Six teenage girls beat Pennsylvania woman, videotape attack, police say

Cell phone and surveillance video capture at least five teenage girls beating a mentally disabled woman in Pennsylvania. WCAU's Jesse Gary reports.

A group of teenage girls beat up a mentally disabled woman in Delaware County, Pa., made video of the attack and posted the clip to Facebook, according to Chester police.

In the video, which was obtained and published by the Delco Times, a group of six girls approached the woman, who was sitting on her stoop.

One of the attackers started punching the 48-year-old woman. The attack then moved inside the home, where the teens continued punching her with their fists and hitting her with chairs, among other things.

Police say the beating happened near 12th and Morton Streets Tuesday around 9 p.m. in Chester. The suspects are 16 and 17 years of age.

The victim suffered cuts and bruises on her face but did not get medical help, according to police.

Len Worby, one of the victim's neighbors, told the Delco Times the attack was the second in two weeks.

“She got beat up about two weeks ago,” Worby told the newspaper. “Someone hit her over the head with a gun.”

A local parent saw the video on Facebook Thursday morning and tipped off police.

Police say they tracked down four of the teenage girls in the video. Two of those arrested are sisters, according to the Delco Times. The Associated Press reported they were charged as adults with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, burglary and harassment.

"The parents are upset," one of the officers told the Times. "The girls are defiant. It's like they didn't do anything wrong."

Investigators say they're searching for two more girls who they believe were involved.

"Their behavior is animalistic to this poor woman," Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan told the Times. "We are going to aggressively prosecute each of them for their callous indifference to this woman."

Good Lord ~ what did that poor woman do to deserve two beat downs in a short period of time? The girls will hopefully get what's coming to them but what about this woman? Seems no one looks out for anyone anymore, certainly not in that neighborhood.

If these were my kids I would woop their asses so hard. Then I'd sell every single thing they have except their clothes and confine them to their room except for school. Pieces of sh*t

Norm...I agree with you 100%. Problem is that parents are not allowed to discipline their kids anymore! CPS is called and you'd get busted for "child endangerment" and "child abuse". If these girls had been raised like we were, with every action having a consequence, I bet you dollars to donuts, we would not be reading this story right now!

I would also beat my kid silly if she (or he) EVER did anything like this, even if I had to go to jail for doing so. I would also turn my child into the police - we could do time side by side.

I think back and say wow! these kids don't know what is was like. I was spanked on occasion and popped in the mouth for even mumbling under my breath. My mom loved me and she disciplined me when I needed it. My mom encouraged me to call CPS if I wanted to. I knew better. I knew kids in foster care and they were BEAT. There is a difference between spanking and beating. Somewhere along the lines the parents didn't do something right. But at the same time some kids are day and night. The parents see one thing and the kids show out when the parents aren't around. Since these girls are dam well old enough to know right from wrong, responsibility for your actions is a must. I propose the parents need to pay for them to be in jail so the tax payers don't have to pay for this mess. You want the girls to eat in jail? Buy their food, stationary, etc. Both parent and child taking responsibility for the crime.

Norm, if they were your kids, it wouldn't have happened.

It's lack of discipline more than 99% of the time. A teacher isn't even allowed to send a kid to the principal's office anymore in some schools. Teachers and parents used to work together. If you got a note home, it didn't matter if you were right--why the hell were you getting a note at all? I have a friend who's a teacher; she says there are still good kids, but the proportion is getting smaller each year. The bad kids are getting louder. They know they won't get in trouble; why should they work? Why not curse out the teacher if they can curse out their own parents? Some have nice, helpless parents who work all week, some parents are just like the kids. School administration often plays sides and takes home a paycheck.

Kids need to be protected, but we've gone a complete 180 in trying to protect them from abusive adults, to the point that they know they can get away with murder. If my kid turned out to be a bad citizen, then I've failed as a parent. There's no excuse for this. Society is paying for it. By the time you are beating up anyone, no less a disabled woman minding her business, you are too far gone. These girls need prison now, since nothing else worked.

Strip them naked and place them in stocks in public square. Every passer by gets to give them a whack with a cane pole. Lets see how they feel when they loose there pride and dignity ( if they ever had any (). These same street punks will be calling soon so the tax payer can pay for the birth of there illigitimate child that they conceived on one of there outings. Spare the rod spoil the child. You know there's more than a few rotten few in every bunch. That doesn't justify racial profiling in anyway. These individuals speak only for themselves and not a whole race. So the only people they set back was themselves. The girls are straight trash and should be punished. But their wrong doings shouldn't be weight for another person. Leave the racist crap out. I'm sure you wouldn't want someone profiling you.

"Leave the racist crap out." EVERY time there is a black on white crime,,, it is RACIST to even mention race.... but any time there is a white,, or hispanic on black crime,.,,, race is CONSTANTLY mentioned.. why isn't the media reporting this?? where is cnn, msnbc, cbc?? anyone? why not give THIS story just a FRACTION of the attention that the trayvon martin incident got?? why?? because it doesn't meet the "criteria" for the mainstream media... meaning,, there has to be a black victim for there to be racism... anytime there is a black on white crime,,, race is,, well,, it's a coincidence...

        #32.2 - Mon Oct 1, 2012 7:36 PM EDT

Your wrong Tim. Its racist either way. But if you constantly make racist remarks, you're a racist. I understand observations but the same can be said for anyone of any culture.

Somethings are coincidence but others aren't. I know the media is biased and only shares bits and pieces of stories but that doesn't change the fact that some people are just a-holes. Each person is accountable for him/herself. I don't go around grouping people based on their skin tone. Stop being apart of the problem, be part of a solution.

My point is that its sad that someone can say this as if the other pot doesn't get dirty too.

And then they wonder why they get racially profiled. Sad. A few rotten apples takes them a step back.

So does Honey Boo Boo set white people back (assuming you know who that is)? No That family speaks for them self, no one else. I'm not going to group a bunch of people together based on some f*ckery from a few people, and assume that all people of that same background are the same. That just plain stupid. That like saying all white people are apart of the kkk and etc. They didn't set the white race back at all. that group made a bad name for themselves (only the people in the group)

Black people do have a ways to still go in this country that's obvious but come on, Msn shouldn't be a haven for people to come on here and make racist remarks. Leave that ish at home. address the issue without being a racist. Its not hard.

Just a question tim, how diverse is the group of friends you have? Do you discuss this with them and share your honest opinions? I do and I have a very diverse group of friends, we don't all share the same opinions and we talk openly about stuff like this and don't have to say something racist even if we disagree with one another.

Really!!! Solving violence with violence is not the answer. In no way, shape, or form am I defending these girls. They behaved like savages and they deserve to be punished. Yeah, with your resolution, you've taken them out, but what going to come of the other people who go around bullying others for no apparent reason. There are so many cases at schools across the nation where kids who are bullied/beat up. Some of these bullies are as young as ten years old. Are you going to put a bullet in the back of their heads too? Please, think beyond your emotions and suggest a more effective strategy like starting an anti-violence panel for individuals with special needs or an organization that teaches and promotes tolerance in our society. Be a part of the solution and not apart of the problem.

This is such a sad commentary of this generation; lack of empathy, respect and any type of moral compass. The parents obviously did not instill any of these qualities on these, I am at a loss for what to call them. They are monsters that prey on a victim just for fun and can't even understand that what they did was wrong. A long prison sentence should give them sometime to reflect on this.

I'm still not sure how I feel about hate crime legislation. If you hurt someone, you ought to be made to pay, period. Still, it grates on me that someone is being attacked for simply who/what they are. As long as we have the hate crime statutes on the books, we might as well use them. They obviously hated this poor lady--or not. I don't care. Lock them up.

This is EXACTLY the same brutal mob/PACK mentality that drives otherwise good people to do terrible things. The same is true for the religious fanatics we see on the Internet murdering people in the name of God.

There is no validation for the brutal behavior of people when they attack other humans. These people are not redeemable since they have probably already been inside the jails and rehab centers. They are all probably on welfare or depend on grandma's check to survive, and buy cigarettes and beer.

I would suggest euthanasia, but that seems a little too much. However, until we make our laws more harsh and the jail experience less enjoyable, we will always see more and more of the deterioration of socially acceptable behavior.

I was a social worker and have been told many times that going back to jail is just a minor inconvenince and not a bad thing.

Perhaps if their opinions were different, they might decide to join society. The same is true for the third generation welfare culture we see so much of today. Children are raised to learn how to manipulate the government welfare process to a point where they never even consider a need to go to work or to get an eduction.

I reared two kids -- by myself. They are both upstanding citizens of their communities, as are their families. They have proved to be an inspiration to other around them. One has a presidential citation for his efforts. The other has earned awards and recognition on all sorts of projects. My grandkids are following in their footsteps. I'm not writing this to brag. I'm writing it to ask why this isn't true for all kids?

We can't blame being poor. I sold blood to put shoes on their feet. We can't blame being a single parent. I did it alone. We can't point fingers at the community. We've got similar backgrounds. Our area has some of the poorest schools in the state, but all of mine succeeded (kids and g'kids!). We can't place the scourge on handicaps. My grandson has autism, but he works to overcome it (and he is succeeding). Religion? We don't take part in organized religion. I didn't rely on the Dr. Spock book of gentle discipline; mine got spanked, fair and square. (Not abusively, although some argue that any spanking is abuse. But that's not the subject here.) However, my grandkids seldom face that punishment. They are doing fine, too. Even with the autism, my grandson has somewhat of a fan club for his organizational abilities. (That OCD came in handy!)

What is the difference? Instead of pulling together to be positive and constructive, these girls decided to be negative and destructive. Why? I really would like to know. I can say for mine it was my "great" parenting (yeah right), but that only goes so far. After a while, they choose their own paths. Mine chose (what I consider) a good and decent route. I still don't understand why these callous creatures went to the violent side. Will someone please explain this to me.

                                Zapper,

As a social worker, I saw that the parent made all the difference in the world. If the children are left to their own devices and not monitored by a leader type of parent, then all other effort is wasted. If a parent is addicted to drugs, or acohol, and is more cincerned with where the next cigarette is coming from, then the children will just follow suit.

I was also raised in poverty by grandparents and they had their hands full with me being the wild child I was. But they made sure I was accountable for every action, good or bad.

There are too many people out there that never learned to be accountable for their actions. Single mothers with multiple children that cannot even name the fathers. Too many fathers who want the milk, but won't buy the cow.

The children you raised need to thank you for being there for them. I would give anything to be able to do that for my grandparents, just to hug their necks once more and thank them for all the sacrifice they endured out of love for a child.

I want to thank you as well.

That is a VERY good question. Where are the MORALS of such esteemed men as Al and Jessie? Why are they not out speaking to the black folks and asking them to join the modern society. Ask them to go work, get off welfare, stop using drugs ( I hear Jessie's son is not considering quitting), and otherise perpetuating the deteroration of American society. I am not saying blacks are the only ones who are this low, but Jessie and Al make a grand stand when it comes to wanting to racially divide the nation. I am just wondering why such respected leaders within their community do not make some positive efforts to help the people?

Al & Jessie are only in the mix when they think it can bring them good press. In fact I don't even think of either of them until someone brings them up (which should be never really). Though they are black they don't want to be associated with this type of F-ckery. I don't blame them. These girls are going to be punished so what would Al or Jessie have to say about this, not a damn thing. If people would stop praising them then we wouldn't hear anything from them. They may have been relevant after MLK for a period but they've worn out their welcome for many black Americans, especially me. They only go to the "black community" to pose for photos and make speeches. If they don't go to make a change and be present for more than a photo op, sending donations isn't going to change anything. A lot of "Black leaders" don't even associate with community folk after their agenda is fulfilled.

And Lazarus, I loved you up until ...

Then I loved you again. lol.

This is were the government needs to be drug testing people before payment of any form is sent out, if at all. When your unemployed you have to sign up each week for unemployment the same should stand for welfare. You need to prove that you've been searching for work and you unemployment and welfare funds should be derterminde by if you've been searching and had any successful leads. This would mean you're more likely to find a job (hopefully), and if you do the need for the assistance would be limited and/or cut off once you've acquired a position somewhere. I don't believe in hand outs.

Self accountability- you don't want to work? you want to drugs? "TEMPORARY (what its supposed to be temporary ASSISTANCE" Is NOT for you, and your not eligible. And you shouldn't be able to apply again for 3 months.

I didn't get any growing up...I watched my single mother hustle two jobs and try to sell Avon to make sure ends would meet. I know everyone isn't the same but listening to Al or Jessie isn't going to do anything for anyone. Jessie can't even make an impression on his son, enough said.
