Thanks Steve I did check lots more info on FOX. It stated that it was a known drug route and that they specifically went on horseback to check sensors that had been tripped along the border. And many other specifics on the wounds received etc.

Operation 'Wide Receiver' was conducted during the Bush Administration with the full co-operation of the Mexican government and all weapons were equipped with tracking devices to allow surveillance of their locations on the southern side of the border. The program was ceased when the tracking devices were no longer viable due to dead batteries or discovery by the people in possession of the weapons.

Living in Phoenix, Arizona, I can't help but wonder if, in some part, it is retaliation for the young Hispanic mother of five, who was here legally, that was shot and killed yesterday by a Border Patrol agent in California (Border Patrol Agent was in civilian clothes and undercover.)

My sincere condolences go out to the families who have lost loved ones in this issue that has been ongoing for decades.

There is far too much awareness of this problem for those of us that have lived here a long time. I can't place the blame on one US President, or another one. It is unrealistic as it has been an ongoing problem for far too long.

Bubby's Grandpa - Sure, I just have enough braincells to realize that the only way you're going to stop illegal immigration is to either make Mexico a place they want to stay, or make the US a place not worth coming to.

The problem of course being: We as a nation don't have enough money and resources to do the former, and doing the latter is going to make the country hell for nearly ALL Americans and not just the illegal immigrants.

Why? Because harsher punishments for the illegals themselves is not an effective deterrent. The only way to truly stop it is to make the country so impoverished that it's simply not worth coming here. Out of the Woods: Where do you propose we get the money and manpower to militarize all our borders and coastlines?

Because if we "close" the Mexican border, they'll just come through the coasts. If we close the coasts, they'll go all the way to Canada and come in from the north. So long as we have the money, people will come here to try to get some of it, no matter how many guns you point south.

To "secure" our borders in the manner some of you are suggesting would require the ENTIRE military, including the national guard, and reserve, to effectively be mobilized 100 percent of the time. How do you propose we pay for this war while still maintaining a military force capable of protecting our interests abroad and without increasing taxes while still cutting the deficit and/or debt?

"Stop illegal immigration and deport all illegals now?" Sounds great, but how do you propose we round them all up for deportation? Short of martial law being declared across the entire country, followed by unannounced door-to-door searches of every building in America (yes, including YOUR home, and even then we wouldn't find them all), such a thing is an utter impossibility from any practical standpoint. We don't have anything close to the resources and manpower necessary to pull off that feat, either.

Doc, the more important question is, when will We The People demand that someone do something? When?

Illegal aliens (I abhor political correctness) have been an issue for decades and, just like any government responsibility, it's getting worse. We readily admit we have no idea how many illegal are trespassing on our sovereign soil. Instead of being outraged we’re told to be tolerant. Instead of pushing back we’re told we need to be accepting because of their plight. We blame it on corporations wanting cheap labor but we allow our government to not enforce the laws available. We romanticize increased deportations yet still allow a porous border.

We allow dozens of “sanctuary cities”, which are clear violations of law, yet we criminalize Sheriff Arpaio for wanting to enforce whatever state laws we have. The Federal government ignores the problem in favor of pandering for votes as our states try to control the violence, robberies, drug and human trafficking and murders. Instead of working together with the States, as Federalism demands via dual sovereignty, our criminal Justice Department sues them. Border agents die and the stories are just brushed aside as consequences of the job.

Now, had this been a “white Hispanic” shooting a black boy in Arizona the media would be in a feeding frenzy. Stories and accusations would already be filling the media. Everyone from “gun toting, Bible thumping, Right Wing Zealots”, to “racist Republicans”, to “Sarah Palin” to the “TEA Party would be blamed. The Liberal lunatics would be demanding an immediate investigation, justice and punishment. There are also military surplus unmanned drones, and those drones are now being outfitted with MIT's new Xaver 800 Through-Wall Imaging System, it'll see through walls and roofs and give controllers an accurate count of how many people are in a house and what they are doing so authorities can go and raised large concentrations of people in one place as a suspected drophouse for illegals. They tested it in Nogales last year.

Portable DNA analyzers were also developed in deportation camps--everyone detained as an illegal or an undocumented has a DNA sample taken and that is stored so if anyone else's DNA comes up for a similar match anywhere in the US's DNA system they can be detained and asked to prove citizenship. anyone coming through a border checkpoint with DNA that matches someone detained for being illegal can also be detained since if one member of a family is illegal, then others might be too, right? And they are currently testing behavior assessment software at Boston airport that utilizes a full-body scanning system to detect those who are nervous to pinpoint if someone has committed or might commit a crime. The system at Boston airport has some bugs (see recent complaints), but of course Homeland Security's going to work that out.

The military patrolling the borders (because the coasts and Canadian border would have to be equally patrolled as the illegal immigrants shift their migratory patterns to account for the increased security on the southern border) constantly is going to be just as expensive, if not more expensive than fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. How do you propose we pay for both that mobilization, and the MASSIVE increase in manpower the military would require to actually be able to do the job effectively enough to seriously derail illegal immigration? Our military with heavy reinforcement from the National Guard and Reserves as well as the forces of allied nations have not been able to effectively police a country the size of Afghanistan. They would not be enough to effectively protect our borders, either. Not alone.

You're missing the point: If we "shut down" the southern border, they'll just come in through the gulf or the coasts. If you shut down the coasts they'll just go all the way to Canada and come in from the North. These people (ESPECIALLY the actually dangerous ones that everyone's so worried about) will do whatever it takes to get here, because there's too much money involved if they don't.

So what you end up with is effectively the entire military being in "wartime footing" within our own country, and that's expensive as hell, especially when you add in the massive manpower increase that would be necessary to maintain that level of activity effectively, because to truly "shut down" illegal immigration you'd have to have quick reaction forces station across every few miles of every border and/or coastline, ready to respond within minutes to any sensor or drone "hit." Anything less and people are still going to get through.

Not to mention the money the Government would have to spend to buy up all the private property along the borders in order to create what amounts to a "militarized zone." How big do you think it should be? One mile in? Maybe five? Say goodbye to the city of El Paso! Or at least accept that it will have to be under a constant state of martial law to effectively "keep the illegals out."

Additionally, the United States offered programs for thousands of Mexicans to work in the United States in support of the war effort, in addition to "Citizen to Soldier" programs for Mexicans willing to enlist in the US military.

Mexican troops did see combat, particularly in the Pacific theater, but by and large were not a huge presence on the battlefield. Additionally, troopers that were killed while serving in the "Citizen to soldier" programs were counted among the AMERICAN casualties.

Mexico's weapons were never fired during WW2 so they couldn't claim they were rusty. What did Mexico do? Turned it's back on the world. Such bravery should not go unnoticed.

This should be taught in every US school!

BTW: I have yet to find even one WW2 veteran that can claim to have seen a MEXICAN in their entire service during WW2. They must have been INVISIBLE!

When my husband's grandparents came in at Ellis Island after WWI, they showed up with a list of skills that could contribute to America's country and economy. if they knew someone who is already here, it helped but was not necessary.

Sometime after WWII, a rule was changed so that the only way you could emigrate was if you knew someone already here. In order to come in, you have to have an employer, school or educational institution or family member sponsor you in. If you don't have a sponsor, no matter what skills you have you can't come in.

And we can see the results of that rule today:

*The 'anchor baby' debate, where people who want to emigrate but don't know anyone here,slip over the border, have a couple of kids, raise them under the radar and then slip back over the border t fill out papers while their child sponsors them in;

*Chain immigration where if one can get in they try to sponsor their family in;

*Increased wait times for paperwork processing--particularly for third world countries, countries that experience a lot of conflict and/or natural disasters, because in addition to trying to find out if the applicant has a criminal record, USCIS also has to find out how the sponsor (if not an employer or school) knows/is related to the applicant. In countries where record-keeping isn't a high priority, where the governments don't like us much, or who have recently undergone a natural disaster (think Haiti) that process of tracing family ties can take years, even decades.

Think how much better the whole immigration process would be if you could come in on your own merit, like it used to be, instead of solely on who you know. We would once more attract the best and brightest; those with skills to contribute, innovative ideas, free thinkers and the brightest scientists. letting in people based on contributing skills was part of what propelled us to the top of the list as a world power right after WWII; what are going to lose by going back to that system?

What you failed to mention is that those are being replaced with troops who can operate the drones and other unmanned surveillance equipment. One of those drones can patrol a much larger area than five troops--the scanning surveillance reportedly covers 4 square miles while moving and 10 square miles while stationary. Considering that drones don't need health benefits, don't get tired or need to sleep or have days off, I would assume the government likes this reduction in budget.

To be a Border Patrol, working in close proximity to the border with Mexico, is to know what it's like to go sneeking through the bushes with a big bright bullseye-target pasted on your back. That is one of the first things they teach young cadets at FLETC. Danger goes with the territory, they knew that fact of life long before the passed FLETC. Hell, even our sniffer-dogs have bounty's put on them by the cartels. Duco (now retired) was a famous German Shepard, and the first sniffer-dog I had ever heard of that had a bounty put on him. Today, they all have prices on their heads.

I was born and raised in a Border Town (Laredo, TX), and there have been border patrol agents there since before I was born (1962). When will this be seen as an act of war, an attack on US citizens on US soil!? Militarize the border and shoot on site. The agents who were shot were on patrol with a third agent, who was not harmed, according to George McCubbin, president of the National Border Patrol Council, a union representing about 17,000 border patrol agents. The agents were on horseback at the time of the shooting.

McCubbin said he had no further information regarding the shooting.

Weed is like a drug--you know, while in the main I think Marijuana is a fairly harmless drug on a par with Alcohol, I also have seen the effects of pot smoking on Teenagers in the US. I KNOW of 3 teens in my local HS, all very talented and 'smart' kids, who became at least "psychologically'' adicted to it, and watched their school work suffer as a result. I've known people who can ONLY smoke cigarettes when out at a bar, and not ever feel the need again. I DID vote for Obama, who, while campaigning to secure our borders, has merely given "rights'' to ILLEGALS.

And as a mother of a gay son, I find it absolutely AMAZING that he has only given lip service to GAY (citizens!!!) rights while handing out rights to ILLEGALS that American citizens cannot get.

ALL three of my kids went to schools in other states and had to pay out of state tuition. But illegal students get a free pass on that.

So yeah--I feel PERFECTLY free to criticize Obama. I hold him to the same "high standards" I held BUSH to.

We have the largest number of border patrol agents on the border in history. Twice as many as Bush had.

The Obama administration is no worse than any previous presidential administrations when it comes to the US-Mexican border crisis. The problem is in Washington, and the views of fat-cat rich elites(rich Republicans and rich Democrats) who wants illegals to drive down the wages of working class, by competing at unfair wages.

Big corporations also profiteer from cheaper illegal labor, and in turn wages of working class Americans are held back because of the illegal competition.

Big corporations have created and lobbied for the prohibition (research Dupont and their war against hemp(not pot, which is different) because hemp out produced their product, and their are dozens of other examples of hemp producing more paper than trees, and using less water, less damage to the environment, etc..) of hemp in any form, because it couldn't be produced artificially(they tried and failed).

The oil industry, Monsanto, Cargill, etc.. is also against hemp because it has been shown to be cheaper to produce and more efficient than many products in vehicle use, but again they tried to make an artificial version and failed.

Finally Nancy Reagan's "War on Drugs" has failed and prohibition wastes money and resources and lives. But the big corporations profiteer from the chaos so it goes on and on.

The other current prohibition is the drinking limitation on young adults who are old enough to go to jail, serve in the military, register for the draft ("selective service" is a Big Brother term), get a DWI, vote, etc....but cannot drink legally.

Young adults always find a way of getting alcohol, but because they are snubbed by society until they turn age 21, we have effectively created entire generations of adults who view anyone over 30 as "the problem" and often drug use is their answer if they can't go to a bar from age 18-20, thanks to MADD and other invasive groups that are ruining this country

Border Patrol activities aren't domestic if they take the checkpoints they have in America out of the equation.

One, the National Guard is not a federal agency, their oath is for the state in which the unit resides. The CINC of the guard is the governor of that state. State budgets go towards guard funding as well as federal funding. Under FORMDEPS, all units can be mobilzed and actived, Reserve and Guard.

Two, no military branch exists to protect the United States or its citizens, if you served, your enlistment/ oath of office is very specific, "The protect and Defend The Constitution of The United States agains all enemies, foreign and domestic.

Three, the Insurrection Act allows the use of federal troops to stop any uprising that would threaten the constitution.

I love it when know it all civilians think they know everything about the military. Enlist and find out for yourself.

The main reason Arizona hasn't already mobilized the Guard is the feds won't pony up money to support the effort.

Don't be too hard on Lincoln, he even stated once that civil war wasn't about slavery, it was about saving the union.

The southern states controlled a good portion of shipping routes and commerce and so a division would not have been good economically for the rest of the nation, Lincoln had no choice but military action of which the various southern states brought upon themselves. You argue all day about the politics and ethics, but in the end you are left with economics and choices.

On some levels, the civil war was really about keeping large southern plantation owners, and southern tycoons wealthy. The idea of fighting to stand up against the tyranical(spell) Federal government, and all that sort of propaganda is how their army was raised.

All drugs have to be legalized to stop this violence, not just marijuana. The cartels are bringing over a ton of different drugs. Mexico would have to legalize the same drugs as well.

Joy, the problem with your theory that legalizing pot would stop the drug cartels is that they would likely then just switch to Cocaine, Heroin, Meth, or any other drug.

You DO realize that if we "militarize the border" they'll just start coming in boats up the west or gulf coasts? If we militarize the coasts and ports, they'll just head as far north as Canada and come across that border instead. By the time you've finished "militarizing" both coasts and both borders, you would literally have to mobilize the entire population of the United States in order to effectively police it all, not to mention the rampant declarations of martial law, and no longer having a military that can do ANYTHING abroad because all their resources are devoted to protecting the borders.

I guess we're gonna need some heavy immigration to fill that manpower gap....

Napolitano was the governor of AZ for years. She understands what the border problems are like there yet now that she is part of the Obama administration there is no support for her home state. It makes me sick. And when the people and government of AZ tried to do something about it the federal government sued them. It is incomprehensible!

Bush didn't tell us about the real reason for the war( Oil,Israel, I suppose?), but Saddam Hussein did have chemical weapons(poison mustard gas) of which he already used on his own people (Kurds) to silence them. Saddam also "rattled the saber" at a pretty lousy time for the US (shortly after the Cole attack) by spouting off about having nuclear weapons and how Israel should be "wiped off the face of the earth", so adding it all up, and with Dick "shotgun" Cheney pushing to get his old HALLIBURTON buddies a big contract in the oil industry, well things weren't looking good for ole Saddam at that point.

This article did not give enough information, so I turned on Fox News and the story was covered completely, our border patrol agents were deliberately ambushed. Go to Fox and check it out. I don't understand why this site did not give complete coverage.
