LOS ANGELES -- Four Los Angeles-area high school students have been arrested in an investigation into complaints that varsity soccer players sexually abused younger team members in hazing rituals that victims said were conducted with the complicity of a coach.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department opened an investigation at the request of the school district after a parent of one boy who claimed to have been harassed by teammates came forward to lodge a complaint, school officials said.
In a statement on the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District's website, its superintendent Barbara Nakaoka said she shared people's "shock and sadness."
"Our school community faces the tragic allegation that student-to-student hazing was taking place between members of a sports team at La Puente High School. The allegations are deeply concerning, and they have understandably caused tremendous anxiety and anger among students and parents," she said.
Comparisons to Penn State 'unfounded'
Nakaoka said the media had been "aggressively covering the story" amid comparisons with events at Penn State, where assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky abused boys both on and off campus. In June, Sandusky was convicted of 45 offenses.
"I cannot allow this comparison to go unchallenged; if I were to let these unfounded comments go unchecked, then I would be indirectly telling students that their voices are not heard," she said.
A statement issued on Monday by the sheriff's department special victims bureau said more than 70 students at La Puente High School have been interviewed about allegations of hazing, and that four were arrested and released to the custody of their parents.
"The hazing incidents have gone on for several years and may have risen to the level of a crime," sheriff's Sergeant Al Fraijo said.
"At this point, there is no information to indicate that any member of faculty or coaching staff were directly involved," he added.
Sandusky victim sues Penn State for 'shameful' handling of complaints
But a lawyer representing the families of four boys who claim they were victimized said the hazing and assaults were carried out by team members against younger fellow players "at the behest and encouragement" of a coach.
The attorney, Brian Claypool, said the coach "lured young boys to a back room to facilitate varsity members of the team sexually assaulting the boys by attempting to sodomize them with a foreign object."
The attorney representing the four alleged hazing victims has now hired a clinical psychologist to help them cope with what they say is sexual assault, NBCLosAngeles.com reported.
"This is not hazing, this is a sexual assault. These boys when I saw them were in serious trauma. I did a suicide assessment on one of them," psychologist Michelle Golland said according to NBCLosAngeles.com, adding that the alleged victims were going through something akin to post-traumatic stress disorder.
"PTSD untreated will go into serious anxiety, serious depression. All of the families involved, they all need therapy as well, because they are in this vortex of trauma," Golland said.
One of the alleged victims, named as "John," told the Dr. Drew Show on cable channel HLN that six or seven people had thrown him to the floor and were "beating on me" in one incident.

The Los Angeles Times and other media reported on Tuesday that a coach, who has not been identified, has been placed on administrative leave.
Claypool also said the hazing occurred next to a coach's office, and that "the school knew or should have known that these horrific acts were being carried out on school grounds."

He accused school officials of "attempting to cover up the ongoing hazing incidents," and said he planned to file suit against the high school and the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District.

What is with these sports people. How can anyone want to have their child take any sports?
If these guys sexually assaulted the boys as they came on the team, did someone do the same to them?
How far back does this go? This is another sick story about sports. It's getting to be a flip of the coin to send your kids anymore.
insert how soccer is gay joke here
It had to start somewhere, so it could have started with them.
not...I would assume you see gay jokes in everything you read...try to lay off the bigotry for a day or so...it might be good for you..
I know back in the early 1970's that Varsity Club would do stupid stuff to you when you earned a Letter - like smear Crisco in your hair - but I don't recall anyone going after your personal junk...that definitely goes into Sandusky territory.
That sports physical was bad enough...turn your head and cough...lol.
I was in high school from 1969-1973. I played baseball, football, and basketball. I was also a member of the FFA.
I do not recall having to be hazed in any manner for any of the sports or the FFA. We all just had fun, played our hardest, and enjoyed our experiences. We were banded together by our friendship and performed well as a team.
Someone please enlighten me as to why you have to torture or humiliate a fellow student before they can play on the team or join the group? Explain exactly what the advantage to that is. Perhaps we could have done better if we chose to haze people?
Yeah, it's this whole "jackass" evolution of comedy that happened which I don't really get.
I remember when Jackass and Tom Green came out in the 90's and suddenly it became funny to smack each other's balls. Was never my idea of a good time but I seem to be in the minority with that opinion growing up. I usually prefer clever comedy over the "look at me, I'm being outrageous!" comedy but I think this is where it leads. When just being outrageous is comedy I guess this is where it ends up eventually because you want to one up the last joke. I'll never get this. Maybe it's a symptom of being a country that's falling behind in education.
What the hell is fascinating about shoving things up your butts? First, students in college pouring drinks up their butts, now High School athletes trying to shove objects in other kids. What the hell is wrong with you people?
I heard of some people not being able to "take" a joke, but this is ridiculous.
I always thought they meant figuratively.
i never liked sports........and now i have a legitimate reason if people ask why
steven100, We, as a nation, need to root out all hazing, and criminalize it. Crime should be prosecuted EXACTLY the same for athletes as for anyone else! Selective prosecution by an elected prosecutor should, upon conviction, be cause for disbarment!
First it's college-age students and now it's high school students. It's becoming more evident dangerous hazing rituals are happening around the country. Parents and school officials are getting fed up. Just like in any organization, when there is an abundance of abuse or wrong-doing, rules will change to affect everyone. More red tape will be created and those who were abiding by the rules and ethical laws from the beginning will find it difficult to continue doing what was once considered fun and enjoyable. Now it will become a chore and a headache.
This article is extremely light on details. I expect much of it is exaggerated or vague so that you'll fill in the details with your imagination...and you'll think of a worst case scenario. I'd be very surprised if the attempt to sodomize the students were real. Because they were only "attempts" and did not actually do it. The "beating on me" thing doesn't make sense either. I expect this was very light beating, or something akin to two-for-flinching style beating. This article is typical news media hyberbole.
Dude, jocks are a-holes. We all know they grow up and beat on women. This story doesn't suprise me in any way really...
Ban High-School + College Sports, PERIOD.
Another example of homosexual antics in sports!
Sexually assaulting a member of the same sex is homosexual in nature.
Guess the Boy Scouts are doing the right thing keeping the Homosexuals out.
Male students forcing an inanimate object into another male student is definitely abuse, but what does it have to do with sex??
Apache Indian said:
Mr. Indian: please consider getting some therapy. why do you feel you need to justify your likes and dislikes in order to satisfy someone else? especially over something as unimportant as sports. and also, how is this is a "legitimate" reason to eschew all sports? seems foolish to me. its like saying because there are sexual assaults that occur, having sex is a bad thing generally. any activity will be subject to a few bad apples. i used no capital letters here, to avoid intimidating you.
This story is so light on information that all we know for sure is a bunch of lawyers and psychologists are going to make a lot of money!
@Kent McMillen
"steven100, We, as a nation, need to root out all hazing, and criminalize it." Sure, while you're at it, why don"t you give us your whole list of all the things you think we should criminalize. I'm sure it's quite extensive!
@Newswinner101
"Ban High-School + College Sports, PERIOD." The first part of your comment is too stupid to respond to. As far as banning all sports, good luck with that, Newswhiner!
Wow, I have seen a few posts now that seem to indicate the media may be "jucing" up this story. Maybe trying to make it sound worse than it is? I thought that to. Then I went to my video search and typed "highschool hazing". My god, what is happening to our country. The sheer volume of results alone turned my stomach. I imagine they would have to leave details out, because this is an active investigation and because it envolves several minors. Come on people, check your facts before you comment!
School sports are not the problem. In my highschool (long ago lol) it was the popular kids tormenting the unpopular kids. It all stems from bullying! It don't matter if it's the football team, the band, or the JROTC ect!
What I want to know is how all of these macho jocks think that what they are doing doesn't make them all look super gay?
You want to sodomize someone then come out of the closet already!
This is so much bull@!$%#. No one put anything inside of these guys. The article says "attempted to", I say this sounds like a mock sodomization. We did the same to new employees (all male) at a company I worked at as a teen but with clothes on. It was a mack gang rape.
Everyone laughed it off, we were all straight, and no called their layer or news organizations.
Hazing will never stop, it is practiced all over the world in many aspects of life from the Boy Scouts, to militaries, to sports teams to companies, to new neighborhoods for kids, for fraternities, for dozens of more things. I was hazed several times in my life, it's really no big deal.
Try to stop it, you can't. It's a rite of passage.
Its time to take sports out of the school system and get back to teaching the basics.
While we're at it, lets set the speed limit at 5 mph everywhere. That will drastically reduce highway deaths.
You seem to be on the right track but 5mph is a little extreme. If schools concentrated more on teaching the basic instead of making the main focus sports we will all be in better shape.
I do not condone the commercialization of school sports, but having a healthy body to house a healthy mind is basic to learning. Children who sit in the seats all day do not learn as fast or as well as those who exercise.
I agree with you, but your argument is flawed. Sports activities take place after schools so your arument will not get the students out odftheir chairs, Now if you are talking a gym class then I agree. With that being said, why arent the parents taking care of their kids and making sure they get the execise they need. ???? answer me that Mr Bill.
Physical training IS a basic. This sort of social abuse has nothing to do with athletics.
So keep it in gym class and get rid of sports, Simple isnt it.
Perhaps our positions are closer than I originally thought. When I was in school, sports were part of physical education, and gym time was mostly restricted to bad weather days, except during basketball season. However, I believe that organized intramural sports, both during and after school, are important. They teach the teamwork and competitiveness that are important life skills, despite recent attempts by educators to pervert equal opportunity into equal outcome.
You mean handing out free morning after pills since free condoms didn't work
When I was in high school the cheerleaders wore no panties and would sit in the lap of a high school jock on the bus on the way to the game and have sex. It was "required" of them as the jocks thought they owned them. There are all kinds of things that happen in high school that nobody knows about. Ask your teen. Or the high school band memeber who was my so called best friend was caught twice in the nude taking on the opposing team under the bleachers. Shocked? Not me.......
I agree that sports should not be the number one focus of a school, but I do not agree that means we should just get rid of sports altogether. Unfortunately not in this case, but being a member of a sports team can teach a lot of things (teamwork, dedication, the value of hard work, etc) that aren't necessarily learned by just sitting in a classroom. There are thousands of schools and teams across the country, and we don't hear thousands of stories about abuse each year, so clearly this isn't happening in the majority of teams.
This type of thing could honestly happen within any organization, not just sports. Do we ban all extracurricular activities? No, we just have better screening for the adults in charge of said activities and better monitoring so that hazing isn't allowed to continue year after year unchecked, snowballing to more and more severe/inappropriate activities. The real problem is the turning a blind eye to any reports of hazing-this needs to stop and any reported incident needs to be thoroughly investigated-not swept under the rug.
Sure, Rick because back in the day when education was good (I'll let you pick the era), the lack of organized sports in school contributed to a better education. I think you will have a hard time finding an era in the last century when school sports did not play a role in public education.
From the usnews.com site, "More than 7.6 million students played sports during the 2010-2011 school year, an increase of nearly 40,000 students compared to 2009-2010. The organization estimates that 55.5 percent of all high school students play a sport.". For a number of those kids playing high school sports, their skills will be their ticket to college, when they otherwise wouldn't have the means to do so. Should we deny them that opportunity? This story also suggests that school athletes have better grades and are less likely to drop out, which would suggest that we should encourage more students to participate in sports if we want them to do better in school. So for four bad kids on soccer team, and a few others reported from time to time, we should tell 55.5% of our school students their sporting career is over?

I'm all for taking sports out of Public schools - and I love sports. How much did the School District in Texas just spend on a football stadium? Time to pay your own way jocks - my taxes should not go toward your (ill fated) dreams of being a Pro some day...let daddy pay for his/your dreams.
John in NW Pa; if you take every school in the nation - it averages out to be one person from each school actually makes to the level of professional athlete - that is for the entire history of that school. You want a scholarship - there are thousands you can apply for, none of which involve sports. If you are only doing well in school so you can be eligible to play - then what carrot are you going to dangle in front of them to be productive in a real job?
I would agree with you Bill if the focus was on education. If they actually maintained a grade requirement I would be ok with the sports program. But way to many times they ignore poor performance for the sake of a good team.
Sports are a key part of a child / adolescent development. It teaches them how to be a team player, work for a common goal, gets them exercizing which leads to healtheir eating habits, kids who play sports have higher levels of self esteem, and it boosts their immune system which ironically leads to more time learning because your not sick as often. It gives students a sense of belonging and worth, and makes school more than a montonous task day after day week after week. Taking sports and music out of schools is ludacris. Do you know how many young adults wouldn't be able to go to college if it werent for sport / art & music scholarships? What they need to do is stop putting 35 kids to one teacher in a classroom and stop creating educational budget cutts thus letting the students run the show, and the few slime ball teachers and coashes that are few and far between get away with suxually assaulting and manipulating kids and young adults. They need to give more power to teachers and coaches to be able to discipline kids the propoerly and have more monitors in the hallways and cafateria and assistant teachers in the classrooms to be able to catch onto this kind of stuff and stop it from happening. The students who did this shouldn't be allowed to attend school and Hazing should be cracked down on across the board. It's time kids start learning that school is a privlage and knowledge is something to be valued and earned, not taken for granted.
J_P_PatchesPal_1:
You should see some of the high school stadiums in the Dallas area. They look like professional sports stadiums, both in size and grandeur. There is one in Rockwall, TX (a suburb) that made me crazy at the amount of money that had to have been paid to erect that monstrosity. Unfortunately, too many adults are gung-ho sports but don't take any interest in the academic programs of their public schools (at least until their little Johnnie or Suzie flunk out, can't get a scholarship to college or into the college of their dreams because their grades and SAT scores are too low to qualify. Then they want to blame the school systems, the teachers, the administration, anyone but themselves).
I disagree that we should take sports out of school. 3 of my 4 siblings received scholarships to play sports at a community college for 2 years. My sister then received a scholarship to continue to play at a 4 year university. Myself and my other sibling received music scholarships. I also had an academic scholarship. We knew that our parents were in no position to support us through college and so we worked hard to earn those scholarships. None of us were thinking, "Oh, I'm going to go be a professional athlete or a professional musician." What were thinking was about getting through college with as little debt as possible. I'm sorry that these 4 athletes were put through this trial and that it's connected with sports, but that doesn't mean that we should do away with sports all through the nation.
I come from a generation when girls were not allowed to have school sponsored sports teams. And
guess what???? All the girls I knew STILL learned team playing (working on school projects together)
working for a common goal (yearbook), high self esteem (good grades), physical exercise (hard, I mean
hard gym classes, including swimming and running), all the things sports ALLEGEDLY teaches boys.
AND, we never stuck things up each others butts.
Sports in school from high school down is ludicrous. Put your kids on private teams. There are lots of them to choose from. And then YOU can pay for it, and I don't have to.
really? You think the only way to learn team work is to be athletic? That sports is the only way to work for a common goal? What ever happened to spelling contests? What ever happened to science fairs? There are many ways for students to work together to exercise those concepts without it being sports related.
As for exercise what happened to calisthenics, to gymnastics, to dodge ball, to basic exercise? Most people don't mind going to a paid for gym to lift weights and use the treadmills. Students really don't need football, basketball and sports geared to compete against other schools.
Yes, stop school sports and then in 10 years from now we will be reading about the obesity problem of the young...oh wait...
Stopping school sports is not the answer to sexual molestation.
Sparkly............Young women in my time did not participate in school sports, and we were not obese. AND, our grades were outstandingly better than the grades children get now. No drugs or bulling either.
Maybe because teachers then did not think patrolling the restrooms between classes was beneath them. And maybe over all we were just smarter than people like you.
SoSickoftheGop and Rick are a reminder to us all that any event that occurs in isolation, will be blown out of proportion by ignorant people who are bitter against it for some reason.
MrBurns.................I'm not bitter. I grew up in a time when people didn't shove things up other peoples azzholes, and men running for president did not hold other young men on the ground and shave their heads. You bitter Mr. Burns? Because we don't agree with you? Or you just may be (most certainly are) wrong?
You seem bitter with the whole women couldnt participate back then stuff you are spewing. This is an isolated incident, and the only reason it made the news is because it is so rare. I played sports all throughout school, so did most of my friends in other schools. None of us ever faced or heard of anything close to this. But all it takes is one incident, and crazy people, you, come out to say we must abolish school sports. So yeah you do seem bitter and ignorant about the situation. And nice bring Romney into this. Kind of makes sense with your name. You probably cry out for making guns illegal every shooting that happens. Maybe you can stop being bitter one day dear.
When did I ever say sports are the only way to learn team work? Stop reading between the lines, you're making yourself look ignorant. Every kid is different and learns different things in different ways. And guess what!? I pay taxes too AS$HOLE, lotts of them and have 2 kids of my own. I'd much rather pay for some other kid to be able to participate in sports after school then for their state funded health insurance for the rest of the life when they have diabetes and all of their financial aid because they can't get a scholarship, and that is if they even graduate from highschool! I'm from NY and guess what happened when they took sports out of schools where I live? Drop out rates and teen pregnancy rates sky rocketed! So Sick of the GOP, guess what?! It's a new age! Stop trying to retrograde our country! I'm guessing when you were a kid you also had a mom that was home full time to cook you and your family meals, wash and iron your clothes, scrub the floors, do all the shopping for your house, and walked around bare foot in the kitchen all day while your dad was at work! Unfortunately we live in a society where unless your family has loads of money both parents have to work! It's not that parents don't want to be home with thier kids all the time and be there to teach them! They can't afford to! And who the hell in today's day and age has the time to drive their kids around after school every day to put them in provate sports? And not every parent can afford to do that! There are so many single parents out there, and families where one parent is away in the military and the other is left to provide for the children alone! What the hell do you think school fundraisers are for? And I don't undertsand how the hell a spelling bee can teach some one team work? Guess what else? Sh*t like this happened between priests and little boys all the time, so are we going to ban religion too? Get a grip people.
culheath, cut it out dammit! That's twice this week that I had to agree with you. Something just isn't right! Good comment anyway.
Not bitter at all Mr Burns, you shouldnt be ASSuming, it doesnt look good on you, and if you had read more of my post you would see why I am against sports in school, But you are a jock so I dont think you would understand.
SickoftheGOP is one of those people that believe in minority rule. The few that screw up should not reflect the majority. I am pretty sure plenty of people that have not played sports have "stuck something in others butt holes" once or twice so stop generalizing! And just because you did not enjoy participating in a sport does not mean everyone shouldn't participate. Get over yourself. High School and College sports give others a push to succeed and do better. Plenty of people i know played in high school and college while graduating top of their class.
When my son was 12 or 13 years old I told him he could drop out of organized sports - that he didn't need to be doing them just to please me. He became more active after he dropped out of organized sports - he started running, biking, swimming, hiking - he also started becoming more active in school. By the time he got to college he was running mini marathons and he was President of the Science Club his last two years at college - he is now a medical doctor.
Saying school sports gives you an advantage is a cop out - if you want something bad enough, you will attain it. He got further by volunteering for professors than he ever would have gotten from recommendations from sports coaches. It was letters from those professors that got him into the #1 medical school in the nation - and letters from his teachers/doctors who got him into his first choice for Residency...name one sports coach that could have done that for him?
J_P... You are generalizing every kid in America to be just like your son. While you should be proud of him I think your ignoring the fact that although sports weren't for your son, that doesn't apply to every other child and teen in a public school system!
The problem seems to be that the "sickos" of this world have infiltrated the locker rooms of America. Kids are confused at a young age as to what is appropriate and not appropriate, and in many cases the desire to "join"/be accepted allows them to tolerate this type of behavior. Parents need a sit down with their kids and go over what is and what is not appropriate and to tell their kids to come to them with any concerns they have. Its not going to be an easy discussion to have but better to have it before the fact then after.
"The problem seems to be that the "sickos" of this world have infiltrated the locker rooms of America."
Meaning what? That there was a time in America when there WEREN'T any "sickos", in locker rooms or elsewhere? This kind of crap has always gone on in schools. Doesn't make it okay, but it has always existed. "Infiltrated" makes their presence sound like it's the result of an organized conspiracy. If so, by which "group"?
Today we talk about this bad behavior and press charges, so it seems like there's more of it happening. I was in high school in the 60's. I know of no case of sexual assault from back then, but a lot of the jocks made younger students the butt of sexually oriented and demeaning conversation in the locker room, some of them even touching others inappropriately. These were the same morons of course who cracked gay jokes all the time to show how manly they were. Sexual abuse of any kind equals, in the minds of some, "power" and "control". We have no epidemic of it now, but are witnessing, thanks to technology and the fact that society has evolved, a sad fact of life that has long been swept under the rug.
I was in the public school system in the 60s and 70s. Kids were kids and sex was happening. However, I never heard of the sexual hazing that I've heard of in the last 20 years. One thing I think was different when I grew up was the lack of all the sexualized "entertainment" that's available to kids today that influence their still developing brains. Free Internet porn on demand (it's there, photos and movies of all types), movies with plenty of graphic sex and violence that can be watched at home (you don't have to go to the theatre and be carded. Do they still actually do that?), TV that uses sex and violence to entertain (again, all hours of the day and night, hundreds of channels to choose from). Sex and violence everywhere. Now, really, I'm not a prude but there's plenty out there that glorify both acts and give children ideas they might NOT have come up with on their own. Just sayin'. How to fix it? It's going to take more from parents to police what their children are exposed to (turn off the TV, have them read a book. Use parental software to block sites they can view online and keep the computer in an area where parents can actually see what the kids are viewing, and sit down and talk to them about sex and respect for other individuals. Don't wait to do so AFTER an incident, don't wait for the schools to do this for you as their hands are tied by people that don't want them discussing these things with little Johnnie or Suzie. Consider this as part of being a responsible adult when raising kids.
I was in school in the 60's when PE was a requirement and showering afterwards was an assignment, and all of our PE teachers were lesbian. I think back on that and wonder...why didn't they just put men in the showers with us????
And you knew this how?
Severed Head..............Sparkly is an idiot. She knew nothing then, and she knows nothing now. I mean, she thinks they should have put men in the showers with her. She has big problems, yes?
Parents need to be parents and teach thier children right from wrong. This is so wrong on so many levels. I agree with Rick it is time to focus on what school is supposed to teach not entertain the students.
Hazing is looked at as way too minor an offense...Hazing needs some stiff criminal penalties attached to it....because, there are always those that "get carried away". Here in Tallahassee a Drum Major for FAMU was MURDERED (beaten to death on a bus in front of the bus driver) by his fellow Marching 100 band members...another band member (a young female) received fractures from her hazing....we do not need kids learning they can beat up and abuse someone and call it "hazing" and get away with it. ALL hazing needs to be banned, and the penalties so strong that the thought of the penalty will help deter the behavior. Every one of these "kids" that was in on this "sexual assault" needs to be granted a criminal sexual charge and get to experience having to register as a sex offender. Allowing them to "get away with it" now just encourages others to give in to their urges..........those that say "They are just kids"........if it was your child that was sexually abused how would you feel about it? Parents are too busy...bad economy and they are both working...no one watching or teaching the kids....this behavior is the result of such...you simply teach your children to keep their dash darn hands off others; teach them what is inappropriate touching; teach them that all bullying (no matter what it's called from bullying to "just having fun" to "just kidding around") is a HUGE No NO. Teachers want an easier job? Fine, teach reading, writing and arithmetic...cut out the sports and clubs...teach the kids that school is for learning and not mucking about. Make "hazing" and the physical, sexual, mental abuse that goes along with it have HUGE penalties....and parents, Teach your children.
The coach, of course, needs to spend some time in the pen....where I am sure, he will receive his just
punishment. I pray the "team members" get some jail time too....sorry, you sodomize my child....you better be begging to go to jail.........and pray they have to register as sex offenders when their jail time is done....someone needs to teach kids there are consequences for their actions....apparently they aren't learning it at home or in school.
I find your suggestions way over the top. The idea of causing even more damage by making everyone involved being legally labeled and forced to register as a sex offender which stays with a person for life is just cruel, hysterical and not at all helpful. The behavior mentioned in the article is wrong and should be dealt with but not by creating even more damage. This sort of thing has been going on for quite some time so immediately changing the rules and demanding severe punishment out of the blue for what was considered ok the day before is wrong and misguided.
These activities were considered OK by no one but the perpetrators. When they decided to do something with sexual connotations, they labeled themselves as sexual sadists. They earned the label. Let's see how proud they are to wear it!!
I totallty agree with this statement.. The only way to teach the kids is to show them that there are consequences to every action (good, bad or indifferent)... If the coach was indeed in on this, then make the coach register as a sex offender and get him out of schools and away from kids. However, if the kids did this on their own (thinking it was cool or whatever the reason) then make them register as sex offenders and let them suffer the consequences of their actions. That is the problem today, nobody talks to or teaches the children and every just wants to write things off until something totally outrageous happens. The kids that it happened to, I am praying for them and hope they recover from this trauma.
I was agreeing with IAmSmarterThanAThirdGrader comment about hazing....
And people are surprised when a kid shows up at school with a gun.
Culheath,
Play the game, wear the name. I don't really care about the ones who did the damage. I think they should have to wear a 'scarlet letter' and a sandwich board telling people what they did. Too much is kept quiet because they're 'minors' but that didn't stop them from doing the disgusting act in the first place. Any damage to them is of their own making, that and their parents who obviously never taught them that assaulting another person is wrong no matter what the cirumstance.
Faulty logic, culheath. It was not okay at any time, and to suggest so is insensitive, at best. When these kinds of actions are ignored, i.e., "well, since it was okay before...," no one learns the lesson. I certainly hope no one involved (allegedly) thought it was okay to stick a foreign object up someone's rectum. As a matter of fact, I hope that everyone knew, on a fundamental level, how terribly wrong this was.
Lets call "hazing" what it truely is. assault. plain and simple it is assault. Giving this type of criminal behavior a soft name does nothing to deter those that will do it. Naming the crime for what it is will give them one more thing to deter this behavior. ASSAULT = CRIMINAL.
culheath, you are a fine example of why situations like this are so far out of control. My goodness, no, we don't want to cause any damage to the perpetrators, now do we? Perhaps if we put them in time-out and make them write an essay on why their behavior is wrong, THEN they will get it. And it is people like ME who can share 50% of the blame......we all sat by and let the bleeding-hearts of the world create the low-level that society is in today. We sat by because "it didn't involve my child, and I should just mind my own business."
Well now we have no right to outrage; only shame. Let's all jump to the next story on MSN about how the latest fad is "butt-chugging"....... hahahahaha....isn't that sooooooo funny? Oh, these kids, what will they think of next? hahahaha...... yeah.
culheath, quit it! now that's 3 times in one week! I hate agreeing with you.
Why not have twice yearly school assemblies where kids are told what constitutes assault of all kinds, and the consequences of zero tolerance. Forget the parents--most of them are too busy with their own lives and the new wore off their human toy while it was still in the cradle. A highly trusted specially designated school counselor should be present who makes it clear students can tell them, that they won't be shocked, and won't do anything that would identify the student without their permission.
In other words, why don't we try to actually DO something about this problem instead of just wallowing in it?
That is a very good idea. Tell the kids what will happen to them. Suspended, Expelled. They were told what would happen. Follow thru with it. Send a letter home to parents what will happen if their kids is found doing such behavior.
It's not just sports. It happens a lot in military circles as well. And I always find it curious because those groups supposedly represent some of society's manliest men. But then you take a bunch of tough jocks and/or military men and put them together behind closed doors, and they can't resist going directly for each other's rectums.
We are talking High School here, not the Military
Rick..................Great Lakes is saying it started in high school. Can you not make the connection?
Great Lakes Liberal, I seriously question your knowledge of anything about the military, and wonder if you even went to high school!
Sick, if you would stay up with current events, you would have known that hazing in the Military hasnt be tolerated for many many years
There we go again with the generalizations. You liberals are sickening with thinking this happens in every sport, at every school. Get a life. Many people have done academically and athletically well in high school and college.
This is truely sad to think that the coach was involved with this.
I can't imagine these kind of things that are happening in sports continue and to me I would pull my child out of sports of any kind until all of sports is cleaned up completely.
Everybody involved should have to go to jail and when they get out they should clean the entire school with their tongue because this is so totally insane I don't have the proper words.
Sad, perhaps, but not surprising. It's part of the culture of groups and their leaders to show newcomers 'who's boss' by hazing them and humiliating them. No one wants to know about it but there it is. Truth be told, I'd bet that even back in the original Olympic games in ancient Greece the old hands gave the newest competitors a hard time.
Read the entire article! Don't just skim it this time. There are conflicting stories as to whether a coach had any involvement or not!
Make gym class last period. Just have the kids run, do push ups, sit ups, things like that and send them home when class is done. They won't need to compete each other and they can shower at home.
My old high school houses almost 1000 kids in one building and over 2500 in another. How would there be room to fit them all in a phys ed class one period? And about half the seniors leave early anyway.
Kris 68, Dave"s brain dead. He thinks this is about showers in p.e. class!
Please read this entire post before reacting like the idiots I know many of you can be. I am not condoning this behavior but think we have a better shot at stopping it if we understand its origins.
First, taking sports out of schools is a ridiculous overreaction. Participation in team sports teaches children (and adults) valuable lessons in teamwork, cooperation, leadership and healthy competition. While there are other ways to learn these lessons, sports is a very effective method of doing so.
Hazing behavior occurs because of an instinctual drive on the part of individuals to belong to a group. The need to "group" is rooted in the need for mutual support and protection and for establishing rank within the society. Hazing gives the newcomer entrance into the group and sets the group apart from the rest of society. Essentially, surviving the hazing makes the members of the group "special" and binds them to one another.
Clearly the actions in this case are a bizarre perversion of this ritualistic behavior. Likely one, maybe two, strong "leaders" within the group have taken what was probably originally low level hazing to this unacceptable extreme based on his (or their) sexual deviance. Over the course of time, the "leader" escalated the hazing behavior slowly so that the group members perceived it as "normal". It remains to be seen whether the "leader" is one of the students or one of the coaches.
What we should realize from this case is that pedophiles will gravitate to wherever there are children - schools, churches, playgrounds, recreation centers, etc. They need proximity to their targets. That doesn't mean that we should take sports out of schools, it means we need better screening methods when we hire people to work with children. It means we need better monitoring of the interaction of adults and children. It means we need better education of children of what is appropriate behavior from adults and what is not, and what to do about inappropriate behavior.
Thank you Joe. I'm glad someone finally thought this whole thing through and made an intelligent comment.
You, sir, are the reason that hazing continues. And please, don't call me and idiot because I happen to disagree with you. I have been hazed, or 'initiated', as they liked to call it. It never made me feel like part of the group, it only pissed me off. Let me guess, you were hazed and then you took it out on the next new guy by hazing him. Where does it end? And this case has nothing to do with pedophiles but with individuals who feel it's ok to violate the rights and the body of another all in the name of their own personal 'get back'. It accomplishes NOTHING but making the hazers feel superior. It takes a small mind to feel bigger by making others feel small.
joemike, I fundamentally agree with what you've posted, but I wish you hadn't started it off with an insult, whether true or not. You've made some assumptions there, though, that may or may not prove to be true. Other than that, well said, and thanks for posting suggestions rather than just railing against this behavior.
I can bet that those here that say sports is this and sports is that, are mostly male. I don't see why school is the necessary place for sports. There is little league in summer where it doesn't matter what school you go to you can join a team, The same could be done for football. In other words there is no need to have these sports in school. Doing these sports out of school would force the kids parents to at the very least bring the kid to the place it is being played.
joemike404, Four good paragraphs and I was agreeing all the way, then you had to throw in the pedophile stuff. Completely off topic! If you believe the worst of the accusations, a coach looked the other way. But, other than that, good points!
joy57111, Yes, we're mostly male. And, with a few notable exceptions, we're happy to be! Your comment could only be written by a woman with no experience in sports whatsoever!
More homosexual pedophiles!
Like yourself john?
Naw, just a bunch of weird heterosexuals playing a simular role to jailhouse suzie.
OMG JOHN!! Better hide!
Your statement is ignorant. Homosexuals are NOT pedophiles, you undereducated bigot. Now I know that, like some who are also as ignorant, you think homosexuality is evil and the Devil's work blah blah blah...I know of many heterosexuals that have done worse.
Try not to hate so much.
It is not homosexual it is really not sexual at all. It is more like yelling "homo"at a person. They are not getting any sexual gratification from doing it it is more humiliation of the hazee than gratification of the hazer.
bluepanther20, are trying to convince us there are no homosexual pedophiles? Prove it!
This is called the "Jerry Sandusky Syndrome". It will never go away. It could also be called the "Barry Borrock Soetoro Hussein Osama Syndrome". Our Country is rapidly losing all of its values, its morals, and its ethics. Want to know one big reason for this decay? Look no further than who "occupies" The White House. Our "Leader's" mentor was Frank Marshall Davis. Our "Leader's" pastor was Rev. Jeremiah "God Damn America" Wright. Our "Leader's" best friend was William Ayers. Our "Leader" spent over a million dollars to have his past records SEALED.
And we sit back and wonder WHY our Country is going down the tubes. Well, duh.
No, I think the country is going "down the tubes" because of ignorant racist dumbasses like you!
mr harley, your comment is ignorant. Why would you politicize a criminal hazing incident? It shows truly why our country is going down the tubes with uneducated citizens like you, not because of our president. Give me a break.
Sandusky's crimes may go as far back as the 70's. You better add a number of Presidents to your comment, from both the Republican and Democratic parties.
Or, you could just quit making absurd, asinine comments.
You realize that Jerry Sandusky and his Second Mile were one of original Pres Bush's 1,000 Points of Light, don't you?
It's people who think it's only one side of the table screwing the USA that are allowing the other side of the table to screw the USA - democrats/republicans, it doesn't matter, they are both backed by the same money.
If you want to make stuff political, you have to be able to 'see' where both sides are really doing the same thing to the average American.
Paul-3554271, While I think mr. harley's comments belong on a different thread, where do you get racist? You are apparently one of those libs that have used the term so many times that it has no meaning anymore!
Apparently it will take a few more arrests and lawsuits before the hazers and people who support hazing realize this is not an acceptable activity. The problem is hazing (another form of bullying), not sports.
You are correct! The problem is hazing and not sports!!!! Yet people are yet to comprehend that.
Think about it if you are a halfway intelligent pedophile what career choice are you going to choose? Right!
Guess we don't have to worry about you!
"sodomize with a foreign object" -- Is that considered 'legitimate rape?'
The article calledd it sexual assault. Essentially the same thing.
wtf...does it matter? Either one it's wrong...
Hey Moz, yu'll probably have to ask a POLITITION named Akins-atkinz, >>> BECAUSE he izz the only one who nose whutttt constitutes "LEGITIMATE RAPE", n' uno-it-2. >>>> HOWEVER - - - my guess wud be that the damned fool voters in whatever state HE comes frummmmm will no doubt JUST VOTE HIM/IT >>> right BAKKKK into office instead of sending the old FOOL - PAKKKKING, ... like they shudd be for doing!!! WAIT, WATCH & SEE then perhaps.
I can tell you exactly parents aren`t doing anything about their kids, because the government won`t let them. I know that everyone is gonna say, you can`t disipline your kids, give them time outs, grown them, don`t spank them. Does any of this sound familar to you ? If it does , you have to realize tha most parents today have given up on their kids because lets face it folks, since the government has gotten involved in the way we raise our kids today, you figure why bother, they don`t listen to us anyway. Does anyone remember what it was like when we were growing up ? He got spankings and as we got older we got smacked with a belt, but only on the butt, never anywhere else. How many of you know what I`m talking about. How many serial killers do we have in this discussion right now that grew up when I did ? I was born in 58 and last week I had my 54th birthday and no one absolutely no one was a murder, they didn`t kill their parents, burn down buildings, rape, and no one abused their children ! Where I lived was a small town, in Texas and if you did anything wrong the whole town knew about it before you even made it home from school !!! And when we were kids NO ONE and I do mean No carried a gun to school to kill kids that were just their friends 2 day ago. Government involvement in our lives have turned our kids into criminals and our lives into living hell. If you disapline your kids you can go to jail, they can actually file charges against you if they just get pissed off at you. They scream Child abuse and you are the one that has to prove your innocence. I`m sorry, if you think I`m standing on a soap box, but believe me I`m not. I`m no different than you are I`m just more vocal and more tired of it. I do disapline my kids, and if any body doesn`t like it then they can raise them. I`m raising my kids to have respect for themselves, and for others, not to follow the crowd, to be independant, to speak for themselves, to think about everything they do and how it affects others. I was once told by a very wise women, if you don`t take charge with your kids that came from your own body & blood and teach them right from wrong then You Deserve exactly what you get . It`s your choice. I think these kids should be hung by their scrotum for a day if they are guilty. No that isn`t cruel & unusual punishment, it a just verdict.
Connie, what planet did you come from? Odds are one or more children you grew up with were sexually abused. Your home town, no home town, was ever the paradise you claim yours was. It Texas is so great, why does it have the largest capacity state prison system in the country? Obviously a lot of parents in Texas are doing a horrible job of raising their children and, no, you don't have to whip a child with a belt in order for them to learn self-control.
I was spanked as a child...I know right from wrong...but I am pretty sure that, if I had not received the occasional whoopin,' I would still not have become a serial killer.
I think it's safe to say that serial killers have a LOT more issues than just not being disciplined.
And Connie, I have heard of instances where kids try that "abuse" crap because they get pissed, and the cops aren't as quick to jump to that conclusion as you think.
I get the feeling you may take disciplining too far?
Connie sounds like one of those people that confuse sodomy with discipline.
Spaking has been proven to be less effective then negative and positive reinforcement. Spaking is more for the parents to get rid of their frustration thaa it is to punish the kids. My mom didn't spank me as a kid, not because she didn't believe in it, but because she didn't need to. She reinforced my positive behavior and ignored me when I was doing something she didn't approve of. And I turned out just fine. Graduated at the top of my class with a 98.9 GPA when to a private college almost fully paid for, got my BA in Psychology and stayed on the Deans list my entire four years in school with a 4.0 GPA. I've never even had a detention a day in my life. I'm by no means perfect but I've always valued my education and had respect for my peers and adults, and I would never dream of harming some one else for any reason.
Connie
I hate to disagree with you but I am 3 years older than you and there were murders, arsons and rapes in the "good old days". Children were abused and I am not talking about a spanking or being hit with the belt. The only thing is that in those days if a child was walking around with a huge bruise anywhere on their body everyone turned a blind eye to it, even in small towns. Children didn't complain because they knew that if they did they would only get it worse. There were so many things that were going on behind closed doors that people never saw and there were just as many problems in the small towns as there were in the big cities. I lived in a city, not as big as NYC or Chicago but a fairly big city and we did have someone bring a gun to school and actually discharge it in school. No one was injured in school but someone was shot on their way home from school.
You try to paint a picture of a utopia that never was.
Yet it is the school district which called the police, not the parents. There is no reason to try and make the situation worse than it is - you can't. I think they need a new attorney.
They went to the school first, and the school did the right thing. That doesn't make the deed any less heinous or the school any less responsible for the people it hires.
Outlaw hazing in all institutions of learning. Next.
This is the sole result of improper supervision of these kids. If it was encouraged by a coach, that person should be charged with the crime of contributing to the delinquency of minors at the very least. Escalated to wanton endangerment and or pedophilia at the top of the spectrum.
Regarding the comment above about this sort of thing happening in the military, I beg to differ. It did not occur when I was a member. And if it had, the architect would have been subjected to a worse form of retribution than being put in the Central Confinement Facility. aka the Brig. We didn't need a soap in a sock party to get a wayward troop back in line. We had an axe handle that only required a light tap on the forehead while the culprit was held in his rack with his blankets. We had only one soldier in the platoon that required it and it only took once to square him away. There was never any hazing beyond the physical (PT) and verbal abuse from the drill instructors. Even that has been softened by the Army since I served. Replaced by the kinder and gentler drill sergeant and stress cards for the troopies. Pretty much a bad joke to me. New recruits need to be torn down from their previous life of ease and shaped into fighting men and women. Not stressed out pansies.
And when were you in, Herb? I went in in the mid-70's and it happened to me when I went to new units until I was promoted to an NCO rank. I damn near got ribs broken at one time and the guys who did it got off with a verbal warning, not even a counseling statement or Article 15. If you struck another service member you committed a violation of the UCMJ and should have been arrested and charged. All of you who did it. It's not right just because 'everyone does it'.
Herbiee S, you are one whacked out sumbeechboy. WTF =TAPPED on the forhead while thaa ressttah thaa BOYZZ held'um'down!!! Yesssssireeeeebilllybobbbbieeethornton saaaayz yu izz one low-life summmbeeechnidddyottt, fer shore, ... n'prolliee a chikkun-shyyyt 2.
They were released to the custody of their parents. THERE is the problem. The parents didn't teach them to begin with. I say lock them up! This is not about sports. It's about parents who didn't do their job.
Hey fool, >>> they are in a "LEARNING" institution filled w/coaches & teeeeeeechurzz, which do NOT alwayzzz have their own HEDDDDDZ, ... screwed on straight (OBVIOUSLYYYYYYYYY).
denko95
Name calling is really not necessary. Basic values are taught at home.
It's time for a reality check: where do you think new sex offenders are coming from? Do you think they just made themselves that way? There is far more of this kind of inappropriate behavior than society is willing to own up to. Oh yes, there is all the hand wringing when things like this come out but nothing ever really changes because society won't own up to the fact that SOCIETY is sexually perverted.
send um to jail, bubba will pass judgement most effectively
the ole broomstick to the dunger eh?....classic
they should have interviewed the custodian about ruining the gym broom
Their parents must be so proud. Put their name out there and lets see how proud they are when Everyone knows what they have done.
Finally the proof in the pudding (so to speak) that soccer isn't a sport, it's an activity. At least in real football like that played @ Penn State those who victimize use their own tool unlike these soccer/football wannabe's resorting to the use of a "foreign object" to do their dirty work. American Football Rules!... Go Packers!
