Dallas County Sheriff
John David Mahaffey, 19, was arrested on charges he sexually assaulted another male student on the campus of Southern Methodist University.
A fourth-generation Southern Methodist University student accused of sexually assaulting another male student told the victim “you better not tell a soul” and later admitted the crime in a phone call recorded by police, according to a court document released Friday.
John David Mahaffey, 19, a sophomore finance major, has been suspended from the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and banned from the University Park, Texas, campus while the investigation into the alleged assault continues.
The incident happened late Saturday night.

An affidavit of probable cause filed by an SMU police investigator provides graphic details.
Mahaffey forced the other student to perform a sexual act on him, the officer said.
“Victim stated ‘NO’ and ‘STOP’ several times but felt intimidated and physically forced into compliance,” the affidavit said.
The following day, the student went to police and agreed to make a recorded phone call to Mahaffey, police said.

“During the phone call, the victim told the defendant, ‘You know I didn’t want to do that?’ The defendant replied, ‘I know you didn’t, but we have to say it was consensual or lawyers, parents, and the school will be involved.’”
According to police, the alleged victim was attacked twice – once in a campus parking garage and again near the fraternity.
Mahaffey, of Springfield, Mo., is a Hunt scholar, a student senator, a scholarship committee chairman, and an officer on SMU's Inter-fraternity council, according to the university website.

According to an article last year in SMU's student newspaper, the Daily Campus, his great-great grandfather was a member of SMU's founding committee and one of its first professors and his grandmother, father and two aunts also were students.
SMU released a short statement, confirming the arrest, and saying Mahaffey is “temporarily banned from campus pending further investigation."
Debbie Denmon, a spokeswoman for the Dallas County District Attorney’s office, said Friday that the case probably will be referred to a grand jury in the next few weeks.
Mahaffey was released from the Dallas County jail on $25,000 bond. He did not return a phone call seeking comment.

I am not sure what makes this newsworthy - that he is from a prominent family, that that attack was male-on-male, that it was at a religious university?
Women are (sadly) attacked by male classmates (well-connected and otherwise) on college campuses at an alarming rate, yet it rarely makes the news outside of local papers (and often not even locally).
The alleged perpetrator will get off. It happened in Texas, and he comes from a prominent family. End of story.
I am wondering if the victim's family is also "prominent." Otherwise, I don't know if the victim's life would have been so "valuable" to report this (based on the media's sense of worth) if he had been from an impoverished family. The victim was brave to report this incident - since I believe this has gone on for hundreds of years at most universities....unreported due to the male code of "honor." Perhaps the alleged perp felt that he was "entitled" to partake of the goodies he encountered on campus. Anyway, I really believe that there is WAY more to the story. Perhaps ex lovers? Think about it.
A prominent male raped another male on a religious university campus not once but twice in Texas... that's what makes this newsworthy... or do you not believe a multiple rapist should have news articles about them?
I get the point you were (poorly) trying to make, but saying one rape story isn't newsworthy because others didn't get in the news is frankly just stupid.
oooo
That bible thumpers are likely to be hypocritical rapists falls into the "dog bites man" category of news stories.

Scum like these NEVER reform. They will be morally bankrupt scourges on society for life. Defiant??? Why isn't there a way to determine punishment based on the psychological make-up of those determined guilty? In this case, perhaps stoning.

Has nothing to do with Ghetto. They are evil period. Stop grouping people. There are some great people who live in the Ghetto. These just happen to be some that are waaaay past being of any intelligence. Just plain ignorant, evil, people. Whoever said the devil don't have children on this earth, must not have met these ladies.

Can't they be euthanized? I mean, we do it to other dangerously vicious animals when they prove themselves willing to harm people, so why not these vile creatures?

They will probably be mothers soon so they can beat their own kids. Ugly gang of stupid good for nothing girls. I'm not like this usually but to beat a woman up for fun? I'm glad they were dumb enough to record it. Saves the prosecution some leg work. Enjoy jail girls. And please don't have kids. You probably would beat them. I've seen some mothers be pretty ugly to their kids.

What scum. This is why a certain portions of the American population should be sterilized. These bottom of the barrel idiots should not be albe to reproduce. Who does a thing like this!?!??!!!! I feel so bad for the victim. These morons should be punished to the maximum penalty allowed and then some. Let's see how "hard" they are after they get sent to prison and forced to eat Large Marge's tuna taco special.

It's never "newsworthy" to some, when a white male commits a crime. But read the above posts from a different story. What an amazing difference.
Of course, this sadistic creep is a "legacy"...the white male affirmative action that get incompetents into good schools; and, that they have no desire to discuss while complaining about how discriminated against they are.
Wants to know, if you read you would know that prior to this he was by all accounts an exemplary student, so I doubt he is just here because he is a legacy.
It says he is a "Hunt scholar". That means that the Hunt family..SMU graduates who run their own scholarship program...chose to give him money to go to school. They probably know his family; it says nothing about his ability.
So we should only report on man on woman crimes and never give attention to male victims?
Well, at least he picked on someone who could fight back, unlike some coaches we know.
I guess he just got done watching the scene from "The Exorcist" where the demon says "Stick your....".....
and couldn't wait to try out his new movie learned skills.
Its getting to where U cant be a Prominent family member any where nowa days. If you get off with something is is because your family got you off. If you get prosecuted it is because they didn't want people to think you family got you off.
It would appear that he is adept at getting himself off.....with or without other people's permission.
What a stupid Daggot. Discraced his family and now sits in jail. He can get all the pole he wants now but I suspect he will now be the catcher pursue-ee.
myopinion-13: the latter two facts are more important, the former not so much. Male-on male [sexual] assaults at colleges of all persuasions happen with astonishing regularity but is never reported.
The preyed-upon often defer to the "Guy Rule" or more commonly "Boys will be boys" or "what happens at the fraternity STAYS at the fraternity" to not report abuse. Or, perhaps more often, they feel embarrassed or shameful about what what was perpetrated upon them.
The fact that the victim reported the assault immediately makes it at least semi-newsworthy, if only for the fact that others who read the story and have experienced similar abuse can [hopefully] report without embarrassment or shame or retribution or ridicule.
And I agree with you about female students being more frequently attacked, and that in itself is deplorable. But some men also suffer, and often without a supportive network.
Peace!
Unfortunately true of both male and female victims of sexual assault.
This type of thing happens to women in college campuses everyday, but many times it goes unreported. Sounds like the victim in this case had been attacked twice as had enough. It's sad that this guy had so much going for him and apparently thinks he is invincible. We will see what happens with the allegations. In the case of campus crime I would always skip the school and go directly to the police.
Oh, little spoiled brat goes down. I didn't have time to do anything but work 40 hours a week and go to school and study the rest of the time. Thanks Mom & Dad I could have been creating havoc on the campus instead.
The definition of "attacked" can vary widely. And then there's always the possibility of one guy wanting to get back at this guy for another reason. The easiest thing to throw around these days are false or very exagerated complaints of sexual misconduct. That doesn't mean it didn't happen here, but the "victim" has to prove that he's a victim and not just say it.
Well, since the police have the "Attacker" on tape admitting the "Victim" was not a willing participant I'd say that the "Victim" has proven his allegation.
Proud dem sure sounds like a good ol' boy to me.
Just for clarity, I'd point out that the taped conversation (as has thus far been released to the public) would also fit a scenario wherein the Fraternity brother was hazing a potential OR new brother. In that instance, it's possible that the hazing involved performing a sexual act on the "attacker". In that case, the "attacker's" response seems to fit. The fact that the victim says he didn't like it isn't the same as saying he doesn't want to perform the act AND the " we have to say it was consensual or lawyers, parents, and the school will be involved." comment from the "attacker" would fit. Notice that without knowing he was being taped, he didn't specify the police as someone who would be involved. That, at least, suggests to me that he thought what happened wouldn't involve police regardless. Sounds alot like hazing talk to me.
That being said, there is the quote from the affidavit which says the "victim" said "no" and "stop". That seems pretty cut and dried IF the events actually played out that way. It IS possible that the "victim" expected a gentler "assault" and got a rough one instead so he's getting some payback.
Just posin' possibilities...
At least, that's how it works in your house, huh Donnie? What's the matter, your ass chaps in the wash?
Because rape is OK if it's just hazing?
Sounds like Lush Dimbulb's definition of waterboarding.
I just read another story that stongly suggests that If the victim is telling the truth, this guy did commit a sexual assault. Mr. M. apparently made a recorded comment telling the victim not to get lawyers and the police involved. That's what lawyers and the police are there for. If he did the crime, he may have to do the time.
And these frat members are acting as if they are shocked by this type of behavior?
I was in a greek club and lived off campus. There is no way I knew everything that went on nor would have I if I had lived in the greek house. And the article doesn't make a point whether either lived on/off campus.
Quit lumping everyone into one nice and neat pile to fit your limited and bias viewpoint.
LOL
Same club Sandusky was in.
Greek club (i.e. frat) = closet homosexuals.
Thank you sir.....may I have another......
Says the college chest team members.
I would expect something like this from a Sigma Chi but not from a Sig Ep.
Barf, so you think one frat house is above any crime? Please get real.
The perp's facebook page says that his favorite musical interests are Led Zeppelin's "In through the out door" album and The Doors single "Back Door Man"
LOL, blew Mtn Dew out my nose. Thanks for the BURN!
The true Entitled Class the 1% thinking they can do with the Serf's as they please....and you better not say a thing..
great- you have bought into the political spin that the 1% is the enemy of the 99%. The rich are not know for raping people - the poor are.
I'll bet you are 800 pounds. I'm assuming you are in the bottom 1% and living off someone in the 32% range. Get a job and earn your own money cheetah, and you won't have to break everything in your life down by income. And wash your fur. Phew!
So the other guy is probably gay but doesn't realize it yet. I guess he will now. D'OH!
I'm sure the perp's grandfather is spinning in his grave.
If he hadn't realized it, it would never have happened twice.
I think the true "Entitled Class" is a whole lot larger than 1%. It's anyone who thinks they can say horrendous things, do horrendous things on the level of mean all the way to criminal. Harassment, of any kind, men who beat their wives and children, bosses who abuse their staff, staff who pretend to be stereotypical Native Americans as a diss to someone (sorry couldn't help myself), men who think they can say truly raped women never get pregnant from the rape (he gets to belong to the dumber than an idiot class as well), people who lie, cheat and steal. All these people think they are entitled to "special rules" that exempts them from the rules all the other people have to follow. And although it isn't just wealthy people who have this sickening "entitlement" attitude, sadly, a great majority of them are subject to it. Greed and selfishness combined is just not a pretty thing.
Why in the hell doesn't sexually assualted women get this kind of attention!
Jofer- they do. i see it every night on the news. you and a few others trying to make this something its not. It will not get you laid- pretending to stand up for women and all.
So we should never report male victims. This past month I've seen at least ten stories on female victims. Sorry if in your world, females are always the victims. The real world differs.
Needs to do a stint in Afghan if anyone does.
That's the right on man, you said it all.
The whole story sounds fishy to me. Mahaffey does not look strong enough to me to force another man to do anything he did not want to do. There must be more than meets the eye here.
Great example of those that think they can do what they want as they are the elite and so powerful. Wait until Mr. Cool gets to lock up and Bubba has him singing a whole new tune.
No mention of weapon, no mention of threat of violence.
Something is not right.
sounds like a lovers quarrel.
he won't go to jail
someone wants some money.
So you don't think it's "legitimate", is that right mofo? LOL.... your 'still is done a brewin'.. best go get ur fiddles.
On a side note...the perp has announced his intention to change his name to a symbol (a chocolate starfish) , and from now on he will be referred to as the "Artist formerly known as Cornholio"
So,you slippery devils.lIs it attempted pederasty or homosexuality?
Sounds like this guy has all the right qualities to be a republican representative.
It was a democratic president that used his position to get an inturn to do the same thing. Cheap shot to call rapist republicans. Sexual predators are on all sides of the political spectrum. Howver a matter of fact: most people in prison are democrats.
Sounds like you're unable to distinguish between consensual sex and rape.
Sandusky's a Democrat, we'll just ignore that.
Correction! Whether Republican or Democrat, Sandusky's political party preference is null and void!!
In what sense is this queer "prominent"? A gay rapist from a family tradition of gay rape?
Bigot much?
