Purported anti-Muslim film producer ordered jailed in probation case

A judge will decide whether or not Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, the producer behind the 'Innocence of Muslims' film, violated the terms of his 2010 conviction on bank fraud charges. NBC's Savannah Guthrie reports.

Updated at 12:26 a.m. ET: A federal judge on Thursday determined a California man behind a crudely produced anti-Islamic video that inflamed parts of the Middle East is a flight risk and ordered him detained.

The judge ordered Nakoula Basseley Nakoula to remain in custody until a hearing to determine whether he violated the terms of his probation, stemming from a conviction on federal fraud charges, NBC News reported.

"The court has a lack of trust in the defendant at this time," Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal said in making the ruling, citing a pattern of deception and the possibility Nakoula was a flight risk.

He had eight probation violations, including lying to his probation officers and using aliases, and he might face new charges that carry a maximum two-year prison term, authorities said. Nakoula will remain behind bars until another hearing where a judge will rule if he broke the terms of his probation.

Court records show that Nakoula was convicted on federal fraud charges in Los Angeles in 2010. Among the conditions of his probation, Nakoula was barred from using "any online service at any location" without the prior approval of his probation officer, according to a copy of court records in the case.

A 14-minute trailer for the film "Innocence of Muslims" was posted on YouTube in July, leading to protests around the Middle East. The trailer depicts Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester.

Violence broke out Sept. 11 and has spread since, killing dozens, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens in Benghazi, Libya. Nakoula went into hiding after he was identified as the man behind the trailer, the Associated Press reported.

Protests ignited by a controversial film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad spread throughout Muslim world.

Earlier this month, federal law enforcement officials opened an investigation into whether Nakoula violated his probation on those fraud charges in his efforts to promote the movie, an official told NBC News.

Watch the most-viewed videos on NBCNews.com

The official emphasized that the probe of Nakoula relates only to whether he violated his probation order — not into the content of the inflammatory movie. "This is not an investigation of the film," the official said, or in any way intended to infringe on his "First Amendment rights."

A self-described Coptic Christian who was born in Egypt, Nakoula is said to go by the pseudonym Sam Bassiel. That moniker that caused widespread confusion when the film was first released earlier this month when someone associated with the film said that the producer was an Israeli Jew with that name.

Suspected anti-Islam filmmaker questioned

Others have disputed that the video was the cause of the violence in Libya. On Wednesday, Libyan President Mohammed Magarief told NBC News' Ann Curry that the attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Libya there were carefully planned terrorist events, not the actions of a mob angry about the video.

In an interview with NBC's Ann Curry, Libya's president Mohammed Magarief said there's 'no doubt' the attack that killed four Americans in Libya was preplanned, and not a result of the controversial anti-Islam movie that sparked violent protests.

NBC Los Angeles, NBC News' Olivia Santini, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I see that NBC still insists using the headlines of

International protesters have cited the 15-minute video posted on the Internet, called "The Innocence of Muslims," as a catalyst for their demonstrations in countries such as Libya, Tunisia and Egypt

I truly look forward to when the present administration will provide truthful facts about the attack in Benghazi, Libya, killing the US Ambassador and 3 Americans. It also seems that the FBI now has "permission" to go to Benghazi to look for evidence. How convenient, as the attack occurred 16 days ago. Where do you think the "evidence" will be by now? My belief is the Consulate and Safe House where the killings transpired are sparkling clean from the desert winds! Wonder if everyone there had enough timr to sanitize the scene?

Knew in advance this was happening on 9/11..(alcaida) This administration always sets things up but this time there are four men that were killed.. The day after, the ayatollah called Jesus Christ a bastard...Now who rioted over that one? Nothing like having goons in DC.

This memorandum addresses the matter of how we can maximize the fact of our incumbency in dealing with persons known to be active in their opposition to our Administration; stated a bit more bluntly—how we can use the available federal machinery to screw our political enemies.

John Dean memorandum to Lawrence Higby explaining the Nixon enemies list.

Might as well have been written today. Anyone that believes the reason for this arrest is a "probation violation" is simply ignorant.

I'd like to highlight the statement by the pres of Libya: "President Mohammed Magarief said that the attacks on the U.S. Consulate there were carefully planned terrorist events, not the actions of a mob angry about the video". But then, in the very next paragraph, tha author STILL makes the statment: "The amateurish film, which was distributed online, prompted riots throughout the Middle East".
It is apparent that this writer is bent on the idea that the fault lies with a video rather than a hateful bunch of Islamo-Nazis.

The video was just used as cover-up (kinda like NBC usually does) for a 9-11 payback. Well now what Mr. Obama, ya going to blame this one on Bush also? I think all US troops should guard our embassies and have their bullet tips, of the ammo they use, dipped in pigs blood. Ya think maybe that will stop a Muslim that has an idea about attacking our embassies, you bet!

So, this has nothing to do with free speech. He broke a previous law and had an agreement under probation. He violated his probation. Now it's up to a court system to determine if he should be punished. The court system will now decide if the parole violation should lead to further punishment. Now a judge may determine how severe the punishment should be. Picking a light punishment or a heavy one is at the discretion of the judge. So, the lesson to take away from this is if you're on probation, and your parole violation becomes worldwide news.... expect some sort of repercussions...

While I agree that this arrest is about his probation violation not the movie, I think it was a mistake. The probation violation was a very technical one and the reasons for restricting him from using the internet without permission had nothing to do with thing like this film, it had to due with an a conviction for on-line bank fraud. As much as I hate to say this, he should have been given a pass on this technical parole violation in order to avoid the appearance that the government was caving to the fanatics in arresting this guy. No matter how many times the administration, the FBI, and everyone else states that his arrest had nothing to do with the content of the film, the fanatics in the Middle East will spin this as a victory resulting from their riots. This will only serve to encourage future riots whenever they do not like something that is said or published under the protection of freedom of speech. This arrest was a huge mistake due to the appearance it gives and is only going to lead to more violence!!!

The attack in Benghazi was a planned attack, and I don't think anyone, not the author of the article, not the W.H., not one single thinking person would assume otherwise. The misconception that it was related to the film happened early on when information was still scarce, and so it was easy AT THE TIME to assume the Benghazi attacks were the result of outrage over the film. We know better now.

BUT, the other attacks across the Muslim region WERE provoked by the film. Granted it's a demonstration of "manufactured" outrage, as some have taken to calling it, perpetuated by extremist muslims who hate the U.S. and used the film to foment hatred.

The facts are now coming in and the most blatant fact is that Obama's administration knew the murders of the Ambassador and the other three Americans was an act of terrorism that had nothing to do with a stupid utube video. They had warnings about the attack and did NOTHING. After the attacks Obama was soooo upset that he had to calm himself by fundraising in Vegas.

First off, he hasn't been proven to "violate his probation".

He was arrested because they believe he did...

Arrest and conviction does not negate one's rights. His freedom of speech still intact. Only the fact he used the internet is the question...

And fully expect others to make sure that video flourishes, considering the attention hungry masses that troll the internet daily.

Also, if you believe the video, or this man's actions caused any form of rioting... you need to talk to a good doctor, because you are delusional.

Reason being, 90% of the masses upset can't read or write and do not even have access to material to read and/or write, so they have zero access to a computer.

Any information they are fed, that upsets them, is done so by individuals who wish to gain an advantage through the mobs. Namely the extremists who tried to use it to justify the deaths of 4 individuals at the American Embassy.

Any attempts to "make an example" of this man is just for show. They will use what ever means to make the arrest legal, and do not be surprised to find someone calling for extradition.

Over 2 weeks and we still don't have an explanation of how our Ambassador and 3 delegates were killed on the 9/11 anniversary.

This whole movie thing is a ruse. The Middle East is exploding because they sense weakness in the West. Weakness because we have an empty suit president who is too busy appearing on the View and hanging out with the "Pimp with a Limp" to make sure he gets his votes.

It's time to rid our White House of this embarrassment.

If you believe that an attack like this had anything to do with an anti muslim movie, you are living in a fantasy world. We supported the previous Egyptian dictator's regime for decades as we have done in countries throughout the middle east (I'm not criticizing this by the way). Now that Egypt is being run by Egyptians after our support of a violent oppressive totalitarian government for more than a quarter of a century, don't you think that maybe the power vacuum, the resentment, the unstable political and legal environment would all lead to some blow back?

We've been playing this empire game for 50+ years and are just now entering the second act (and in the second act, the people whose necks you rested your boot on get up and come for your head). Maybe it's time we worry about our crumbling infrastructure, high unemployment, massive debt, disappearing civil rights and stop worrying about a bunch of people in a desert half away around the world. We are after all a net exporter of oil - we produce (or could produce) more than enough domestically to leave the sand babies to their own devices and stop with all of the 'preemptive strikes,' and other crap designed to do nothing more than line the pockets of large defense companies and their bought and paid for politicians.

The word was out days before the attack on the 'Consulate', to release the 'Blind Sheikh' or the attack would take place. Of course we do not deal with terrorist so the 'Consulate' got hit... I wonder why the security was not beefed up? You can verify this info any where on the net... Also I have a couple of pics of the 'Ambassador', being tossed around in the street still alive, if anyone wants to send me their email address. He did not die inside the 'Consulate' from the fire or explosion or gunfire, he was 'Beat to Death'...

So all the posters here that convicted this guy of a parole violation without due process of law and burden of proof are fine examples of propaganda sheeple.. Of course Mr. Obama put pressure on the system to support his agenda like he has on several other occasions which is illegal.. Is it just possible someone else posted it to Utube or just maybe his religious freedom is being violated.. If he did put this up it did not have any financial pinnings and was just religious educational material the parole board can not censor or restrict it under the first amendment.. So from that point of view he had no obligation to run it by them regardless of parole terms..

What I would like to know is why wasn't he shipped back to Saudi Arabia after his FIRST conviction? People are always whining about illegal immigrants... Why aren't ALL immigrants (legal or illegal) deported when they are convicted of crimes instead of keeping them here, where the American taxpayers have to support them? (Oh yes, and put them on the "no-fly" list as well.)

The expenses included International Vacations, Limos...

Using AF1 to jet down to Chicago to play hoops with some friends. Extravagant parties with celebrities....etc

Other expenses in clude a full time playmate for BO THE DOG at a salary of $102,000. a year

George Bush used AF1 to fly the Bin Laden family and their friends from the Bush Ranch in Texas, back to their safe havens in their own countries just hours after the tower attacks. I think it was just mere minutes after they stood together and watched the twin towers collapsing. The only flight over american skies that day and at the tax payers expense. I really don't remember even one conservative or anyone else whining about that.

This guy is an idiot and it looks like he violated the terms of his probation. However, we ought to be considering the possibility that his "arrest" may not be what it seems. If you do a little searching for photos of the arrest, you will see that his isn't in cuffs, but has his hands in the pockets of a very large over sized coat. When you see full length photos it appears that very likely the long coat is covering a substantial bullet proof vest. It is a strangely heavy style coat too. Not the kind of thing most people in LA would even own. Additionally the covering surrounding his head has an unusual appearance to it to and has a sheen to it not unlike a synthetic type fabric and it also appears to be rather heavy material. Also, the cops escorting him seem unusually helpful and "polite" so to speak.

The cops have had squads sitting outside his vacated home for days now too. It is entirely possible that his "arrest" is for his own protection. You have to ask yourself what the cops should do in a case like this. There is little doubt that some foreign radicals have put a price on his head, but we don't know about any specific threats here in the US. Plus the guy is a convicted criminal on probation and with evidence to suggest he violated his probation. So under these circumstances, should the cops be putting him up in some "safe house" and spending tens of thousands of dollars protecting him? I don't think so. Lots of people say and do stupid things that get people upset and even bring known threats to them, but we don't spend a lot of government money providing them special protection. Why should this guy be any different? Not to mention that he's a criminal. I don't think "witness protection" applies. What is he a witness to? His own criminal act of violating his probation?

If you think about it, what kind of escalation do you imagine could happen if some dumb ass attacked and killed this guy?

Personally, I think they "arrested" him for his own protection. Legitimately he could be arrested for the probation violation so it provides an excuse. I would bet he isn't in the general jail population either. It would be even worse if somebody got to him in jail. I think they are doing him a favor by arresting him and I would bet that he isn't too upset about it.

If he were to get killed, it would just create a huge mess and if they went out of their way to protect him above and beyond what they would do for any other citizen, it just looks like the government is standing behind his stupid act. All things considered, I think this was a smart move and I'm actually surprised it didn't happen earlier.

Sometimes things are not what they seem. There are too many clues to suggest that this wasn't just an ordinary arrest or was some attempt to harass him for what he did. I think many may be jumping to the conclusion they want you to come to.

Doubt seriously the cops are really concerned about this guy's safety. This is more like an appeasement gesture.

As to attempting to coverup for Obama's massive personal spending spree, blame Bush but guaranteed that Bush didn't spend near that amount of taxpayer monies. Obama is living REALLY large and the folks supporting him think it's ok. Obama tells people they need to tighten their belts and turns around and parties and plays and campaigns on taxpayer monies while people are eating from food stamps. Sorry, anyone who attempts to make excuses for this sort of behaviour is beyond hopeless. Marie Antoinette and King Louie weren't as bad as Obama. One point four BILLION is a sh!tload of money. Think of what that money could do for poor folks, but hey, its Obama, he's entitled.

Its nice to hear that the guy behind the videos got arrested but seriously though, it makes no sense how the video gets posted in july and yet no one acts on it till september. It seems more like there are people being paid to act like crazy fanatics then they are acting like it from there own will. I have seen many muslims who dont even care about the video period because that kind of @!$%#ty stuff is all over. So because one idiot makes a video means there arent others out there that wont do the same? The are drawings, burnings of the Quran and other things that people do against Islam everyday. So its not like rioting is going to make things any better. So for you obtuse ones who keep claiming the muslims wanted to kill and all that, well you can shove that under the bus because if muslims were like what you people say we would be shoving picket signs and riot gear at your front door by now

Will anybody please explain to me how the Libyan President knew this uprising had nothing to do with the "movie"? Did he have insider information or could he possibly be a conspirator in this terrorist attack? In either case, his "supposed" knowledge certainly makes him appear suspicious.

Perhaps he is as ignorant of the truth as the rest of us. Perhaps he used this situation and abused his position in an attempt to unduly affect the outcome of the coming U.S. election. Which candidate does he favor to further his cause?

Bin Laden used this tactic successfully in 2004. Was this one of the most treasured videos he watched in his secret compound? Which candidate did he favor to further his cause?

Ayatollah Khomeini did the same in election 1980 with the Iranian hostage debacle. Was it truly coincidence that he released the hostages on President Reagan's inauguration day? Which candidate did he favor to further his cause?

How many Middle-East government or terrorist leaders have October surprises in store for us to determine the election results of 2012? I'll leave you to ponder these many questions without disclosing my own conclusions.

Oops, just one more question. Is it patriotic or traitorous to cheer these foreign meddlers because they favor the same candidate as you?

This IS outrageous---compare it to the Communist Countries for speaking out.

Hopefully, President Obama did not use Nakoula, the Egyptian Christian to his benefit, not admitting the entire Libyan Terrorist Attack on the American Consulate was because of 9-11. The Attack was well coordinated, with professionalism from the Terrorists. 4 people were tortured and slain.

It is shameful that people care more for this failure of a president and their party than they do about their country and what is happening here. They will believe the lies even if the truth was right in front of their faces. This is what happened in Germany. Peole believed everything hitler was saying and look what happened. Who cares what film this guy made. It is his right to make a film. While odumbo was at the UN making his lying speech that it was the fault of the film that the Americans got killed, carney was telling a press conference that it was not the film at all. They should get together on what lies to tell. Now odumbo looks as stupid as he is.

Yep he is being investigated by the FBI and who knows how many other federal agencies due to a simple parole violation. I can safely say, he wouldnt be locked up if this video wasnt produced, just because they have or hope to find a technicality to keep him locked up. Doesnt mean our free speech isnt under fire..

Just a humble assessment on this situation...

I don't believe this is about our government taking away this guy's free speech or him violating his probation over a film - granted, they may be some merits to this claim. You simply don't get the FBI involved in "crimes" like this, where you have other federal (U.S. Marshals for example), state and local agencies more than capable of handling a violation of probation case.

However, in the grand scheme of things - that is, when you can look at the events in context - you just had a Pakistani government official offering $100K for this guy's head, I won't be surprised this guy asked our federal government to protect him. And where's the best place to do this without the U.S. appearing to upsetting our "allied" Pakistan? Well, a federal slammer.

One only needs to remember this guy would be put to rest if he ever steps foot outside of the country.

jjsee- I find it amusing when people such as yourself expect the informed to search down all the sources of correct information they have just because you are not informed. You should be the one educating yourself, as it is no ones job to do so except your own.

FBI was not allowed in to investigate until yesterday...fact

The President of Libya has confirmed through several news outlets that the film had nothing to do with the attack and that , not only were they aware of a planned attack, they informed the White House of the plans and the White House DID NOTHING. In fact, The two seals were ordered to NOT carry ammunition loaded in their weapons.

There are several videos of combatants (because thats what they are...not protesters...not rioters...not demonstrators) being asked about the film and they were unaware of its existence.

The White House chose the film as a smoke screen...NOT the combatants. The ONLY thing the film has to do with this event is that the Obama Administration used it as a scape goat to give the American people something to point a finger at other than the Obama Administration.

I am filled with hope to see the vast majority of these comments being posted by informed individuals who have realized the truth behind the Obama agenda and the deception and ignorance being exuded from Washington under this administration. I am still puzzled, though, by the few commenters somehow associating and implicating the Republican party with any part of this attack or its cover up.

To say things like "The republicans must pay terrorists to attack when they are down in the polls" is an absolute ignorance driven statement made by the most idiotically liberal minded individuals who seem to be dead set on Socialism and tyranny as the next chapter of the American story. It is time to pull your heads out of your a$ses and see the world for what it truley is.

All electronically. Which is why one of his probation conditions was that his access to the internet be limited, that he not use any pseudonyms and that he refrain from engaging in fraud and misrepresentation (which he did when he placed a casting call on an internet page as Sam Bacile asking for actors to work on a historic film called 'Desert Warrior.') Just by putting the casting call out he violated every term of his probation.

They release me once I found it, but warned that if my name comes up in front of them again for any reason they can put me back in deportation permanently though I am not deportable. For this reason I don't drive, don't own a car, don't travel, don't vote, don't register for a passport.

Life was hard, lifespans were extremely short, and in order for your genetic material to survive and be passed on you were supposed to have as many children as soon as you could. Many children didn't survive infancy, fewer still survived to adulthood, so you married many women, started them having kids as they were physiologically capable of getting pregnant in hopes of getting at least one child that survived to adulthood.

(It was for reasons like this that the Chinese used to have whole litters of kids, and why he government instituted the one-child policy to curb the rapid population growth when economic stability and advances in medicine led to more and more children surviving to adulthood. There was no more economic or biologic need to have ten, sixteen, nineteen kids.)

But I digress. The whole point is that pedophilia is a modern concept for a modern age, and so can't be applied to the morals and standards of someone who lived 1400 years ago. At that time, what he did was perfectly legal.

It amazes me that everyone on this vine thinks they know everything that happened. Those who are blaming Obama for knowing this was going to happen in advance better start blaming GW Bush for knowing that the attacks on the towers on 9/11 were going to happen. He had information for months and did NOTHING. Oh wait, isn't that what all of you are saying about Obama??? Pot calling the kettle black???? I hate to inform you that you only know what the media (conservative or liberal) wants you to know. Do you people honestly think that the White House is going to tell you everything they know in advance so it could be broadcast worldwide??? If you think that, I have a piece of swamp land I would like to sell you.

And for those of you who think Romney could do better, please be assured that with his knack of insulting world leaders, he would be dead by now and Ryan would be President. There's a scary thought. I guess I'll just have to stick with what we have now for lack of anything better.

                    hearts2004,

What exactly was Bush supposed to do to prevent 9/11? Put turrets on top of all tall buildings in the country? There is proof and documentation of an uptick in national security during the months prior to 9/11 and airport security had been becoming more stringent for years before. Additionally, the "information" that the Bush administration had was that "an attack by terrorists was expected". No when, where or How. They get that warning nearly every day and have for the last 30 years. Lastly, We were not attacked again during Bush's tenure, so, in any prudent person's understanding...Job well done.

Now we have Obama. Days before the ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11, The White House gets a call FROM THE LIBYAN GOVERNMENT (as stated by the Libyan President himself), explaining that there are people planning an attack to our embassy on the anniversary of the WTC attacks. Obama had the place AND time and not only did he not increase security, Susan Rice ordered the only 2 Navy Seals present to NOT CARRY ANY AMMUNITION on that day. In the days immediately following the Libyan attack, 20 of our embassies were being attacked throughout the East and Middle East and the MainStream Media reported NONE OF IT! There are dozens of "on the street" style interviews currently on Youtube of Libyans being asked about "the Video" and NONE OF THEM KNEW IT EXISTED! The Video had been on youtube for almost a year and is one of literally thousands of videos that could be and would be classified as insulting to Muhammad. The President of Libya CONFIRMED that the existence of the video is unknown to most Muslims in the middle east and that the attack had nothing to do with any video.

Your liar-in-Chief and his administration continues to report that some video caused this attack and NOT Obama's ignorance, poor foreign policy, self indulgence and all together lack of leadership and a spine. OBAMA IS LYING TO YOU! He has done nothing BUT lie and raise taxes since he got into office and he is making our economy 10 times worse than what it was! Unemployment is worse. Foreign affairs are worse. the GDP is worse. Our dependance on foreign energy is worse. Healthcare costs are worse. crime in inner cities is worse and detroit and chicago have turned into urban battlegrounds. Entire cities are going bankrupt. He has said himself that He is a SOCIALIST and believes in redistribution of wealth (which nulls and voids the American dream of success and financial independance) and you want to "Stick with what you know"?!

Do you understand that the free market is a uniquely American concept and that it allowed individual success on a scale the world had never seen before? It birthed the industrial revolution and advancements in science and technology that were hindered before by communist, marxist and socialist tyrannies?! Why exactly do you think every major scientific advancement in the 19th and 20th centuries happened in America? People like Einstein, Tesla and Oppenheimer immigrated here because they could not get the financial support, freedom and security needed to do their research anywhere else in the world! Tyrannical, government controlled societies stifle advancement. Had Galileo and Davinci had the freedom to pursue their studies instead of being forced to hide it from the tyrannical government, the industrial revolution would have happened 2 or 3 hundred years sooner. Look at the Middle East, Tyrannical government control and dictatorships have reduced those people to barbaric murderers with no contribution to the rest of the world except what we can suck out from under their feet. This is what you want for America? This is what your vote is going to cast toward?

How would making a film violate his probation? I hope there's a reasonable explanation.

Because it is a condition of his probation that he not post anything on the internet without first showing it to his probation officer. ANY conditions can be placed on probation - and remember, he is the one who accepted those conditions. So if he did what he had agreed not to do, he violated his probation. It's called the law-- and has been exactly this way since the probation program began. As for you who think this is an example of the Obama administration's tightening on personal freedoms, you are merely stupid. Please try harder to actually read up on a subject before you form your half-baked knee-jerk FOX-fed opinions.

If he did make the film, how do they know HE put it on line? And you know the Obamas of the country could not wait to find a reason to get this man. Guilty or not. And even though I do not agree with his crappy film, I defend his right to say it. Hell, I may not like his sentiment but the last I heard we still have freedom of speech in this country. At least until the Muslims take over.

Obama had to punish his free speech.

No, read carefully...he violated his probation, which are terms he agreed to. By agreeing, he acknowledged that posting on the internet -- posting anything -- could get him in trouble. It did. You're defending a person convicted of check fraud...but if he had defrauded you with your checkbook you'd be sending him to the gallows. Way to commit a double standard, and all so you can childishly blame Obama for this idiot's so-called "film" and it's consequences, both for the Muslim world and for his parole violation.

I'll bet you dollars to donuts that if someone posted a video on the internet depicting Jesus Christ as a pedophile the religious right would have a conniption. We would never hear the end from loonies like Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, and Pat Robertson. But since it was about Mohammed instead, that made it acceptable. And Obama, being the Kenyan born Muslim that he is, had to trample on his First Amendment rights. Uh huh.

Please, Newsvine, make some people pass an IQ test and be of a minimum age before they can post. Some comments on here demonstrate an IQ of around 75 and the maturity of my five year old grandkids. Sheesh...

First, Im not republican, and I dont care if someone posts a video attacking Christianity. Look at many TV shows and movies out there. They make fun of Christianity all the time. You know what christians do? They protest and get upset. They dont kill people and try to destroy buildings. And no, I would not send someone to the gallows for check fraud. When you have to use hyperbole to make a point, you dont have a point.

And what does Obama being Kenyan have to do with anything. He was born in Hawaii, and I dont give a crap what his ancestory is. Oh I get it, its because you dont have a valid point that you need to call me a racist. Got it.

And I gaurantee you my B.A. in economics at UCLA says my IQ is a bit higher than 75. If you really want an IQ test, you are going to have to stop posting on these threads, because you made not one valid point in your attack on what I said.

I feel sorry for your grandchildren having a crazy grandfather like yourself.

Yeah... that's what everyone is complaining about. Being punished for violating parole is such BS. To hell with the entire criminal justice system already. Let's let the criminals run free. /sarcasm off

The issue is that this was used as a sort of a sneaky tactic to violate the guy's right to free speech. I can guarantee no arrest would have been made had it not been for all of the rioting and such. The government most likely decided to press the issue in an attempt to placate those that were angered by the film. He could have posted pretty much anything but that film, and the authorities wouldn't have done a thing. That is what's total BS.

That may be true, but would those "loonies" encourage the public to riot over it? Would they encourage attacking and/or killing anyone who looks like they may share the same nationality as person who made the video? No, they would not. How do I know this? People make fun of Christianity all the time, and I have yet to see anyone incite a riot because of it. They may get upset, but they speak their mind about it and get on with their lives. Sorry but you could burn a cross or piss on a Bible and still not get much more than a grumble out of Christians.. Why you ask are they not running the streets burning cars and effigies of Muslim leader?? It is simple, 1- they are taught to love, compassion and tolerance from the time they are children where as Islamic cultists teach their children hate and intolerance straight from their book of evil the Koran.. 2- a Christians faith comes from within and not from a book made of paper so if you burned 100 Bibles they would just print 1,000 to replace them where as a peace loving Muslim cult follower would riot and kill over the burning of a Koran because they worship it as the body of Mohammad like pagans worshiping idols..

The morons tried defacing a Bible to anger the Christians and their efforts got them arrested.. They say it was for blaspheming Christians but I would bet it was because they touched a non Islamic religious book.. Reading, possessing or even touching a Bible is a major sin punishable by death.. So what are they so afraid of when it comes to the Bible??

Just FYI Barack is 6.25% African (Black), 43.75% Arabic, & 50.00% White... Wow... So he should either be a white President or Arabic President, Shouldn't he...? Either way he is still a POS Islamic/Muslim!!!

According to the report, in 2010 he was put on probation and told that as part of it, he could not post anything online for 2yrs. It is now 2yrs later. WHEN in 2010 was he put on probation? As in what date. When in 2012 did the film get posted on You-Tube?

They are holding him in jail which seems ridiculous to me. All they need to do is check a few dates. He either violated his probation or he didn't. This isn't rocket science.

As for him being an ex-con so what? Excepting the fact that he may or may not have violated his probation he's done nothing else wrong. Whether you like the premise of the film or not.

                        MNSlim,

It's not just Republican's, there are 'Conservative's' on both sides of the fence. That's why some of the Democrat's have spoken out against Barack, or voted with the Republican's. Also, have you noticed how many 'Actor's' have started coming out on the 'Consevative' side this year? Several! So it looks like to me the 'People' are getting tired of the same ol'crap from the 'Liberal' side of the coin... I know I did!!!

@Iwonder - An IQ test to post? Reminds of when they tried to get IQ tests to qualify voters. You can imagine how well that went over for democrats

Quite funny that you said that since the original poster of that was one of you hypocrite dems. Scroll back and see. You just shot a topedo into one of your own. Hilarious that you all constantly show, as you scream obscenities against any moderate or conservative, what a bunch of hypocrites, racist and biggots you ultra-libs are.

Now for the libs that can't figure it out, what the moderate and conservative people on here are posting about isn't that they are supporting this person, they are just highly suspicious of the conditions under which he was arrested and being held. I would dare say most everyone thinks this guy is a pimple on the a$$ of society. Just as you libs are always yelling that every arrest is racially motivated or some government conspiracy to keep you down, you should be the ones marching in protest for this guy, but you are not. Why? Why are you all suddenly wanting them to throw the book at this guy, but you will march in protest of the likes of the underwear bomber? Do you not see the contridictions there?

The Constitution got discarded as soon as we started the War On Drugs.

Really? You just proved they call it dope for a reason. Not really the topic here, just to satisfy you that think having your legal dope parties with cure all ills, remember that when they legalized alcohol, the mob switched to dealing dope, they they legalize dope, the drug cartels will switch to another illegal activity to get their money. That is the way they work, history backs me on this.

                        Confused -

Do try to learn wtf 'due' means. It really was a simple question; I do not have time to read every news story. Also, is it really that surprising that I was unaware of a probation stipulation concerning posting videos on Youtube? Like that should be common knowledge to which only the truly oblivious would be ignorant. I also do not see how it would be unreasonable to be concerned about a possible infringement upon someones right to free speech. An individual made a crass film many might find controversial and offensive, akin to films such as the much celebrated Religulous, and in response a bunch of f*cking morons rioted. Now the guy that made the film gets arrested for an innocuous clause in his probation that would probably be overlooked were it not for rioting third-world dumb_asses. If you want censorship I'm going to disagree with you but fine, at least make it across the board. Nobody can make fun of anybody for anything ever again. The filming industry should be shut down for gross "divisive" abuses and for hurting peoples feelings. Opinions should be banned outright under anti-bullying legislation. Everyone will need to be either gay or muslim; unless in the presence of those choosing to be muslims at which point everyone will need to temporarily become straight muslims so as to not blaspheme and indirectly burn down a city or an embassy. Let's be fair here.

NICE!!! good to see sense of humor is intact. Thanks for the laugh, but you just insulted ultra-libtards and jihadist everywhere because it is taking them too long to look up the meaning of your words and understand the dripping sarcasm. They are now going to riot and burn down their dope dealers house or a welfare office (because they know how to find them) and then you will be arrested for enciting a riot because you should have known or controlled that they might react in such a stupid, utterly destructive, hateful and foul way.

now that all of the moderate dems, independents, moderate conservatives and far righters are getting a good laugh, back to our originally scheduled programming

Yes, and as long as the government and the people of this country think it is their place to control the morality of others by playing judge, jury and imprisoner, history can only repeat itself.

Maybe you were misinformed from one of those Faux propaganda bites, but no one has ever stated discontinuing the War on Drugs would "cure all ills". This country is filled to the brim with "ills". Just as the ill advised Prohibition ruined the lives of many Americans, the same and more can be said of this near 40 year wasteful War on Drugs. Many citizens have lost some of their Constitutional rights because the government has been regulating what they put in their own body.

The only "winners" in this war have been the government agencies; such as, the DEA, the military using it as barter and to fund their own agenda (remember Iran/Contra), local law enforcement, the industrial prison complex and the cartels/gangs. The only losers have been the American people and those thousands killed for this manufactured, self serving, War on Drugs.

...think having your legal dope parties

You may not like what someone else chooses to ingest or chooses to pay to have sex with, but no one assigned you or anyone else as the Morality Police and it's really none of your business. Until this changes, you're correct, history will continue to repeat itself.

You folks are funny, gotta hand it to you. Go read the constitution and all its amendments, it is chock full of morality issues. WTF do you think stopping someone from murder or rape is? It is a morality issue, our founding fathers said, nope, can't have everyone murdering everyone. Every single law is based on safety and morality so your point is pretty much moot. By your own words, that you want to get paid for sex while stoned and that be ok, so where do you draw the line then. Someone else wants to rape and kill you while you are out and about, since there is no more morality cops (and its really none of their business) they should now get away with that too?

Not so damned simple once you break it down, is it? You need to look at this and learn from the history of drug use and abuse, not just repeat it.

It is still a morality issue, I am sorry that you are so misinformed about drug abuse. One of my very good friends runs a rehab center for recovering drug addicts. If you saw the pathetic shells of humans that are destroyed by drug abuse and trying to get their health and right minds back, you might understand. I have heard from them, the stories of horrible things they have done to themselves and others in the name of dope.

This isn't propoganda drummed up, it is facts, I do get to see it first hand on a regular basis. You are living in a dream world and not a real one.

It is not your place, nor anyone else's, to judge morality. The only job you are responsible for, is judging your own morality.

What I choose to do with my own body is my business. Would you appreciate someone making it against the law for you to wear makeup, or dance, because in their judgment and the way they were brought up, it's morally wrong. There are some religions who govern themselves that way.

                            Think about it.

And btw, drugs and alcohol can be devasting to one's body, and instead of wasting billions of dollars on an unjust and unwinnable "war", a more helpful approach would be to use that money towards drug and alcohol education and rehab. There are many, many people who would like help getting off the alcohol and drugs, but have no help available to them. Ask your rehab friend. Many insurances are no longer covering in patient rehab. Private rehabs, such as Betty Ford and Promises, want $30,000 to $60,000 for a month's stay, up front.

Drugs and alcohol are a problem, they have always been a problem and will always be a problem. Instead of failing by attempting to legislate the problem away, we should deal with the problem by assisting those who want the help.

You can not compare the poison of drugs, murder, rape, prostitution to those (including fundamentalist fire and brimstone christians, certian sects of the jewish religion, and muslims/islamist) wanting to outlaw make-up and dancing. Or might I add, those islamist and cult types who wish to make homosexuality and blasphmey an offense punishable by instant death, without trial, and who practice this currently. They aren't even in the same league. If you live in the very small areas that are controlled by these folks, MOVE.

But since you bring back to the religions who govern themselves that way, which is technically part of what this whole discussion line is about, I guess then the Ultra-libs should love the coptics for standing up to the islam extremist who rule their women with an iron fist, who can stone a woman to death for going outside without a male family member in escort. It does get complicated when you add in all the shades of gray, doesn't it?

With over a billion spent on D.A.R.E., plus hundreds of millions of other dollars spent on MADD, SADD, RADD and the likes, while attempting to limit the flow of drugs. Imagine if we just said, ok, gates are open bring all the cheap dope you want in, its now ok. You disagree that it would become nightmare proportions, but that is what I truly believe. Not propoganda, but from witnessing human nature unfold in front of me. So the impass is that you aren't going to change my mind, and I will not change yours; in closing then I will wish you the best of luck on your chosen path then.

Maybe you will never understand the difference between what is judging morality and what is judging harmful acts on others.

One should be legislated when it does harm to others, while the other should not because you are only inflicting harm onto yourself. Inflicting harm onto yourself, no matter the degree, is and should be respected as nobody else's business.

You remind me of those nosy, gossipy neighbors who make it their business, to mind other's moral business. Thank goodness you're not my neighbor. Lol

I actually quite enjoy my privacy, but do have nosey neighbors.

Do you think that drug abuse is harmful to others, you have said no, but I wish you could stand in my shoes for a while. Do you have any idea how hard it is on a child who's crack whore (literally) mother locks them and their two syblings in a closet with a pot to crap and pee in while she goes and scores a buzz and then leaves the 9 year old to take care of the 2 and 1 year old for a week to go to another city. My foster kids do. The oldest is back with me permenantly after two taxpayer paid in patient rehab stints and a jail sentence (again paid for in full by the taxpayers) have failed. Grandma is taking the younger kids, but not the eldest because he is not a product of her drug addicted and quite worthless son. Oh and the taxpayers will be paying for them up through the age of at least 18, so no, I don't agree with you that self induced addiction is ok and has no victim.

As far as talking to my friend, we do talk about it, a lot. She loves helping, but rehab success rate is at best pathetic, especially with meth and other physically addictive drugs. It really is a sad situation.

Yes, it's called negligence and we have legislation in place for that. Just as forgetting you left your child in the car while the temperatures outside are soaring and they die. You legislate the negligence, not the reason for the negligence of forgetfulness. If we start legislating crimes due to forgetfulness, just about every person in this country will do jail time.

...but rehab success rate is at best pathetic,...

So we should just give up on rehab? How has the billions of dollars invested on the war on drugs been working for us? It's been a complete failure, as you can attest to with the care of your foster children.

You will never stop terrible and bad acts from humans being perpetrated on another. No war on drugs, no death penalty, no nothing will ever stop it. But what we can do is mitigate the problem through education and rehab made available to all who want it. All criminalization does is ruin people's lives even further, especially for those who have made it out of the clutches of alcohol and drug addiction by forcing their criminal record, if they have one, to punish and follow them for the rest of their lives. That's not helpful to anyone.

This lie-spewing hate monger and the rest of his gang of producers and actors should be charged with capital mass murder and terrorism for this. Their hate-speech film killed four Americans and made muslims riot and murder on an international scale. It's about time this government ended this "you can say whatever you want" and get away with it when the consequences are riots and murder. These film-making haters need to be tried and executed for their crimes against the rest of humanity. They recklessly endangered the every other man, woman and child in the US with their buckets of lies and hate-speech and expect us to just sit here while they are making Muslims riot and murder us all. If it weren't for these haters, Muslims would't be continually rioting, chanting death to Americans, flying planes into buildings and trying to kill all of us. These foul hate-mongers need to be arrested, tried for the murders they made Muslims commit and executed. If we execute enough of them, eventually the rest of us will finally be left alone to live in peace.

So what you're saying is that if we don't like what someone says about something important to us, all we need to do is riot and murder random people until the government steps in and kills the people we really want dead? Or are you saying that certain segments of the world population are genetically predisposed to violence and anyone from a more refined demographic who commits an act to exacerbate that inclination should be subjected to that same violence? If the first is true you're psychotic; if the second is true you're racist. Either way, both views cannot be held by a rational human being; only those with the most extreme of intillectual deficiencies. Honestly, the concept that people like you actually exist seemed mythological and absurd to me at one point in my life; damn you Internet.

The fear of arrest may stop some from using, but obviously not many considering the insane number of arrests and growth of prisons that have occurred in this country since the inception of the War on Drugs.

The only accomplishment of the War on Drugs is the creation of more and more criminal Americans.

This is about a parole violation, not a first amendment issue

Well god forbid you speak out about the government and have any unpaid parking tickets. That's a contempt of court violation which requires immediate imprisonment. The point is, there are plenty of "laws" around to throw YOU in jail for if you anger the wrong people.

Anyway, as I do not believe a single thing coming out of this administration, I will continue to believe this man is a political prisoner, and the story above is a made-up lie.

Our culture clashes with their culture. And I find it interesting that the filmmaker proclaims himself to be a christian.

The shrinks have a name for it, I believe. In this case, right to free speech was taken away by a Federal Judge and the Federal cops arrested him for "probation violation". His crime had NOTHING to do woth the internet to begin with. The arrest is another BHO reaction against any criticism of the Islamic cult.

The candidates are both talking the same language. just one will be elected. our economy sucks because no one gives a damn. they want to blame it the millionaires and anyone who makes more money than they do. i have been out of a job for over a year and a half. i don't have any health problems and i was working in a trade i thought would never fell to hire people. now sir the tides have changed to the point that the trade i worked in is not the only trade that is not hiring. i don't blame the administration for me not working or having the job i loved so much doing. i blame this administration for scaring the hell out of everyone. this is a president that not only wants to have full control over our health care, but our whole society, and to control our lives. he does not care about whether you have a job unless he thinks it will benefit him. Mr. Romney is no different. he wants to continue along the same path that all the other ding bat presidents we had in office. the only difference between obama and all the other presidents, is that he is the most careless president we have had in office since jimmy carter who was the most ignorant president that we ever elected in history of this nation. President obama is not far behind him. i pity the troops that have to serve under him. he is not very smart and he does not listen to anyone.

Obama did not have anything to to do with the removal of Freedom of Speech. Dick Chaney wanted it removed for government security and that did not happen either. His freedom of speech was removed since it was a condition of his parole.

If I am this guy i hope they try to prosecute me, then you file a lawsuit against California and cite all the sudo-celebrites like Lindsay and Amanda Bynes being repeatedly let go for much worse offenses. I have to believe even though he did violate his probabtion, this is all pandering, if he had posted a gay rights video I guarentee that he would not be arrested. And before anyone has a hissy fit I am not bashing gay rights just simply making a point.

Yes the arrest was a vain attempt to placate moslem sensibilties. But this chicken sh-t lied about his name, started the rumor rich jews were behind his film, and enflamed hostiliies on both sides of the world. On top of that, being a Coptic christian, he has surely endangered his sect in Egypt. Don't arrest him. Publish his picture and address everywhere. Spielberg, Lucas, Oliver Stone, and Scorcese love all the notoriety for their films. Don't deprive him of getting all the rewards for his work !

Not sure why you are defending the guy - he was world-class jerk, having been convicted of fraud and identity theft before. Apparently not very intelligent either, if he thought he could get away with it. Not very smart to promote the film, then have it translated to Arabic because it wasn't getting noticed, and then tell some Arab reporter about it, all while on parole. Makes you think someone think someone else was pushing his buttons to stir up an international ruckus just before an election.

Actually, it's pretty clever. Remember how they nailed Al Capone? Tax charges. Couldn't get him any other way. This reminds me of that in a way. This guy did nothing illegal by making the stupid film. But by uploading it to the internet he violated his parole - a little technicality, but there it is.

For this guy, they give him some small time in jail for violating his parole - assuming this is the right guy and he did violate his parole. The rest of the world just needs to see us "doing someting about it". By the time he gets out for the few weeks he'll be in jail for the parole thing, this will have blown over. He gets his wrist slapped for not following rules of parole, the Islamists have their excuse for violence removed (for now...until the next time...probably soon...oh well), and nobody's free speech rights are violated. Neat trick.

                                                                        • 5 votes

Parole violations typically send you back to the clinker to serve out the rest of your time. I think he got out of jail on time served and had like 5 years left to serve. But I could be wrong on the details there. I just know parole violations are more serious than probation violations.

Doesn't really matter - I repeat the guy was an idiot. The people pulling his string not so much.

Seems the first 5 books of the bible IS the Torah, IS the Koran. They are based on Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuterotomy... All the SAME - just the names were changed. The DIFFERENCE between all 3 is the next set of books. Christianity by the "Apostles", Judiasm by the "rabbincal council", and Islam by the "Prophet". It's the world's largest game of telephone tag. Three of us hear a speech - each takes something different from that speech - per our own personal wants/needs. Welcome to three religions - how else could you get such diversity from a landmass no larger than NJ?

I've got this picture in my mind of you slathering foamy drool all over your keyboard as you type these posts, veins sticking out of your neck and forehead, face turning purple with rage, bloodshot eyes crossing... I find that very entertaining. You're putting the protesting Muslims to shame. Really, you are. Not sure what you think you are accomplishing with these rants, but you really should pause to take a breath, and think through your rants a little. Honestly, I'm getting a bit concerned you going to have an aneurysm if you keep it up...or at least you're going to get picked up by the guys in the white coats.

I understand though, that when someone is in the news, the police will check up on them more, and so that's how the parole thing would have come up.

So they found a way to do it and publicly arrested the artist to try to both continue the action line that all the murder and mayhem in the Middle East is because of a movie, and to find a way to censor and arrest the artist. First, the attack in Libya was pre-planned and they knew stuff was brewing there for months, before anyone heard of this video. Second, if anyone thinks that the extermists overseas who murder an Ambassador, sack and attack Consulates and Embassies, and tear down and burn and rip up our flag will stop because the rights of Americans were surrendered to them, think again, it will always be something else, another threat, another complaint, another demand. It won't stop until we stand up for freedom. What Picard said in Star Trek TNG's "The Drumhead" is still true.

I grew up my whole life seeing religions freely mocked and impugned in art. I was told the First Amendment Protected that in America. What changed here? It should apply and this filmmaker should be free. Arresting him sends a message of surrender and ushers in a new and chilling age, where the Bill of Rights is torn up whenever the government thinks some overseas terrorist, mob or dictator might get "upset" or "outraged." Instead they should _learn to deal— as civilized people must with a world where free speech means occasionally hearing something you don't like from someone. As we saw by the New York subway poster incident recently that attitude is coming here too, and it is corrosive to human freedom and the rights we all take for granted as Americans, but as we see now most certainly should not.

He could have distributed it just about any other way, and would have been fine. But no, he had to post it on the internet in violation of his parole. Seems to me the people pulling his strings picked a perfect stooge to raise a ruckus and then take the fall.

Keep waiting, sadly. I feel that the Media's own credibility as an institution is invested here and all too many of the people in the media will do anything to protect that. Especially whitewashing the Benghazi thing and continuing the line that the only reason the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt (Which has preached hate of the US for years) hates the US is some youtube clip. I think there are reporters that will challenge that and show what the media in Europe has, but not many in the top ranks of the media want them to. The editor types are invested too much in the Obama Administration. Just remember that making a movie about Muhammad that is rough on him will get you arrested by the police, and getting up and saying "God Damn America" gets the President of the US to call you a spirtual mentor. (By the way both examples of speech should be protected, even people who offend you have that right, something we taught school children in America once.)

I also believe you are right that they want the evidence to disappear and that is why the CNN guys finding that diary, instead of the Al Quaeda types, shocked the White House. I believe that they wanted that scene to be compromised up down left and right, so nothing politically inconvenient was found by Investigators or the Media. Will the Media investigate this or keep playing dumb and keeping up the shill? This next few weeks will be a test for them to see if they still have the spirit of Woodward and Bernstein, of Sam Donaldson and Mike Wallace, in the core of this new generation of reporters and editors. It has been a rough couple weeks for the media, I hope they can get things back together and investigate. Otherwise I fear for the future of that institution as the fair and powerful force it must be in a free society.

That being said, he's still got a right to free speech, and should be protected, not attacked by the US government. That's what makes us great and Al Quaida inferior.

There was no excuse for this attack on Americans. I say speech is speech and fair is fair. Of course the Media and Entertainers in Music, Film and the other Arts who make their living thanks to the God-Given Freedoms that are recognized by our Bill of Rights aren't saying word one to defend this guy either, guess they think they can't be next. Wrong answer. They should be the first to defend free speech if they are honest. We're seeing a lot right now about how good citizens of the US who make the country work are treated vs. murderers and terrorists.

Putting an insult to Islam on the internet is like the same thing. The ought to arrest Rev. Jones in Florida too. But realize the attack in Libya had nothing to do with the film, that had already been planned. But 20 people in Pakistan died as a result of riots there which were brought about by resentment against this film. You don't go and over turn a bee hive among a group of people allergic to bee stings.
