I've seen a lot of things like this happen living in the Bronx and near Philadelphia- been going on forever. It does happen everywhere and anywhere, just happens more in certain area's among certain races. Teen gang fights usually occurred more among young black teens or hispanics than whites in NYC but some could say that is because of a higher population of a certain race in a certain area, which may or may not be true. Morality does not evolve. It must be taught thru example and nurtured. There was a program here that helped "adjudicated" youth. I was a member and mentored them. Many of them were "like" the ones in the article, between the age of 12 to 15.. this program being the "last chance" before jail.

Flame77...So here is my take on these females, I can't possibly call them young ladies. They are between 15 and 17 according to the article, and they managed a very savage beating on a woman who had no reasonable capacity to protect herself or even to advocate for herself after the assault. This in itself indicates that these females have absolutely no capacity for empathy or sympathy and are void of any morality. Perhaps it was bad parenting. Perhaps they suffered abuse at home or in the streets or in school...who knows and at some point society has to draw a line. At some point children grow into adults and find that they do not have to emulate what they themselves have been exposed to because they do know there are places within their reach where morality is valued above imposition of force.

I have no idea if this is where these girls are...without knowing more I would believe so because they operated in a pack. How to you redeem someone who is so depraved that they beat a handicapped woman with no remorse.

We can blame the parents all day long and perhaps there is something to that but based on the lunacy of the behavior it is probable that these females stopped accepting family guidance or structure long before this incident. I would believe, again without more information, that this group of females abandoned their family unit long before this instance for the gang or pack. I would believe that they only use their family for a place to sleep, source of food and whatever other tangibles their parent or parents provide like cell phones, transportation and clothing. I would also venture to guess that each parent saw this coming and had no clue of how to stop the disaster train their children were driving off the cliff.

It seems sad and callous but at this point these females need to accept the adult consequences of their behavior. No purpose would be served by juvenile detention or remediation and release at 18. Their actions were deliberate and calculating and they cannot be trusted to be released only to influence the next group of young girls that wish to join their pack.

As for your question I personally believe that morality is absolutely taught at home and in Church and some civic endevors. If the values at home do not match what is taught at church or civic endevors than we will loose some young people to a confused, mixed, message. So based on that yes morality must be reinforced at school or it will just confuse the message further.

The other part to that is if children do not feel fulfilled at home or receive reinforcement of positive behavior they will seek out other who will positively reinforce any behavior regardless of the message. The whole pack mentality of , as a group we are strong and we can make our own rules. If we become strong or big enough we can control others in our environment.

I wish it were that simple, but it’s not. You have to start with parents who have morals and values and unfortunately, we have a generation of adults - who were taught that morals aren’t that important and that what they want (finding oneself) is more important - raising the next generation. Kind of like learning to read or do math, children have be taught, they have to practice and they have to see the adults in their world modeling the behavior so they understand the importance.

Years ago, morals were taught in church, in school, at home, and in your neighborhood. Now, few people go to church, schools have been scrubbed clean of anything that looks like good morals and values out of fear that it will encourage a “Christian” mentality, a child’s home is most likely divided into two with the father being more ghost than man, and neighbors rarely speak to neighbors any more.

Studies have long shown that children who come from homes with an involved mother and father, do better than their counter parts who have only one involved parent. In my opinion, when young individuals find that they are to be parents, they need to be placed in classes (together) that teach parenting skills and stress the value of two parents and their equal responsibilities to the life they have created and those classes need to continue until graduation. Courts need to give fathers equal rights to their children and fathers need to exercise those rights religiously. Mom’s need to not only encourage, but facilitate the child’s connection to their father. (this assumes there has been no abuse)

Then parents whose children act out need to be held accountable along with their children. Just to note – being held accountable doesn’t always have to mean punishment. It could mean parenting classes and supervision until the parents have acquired better parenting skills.

Only then will morals being taught in schools be of value. Anything less and the home life will undo all that the school could have contributed.

She was attacked twice. That poor woman will most likely be terrified to even step outside her home again. It was a senseless, evil act by this gang and the punishment should fit the crime. What you are looking at is the culture of violence in the black community, and it isn't going to get any better. It is more of a case for sterilization. Not all poor people will neglect or abuse their children and not all middle class/wealthy people make fit parents.

If we required everyone to get licenses to parent, we could weed out many of the unfit parents BEFORE they start having and damaging children. I have to agree, this was ghetto. The thing is, no matter what environment you live in, it need not live within you if it is not positive. This isn't a racial thing. This is an economic thing. If you have a bunch of kids who were raised in an upper middle class, or upper class setting, they wouldn't be bullying with fists - they'd be doing like those kids on the bus did to the bus monitor. There is only one way to deal with someone like this and that is to incarcerate them now. However, because they are kids, and it was only assault, they won't get hard time. If they can move this out of juvenile court into adult court, THEN they will get what's coming to them - but I doubt that that will ever happen. Whatever they get will end at age 18. Perhaps it will be fortunate for them to get this lesson. They seem badly in need of an intervention an to be permanently seperated from each other. I hope at least a couple of them can turn their lives around, but there tends to be one leader in groups like this who is so damaged that there is little hope that they can be reached.

I reared two kids -- by myself. They are both upstanding citizens of their communities, as are their families. They have proved to be an inspiration to others around them. One has a presidential citation for his efforts. The other has earned awards and recognition on all sorts of projects. My grandkids are following in their footsteps. I'm not writing this to brag. I'm writing it to ask why this isn't true for all kids?

We can't blame being poor. I sold blood to put shoes on their feet. We can't blame being a single parent. I did it alone. We can't point fingers at the community. We've got similar backgrounds. Our area has some of the poorest schools in the state, but all of mine succeeded (kids and g'kids!). We can't place the scourge on handicaps. My grandson has autism, but he works to overcome it (and he is succeeding). Religion? We don't take part in organized religion. I didn't rely on the Dr. Spock book of gentle discipline; mine got spanked, fair and square. (Not abusively, although some argue that any spanking is abuse. But that's not the subject here.) However, my grandkids seldom face that punishment. They are doing fine, too. Even with the autism, my grandson has somewhat of a fan club for his organizational abilities. (That OCD came in handy!)

What is the difference? Instead of pulling together to be positive and constructive, these girls decided to be negative and destructive. Why? I really would like to know. I can say for mine it was my "great" parenting (yeah right), but that only goes so far. After a while, they choose their own paths. Mine chose (what I consider) a good and decent route. These girls come from majorly disfunctional homes. Their parents are in all likelyhood abusive toward them and each other if two are in the house. Or, single mom trolls the streets at night and brings home scum. The live in has repetitively sexually assaulted them, but Mom doesn't do anything because she needs him for her fix. When they get in trouble outside the home it is always someone else's fault like a teacher, or cop, or bus driver. Take your pick of any or all of these scenarios.

I taught high school, and more and more kids are coming from homes like this. Parents are that in name only.

When I was young, the fear (and I don't mean awe) of my parents and God kept me in line. Kept my buddies in line, too. The Constitution may point out that we have freedom OF religion; freedom FROM religion is killing us.

We raised our kids with both definitions of awe of God in our home and both of them have turned out great. I'm watching a family implode right now. White, educated well past BA degrees, professionals with a daughter who has determined that she will have sex with whomever she likes, drink and drug, you name it. They provided discipline, chores, curfews, fiscal responsibility (she didn't get everything she wanted-she was required to earn it through chores and saving her allowance). She is 17, and currently is living with white, Social Security scamming a$$ holes. They even started getting her to church on a regular basis from the age of 8, when she first started "acting out". She has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, and has refused to take her meds for over 60 days now. When she did live with them, they had to lock their bedroom door at night because of the threats she made. You ask why they didn't have her committed? Because there aren't enough beds at local mental facilities; because no one wants to pay for them. The state shut them down, and moved remaining patients far away. The parents are just worn out now.

The reason reason why I mentioned that the parents are white, and the scammers the girl is living with are white is for the bigot posters above. They should clean up their own back yard before they start assigning negative traits based on skin color.

Parents WILL pay all jail costs with monthly payments taken out of their pay/welfare checks until the cost is covered even if it is until they die.

Yeah, we had to watch the story about a 16-year-old here who struck and killed a 72-year-old woman while texting. Destroyed her and her car. The girl was sentenced lightly: probration, bracelet, only allowed out for school and work. This year, 17th birthday, she moved out of her parents' house and in with her boyfriend, quit work, and tried to quit school. The judge sort of threw the book at her: no more work, no more freedom, she can go to school but has to report to jail right after school and spend the night before the school bus picks her up at the jail for school the next morning. There was beautiful video of her crying and apologizing in the courtroom. Pfffffffftttttttt!!!!!! I wonder the judge these young animals face will be moved by tears. I certainly hope not!

Please, Please, PLEASE charge ALL of these animals as adults, give them the MAXIMUM sentences allowed and never let them out on parole. Ideally they should never be allowed back into society, although I imagine we'll have to wait for them to kill someone before that happens, and it surely will.
