Subscribe to RSSSAN DIEGO -- A man allegedly threw sulfuric acid on a woman who was walking into a Golden Hill laundromat just before 6 a.m. Saturday, police confirmed.
The assault happened at 1015 25th St. The suspect fled the scene by car.
The woman was taken to a hospital and treated for second-degree burns on her face, arms and back. Officials said the victim was injured pretty badly.

She described the suspect's vehicle to police as an older model, dark blue BMW. She told police she did not know the suspect.
About 20 minutes later, police arrested a 55-year-old man in a dark blue BMW who was causing a disturbance nearby at a Shell Gas Station at 2484 F Street.
The woman positively identified the man at the gas station as the same man who threw the caustic chemicals at her in front of the laundromat. Police said the suspect’s name is Arturo Jose Reyes.

Hazardous Materials officials later identified the chemical substance thrown at the victim as sulfuric acid, police said. Hazmat crews decontaminated the scene at 25th Street following the attack.
Reyes was taken into custody and booked into San Diego Central Jail. He's being charged with assault with a caustic chemical and aggravated mayhem.

According to police, when a person is guilty of aggravated mayhem he or she intentionally causes permanent disability or disfigurement of another person, manifesting extreme indifference to the physical or psychological well-being of another person.
Reyes could face life in prison with the possibility of parole if he’s found guilty.
Police said the motive for the assault is under investigation.
The name of the victim was not immediately released.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if sulfuric acid makes contact with the skin or eyes it can lead to severe redness, pain, blisters and serious, deep skin burns. If the chemical is inhaled or ingested upon contact, it can also cause shortness of breath, shock or collapse.

Today, out-of control crime rates have been added to the list of woes that has destroyed jobs and business in California. Without a printing press or a federal bailout, California will default. Moody has rated California bonds nearly junk bonds.
For the past two decades, California has been living beyond its means and in denial of its inability to repay the loans. Eshewing the conduct of the San Diego criminal, no one needs to throw acid on California's face -- it is already as ugly as can be. Only the Californians refuse to face the mirror.

I don't want to hear any more stories about acid thrown in faces in America. I grew up without that going on, and we don't need this to become some violent new fad. I know we can count on NBC to never tell us the status of this Mexican (frankly, I'm shocked they even told us his name), but it did happen in a state full of sanctuary cities, with legislation being pushed to make California an entire sanctuary state (legislation ironically called the TRUST Act). AB 130 and AB 131 allow undocumented students to apply for fee waivers at community colleges, and institutional aid from larger colleges and universities. AB 540 allows illegal immigrants to attend public colleges and pay in state tuition fees. Already, 1 in 5 drivers in the state of California has no license. The state has had illegals wreck into eachother and neither driver had a license. Families have been murdered by illegal aliens, some who had prior felony convictions. At over 2.5 million, California has the highest number of illegal immigrants, more than twice as many as the 2nd runner up state - Texas. So my money is on illegal, and he's already repaying the state for it's stupidly kind and generous policies towards his people.

Sadly, some people would use sulfuric acid (or other household chemicals, such as chlorine bleach or drain cleaners) as weapons, since they cannot obtain guns. Anyone can waltz into a supermarket, discount store, or hardware/home improvement store and buy such chemicals, while buying a gun requires a background check and other criteria. Most people buying such chemicals (some drain cleaners contain sulfuric acid) will use them for their intended purpose, such as cleaning clogged drains or removing stains from white clothes, but some will use them to cause physical harm to others. I have heard of some cases where people would fill small squirt guns with bleach or drain cleaner to fight off muggers, by squirting them in the eyes. There have been cases where, for example, subway riders in NYC would squirt acid in the eyes of muggers. You could find squirt guns or small, pocket size Super Soakers in any toy aisle. I certainly hope it never gets to the point where you have to show multiple forms of identification just to buy Clorox or Drano, but some criminals (or crime victims) could get desperate.
I guess I just think different from alot of people. Jails and Prisions have got to be a place in the United States that alot of people around the world don't mind living in. First thing I'd change if I could. You should work your sorry asre off in prision. I don't even think Prision lfe in the US is in the poverty range. I have no idea what chemistry class you took, but a strong acid can definitely be a caustic substance. In fact, when one talks about caustic substances they more likely are talking about strong acids.

As for the name "Reyes" being a direct certification of ones ethnicity, it is not. I worked as a receptionist when I was in my 20's, for a pediatrician whose last name was "Reyes". Her and her husband were from the Philippines, not Mexico.

Granted "pretty badly" depends on your perspective, but the journalist mentioned she sustained second degree burns to which you, or Yank should have realized what they were referring to regarding her injuries. Reading comprehension usually helps, and I don't think nit picking over that single line was even necessary..
I think the reporter is quoting some official. Don't blame the reporter for the way the official phrased the comment. She should have said: One official stated "the victim was injured pretty badly." However, English lessons are not the main point here so why get petty about the article? The main point is that a woman was disfigured (probably) by this moron throwing acid in her face. My sympathy goes out to her and I hope she recovers without a lot of damage. I don't know where most of the damage took place, i.e., the face, the back. I feel so bad for her. She goes to do her laundry and runs into a nut job like him. It will be interesting to see if this guy is another illegal immigrant going by his name.
