Lucky 13 brings $202 million for Powerball ticket sold in Iowa

A Powerball lottery ticket sold in Iowa with a number line-up bravely built around the number 13 matched the six numbers drawn Wednesday night for a jackpot prize worth $202.1 million.

The numbers were 13, 26, 39, 41, 42 and Powerball 10. As NPR points out, the first three numbers played are all multiples of 13. The drawing took place on Sept. 26 -- also a multiple of 13 -- as Philly.com points out.

The number-savvy winner and the location where the ticket was bought are still unavailable. Another ticket that matched the first five numbers but not the Powerball one was sold in Iowa and is worth $1 million, The Associated Press reported.

"Due to of the large number of big prizes involved, the Iowa Lottery’s processing of the winning information is expected to take longer than usual," a press release from the Iowa lottery read Thursday.

According to the AP, a group of 20 employees from Cedar Rapids shared a $241 million Powerball jackpot in June.

Completely inane story. The numbers are drawn at random, and if the ticket was a quick pick the same is true.

Some numerologist could come up with some sequence in any six numbers.

Tell me, Isn't it a little bit weird that most of the winners are from the midwest to the east coast? Rarely see any winning in the west coast. Can someone explain this to me? please?

Because we're hours ahead of you, we get to know the numbers before the drawing.

That's funny. I live in Iowa (where the PB is HQ'd) and until this summer I always found it odd how there were never any winners in Iowa ... they always seemed to be Arizona.

I have been thinking the same thing. NV and CA may not have powerball, but what about all those other west coast states, all the PWRBall winners seem to come from mid to east US for some lucky reason :) .

This is also true of a free sweepstakes I play. I determined that the chances of someone being drawn as the winner (or number of tickets sold, as is the case for the lottery) from the mid west to the east coast are greater because the population density is greater in those areas. http://www.census.gov/dmd/www/pdf/512popdn.pdf

@ DaddyMac, False. Powerball is no longer HQ'd in Iowa. It moved to Orlando last year, FYI.

RafelT, I agree with you, I thought it was just me and my way of thinking. But, it seems that the winning tickets are always from those areas Hmm! and that east coast, west post is inaccurate, they cut of the ticket sales at a time where when they do the drawing all states have stopped then the drawing is at 11pm est so that is 8pm pst and the sales stop at 7pm pst so they are in da? Now, what's up with putting Obama in this? Wow! some will take any opportunity to take a shot at him. LOL!

That isn't true. For example, the drawing is at 11:00 EST on Wed. & Sat. I live in the CST. Our cutoff is 8PM (9PM EST). For people in Denver, their local cutoff time is 7PM and west coast, their cut off time is 6PM.

Is that really too hard to comprehend?

It might depend on the state you are in. I usually pick up tix for my mom, who doesn't drive much anymore and I was sure the cut off was 10 pm. Just the other week I forgot to get them so I ran to the 7-11 and purchased tickets for that day's drawing and the time stamp on the ticket is 22:16:18 (10:16 pm for those who can't convert to 24hr time) so evidently cut off time is not 9pm... or 10 pm either.

The number-savvy winner and the location where the ticket was bought are still unavailable

            is stupid.

just how the hell do you know the winner is number savvy when you don't even know who it is?

and the winning group was from a different drawing BTW.

I literally woke up in a sweat and once I grabbed my ticket and realized I was NOT the winner - I can't explain the RELIEF I felt! I chit you not! I woke up a different person. I won't EVER buy another ticket again! That dream was too real about how your life goes to HELL if you're the UNLUCKY one to win that kind of money overnight. It will destroy this unfortunate person! And yes...to have MORE than I have would be nice - but I would NEVER want THAT MUCH! I could handle a million dollar windfall easy enough.. Pay off my bills, but a new fishing boat and a truck and tuck the rest away for rainy days. But 200+ Million? NO THANK YOU! lmao

The article refers to the winner as number-savvy. I sincerely doubt the winner ever took any of those equations into account when purchasing the ticket, which was probably churned out from the machine at the local convenience store. I hope the winner consults a good, reputable accountant before he redeems that ticket. Good luck!

This article is telling me that I need to move to Iowa. Why do these lotteries always hit in places where the least amount of money most likely is contributed? More people are in the more popular locations, such as the East Coast, New York, Cali, etc. Are the more affluent and overpopulated places doing so well that people aren't playing enough to get a hit? The math isn't adding up to me. It's always someone in the middle of the country. #confused Anywho....congrats to 'em!
