A Harvard-educated biology professor was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Monday after being convicted of shooting colleagues at a faculty meeting, killing three and wounding three others.
The jury deliberated for about 20 minutes before convicting Amy Bishop in the Feb. 2010 shooting rampage at the University of Alabama in Hunstville.
Bishop, who arrived in court with her feet shackled and wearing a red prison uniform showed no reaction as the verdict was read, The Associated Press reported.
"She is shattered beyond belief," attorney Roy Miller said. Miller said that Bishop has often expressed great remorse to the victims and their families.
Colleagues believed Bishop, who allegedly pulled the gun from her purse to start shooting, was angry that the school had denied her tenure.
Bishop killed her boss, biology department chairman Gopi Padila, plus professors Maria Ragland Davis and Adriel Johnson. Professors Joseph Leahy, staff aide Stephanie Monticciolo and assistant professor Luis Cruz-Vera were shot and wounded.
On Sept. 11, Bishop pleaded guilty to killing three people and wounding three others. By doing so, she avoided a possible death sentence with the plea and instead faces life imprisonment.
A trial was still required under Alabama law.
After her arrest in Alabama, authorities in Braintree, Mass., charged Bishop with the 1986 shooting death of her teenage brother.
That death initially had been ruled accidental based on the testimony of the family.
Authorities in Massachusetts are awaiting the outcome of the Alabama trial before deciding how to proceed in their case against Bishop.

It is a great sign of how much Romney is failing. The trolls are everywhere trying to relate anything bad on Obama. They are trying to deflect attention from Romney's false tax return. Romney's toast and most likely the GOP brand is dead.

Harry Reid said it, but it was a lie and now he has to back down by saying Romney paid too much and didn't take the tax break for charitable donations. Whatever happend to swift justice? Guess we need more time for lawyers and shrinks to inflate their fees.
She should not get out of the possibility of facing the death penalty. She should be put in front of a jury who would decide whether she get life w/o possibility of parole OR death. Pleading guilty should not get her off the hook for death as punishment.

You take the story of the crime committed, and the recent legal developments, and in no time at all it becomes a political argument in the comments. Lots of opinion and supposition, but little in the way of actual evidence and facts, and almost no mention of the article at all.
A small consolation for those lamenting the lack of capital punishment for Amy Bishop in regards to this case: the prison food must be of POOR quality in Alabama's penal institutions. The former professor appears to have lost a lot of weight since her arrest which is readily apparent in her most recent photos.
One time a co-worker of mine had been driven nearly insane by the under-handed, sneaky, cowardly, passive-aggressive tactics of our boss. She actually went out on medical leave over it. She was on the verge of hospitalization in a psychiatric facility - all because she ALLOWED our psychotic boss to get inside her head.
I couldn't stand it anymore. I called her up, and I asked her if I could come over. "I'm not very good with people right now, 'Liza'," she sobbed, "I'm not very good company right now."
"Oh, that's OK, sweetie!", I said cheerfully, "You can just sit there and listen to me rattle on for awhile, and it'll take your mind off things. M'kay?" She agreed to let me come over one afternoon.
When I got there, she answered the door in her bathrobe. At 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Her hair was a greasy mess and her eyes were swollen from crying. She looked as devastated as she OBVIOUSLY felt.
I settled into a chair in her den, and got right down to it:
"Now you listen to me. It's just a JOB, you understand me? It's Only. A. Job. It's not a measure of your worth as a person, as a woman, hell..... it's not really even a measure of your worth, as a professional! Did you know that?!? It's not! It's just a job."
I looked at her. She was listening intently. I continued, "Was this your first job, girl?" She shook her head no, it wasn't. "Nor will it be your last."
I stood up.
"We can't make people appreciate us, and we can't make people like us. And sometimes when they don't appreciate OR like us, they hate us, instead. It's nothing we did, or didn't do. It's just the way things are - not everybody is going to appreciate OR LIKE YOU."
I picked up my purse and keys to leave. At the door I hugged her, and said, "Remember. It's just a job. That's all it ever was, and that's all it will ever be. When a job doesn't suit you - and this one doesn't suit you, girl! - find one that does. There will always, ALWAYS, be another job."
In three weeks she had run out of medical leave, but she didn't come back.
She resigned.
And guess what - she found another job. Another job, a different boss; and, her NEW boss was a woman who thought she hung the moon, and she began to heal.
My co-worker was going to kill herself.
Over a stupid damn JOB.
Can you believe that?!? She had been driven to the brink of self-destruction, all because one man could drive her there.
And now she's got a great life.
All because she remembered something that she'd forgotten, and we've all done it, at one time or another:
It's Just A Job.

All you American idiots are bothered about is where she originates from. This has absolutely no relevance to this story, any person could have commited this crime no matter who they are, where they are from etc etc.
