The times they are a-changing.
Who would have thought that Hollywood environmentalists would find themselves aligned with Persian Gulf oil barons?
But the strange politics of energy have managed to bring the greens into line with the OPEC-member United Arab Emirates on the issue of fracking.
"Promised Land" is a new film starring and written by Matt Damon and John Krasinski, based on a story by San Francisco-based writer Dave Eggers. In the film, Damon and actress Frances McDormand play a team that shows a rural town hard hit by economic decline, offering to pay big money for drilling rights.
Krasinski plays a local activist who leads the town into rebellion against the drillers, arguing that their plans would damage the local environment. To anyone who is familiar with the debates about fracking in, say, upstate New York, this will be a familiar story.
The more interesting twist here isn’t in the move — it’s in the movie’s creation. The film was produced “in association with” Image Media Abu Dhabi, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Media, as first reported by the Heritage Foundation. Abu Dhabi Media — which has never had a role in a major American film before — is wholly owned by the government of the United Arab Emirates, a small but extremely wealthy federation of absolute monarchies along the southern coast of the Persian Gulf.

The UAE has the world’s seventh largest oil reserves, according to the CIA Factbook. It is ranked ahead of Russia and just behind Kuwait in proven oil reserves. It is the fourth largest exporter of oil in the world. And, of course, it is a member of OPEC.
Very obviously, the UAE has an interest in slowing down the expansion of hydraulic fracking that has created an energy boom in the United States. A popular film — there’s even talk of it being an Oscar candidate — might give a boost to the opponents of fracking.
Although that’s not necessarily what will happen. There’s already a Facebook group formed by residents of the area in Pennsylvania where much of the movie was filmed who claim they were deceived about the filmmakers intentions.
“They filmed this movie in our backyard. They told us it would be fair to drilling. It’s not. We’re p*ssed,” the group complains.
No doubt news of the UAE’s involvement in the film will make backlash even more likely.

Not such a strange alliance. Just 2 morally bankrupt groups trying to protect their influence over americans.
peanut -- I agree with you. Thing is that BOTH of these groups are giving money for O'Bama's re-election campaign. That's just another reason to vote for anyone EXCEPT O'Bama. We don't want to give him 4 more years to complete the destruction of America. Like all Dictatorial Socialist, history has shown us what happens to Socialist rulers and their redistribution goals like O'Bama (Stalin & Mussolini). But Hollywood is just not based in reality just like the rest of California.
Free Speech only counts when you're protesting gay marriage or mocking muslims, eh?
Joe really? That's all you got? WOW
Please. Like both political parties aren't tied to significant campaign donors.
The problem with energy policies, like fracking, is they are short sighted. They don't satisfy the long term needs. As large as our planet is, it will one day run out of oil and we will have contributed to its degradation in the process.
My former mother-in-law remembers the kids running behind the DDT truck as it was spraying the grass down residential streets. How did THAT work out?
While fracking has it's own ecological problem, namely polluting ground water. The natural gas extracted is less polluting to burn and cheaper to burn than oil and way better than coal. Extracting coal devastates the land when using mountain top removal and that in turn devastates the streams and rivers. It burns very dirty. It is expensive to transport. Oil has polluting problems equal to coal and the additional problem is that much of the world strife is caused by who has it and who wants it. In a free society the free market should be able to choose which is better, cleaner and cheaper. With fracking that choice is not oil a 20th century fuel or coal a 19th century fuel. I am sorry if you make your living from coal but the market is making coal like the 8 track player, yesterdays technology. I come from a coal mining back-round myself. My grandfather, all my uncles, and my father in his younger years were all coal miners in the Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. At one time there were 100K steel workers in South Chicago. Now it is just polluted empty fields. Things change.
The Right-wing neo-con's in the US,always count on Americans knowing little about world history. That's the only way they get away with the stupid remarks they make.Anyone knowing history knows that Communists and Muslims working together is like saying Jews and Nazis were working together. The Communists and Muslims were always opposed to each other. As were Stalin and Mussolini. But if the right-wingers just throw out those names they figure some no-nothing's will agree with them. I've heard over and over in this election them saying that Obama was a communist and a Muslim in the same breath.I just want to shake my head at anybody falling for that BS.
JoeB: That's more than a little weak. If you believe there's any possibility fracking can damage the enviroment or water table it's hard to blame Obama instead of the party that want's to elimnate regulation.
Joe, you need to go back to school and this time pay attention. The president was elected. Not a dictator. He isn't a socialist any more than you are. Mussolini was a Facist NOT a socialist. He was part of the anti socialist movement in Europe.
The two most socialist countries in Europe have a higher standard of living than the U.S. They have a superior health care system. They have a greater chance to move their citizens from middle class to upper class.
In other words, their socialist democracy is doing better than our socialist democracy. Yeah, that's right. If it weren't for socialism you wouldn't have highways, sewers, public utilities, public waste removal. social security, medicare, police, fire/rescue, a military, public works, the list goes on. These are all socialist things because we pay into them as a social group for the good of all. That is socialism.
I thought you guys liked free enterprise, open markets? These are 2 groups that have teamed up, you know like Bain and AIG, Chase and Wells Fargo, Ozzie and Harriet.
pullmyfinger, socialism also means giving up your all rights to be subject to the socialist republic. And if you dont, it can result in imprisonment. So that means no protesting, freedom to speak, or have ideas that can benefit humanity unless the socialist government approves. That means complete censorship and subjection to socialist republic rule, you might be okay with that. I enjoy my freedoms. The right to believe in God, and talk about it to anyone I want to. And if I want to own a gun to protect my property and family, I can. And if I want to protest the wrong doing of the powerful Socialist people, also a possibilty in this country.
Note: The Pavilion, WY water was recently retested with nearly 0% trace amounts of benzene. I have read that other benzene claims in Texas were made because the test subjects were smokers who by nature of smoking have higher levels of benzene in them.
The scare tactics of the environmentalists don't always pan out like they want them to but you won't hear them admit to being wrong, no sir!
Lets expand our energy output and tell the Arabs that they can eat their oil when they complain that we aren't being such faithful customers anymore. They also will not be able to come here and bomb us because of a perceived wrongdoing on our part.
Why do we keep listening to these Hollywood Environmentalists? Do we really care what a group of bonehead actors think about stuff? If we keep giving in to environmentalists, we'll keep killing jobs over made up bs.
There must not be any good paying roles right now for Matt Damon. He can afford to pay $5.00 a gallon of gas so of course he's on the middle eastern oil producers side.Someday the middle east oil will dry up and the good old US of A will be loaning them money.
Just strikes me funny that all those in NYC who screamed blue bloody murder when they had no power to heat their homes, no gas to cook with, no (or reduced amounts [brownouts]) electricity to run their big screen TVs because the local power company cant get gas to its power stations, are the first to criticize the methods that can bring them a cheap affordable product that will fulfill all the above.
The form committees and pressure group, but at the end of the day big oil/gas/power generators will win, passing the cost of fighting these sheep and band wagon jumpers onto everyone else.
No it's not. You can't weigh benefits without taking into account the cost. What benefit does the gas provide if you contaminate your largest supply of fresh water in the process? What does it ultimately cost you in the end? That's the same type of reasoning that a drug addict uses.
The Heritage Foundation is a bunch of reich wing loons. And non New Yorkers should mind their own damned business, because unless you are a citizen of the that state, you should have no say in how they chose to manage their natural resources.
Sounds like you don't mind being told a lie, as long as "outsiders" don't try to tell you what to do. Interesting that you don't mind letting Hollywood and the UAE tell you what to think.
mike christain -- you are absolutely right!! If New Yorkers want to sell their land for a few pennies on the dollar, destroy their drinking water and destroy their local environment -- that's their right. After all they can afford to have their drinking delivered and MAY restore s small fraction of the destruction caused by fracking, they got all that money from the "Fracking Corporations". I by no way agree with everything environmentalist preach about (and actually think that holding-up or canceling projects of a spider or snail - it just plain stupid) but I think they have just about hit the nail on the head with "fracking". But if that's what New Yorkers want, that's their decision and no one else's. But don't look my way for drinking water, you can't pay enough.
I see so if you don't live in a particular location that's affected 'mind your own business'. We keep saying the same thing about the wolves here in the northwest but that doesn't keep nosy busybodies out. Just sayin...
HEY JOE.....that is not what us New Yorkers want so take your troll butt out.
I think Joe's point is, go ahead, frack to your hearts content. But when you need to bring in clean water because the ground water is polluted beyond filtration, find it somewhere else and don't drive up the cost of the water for people who didn't want it.
Here's an idea. How about the New Yorkers pass a law that says the people that live near the fracking MUST use groundwater for their households and should a well need to be drilled, the fracking company MUST pay for it?! This way you can have your fracking and your polluted water all to yourself.
Do you remember the scene in Eric Brockovich when they are sitting with the lawyers and they say the water is brought in special just for them from the town? Nobody would drink it. That's how your town will be. Don't be shortsighted.
JoeB's against Obama but opposes fracking. Interesting.
Mike christian,I didn't realize that New York was a separate country from the rest of the U.S.It's not citizen of New York,it is resident of New York. That is unless New York is ceding from the U.S.Do you know something that the rest of us don't?As American citizens we can all voice our opinions and we should all be involved in what goes on in states other than our own.Don't you agree Mike?
Peanut Gallery has it right but I'd like to add the OPEC nations are also looking out for their bank accounts.
Who would of thought! If we don't drill for oil here, we have to keep buying it from them. Environmentalists, my foot! Pure and simple capitalism...not that I have anything against capitalism...let's just call it what is...and the folks in Hollywood will pander to whoever has the $$$$$...once again...capitalism. Gotta love it...the thing they rant and rave against most...they are!
The reoccurring theme in the news...don't trust those Hollywood types when it comes to full disclosure or honesty.
So how many degrees of seperation are between Matt Damon and Nakoula Basseley Nakoula?
Best part of the story was the people who let their town be used:
You see Mr. Mayor, we're just going to be filming here and we'll put the town in a good light. You took the money, deal with it.
Also, we really should be getting all of our information from that bastion of honesty, The Heritage Foundation./s
So exactly what form of energy does the so called green support????
Just google it. There is not a single form of energy that has not been challenged by them.
Wind? oh no , bugs & birds. Water? oh no , fish migration.Solar? lizards homes. Nuclear? too dangerous. Coal? too dirty. Oil?spills & dirty. Natural gas? fracking & earthquakes.
Exactly what form of power, do they accept for turning on the lights???
Scar - and the answer is: None. They dont' care because if you examine the extreme core of the environmentalist you will find an individual who thinks that anything people do to the earth is wrong. Their ultimate vision of a perfect world would be one with the human race extinct.
Hot Air.
I think a typical environmentalist is one who is never happy with anything regarding energy or pollution.
Nothing is good enough, even if they got their utopia, they would still find something to whine about.
I bet none of those hollywood types Gave a rat's behind about the environment when they were trying to get into the movies and score their multi-million dollar deals. Now that they have their pockets full of cash they want to keep the rest of us poor so they further the socialist form of government they so adore.
If Persian Gulf oil barons and Hollywood is against it.....I'm all for it! If any Hollywood type says they are just trying to tell a story it's pure BS...they are out to make money plain and simple.
And Persian Gulf oil barons are upset.....yeah they see their "sole supplier" status being threatened...You think their methods of extracting oil that they sell to us is friendly to the environment? Think again!!
Remember back at the kyoto conference, the saudi's wanted compensation if the world reduced its use of oil. And I thought Chutzpah was a hebrew word.
And people wonder why the US refused to sign onto the Kyoto accords. They were and still are a joke.
Yes,Its money that matters....and you know that its true....My son is a "Snubber",drilling gas wells in North Dakota. Those young folks are paying with all they have so we,as a country do not have to bow down to the oil barrens...Keep it up guys, mabey someday we won't have to be involved with them...Wouldn't that be great? Thanks
Quite a few landowners in NY get a fat check form the fracking companies. It makes it a lot easier to put up with all the inconvenience of drilling.
If a fat check is involved I'd let them frack in my backyard but the greenies in California would probably have me thrown in jail for treating my property as I saw fit.
As someone who lives in Northeast PA, I do not have a problem with fracking, or drilling for that matter, we need to become dependant on our own resources, and this is the way to do it.
Hollywood knows nothing about this and as for the Persian Gulf Oil Barons, they are only worried about their own pockets getting filled, by Americans who consume, consume, consume.
It is so enlightening when holly-weird exposes its friends! Corruption swapping spit with corruption.
Controversial! makes this movie a hit and a money maker right off the top. Where is it written that Hollywood doesn't or shouldn't like to make money? I'm waiting.
I find it amusing when right wingers bad mouth Hollywood and trip all over themselves with excitement when one of them say...., Clint Eastwood, decides to speak on their behalf. Or when one of the "Hollywood types" like Ron Reagan happens to be one of their few heroes. Yep, Hollywood blows, unless somebody from there decides to give you the time of day.
It's in the frakking ship!
"We’re p*ssed,” the group complains."
Well, make your own darned movie.
I don't understand all the objections to importing foreign fossil fuel. You mean the tremendous cost in lives and treasure, the lost sons and daughters slaughtered to secure this fuel while propping up dictatorships that then turn on us? The bloated military used to force into subjugation any "tribe" that the dictators want eliminated.
What, We the beacon of democracy, who constantly demonstrate our "tolerance of dictators" just as long as they sell their oil to us, and are thustly declared "good dictators" vs. "bad"
The environmentalists are nothing more that luddites. If their policies were allowed to run full course, we would all be back living in caves.
Matt Damon, like so many others in Hollywood should stick to what they know best, playing at make believe.
If you are anti-war, then I suggest you suck it up and understand that the best way to demonstrate that is to support domestic fuel exploration, and the hazards it presents.
Or do you wish to continue to foist that hazard onto someone elses child to secure your energy for you?
Well said and sane, vs. the insanity of the wacko asurdly anti-petro wackos.
If this article isn't a bunch of HOGWASH! These people donate some of their money, because they have lots left over. They donate some of their time, because they have lots of leisure time. And none of that disguises the fact that these people use more petro products, energy, and natural resources than almost anyone for their travels, numerous mansions, and globe-trotting play time. They are all hypocrits who feel guilty for their materialism so they try to placate us with this environmental caring BS. When DiCapprio lives in a 1200 sq. foot hovel like many of the loggers he has put out of work, then I'll listen to him. Otherwise he should shut his moneychanging mouth.
you guys do know that the second bigest water table in the WORLD!!!!! thats right the hole world is in NY and that how showen time and time again that it destroys water tables drilling this way. i could care less about ether of my choses for the white house as voting for the lesser evil is still evil. but what i do care about is water. do some fact checking on what im saying, you know they are already saying water is worth more then gold now. just think in 10 years what it will be worth
Of course the middle east doesn't want us to use our own resources. As for Hollywood it's just stupid.
it's not about not using our own resources. It's about an obsession with the dirtiest most environmentally destructive methods people choose, and in the end that's driven by easy profits for a very very very few. You would sue one of your neighbors for causing the same types of problems in your community, but you rally behind the very rich and actually encourage them to do the same to you. Find one of these rich guys who wants to live around and be exposed to the same things they try to intice the general public into living with!
If these dictators dont get their oil money, they'll have to tax their population who will then want a vote about how its spent. No representation without taxation. ;) Btw, same concept applies to foreign aid-dependent countries.
as anyone who's been there can attest, Fracking is Awesome! Why stop it
Regardless of how you feel about their financial contributors, with all of the news about contaminated water and even earthquakes being caused by their water/chemical injections into the ground, when is it that any of you people will consider the facts? I guess when you have to deal with the consequences first hand. And then you'll be blaming the government for not informing citizens of the dangers and not better regulating the industry. It would only be speculation if you didn't do exactly that every time, but it's a well established pattern. All of you who can't think one day forward into your own well being should all move together somewhere and drill and frack to your hearts content, and be forced to stay in the environment that you make unlivable.
Earthquakes in Texas? Not until we started fracking. There were three just this last weekend, but fracking is harmless.....
I remember some earthquakes there back in 79. Well before major fracking. They're just not big enough for anybody to bother with unless you've got people trying to turn them into propaganda.
We had small earthquakes here in PA way before any gas drilling was even thought of. These people are looking for any excuse to try and make us a dependant on foreign oil.
Of course the United Arab Emeritas doesn't want us drilling for NATURAL GAS, it will shrink their wealth, of which they have too much anyway!
I'll bet the corrupt Republican OIL & FINANCIAL corporate MONARCHY is in on it too!
Nothing but UNCONTROLLED CAPITALISTIC GREED of which there is NO END IN SIGHT!!!
If you write it down correctly and work the numerology you'll find that OPEC is a creative anagram for: Satan.
"Synonym" works for me. ;)
