS NO EXCUSE AND NO ONE TO BLAME BESIDES THE MURDERER! Only a MONSTER would ever harm a child let alone their own. The fact that the mother was able to do this writes a clear truth about the problems root, don't try to cloud the facts by blaming the father or a political party. THE WOMAN WAS A MURDERER.

#1.24 - Sun Sep 23, 2012 8:27 AM EDT

Absolutely correct MD-1987898. Oddly enough the "where is the father" comments pop up left and right and the blame gets shifted to men, it's the propensity for women to commit fundamental attribution error. Clearly this woman's actions suggest that she is unfit to live with. Just because a woman has the necessary biological equipment to give birth does not mean she should be a "mother," the sooner we realize this as a society the better. Require would-be mothers to attend parenting classes, in some states it's required for fathers when the mother is deemed incapable of being a functioning parent, why the discrepancy?

I am a believer in GOD, but ask yourself this. Are we worshiping him everyday or just when there is an emergency? Did this lady who killed her kids believe or not believe? You dont know the story and neither do I, but one day when we are dead and gone we will know if God exists. If he does you and your kind will burn in hell and I wont be there to see it. If he is not real then when we die nothing will happen and you will not be there to see it either. Better safe than sorry, kinda like life insurance!

God is the creator of heaven and earth, the creator of all things. He knows all. We do not. Therefore, we do not have the comprehension to understand all of the "whys" in this life. Maybe we will know in the next life and maybe not. But there are times when we do not understand everything - such as why God created evil - or at least why He allows it to continue. However, I trust that He has it all under control. And I believe the Bible that says one day all things will be created new and we will not have to deal with evil any more. Look out - here comes all the trolls who will say God and the Bible are fairy tales!! Luckily, one day you will know the truth even though you mock now.

How can you blame anyhing on a creator that you dont belive in? Isnt that called a cop out? If there is no God, then he cant create evil or hell or anything. I guess the responsibility falls back on us doesnt it? We are the jerks that created evil. In which case why are you talking to us or worried so much about what we believe? We are just the sorry butts that created evil, you shouldnt have anything to do with us at all. Stupid is also a choice that god didnt create. And btw whatsayu, I guess your god isn't responsible for the creation of diseases that kill, such as cancer or the Black Plague which killed millions before man was even capable of creating a disease, and he's not responsible for creating man capable of feeling pain when their 2 year old child suffers and dies from disease.

Again, even though he supposedly created EVERYTHING, give him credit for the good in this world and no blame for the bad. All the bad in this world is man's fault because man deserves to be treated badly and live with pain. (Obvious sarcasm.)

Angry? Nope havent been angry in a couple of days now. That appears to be your job dear one. Afterall youre the troll that started yet another religious debate on a sad news story. Youre angry at God. Its God that you dont believe in right? We are not talking about "mere mortal" sheep cloners. Thats not who you are blaming for good AND bad its God right? If you dont believe in the "perfect, divine guy with white beard" then quit blaming him for everything. If you do believe in a creator that made good AND bad then I guess thats "your" god. Go blame him, leave mine alone. BTW your the one that has the serious anger issues. Its very simple. I believe that man makes his own choices. Since you dont believe in God, you believe men make their own choices too. We are on the same page with that issue. Making choices is the only subject in this ridiculous discussion that is relevent to the story. If you dont believe in God, everything you say about him is a moot point. I doubt that you sitting around fuming like a child everyday, because some people believe in something that you havent the capability to, is going to fix the bad choices we humans are making everyday. Im done with this one. Its obvious that youre just trolling. So go ahead type 2 or 3 more responses to me. Tell me how angry I am. How you dont accept my answers. Okay, to everyone in this part of the comments, why must you turn this into a debate about whether or not God exists? What matters to me right now is that two little ones are dead and that their mother offed herself. Saying "bless those little ones" shouldn't be cause for a fight in my view. It's something people do when someone dies. Atheists, live and let live. If no fight is truly called for, don't make one of it. Believers in God, same thing. Let's all live and let live.

          #2.40 - Sun Sep 23, 2012 9:35 PM EDT

@debi-1314897 et al... Hello all! I find it very difficult to make non-believers believe and believers to not believe. Here is my two-bits... God/Creator is the creator of all things...good and evil...however, in the midst of all that there is this thing called "choice" that He afforded us (you and me), and from what I can understand the angels were afforded this option as well. Lucifer chose to be disobedient because he had that option. He (Lucifer) was a created being just like the rest of the angels in Heaven and He even ruled or was pretty high up in his possition in Heaven. We don't know how long Heaven had existed before that or when that occurred. However, once Lucifer became greedy he was cast out of Heaven, along with him went one-third of the angels that existed in heaven, voluntarily I may add because they had a choice. Before this there was no evil anywhere or at least there is no record of it. Lucifer, now Satan, became prince of this atmosphere where we now live in. Because now there is a one-third void in heaven and His other reasons, God decided to make men/woman and He made Adam and later Eve (from which you and I came). He also gave them one request with a choice which they also failed due to Satans interference in their lives, hence the punishment was death, disease, sickness and all other things that we now have to live with on this Earth while we are here. I think one of the reasons humanity was created is for the clensing or destruction of evil because angels just don't die and therefore you and I are our Creators infinite wisdom that ultimately leads to the destruction of evil. Meanwhile, this woman that killed her two children had a choice and the freedom to be a good mother just like you and I do...but she chose to do what she did...she chose evil. We all make choices and therefore we suffer the consequinces of those choices. I could write a book here but that would not be feasible. Debbie, you seem pretty smart and what you believe is your choice. However, I would encourage you to open your heart and mind to the Creator because without Him we are nothing...absolutely nothing. You can tell this when you see a dead person. When we see a loved one dead, that's when we realises how powerless we as humans are. Religions have been a disservice to our Creator for the most part. However, knowlege scripture and prophets and holy writings have been sent to us so that we may study and learn the truth about things. You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free! You seem to have been hardened in your thoughts about God/Creator. From your writings I can detect that you are an intelligent person...but know this...all the knowledge of the world does not add up to the little thumb-nail of our Creators knowledge and wisdom. I would urge you to do some research on your own for without God we are nothing. Come to the Truth and set yourself free. My heart goes out to those two children...R.I.P. I am deeply saddened by their mothers' action.

Thank you for taking the time to explain the story I was taught in catholic school and brought up to believe. Both of my great grandfathers were Greek catholic priests, so I come from a very religious background.

Believers justify innocent children suffering and dying for sins committed eons ago by supposedly someone else. Their only sin is being born. Is this the doings of a "loving god"?

Accepting god created both good and evil, why create evil in the first place? This world would be a much better place without evil. Wouldn't you prefer living in a world free of evil and pain?

Believers always bring up the issue of "choice". If evil was not created, choice would not be an issue. I think choice is just man's way of excusing our creator's imperfections.

Any creator who makes evil, pain, disease and suffering a part of life, is not a creator I would want to spend eternity with. A loving god should not be a hurting god. The billions born after the supposed original sin should not have to suffer and be saddled with someone else's sin. Should you have to suffer for something your great, great, great grandfather did?

Our universe is so vast and unknown. We cannot be the only living planet. I believe we were created, but not by the spiritual entity so many believe.

The thought of choice is very disturbing to some. But ask yourself this question, why would God create us if He required us to worship Him. True love and worship is a choice. So given that choice to love Him or not, we must be give other choices or free will as some say, for everything else in our lives. He wants us to love Him in a bad way...He even sent His son to die for us so we could be reconciled to Him in spite of our sin. So yes, the only sin for those 2 yound children was being born...born in to a sin nature. Many people will not agree that children are born this way and that is fine. But I do because you can be the most loving of parents in the world doing everything right...never spank a child or raise your voice. But how then do they learn NO or IT's MINE. It is part of who we are and it does in fact go back to Adam and Eve and further to Lucifer making his choice to go away from God. Thanks for listening.

Also...coming from a religious background doesn't make you religious or a believer. Each person has to make their own choice. Someone said ealier that religion has not done a disservice to our Creator. This is due to man's attempt to reach God. That is all religion is. A true believer (IMHO) is one who has a true relationship with God and Jesus.

That's obvious because I am neither.

My question to you Fortunes4, is why would a loving god create evil?

@Debi-1314897 I attempted to make some sense of why evil exists and how it came about...Lucifer (later Satan) was not created evil---evil originated with Lucifer/Satan and I'm assuming that is because they (Angels) were given a choice or a free will to think as they wanted/want. It is my conclusion that Almighty did not create sin per se...the created being(s) invented sin. It is true that scriptures state that God is The God of good and evil---but I think that may mean that he is in control of "all" things (good and evil) and eventualy (according to scriputres) sin will be eliminated. It is a complex thing to try and convince/explain to someone/anyone who choses to not-belive. I think it is really very simple but it is people who make it compicated because they/we chose to make it complicated. We as human beings are nothing, we just exist for a short while and then,,,then what? Okay, you believe that maybe someone else created us...why? Why did they then create us like this and what does their creating us benefit them? True, I am a believer but I am also open minded and like to think beyond what some religion and/or some book tells me, but things have to make a little bit of sense and so far in my lifetime and my experiences nothing makes more sense than the Creation. Yes, I would love to live in an environment where evil did not exist---I think maybe that is what makes me a believer because only good can overcome evil. You seem to want to blame God for evil...but in all scriptural evidence God is working toward annihilation of evil, and I think that is a part of the reason why we exist because at the Great White Throne Judgement the scriptures state that all who were ever born will stand in awe turning toward Satan/Lucifer with great wonderment and acusation's because then we will realise that all evil that befell us originated from Satan and that is when Satan, his followers and Death will be forever destroyed. After that, you and I will live in a World of no evil.

If you believe god created EVERYTHING, then you must believe he also created evil. Evil didn't just appear out of thin air.

Even if Lucifer started using evil, didn't god also create Lucifer and thus, his ability to use evil?

If god is all powerful, then he has the power to stop evil. Why doesn't he just stop it?

WOW. I would figure that people would care about what has happened to the children and the mother. Obviously the mother needed help that she didnt get. Maybe she couldnt afford it. But to turn this into a political/religious issue is stupid. Come on people have some feelings. This world is full of evil but there is no reason to bash God or Obama for it. Get a life. I pray that the children are in heaven with God now and are happy and in no more pain. As for the mother it is not my place to judge her, That is Gods call.

Debi, you seem have chosen "your reality". Can you back that up or are you just wanting to believe what you chose? Your comment #2.50 is evasive at best. You seem to "want" to blame God for evil...and not very interested in truth and the chronology of things. Either that or you are just playing with me/us. Whatever your problem is...be careful...in how far you go with some things. I think you are very near to becoming blasphemous. I don't know why you have become so hardened and/or what has happened to you to make you feel this way because you obviously "know" what you are talking about and what you are doing. In your post #2.50 you clearly make God to be worse than Lucifer. I'll pray for you. Good Luck!

Debi, I appreciate your desire to figure it out. And I think Star has done a great job trying to help. It sounds like you are searching for a deeper answer to your question about why a person like myself would choose to worship God, who has created all things to include evil. I just wanted to say that I don't have the answers, I'm human. I don't understand God's will, I just know that by faith and living the best I can to follow his will by reading his word, his plan is always been perfect in my life. The bible tells us that if we seek wisdom, just ask and it will be given to us. So Debi, if you want to know, I would suggest you pray. Not some predetermined prayer you read from a book, but open your heart and talk to God. I don't know how, but He DOES listen, it has been proved in my life over and over. And then LISTEN for him to tell you or SHOW you. And during all of that, Debi, I will pray for you also. Good Luck.

Had to resign from the debating society on this question of theodicy (look it up) many decades ago! No one can understand it~it's the endless conundrum ~ point; counterpoint which if given enough time can put one's head onto the anvil upon which one will apply the hammer liberally! Beating yourself up over something beyond human reasoning is why FAITH is the penultimate answer! It's like the question: how many angels can fit on the head of a pin? There is no answer, because only God KNOWS!

@Debi...Star has done a ridiculously good job of explaining each of your questions. If you supposedly want answers, then don't be so one sided and be open to your questions actually being answered. Don't be so combative, you obviously just want to blame God for everything. So open your mind a little, reread Stars posts, and come back when you can accept the truth ;)

                          Subject: two black swans

This is way off the topic of the destructive delusions that caused this newsish story, but... that casual platitude can't go unchallenged.

The bible, in its vast, meandering, and occasionally conflicting way of relating The Word of God, sometimes discourages those who might "seek wisdom." The prominent examples that come immediately to mind include the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil (source of Original Sin, and mankind's everlasting punitive mortal life), and the Tower of Babel (of which, God observed "They are one people and have one language, and nothing will be withholden from them which they purpose to do," so God scattered them upon the face of the Earth, and confused their languages).

Warm-and-fuzzy interpretation of the New Testament might be kinder and gentler, but the Old Testament has a few heavy prohibitions for the incautiuos few who might "seek wisdom."

Or Mom took off to another state and did not inform the dad like she was legally required to and dad finally found his children and threatened show cause on her for why she left with the kids.

These possibilities and some infinitely more complex scenarios come to mind. Since this story explains nothing, nothing can be known for sure about where dad was or if he was a victim or the one causing issues.

Making minimum wage at 2 jobs pays the bills but I don't get to see the kids much. Send them to school ,thank God they both go full day, I go to work and get home in time to fix dinner do homework put them to bed and go to work again. Can't afford childcare and the programs have been cut anyway. They tell me I make to much money. I sleep on the bus and get home in time to send them off to school so I can get to my other job. I only wish I had a ceiling fan as well built as hers. Mine would just pull out of the ceiling and make a mess.

Maybe your just too nice to do it like others do or maybe you haven't figured out how to "beat the system". My child's mother spent a 3 week long vacations in Denmark(without child) and the same length out of state. I've seen her work for 2 years now at 0-10 hours a week and yet have lots of money for rent, Starbucks, rock climbing, river rafting, iphones, ipads, you name it she gets all the toys while she doesn't give him much because she "doesn't want him to be spoiled". She uses extra ss#s on her taxes (in court paperwork she claimed her brother who lived 600 miles away), the IRS apparently doesn't care , she gets earned income credit, food stamps, God knows what else. When I paid over $764 a month she spent that money on vacationing, a bed for herself (while he had no bed at her place), a gym membership, a new cell phone every other month, girls nights out etc, all while dressing her child in rags she couldn't be bother to clean (frequent dried urine) and all while electing to work a day here and there when full time was available. Ironically all done while I pay 100% of daycare to afford her the opportunity to work.

That's my education on the subject....

Authorities did not give a possible motive for the killings.

                            Depression??

who knows , so sad for the kids though . I will never understand why they want to take the kids with , I've seen similar things many times over and just don't get it , why the kids ? Sure you want to check out go ahead , I won't try to stop you , personally I think it should be your right to check out if you want but ONLY you , not your kids , neighbors , or anyone else just you .

They take the kids with them, because they see the world as so screwed up, that there isn't anything there to help or protect the kids. In their views, the kids are safer dead (and going to heaven) than going into some foster home or back to their (apparently uncaring or dangerous) father, either place where they may be abused, and she would be able to do nothing to save or protect them. The mother may even believe that she will burn in hell for killing them, but at least the kids are safe from hell on earth.

(This information is from interviews from mothers who have been pulled back from death when they were trying to join their children.)

How very, very sad -- so tragic. I am sure that there are some grieving relatives wondering why. Prayers for repose of soul for the children and even for the mother. (No one in their right mind does something like this.) Prayers for those grieving.

Perhaps the extended family should have been less selfish and stepped in to help before it came to this.

And perhaps the extended family had NO IDEA she was having problems.... could be the extended family lives in Tim Buk Too and never saw her! Some people keep problems very close to the vest and do not share. And some people share their problems with others and others do not care. There is not enough in this article to really give us any idea what this mother's situation was.

There is nothing in this article that gives us any information about this lady and her family...how do you know the extended family, if there is one, is selfish? My goodness, what is wrong with you, stop judging, we just don't know anything.

Lord, we know the babies are not responsible for anything so we take comfort in knowing that they are safely in your loving arms. As for the mother Lord, only You know so only You can judge; we can't and should not judge because none of us is perfect...and You created us all with different thresholds of tolerance...who knows what this lady was enduring. They are all in Your hands now, Lord.

I am in no way in agreement about the taking of life of the babies but perhaps in her desparate mind she considered what might happen to them if placed in care if she left them. Here I go speculating too; Who knows, we don't know. Lets just have some compassion on the whole situatuion and not jump to conclusions based on this minute information.

Eh, my brother in FL holds his breath every time a nut story comes out, saying "Please don't be Florida" several times.
But the domestic violence involving the deaths of a whole family seem to be all too common everywhere, and of course so tragic. RIP little ones.

Meg,i agree with you,but the thing is we all have some kind of bad story in our lives and nobody dont see that until its to late.We would be going around worried about everyone around us and watching everyone's actions, making us paranoid. The thing is the people who go on rampages or self destruct are normally good people in society, and we just aint going to know until it happens. The best we can do is stop anyone from doing it if we have the opportunity, and hope it dont happen to one of us or someone we know.

If anyone else is having difficulty in their lives, I strongly urge you to move somewhere else. You can't change your genetics, but you CAN change your environment. My life changed when I moved.

Geez look at the statistic around the country before you generalize about one particular state. Mental illness, poverty, abusive spouses, drug and alcohol addiction etc. etc.. happen everywhere. As usual a story with little to no facts and information about anything. Nothing here to know for sure. To bad that so many have to speculate the worst possible things. What's up with that anyway??? So jaded, dissatisfied with your own life, miserable, hateful, mentally ill yourselves or what????

These people all have their reasons - however sad or sick they might be. There are normally signs of problems that people aren't aware of. On the other hand, when people like Josh Powell are known to be beyond weird and of questionable character, they some how get beyond the authorities. Who pays? The innocent children who never get a chance at life.

What a horrible selfish thing to do. If that woman wanted to kill herself so bad, that's just fine with me, but those kids had an entire lifetime stolen from them. Too bad she didn't just leave the kids with a family member or babysitter and just go out and off herself somewhere else.

Selfish? Some people don't have the resources to combat the pressures we are facing in todays world. I am not a parent much less a single parent. I had good parents who made sure I was educated and independent. I happen to have a strong religious faith but, I also have a comfortable income, reliable investments and a faithful husband who was also successful. I have NO concept of the desolation required to committ suicide much less take two children along.... I have great compassion for this woman and greatly wish that others would too. It has to be a terrible situation for someone to decide murder and suicide are the solution to what might be solved with just a bit of support/help. I refuse to judge her. There is indeed nothing worse than being that alone. I do not believe that "looking out for your fellow man" will leave us "paranoid" as another poster put it. A bit of concern can go along way....We do not live in this world alone. It is not a crime to help another person.

yeah there is. luscha cannot prove her cult god is real anymore than any other cult can prove its god is real. and, believers like luscha will yap about "free will" rubbish, and the next day, she and the others will all pray and hand-mumble as if this cult god is listening, taking notes, and may choose to intervene --- in spite of the Free Will garbage she just blathered about.

Perhaps the economy made it impossible for her to provide for them any more and she just lost it? This is sad for all of them. I wish she had reached out for help but sometimes when you reach out for help it is not there for someone not used to playing the system. What is sad is that so many are using the system as a way of living and that is pushing out those that really do need help so that when they ask for help-they are denied. Sad.

There has been way too many of these stories this year.

Sad part is, they will continue as long as the people do not see any chance of hope in their future. Why they think they have to take the kids with them is way beyond me.

                                            Makes no sense at all.

Perhaps they think that they might be abused by someone else and they think they are in someway protecting them from a harsh life.

In some Asian cultures, it was explained to us in the Cali news once, the mother who is going to commit suicide feels it would be heartless to leave a motherless child. Probably because they have no social safety nets in those countries?
No excuse, but a different mindset, and a person going to commit suicide is not rational.

This woman was obviously struggling. Now her family, friends and neighbors are all going to say, "if I had known things were so bad I would have..."

You never know how hard a time someone is having in their everyday life. Do you know a single mom with young children? Do you know a mother going through a divorce? Does your neighbor look stressed and always seems to be the only one taking care of her children? Why not offer to babysit, invite her over for lunch or even (if you can afford it) anonymously leave a gas gift card or other helpful item in her mailbox. You never know what small act of kindness might give someone struggling the hope to get through one more day. You may never know the difference you have made.

I agree. Those kinds of little kindnesses can help a person feel appreciated and cared for and less alone in this world. That may have made the difference with this person. I wish we all could practice these acts of kindness whenever we see a need. Make a difference and possibly save a life.

I just think a wave of depression is sweeping across our country like an epidemic. We wil never know what exactly casued this mother to give up but these cases are becoming more and more frequent.

We start out in life with a belief that life will be grand. That we will accomplish great things, fall in love and live happily ever after. Then reality starts to set in and we accept the fact that we may have to lower the expectations of our life's goals.

The media, entertainment industry, and politics of this nation are starting to take effect and seep into the pores of every one. It is time to step back back.. take a breath and be thankful for what we have. To find happiness in helping others and to find hope by giving to support and hope to those that have it not.

It would certainly be a HUGE help if the right-wing in this nation would stop hating on so many people who don't think or worship the same way they do...

Heaven forbid she could get some Mental Health assistance or help from anywhere. This is the same with our Soldiers. Support the Troops but F em once they come home as shown by the defeat by the Repubs. on the Veterans Jobs Bill. It's all the same, suck it up or fall through the cracks. RIP to the innocent children and anyone else who could have used some help before they got this desperate.

Mike, you just have absolutely NO basis for this theory. It could just as easily be post-partum (might have been a third child at a sitters), alcoholism, meth, abandonment by husband/boyf/father of the kids, a medical diagnosis that was bad, severe depression (been there), economics, eviction, loss of job, PTSD and past trauma... in short, we know NOTHING from this article – it was more of an announcement than reporting.

I wonder why hanging - Hanging doesn't seem like the choice of suicide by women - I could be wrong - I guess I will see what stats are available. Regardless, what a tragedy. However, I wonder if the report provides just enough information in case they suspect murder and they want the perpetrator to think he/she is in the clear

With much LOVE she committed her kids can go to heaven as she destined herself to hell. The little ones may have ended up in someones foster home being effed by people and society the same way she probably suffered her life.

May the good Lord have mercy on all of their souls and spare these 3 members of the 47% from vexing the privilege of Mitt Ryan and their Ann Rand's spirits.

Or, they could have been adopted in loving homes. Regardless, they're certainly not better off dead.

She is not talking about Lord obama that you worship so get a grip. Someone makes a comment about peace ans serenity and you have to jump in with you closed minded remarks.

Tell ya what. Why not make the comments about Allah or the Prophet Muhammad. The you will get a bounty on your head and obama wil send a letter of apology to your killers.

I dont understand why woman or anyone for that matter would kill a child or any kids, little lone there own.I would think if i ever flipped out or dropped a few screw from my head that they would take it out on there spouse, that normally hate each other over time,or a boss that we all no we have or at the very least,go and rob banks and try to go out in a blaze of glory or maybe you get away with some and live it up for awhile. Its still a win, win.
