Police say the New Jersey teen who tweeted that someone was in her home, asked her followers to call 911 and then disappeared likely left her house voluntarily.
Kara Alongi gained thousands of followers after asking people on Twitter to call 911 on Sunday because an intruder was in her home. She then went missing, sparking fears that she may have run into foul play. People re-tweeted her message and #helpfindkara trended on the social network.
A preliminary investigation suggested that no foul play was involved in her disappearance. Investigators later discovered that someone had called a local taxi company at about the time the tweet was posted.
Police say the driver who responded to the Alongi home positively identified the 16-year-old girl as the fare he picked up. He told police he drove her to the Rahway train station.
Police Chief Alan Scherb said her apparent disappearance remains a missing person's investigation.
"Kara might feel that she will be in trouble if she comes home after this scare and causing a panic," Scherb said in a statement. "At this point, all everyone cares about is seeing her safe and at her house where she belongs."
Police responded to Alongi's home on Hall Drive in Clark Sunday evening. A person who answered the phone at the girl’s home quickly said ‘No comment” and hung up.
"She is currently still missing, but we are confident she left voluntarily," Scherb told Patch. "No abduction, no foul play. We are investigating this as a missing runaway juvenile.”
On Sunday, Kara Alongi, 16, tweeted that someone was inside her house, asking people to call 911. Now, her parents are staying quiet and police are saying the New Jersey teen is missing. NBC's Katherine Creag reports.
Twitter users worldwide tweeted messages of good will @KaraAlongi overnight as her initial post asking for help circulated. Many said they were frightened to think about what could have happened to her.
Others were skeptical about her pleas for help, pointing out a tweet that allegedly popped up on Alongi's account that said: "Why is everyone saying I'm missing? I was jkin haha" and was deleted a short time later.

Attention whore....media these days. Or should I say people with media... oh my. *facepalm*
Until the girl is found and the complete report is made, I would reserve comments.
What if it turns out she was taken and the kidnappers did the update ?
If she is OK, then she really does need to do that old fashioned thing, make a phone call.
She called a cab.
They've already talked to the cab driver, he identified her as the person he took to the train station.
I'm pretty confident she didn't get kidnapped. Why would anyone tweet for other people to call 911 instead of calling 911 themselves?
Why would anyone Tweet at all ??????????????
Nice story...could have turned out much worse. Glad there was a happy ending.
Funny, one of the girls I lived near and went to school with who was bullied and teased for being skinny and tall...she grew up, filled out and was simply gorgeous...made a career in modeling!
This is still very serious. The question is who was at the train station to meet her? She's young, pretty, troubled, and naive=great danger. I hope this ends well...
good point Sharktopussie, if she is too stupid to know how to call 911 then we have thinned the herd nicely. OMG, what's the Number for 911?..please twit back the number of 911, i don't know it, please someone is in the house....ugh..
Wow, really? Your an idiot!!
The girl is still missing. That's not happy nor is it an ending.
Blonde Alert!!
"At this point, all everyone cares about is seeing her safe and at her house where she belongs."
And once all know she is safe at home..all will line up and..Slap the chit out of her for being a idiotic JERK!!!
Now she can go for good..all others don't give a damm.
Bueller?............Bueller?............Bueller? Did they print up the Save Kara shirts yet? The sad (funny) things is that since she's pretty, young, and blonde, she'll make a killing on the talk show circuit, along with monetary donations for her mental treatment.
@ Sana Powers
Don't call people idiots when you don't know when to use you're or your.
Girl who cried "wolf!" ?
How about we all reserve judgement until we know what actually happened. Could be she had a falling out with her parents(who knows what kind of people her parents are), could be she is a fool (or just a hormonal teenage girl), or the cab driver needs to be questioned a bit more (check her phone records to see if she actually called a cab, or if he showed up on his own and she never really went to the train station). We know nothing at this point, so before rushing to conclusions, please, have a little bit of patience and self control just this once.
LMAO you do not think the police already did that? The police already said...."we feel confident she is a run away", they wouldn't say that unless they had checked those things. YOU know nothing at this point, US know whats going on based on common sense and what the cops are saying.....thank goodness you are not a detective.
The sad part is now someone could harm her and they would not know unless they find a body. I do hope this turns out fine though. I'll reserve any further comments until more info comes out.
"There is SOMONE in my HOUR ecall 911" Really? She can't even spell house or someone. If something was really wrong, why didn't she call 911 or even her parents? Oh my Somone in my hour,I can't call 911 maselve become I'm to buzzy on the cumputer. Sounds more like an a way for here to run away than an intruder or hoax.
Clearly the purpose of a COMMENTS section is lost on you two....
If you really have an issue with what you are reading may I suggest you speak with NBC news/Newsvine on disabling the comments section until stories have progressed to the point of completion?
Or (even better) DON'T LOOK AT THE FORUM THREAD!!! DUH!
One less dumb blonde-so who really cares? She did this to herself. Guess she was trying to leave a trail of breadcrumbs, Too bad the wind was blowing.. Stupid idiot.
kinda sounds like an air head needs a refill.....at least thats what i hope............
Girl who cried "Wolf!" ?
"Why is everyone saying I'm missing? I was jkin haha"
Oh yeah? Douche...
Great comments from the cold-hearted idiots. This girl obviously has some head problems and she does need help. Male commenters are always such big azzholes. S.T.F.U. and mind your own business!
and if this is a hoax while there's a real abduction that needs real help and the law is busy playing stupid with some idiot will you feel the same way?
name a teenager who doesn't
Yep its a gender thing, you obviously never read anything from fiesty, berverly, jody, and her cronies on first read.
Like YOU just did?...pot meet kettle
but like i said i hope its all just a bored teenage stupidity thing...
"This girl obviously has some head problems" ...and you know this how?
You are not the arbiter of what is anyone's business.. I AM! You need to stop minding what we are minding...
hsart-Are you a male by chance?
I'm not gonna, and you can't make me! Bwahahahaha
So you attack and use names why? I would like to know where you got your psychology and psychic degree from since you figured out from this article "This girl obviously has some head problems...." Also if you could tell the rest of us how you have the ability to distinquish sex by the posters, can you also get race, religion, creed, sexual preference, education level, political party, age, what color they like best or is it just male/female that you can do?
LMFAO - I gave denver bill a Vote (that's a first), cherish it big fella.
I'll never wash my keyboard again.
@gtouch or is it g-spot? Where does one get a "psychic" degree?
hsart stfu are you some kind of feminist, cause we really need more of those around. Not.
Do you know how many young men (and older men's) lives have been messed up by these "poor, misguided young women" who obviously are crying out for help? So, when they back themselves into a wall, they accuse some poor guy of abduction or rape, when all along, they had just run off with a boyfriend and didn't want to get in trouble for it - and some innocent guy goes to jail - all so the attention whore didn't have to face up to what she did.
I'm surprised they haven't attempted to track where these updates to her Twitter were made. And, well, hopefully she knows that she'll be disciplined for using public resources for this "silly joke".
shes a teenager they seldom think first.
When I was a teenager I wasn't stupid enough to do something like this. I certainly knew the danger and risk involved with calling 911 as a prank. All teenagers aren't stupid. This one happens to be.
I also would have never called 911 as a prank or joke as a teenager.
She did not call 911 though so not really sure she can get in trouble for that part.
She said there is someone in her "hour". Like maybe she is a time traveler or something.
she only had a minute..........................
Yes... and in her time, they make a lot of ecalls... I guess..
....and it was somone [sic]
It should be easy to tell if that's her typical spelling and grammar style, or if someone's playing with her phone to cover a crime.
BUT....SHE COULD HAVE CALLED 911 HERSELF, IF SHE COULD TEXT THAT BS.
But instead of calling 911, she called a cab to take her to the train station.
End of story.
This may be a silly question, but why tweet? Why not call 911 directly? That just doesn't make sense.
Tweet stresses attention! Duhhhh
maybe shes a bird.....it would appear after all she's a birdbrain..........:)
There is not much in this story that makes sense! Why report a story on a missing teenager who isn't missing? Verrrrrrrrrry slow news day apparently! Keep an eye out for the late breaking "watching grass grow" vs "watching paint dry" story!
i got a sawbuck on the grass..........
From what I got out of this poorly written article, the girl is missing, but authorities don't believe she was abducted. One comment noted tha she apparently called a cab and the cab driver has confirmed he took her to the train station.
If this girl is missing, and in trouble, i hope she gets help right away. If, this is just a silly teenager's prank, i hope she gets the mental help she clearly needs. And then she can get the disipline she clearly needs.
The police say she left willingly? She could have been forced, and not leave any sign. Why the "no comment", and no answer from the home she lived in??? Makes one wonder? I want answers!
Did you see she rode in a cab and took off in a train! Doesn't sound forced some girl running away from home solo or with someone else, enough answers for me NTGAFAM
Teenagers..LOL, they dont think about consequences. The cops have already determined that there were no signs of her being forced out of the home.
She's probably hiding in her closet thinking, "Oh crap, why did I do that?" LOL
Someone quick, post that this is Obamas fault and get it over with.
ya just did ................good job..............
ONE thing i find disturbing here is;
so are you saying the cops didnt bother to check until AFTER the news called them? sure looks that way as someone answered the phone, yet the police state;
So obviousley they got in at some point.
course with a cell phone the call could have been made from anywhere, which of course would blow the whole someone is in my hour B.S. story.
wonder if we will get an update on this?......how about it, Katherine Creag, NBCNewYork?
Why would they check before that point? The dimwit never called 911. She only sent out a tweet.
No just poorly written. "police Chief..." one sentence.
"When NBC called the home..." next sentence.
They're saying that when the news station called the home whoever answered said no comment and hung up. After they talk about what the Chief commented on.
wow, she is a tasty little hottie!
..........seek help...............
"There is someone in my hour" - my first response to that tweet would have been WTH? I hope that she's okay but if it turns out she's pranking, then she needs to be taught a lesson about how crying wolf can be hazardous to your future health and to the health and safety of others.
Hour from spell check of hous Perhaps
Or house, Chad A? LOL
If, and I say if, this is a hoax the girl should be charged with a crime like making a false police report. A lot of people are concerned. It's one thing to make a false report when only the police are involved but to tweet it or use social media you have thousands of people involved. The Internet spreads stories, true or false, instantly. Few people bother to check the source of stories that get sent to the e-mail address and, like rumors, spread the news quickly.
Unfortunately Wade, she technically didn't make a police report. So she didn't file a false report. Although I do very much agree that she needs to be punished in some sort of way for the chaos she caused because of her stupidity. There is no reasonable explanation that she could give that would justify her actions. She's stupid to think that she could post something like that on a social media site and think that the police wouldn't find out what really happened. Being a dumb non-rational thinking teenager is not an excuse on this one either!
FOLKS, she called a cab about the same time she made that tweet.
The cab driver has identified her as the person he picked up, and took to a train station.
She's nothing but a semi-literate runaway.
Wow - hard to tell what is real here. It appears to be the work of a dis-enfranchised teen perhaps, but, I repeat, hard to tell. It will be interesting to find out exactly what happened here - if it turns out that this is a prank, she might very well be charged with reporting a false crime and the payback should be severe - wasted manpower and resources. Perhaps she was on something that challenged her ability to think straight (at least as straight as teens think today), but I don't know. If she is indeed the victim of a crime I pray for her safe return; if she is the perpetrator of making a false cry for help, then I pray she gets whatever punishment is deemed fit for that.
...
This is another example why a domestic drone system is necessary.
Obama / Biden in 2012.
...
Wow, wrinkles on her forehead and she's a mere teenager! The future doesn't look bright for her.
I noticed that too. I'm 46 and my forehead doesn't look anything close to that. Botox anyone? She needs it.
Hmm. I wonder if she did it as a prank, crying wolf so to speak. Then when she saw the reaction to it she kind of freaked and went away somewhere with a family member so they can figure out what to do.
If she did this as a prank after less than 3 months ago a real teen went missing and was found dead she needs to be charged with a crime. When you get on the internet and make statements you should be held accountable.
Seems like you'd have to be an adult to be able to call and book a cab ride on your own.
She's hot.
...and you are a pedophile.
Now how do you know how old ruckus is to call him a pedophile?
When I heard about this last night-something didn't 'smell' right to me. I turned to my husband after hearing this as said: "She left on her own. Why couldn't SHE just dial 911, herself??" It's so much simpler, and faster, to punch in THREE digits (or even 1 digit if you put 911 on your speed dial list) than texting a sentence (or, sort-of sentence in this case). Is texting the 'only' way these kids communicate these days? No TALKING on their phones? Just texting? Apparently this girl needs a whole lot of attention----and therapy; IF she is NOT in danger at all. I bet we will find out later that this girl is a spoiled brat who gets little to no supervision by parent(s).
I'm going with spoiled brat skank.
Why did she use Twitter instead of calling 911 herself? Maybe because she is a Twit..
