University of Kentucky restricts alcohol at tailgate parties in response to post-game fights

No alcohol at the tailgate party: That's the decree of University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto.

Campus radio station WUKY reported that Capilouto on Thursday announced the alcohol ban from non-reserved tailgate spots in response to fights after UK lost to Western Kentucky University on Sept. 15. Also banned: DJs and bands.

University spokesperson Jay Blanton said that an area along the university's Cooper Drive was the center of the problem and that no drinking would be allowed in the area between Sports Center Drive and University Drive.

Tailgate party with no beer-that is NOT a tailgate party.

I wish them a lot of luck trying to enforce this. All they will do is push the parties off University property to places where they have no control at all over what goes on. A tailgate party without beer is not a tailgate party, so this will never work. The solution is to target the very small number of people who start the trouble and deal with them, not to penalize everyone for the actions of the few. On top of that, the odds are that the trouble makers will stir things up regardless of the presence of alcohol, so I do not see this ruling having much of an impact on the problem.

Great now the rednecks will just get drunk as hell and then drive to the game. This is gonna backfire big time. I see more accidents and possible deaths from this.

JD: You are delusional if you dont think the fights in bars and spousal abuse is due to alcohol. The other hard drugs pale in comparison.

Nice. fight when your team loses. Start fires and shoot people when your team wins. Very sportsmanship-like.

All five years I went to the University of Kentucky, the campus was dry and I'm certain that hasn't changed since May 2011. So what's the point of this mandate?

Act like kids, get treated like kids.

Dead on! They need to identify the perps and prosecute. No where else in or society is that kind of disorderly conduct and violence tolerated from individuals (even in bars). Number one mangagent/leadership rule concerning dicipline. Compliment the group, chastise the individual.

The problem is, these are not kids fighting. They are alumni, and/or the parents and relatives of students. I live in the GA TEch neighborhood and the 'fans' openly flaunt the open container laws with their tail gates, littering and generally stinking up my neighborhood.

So all this railing about 'kids' is only about 15% of the problem. The real troublemakers are the former students who have no school disclipinary oversight by the schools.

And now all you have to do is reserve your parking space so there is someone to hold responsible if things go wrong.....................GO DAWGS!

"non-reserved tailgate spots" I guess we just have to reserve our tailgate spot from now on.

Dave, there are already laws against drugs other than alcohol and prostitution and gambling - that's the difference. Alcohol is the only legal hard drug - unless you count all of the Oxycontin given by the real drug pushers - the doctors.

Am so proud of these kids. True Americans. Blue blooded. In a few years time they will all be ready to be sub servient to the Indian and Chinese dorky kids...the nerds...the loosers that spend the same years honing Math / Science / Software skills. Then it will be time to foul mouth and denigrate the Indians and Chinese kids as either slum dogs or squint eyes, while they party, collect welfare ....from the same $ pool where the rich dorks put their money in. God Bless America...

At least at South Carolina there is't that much space to tailgate. That's why we go in SUV's and Vans. Don't need hotdogs or any of those fattening foods on our own grill, plenty of others giving them away.

Its a football game, not a reason to get belly dragging drunk and act stupid. Go to the game, enjoy the play. If you want to get drunk, go to a bar. Real nice to see families attending the game only to have to walk through people fighting, language problems, vomiting students, very impressive. I wish more universities had the guts to do this.

State supported universities should not allow alcohol in their parking lots, or inside the stadiums. Period.
