Playboy ranks University of Virginia as No. 1 party school

Officials at the University of Virginia on Wednesday weren't thrilled with Playboy’s dubious distinction listing the nation’s oldest public university as the No. 1 party school in America.

“We are demanding a recount,” UVA spokeswoman Marian Anderfuren told NBC News.

“It’s far more important for the university to be known for our academic achievements in teaching and research,” said Carol Wood, another UVA spokeswoman, in a statement to NBC News.

Playboy ranked the Charlottesville, Va., university -- founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819 -- as the top party school, beating 100 other colleges nationwide, according to Playboy’s 2012 Top Party Schools list. The rankings are featured in the October college issue.

"Raise a glass to UVA, whose students know a thing or two about raising glasses and everything important to this list," said Playboy on its website. “The Cavaliers placed an uninspiring 16th in sports but more than made up for it in nightlife and sex, finishing number three and number two, respectively. According to our math, two plus three equals one.”

The rankings were based on 900 data points across three categories: sex, sports and nightlife, according to Playboy officials.

Playboy’s full top 10 list:

  1. University of Virginia
  2. University of Southern California
  3. University of Florida
  4. University of Texas
  5. University of Wisconsin
  6. University of Georgia
  7. Vanderbilt
  8. Tulane
  9. Texas Christian
  10. Ohio State

The University of North Carolina (founded 1789) is the nation's oldest public university. But then, no harm was done. NBC News lost all credibility a long time ago.

Please check your facts. My world almanac and I believe that the University of North Carolina is "the nation's oldest public university." UNC was founded in 1789.

        Reply#116 - Wed Sep 26, 2012 6:00 PM EDT

I believe the oldest continuously operating public university is the University of Georgia, Athens, founded 1785, 4 years before UNC.

The College of William and Mary was founded as a private school in 1683, but is now public.

I agree that there is no conceivable way that UVA could possibly be called the oldest public university.

UGA was only FOUNDED in 1785. A piece of paper. UNC was graduating students long before UGA even opened its doors in 1801. Still, alot older than UVA.

I graduated from UVa in 1982 - in 1981 UVa got on Nightline and in Playboy as the country's biggest party school. It also got listed as the best school in the country that year in US News and World Report. I'm shocked it's years and years later and we're still getting labeled as a huge party school - I wonder what T.J. would think...

The university of Virginia is NOT the nation's oldest public university. Does no one check facts any more?

The list is, and always has been BS.

When I went to college, you could by anything that was available within 40 steps of my room. At any given point in time, there were about 5 guys tripping on acid or mescaline on my floor alone, and there was a keg party nearby where they went through 75 half barrels of beer. We didn't even make the list.

UVA is not the oldest public university. Georgia was the first chartered in 1789, and North Carolina was the first to admit a student in 1792. Methinks UVA protests too much.

Georgia, Athens was chartered in 1785 and is thus the oldest public university (or rather, the oldest university chartered as a public institution, since William & Mary is much older and initially private). I believe Rutgers was founded in the 1760s, but it was initially private as well. Chapel Hill was chartered in 1789 as a public institution. University of VT was founded in 1791, also public. I believe there are three or four others ahead of UVa.

Also.. wasn't the University of Delaware chartered sometime around 1740?

Actually Stephen, UGA was chartered in 1785, UNC in 1789. But see above. UGA did not even open its doors until 1801.

“It’s far more important for the university to be known for our academic achievements in teaching and research,” said Carol Wood, another UVA spokeswoman, in a statement to NBC News.

Without reading this entire article, it would appear the UVA spokeswoman, Ms Carol Wood is embarrassed by being selected by Playboy magazine as being the #1 party university in the country. What makes Playboy the authority on this subject, or any thing for that matter? Like Ms Wood, I'm in total agreement with her assessment. It's more important for a university to be known for it's academic achievements, than the number of six-packs of beer drunk at some party. Isn't improving our minds and security in the workforce the main reason we go to college in the first place? I've never attended any of these listed universities, but if I had, what roads are we allowing young students to take? Apparently, education is not their #1 priority.

I would say that there is a direct correlation between alcohol, partying, and grades. The greater the alcohol consumption, and partying, the lower the grades. You have to assume that many who go to college to party end up failing out, and returning home to live in their parents' basement.

Mr. Harley: There is a lot of research on that. It has been proven over many years, too much partying, too little studying... not much learning... not good.

Any research on how many end up on the internet late at night bragging about their party school from the basement? Just wondering...

Funny how the bible belt runs things in the Playboy top 10! Look, none of the "elitest, liberal, heathen" universities of the northeast, or northwest made it. It must have something to do with the intelligence level drop the farther you go down south. Funny how most of these states also lean republican. Coincidence? I think not.....

Oh come on, people! Weren't you ever 18? The parents want a good academic school. The 18 year old boyis looking for a party. I can see where the school would not want to be known for that, but like a winning football program, it is something that brings in students for very little reason. Universities in FLA are on that list every year. Sounds like a great place to "learn"!

I consider my college education to be an important part of my life. A place where I could excel in my field and remain competitive in today's fast-pace work place. Unfortunately, some students don't share my assessment. They totally ignore the fact of how essential a college education really is. Yes, I was 18, once, but my college education was my #1 priority.

Drinking and partying in college are not things to be proud of nor bragged about. Especially at UVA. Just over a year ago at UVA a psycho student with a drinking problem bashed his girlfriends head in. Yeah, what a great badge of honor to wear. #1 party school by Playboy.
