Going bare on the streets of San Francisco could legally become taboo, if a city official's proposal to ban public nudity gains support.
Supervisor Scott Wiener, who represents a district in the city and county of San Francisco, introduced the ordinance Tuesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Wiener's coverage area includes the Castro District, which is notorious for nudity.
Under the proposed law, nudity would still be allowed at San Francisco's street fairs, festivals, parades and beaches (which are under federal control). The ordinance is instead targeting an increase in daily occurrences of nudists around the district.
"We've always had some public nudity in the Castro," Wiener told NBC on Thursday. But Wiener said there has recently been a significant increase in the neighborhood's Jane Warner Plaza.
"Our town square [is] becoming an ad-hoc nudist colony," Wiener said, adding that on a slow day there are two to four nudists at the plaza, and on a busy day, upward of 10 to 12.

Since California state law does not ban public nudity outright, but only "lewd" public behavior, these rules are left for cities and counties to decide, according to The San Francisco Examiner. The Examiner noted that San Francisco's parks and port property already ban nudity, but this proposed ordinance would also include public transit, sidewalks, plazas and smaller "parklets."
The proposed ordinance would fine people in the buff up to $100 for a first offense, up to $200 for a second offense within a year, and either a misdemeanor or up to $500 ticket for the third strike.
To pass, the plan has to be approved by a majority of the city's supervisors and signed by San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, the Examiner noted.

But not everyone in the city is too happy about banning birthday suits in public.
George Davis, a former nude candidate for mayor in San Francisco, told the Chronicle that he believes the proposed ban is "an attack on freedom."
"I walk all over the place nude," Davis told the Chronicle. "The most common reaction is oblivious."
This is not the first time Wiener has targeted the city's public nudity. According to the Examiner, last year he successfully helped encourage a law that stipulates nudists must place a cloth buffer between their body and any public seat they sit on.
Public nudity bans are already in place in the Bay Area cities of San Jose and Berkeley, Calif., the Examiner reported.

123will,
even in a nudist atmosphere we sit on towels, and relieve ourselves in a restroom. we respect public health and sanitation. Say that to those who trash up the city and highways with cigarette butts, liquor bottles and trash which should go into the rubbish, not on the street.
naturistlife
Bottom line, we dont want to see your nasty saggy azz, or teeny weenie jiggling around in public.
Its not about freedoms or anything else..its about...FREAKIN GROSS!
Yeah!
weathermen
remember freedom of speech and expression, it is not dead! Maybe we should go back to arresting men for not wearing shirts at the beach. maybe we should arrest people for freedom of speech.
if you want to exclude one segment of life, lets not stop there. We should arrest young women for being naked in an outdoor photo shoot, or wearing a tiny thong bikini, that leaves little to the imagination.
why stop there, we should arrest people who push their puritan beliefs on others! How about arresting people for breaking the 10 commandments, for stealing penny candy from a store, or looking lustfully at another's wife, or cussing, or ruining someones life over a harmless act of simple nonsexual nudism.
Nude is not lewd
weatherman
what is freaking gross?
Here is something gross: finding heroin needles in the street, beer and liquor bottles and garbage laying in the curbs where someone dumped it out on the ground, cigarette butts that get washed out into the ocean to choke fish and wildlife, going to our national parks and finding trash 30 miles from the nearest trash receptical where a bear eats it and it clogs his intestines, people standing on the corner begging for money to feed their families because their job is now done in china, children of disabled people starving because someone took their assistance away, life saving health procedures being denied because some insurance company removed that from the list of coverage. I can go one if you wish!!
so what is more gross? Simple non-sexual public nudity or what I just quoted!
If your worried about what children see in public? The last time I was in San Francisco, I was told by a shop owner their restrooms were not open to the public. he recommended going to the McDognold's on the corner. when I was in there, I could not use one stall because an addict was shooting up. when I reported it to the manager, he said he lived in there. How did I notice this? his needle was laying on the floor near his foot the whole time I was in there!
Human beings are (according to the Christian beliefs) created in God's image. Since we are not born with clothing on and often have no hair or teeth we must assume that God is indeed quite nude, possibly bald, and even toothless. So for those who are offended in the presenc of God I suggest that you consider joining another religion. LOL
For those who seem to feel that their personal disgust over the appearance of the human body (which is actually quite a miraculous creation in point of fact) should compel everyone to hide it and feel great shame about it and that it is not Constitutionally a protected right to go unclothed I suggest that said right comes under the clause about pursuing life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Not everyone agrees just what constitutes happinesss but if being naked makes one happy then that should ultimately be their right regardless of where they are.
Frankly this whole topic is quite silly to me. As a practicing nudist I am careful to pursue my pleasure in private facilities out of simple courtesy for those who are so paranoid and disgusted with their own bodies that they cannot stand to see others who simply do not feel the way that they do. Also there is really very little sexy about a totally naked human body. It is when you hide it under sexy clothing and tease with it that it becomes sexy. Just a personal observation that I discovered in my first visit to a camp. I was terrified that I would be unable to control my natural physical reaction but after about 20 minutes I forgot about it completely and enjoyed a nice game of volleyball with several other men and women. Kids, by the way, are totally unabashed and accept nudity quite naturally. The adults are the one who tend to pervert the experience.
There are civilizations on this planet today whose people live their entire lives and never wear a single piece of clothing other than for occasional ceremonial decoration. They live quite normally and do not go around raping each other and even have very complex social order similar to ours. In fact many of their social constructs are more rigid than ours when it comes to the family unit while others are far more lax. Nakedness does not equate to sex unless the person making the connection is perverted to begin with so if you are disgusted by nudity I suspect that perhaps you protest too much because of the dark thought that dwell in your subconscious. LOL
Seriously? They'll ban walking around nude but continue to allow teh gheys to give each other bloe-jobs at the festivals?
Well, sure, I get it. Public secks is A-ok, as long as...wait, I guess its just ok. But keep your bare buttox off the bus seats!
I like Austin's laws when it comes to nudity. Everyone gets to go topless. Nobody get to go bottomless. Sensible. Legit. Lots of titties.
how dare the city of san francisco restrict my right to sit put my sagging & wrinkly bare ass with dried fecal matter & puss from herpes sores and festering pimples in the the city's parks, plazas and restaurants? what is this country coming to?
how dare the city of san francisco restrict my right to sit put my sagging & wrinkly bare ass with dried fecal matter & puss from herpes sores and festering pimples on public toilet seats.
How dare people sneeze in their hands, then hold onto a handrail in a bus. We need to enforce glove-wearing.
Seems like there are those who prefer to see only women nude or topless. I bet they even catagorize them, too. John, would you allow a woman who is obese to go topless? At nearly 60 years old, I have been a nudist since I was 14, met with countless numbers of people who are nudists from all walks of life, from priests/ministers to businesspersons to police and one politician and other walks of life, from young to very old, very skinny to very heavy. I have met some people I will enjoy meeting, every time I encounter them.
One is a woman, a very confident, secure, open minded woman, who has a masters degree. She is a wonderful person to meet and conversations with her are enjoyable! She is well tanned, and a member of one of our local family resorts, and well respected! By the way, when I greet her, and when I leave the resort at the end of the day, I hug a woman who may be over 400 pounds!
John, would you allow her to go topless with you?
People should not critical of something they have never tried. Nudism and naturism is about social interaction, business, sports, hiking, camping, boating, swimming, religion and much more.
It is not about sex, which some people have been led to believe by misinformed, antiquated people, who, twist ideals to their own social norms.
Newd is not lewd.
If nudists truly do not have sexual feelings about it (just like wrestling is real), does that mean nudists' bodies are like electric lamps that only "get turned on by touching it"?
naturistlife, where do you live? apparently you do not live in san francisco. a number of nudists have already publically denounced the exhbitionists now using the "nudists" and the "gay and lesbian" movements to further their cause. two of the men behind the social nudism in san francisco have a website called 'bucknaked' promoting and selling videos of naked men not only nude but masturabating in public. one of thier videos they sell is called 'brazen public sex.' why can't you see these guys in san francisco are not only hurting the gay and lesbian movement, they are hurting the nudist movement too. stop defending them. they are repulsive and any real nudist would know that
There is a law against obscenity; enforce that law. If youre not going to enforce the obscenity law against masturbation, then how will an anti-nudity law help?
mission,
if they are who doing that in public, then they should be arrested. I am not for exhibition sex in the street. Nudism and naturism is not about public sex, in fact it is not about that at all! You are right, I do not live in SF, I visit there enough to know what the Peninsula is like, and the social ills that goes on there. There is also rampant drug use in the streets, porn theaters in areas on the outlying areas, and hookers, of all sorts, on corners in the tourist areas. There are social ills in SF, which need to be dealt with, that is worse than a few naked people walking about, doing nothing more than enjoying coffee or a meal, shopping for everyday needs and doing nothing more than enjoying the sun.
It is true, we do enjoy seeing other nudists, but it is not all about sex, there are textiles out there, who pass for everyday people who do worse things. I am unaware of the practices of the bucknaked site, I do not go to those sites, nor do anything to contribute to their content. I will lay odds that most of those videos are taken in the thousands of cities around the world. There are even studios that are made up to look like cities and neighborhoods. I have worked in Hollywood enough to know, that, what you see in a video is not what it seems! at 5 I was told by a director that what you see is a lie derived by many people to tell you an imagined story.
Check out the AANR, TNS, FKK, and their related sites, of which I am a member of one, all of which promote, healthy, social nudism, with family values, in any atmosphere, anywhere. Also, I donate to the Naturist Action Committee, who defend our rights to go nude in any environment, mostly resorts beaches, public lands and in national parks. None of these groups are about sexual activity of any kind.
Do not judge our lifestyle based on the actions of another, less than questionable group. Also, do not judge someone's lifestyle until you have lived the same lifestyle.
Nude is not lewd!
sees thru gloss,
Life is not so narrowly focused as what you posted. I have hugged so many naked people in my life, including my nudist boss and a co-worker, women as well as men. None of us have ever had a single reaction, none of us has gone to bed together. True, we are sexual beings, but not in your sense of what is in our reality.
Just a passing observation from an on-again/off-again nudist. There is a distinct reason that the ladies lingerie industry flourishes like it does. A nude woman is beautiful indeed but is not particularly sexy. It is when she discretely covers the more important bits with thongs and tiny bras that things begin to heat up. It is the imagination of the male that is stimulated by what he does not see rather than what he sees.
The legendary "Dance of the Seven Veils" is based upon the art of the tease. For voyeurs it is the thrill of seeing that which they are not meant to see. If a lady just puts it out their voluntarily it really loses much of the attraction for them. This is all based loosely on basic human psychology and since the male of our species tends to be tactile and visual he is stimulated most by being teased and touched.
The ladies, on the other hand, generally are stimulated most by romance and attention. Yes they have a certain degree of tactile response as well but it only becomes effective when physical stimulation comes from someone they have already bonded with emotionally. That is why rapes are seldom a satisfying event. The romantic emotion is replaced by one of fear and loathing and the only time any satisfaction is obtained is if the rape fantasy happens to be a part of their psyche.'
Now on a similar note these persons have taken a tolerance to the nudity and gone over board with it by applying teasing aspects such as genital jewelry and tattoos and by using suggestive behaviors up to and including actual sexual activities and that is when it crosses the line from simple nudity to obscenity. As a result they stand to lose that privilage that had been granted them.
Want a new perspective? See what we're saying in the naturist community -
No need for the nudists to worry - the last thing San Francisco will do is stand up for morals or decency.
Arguments against freedom seem to include:
(1) IT WILL BLOW OUR KIDS MINDS. Well, most animals go naked, as did humans for a long, long time, and babies grew up just fine. Kids like to run around naked. Its only later they pick up our wierd shame about this or that part of our body. A hundred years ago it was a woman's ankle. In Tehran a woman's eyes are shameful and disturbing to children. Stop blaming the kids. You freak out at seeing naked people. Believe me, you get used to it fairly quickly.
(2) DISEASE! lol. You going to pass an ordinance banning putting a naked azz on a public toilet seat? Which do you think you can catch more cooties from? Sitting in your trousers on a bus seat someone has used or sitting with your naked patootie on a toilet seat someone else has used? How about putting your hand on a bus rail thats been held by someone who just blew their nose?
We know you are prudes. Thats OK. But is your offendedness justification for bannign somethign you dont like to see? What about banning public kissing? Public kissing between old people? Ewwww! Lets just ban old people. Nasty, wrinkly old people. Fanny packs. Now there's something that really grosses me out.
Public nudity laws are simply a cultural issue. There is no actual reason to avoid it; many societies have nude people running around all over, and they do quite well. Just admit that you cant handle the sight of a wang. Thats OK. Fundies force other women to wear burqas. Bikinis were shocking when introduced.
John I think that you are urinating up a rope here brother. LOL Those who have been conditioned from their childhood to be ashamed of their bodies simply cannot accept it any other way. Unfortunately they also transfer that shame onto everyone else around them. A pity really. As a on-again off-again nudist myself I find the human body to be quite beautiful in all of its states. However I don't flaunt my attitudes in front of others because I am sensitive to their insecurities. Oddly they seem to care not what others think though and insist that we cover up in public.
Oh well the majority rules and so it should but it doesn't negate the fact that they are missing one of life's most pleasurable and freedom like feelings to be found anywhere. Nudity is the great equalizer. You may be the richest dude in the world but when you are naked all that wealth means nothing. You are just like everyone else unless you happen to be wearing a 12 carat diamond ring. HEH HEH HEH HEH
I used to live in SF. My husband and I were married in SF. My daughter now lives in SF. We LOVE SF.
So the latest news of further degradation and debauchery in SF had me sobbing in tears last night.
Naked homosexuals in the public parks and streets?
This....is wickedness.
Be bold in fighting this stuff. (These people are obnoxious. Like toddlers throwing a tantrum.) Be brave. And save the city of SF.

Romans 1 (Excerpts) Greetings
1 Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God 2 which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, ...declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.
God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, ....
24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their
hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth
of God for the lie....
26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women
exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men,
leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men
with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty
of their error which was due.
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over
to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled
with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness,
maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are
whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors
of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy,
unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.
*************************************
"Against nature" means any and all homosexual activity.
"Lust for one another" means even homosexual desires and thoughts are
here seen as sinful in God's sight. "Penalty" means any destructive
consequences resulting from homosexuality, whether physical, emotional, or
spiritual.
1:29-31 The description of a society totally rebelling against God.
IS THIS NOT SAN FRANCISCO?!
"Come, let us reason together." A reasoned discourse!
This behavior needs to stop. Now.
What next? Naked homosexuals and their supporters the only citizens living there?
The good people fleeing?
A city full of naked people shopping Safeway??? (Europe is more degraded than we are. And none of them is considered a great nation as we still have a hope of being again.)
1:32 The deeply irrational nature of sin is seen in the fact that even hardened sinners still know in their hearts that their actions are "deserving of death". Nevertheless, they go on sinning and even drag others down with them when they approve of those who do the same things. Judgment from God is withheld only to
give time to repent.
***************************************
I believe in great things for SF. There is a tremendous, albeit somewhat
secret, move of God there. Many young people are fierce in their love of
Christ. But can those young people withstand a tsunami of sin from those well
practiced and deeply, deeply committed to their sins? (They can find PEACE in the Words of God.)
That will remain to be seen.
DO NOT ALLOW PUBLIC NUDITY IN SAN FRANCISCO. You will deeply come to regret it if you do.
Take care.
