In North Dakota and Montana, the first snow of the season has arrived, but on the East Coast the temperatures will reach up into the 80s. NBC's Brian Williams reports.
A rare early October snowstorm dumped snow across parts of Minnesota and North Dakota, including 14 inches in one Minnesota county, snapping tree lines and cutting power to residents who worked to dig out and clean up on Friday.
Some areas saw record amounts for this early in the season, the National Weather Service said in an advisory. Grand Forks, N.D., was among them -- getting 3.5 inches by Thursday afternoon. The previous Oct. 4 record for the city was 2 inches in 1950.
"For early October, this is definitely a big storm," Jeff Makowski, a weather service meteorologist based in Grand Forks, told Reuters.
Near-blizzard conditions were blamed for a head-on collision that killed a woman, the Grand Forks Herald reported.
Minnesota's Roseau County saw the most snow by Thursday afternoon -- 14 inches. The county is in the state's northwest corner, near the border with Canada.
Six inches of snow were reported in Karlstad, Minn., where residents had been forced from the city temporarily this week by a wildfire that burned several homes and other structures.

Snow falls Thursday in Fargo, N.D., which saw an inch by the afternoon.
Northern Minnesota and North Dakota have seen several years where snow fell in the second half of September, the weather service reported.
The region had seen unusually warm temperatures earlier in the week -- including Monday's high of 80 degrees in Grand Forks.
Reuters contributed to this report.

Let the long winter begin......ugh
I'm jealous. We didn't even have a winter last year here in the south. It was, at best, a late-fall, early-spring kinda blend that caused flowers to bloom a month-and-a-half early, and pretty much threw everything else off accordingly.
I hope we get tons of snow this winter to make up for lost time...and to get rid of so many of these darned bugs.
Must be Global Warming, right Al Gore? Help Stop Global Whining!!!
Hello Al? Yeah Al, I kind of have a question for you about that "global WARMING" thing you make such a deal out of....... can we get some of that?
Huuuuh ? It didn't hit in D.C. ?
Mother nature was off target a bit. Cold day in H*** when Mr. Obama is going to announce he got something done with bi-partisan support since he announced "The election is over and I won".
SMF. The climate deniers are ignoring the winter that wasn't on the northern plains last year, and the heat and drought of this summer. Early snows happen. That doesn't mean our climate hasn't changed.
Personally, glad I was up there last weekend to enjoy the 80 degree days, cool nights and gorgeous colors on the trees, but got out before snow started. Now, when the temps go back up into the 50s, and this stuff melts, it will be a real Indian Summer
Every snow report makes me smile and thank my lucky stars for living in Southern California. Temps are still in the mid-70's to low 80's. Please visit here as tourists and go home to your chilly homes and whine about the weather.
Global warming is so passe. We are now looking at global climate change or shift, which IS happening and people do have a lot to do with it. the question is how do we fix it? I'm not sure that we can so we'd all better get ready for some very weird weather.
Nice try ldo, but the President does not cause whiteouts in ND/MN in October. You guys already admit he won the election. You've already been defeated and, it will still be a cold day in hell before Romney gives a crabs butt about any of us?
Ozmosis; look at all the whining your post caused...lmao!
Still in the upper 90's in Tucson - the window to get stuff done outside gets smaller every year - even the plastic flowers died.
Hard breaking news... it's winter and it snowed :)
What makes this news, is that it isn't winter but still early Fall. And this is unusal even for this area.
You do realize that global warming doesn't mean it will be hot (or even warmer) everywhere all year round right? I get so sick of hearing these kinds of comments every time is snows. Global warming causes WEATHER EXTREMES, like more blizzards, stronger storms, more drought, etc. etc. So an uncharacteristically early snowstorm that drops record amounts of snow for this time of year could be caused by global warming. Although, considering where it occurred, I wouldn't really be alarmed. They tend to get a lot of snow in that part of the U.S....just usually not this early.
amietamant..No thanks I would much prefer my MN winters to your going broke state. The sun might shine but "lipstick on a pig" comes to mind.
Don't you folks get it? "Global warming" is dead. It's now "climate change." That way, when it snows at weird times of the year, or when it rains too much, or when it rains to little, or when it's hot, or when it rains in January when it should be snowing, it can all be blamed on "climate change."
So all you people out there need to start listening to the High Priest of Climate Change, Al Gore. Get rid of your back yard grills, get rid of your trucks and SUVs, get rid of your gas-powered lawn mowers, and start driving a Prius. After all, the world is being destroyed by we greedy capitalist Americans who are enjoying life! Don't you know in the world of liberalism you aren't allowed to be happy because it's NOT all about you?! Equal misery is all that matters folks! Oh, and don't forget to wave to your High Priest as he flies off into the sunset in his private jet!
"Global Warming", "Climate Change", or "Magic 8 Ball" - it doesn't matter what you call it..............
how stupid is your remark!!!!!! you can eve listen to national weather folks talk about the climate change/global warming..
and since there is NO GLOBAL WARMING why are the ice bergs melting so rapidly now????
In 1942 the newspaper reported a foot of snow in this area as well. It was in the 70 years ago section of the current paper. The summer before had also been unseasonably warm. The early settlers wrote in their diaries that this area was desert-like. They were describing a drought. So, is it really climate change, or just a natural cycle that reoccurs.
I wish there was more global warming... winter sucks...
Yep, I expected the idiots to come out of the woodwork right away. "It's snowing so there is no global warming! DERP!"
As any educated person knows, global warming means temperature extremes at both ends of the spectrum. How short some people's memories must be to not remember the record high temperatures and droughts just a couple months ago.
Saying there is no global warming because it snows, is like saying there is no such thing as cancer because you don't have it.
... Haha global warming. Im so glad your telling me this is real and climates don't change over time. I always seem to forget that humans ended the ice age. Thanks Al
MAXGIVER...
its people like you that give people the ability to read headaches.
No one disbelieves the earth is changing (or warming even). Its the fear mongering Al Gore started 20 years ago when they screamed that by now: oceans were supposed to be 2 meters deeper, polar bears were to be extinct and Iceland would be underwater, which BTW-none has occurred. BTW- The earth has been getting warmer exponentially for the past 130000 years... so screaming the world is warming is like screaming its getting dark by midnight.
The problem is WHY the earth is getting warmer, and why does the problem have anything do with taxes? Do you realize how much money Al Gore has tied up in "GREEN" technology, and his huge push for cap&trade tax increases to the general public?
Here's a study similar to proving C02 causing GW, I yell at a frog and it jumps 2 feet. I cut one rear leg off the frog and yell at it, it jumps 1 foot. I cut the other rear leg off and yet at the frog.... It doesn't jump. I just proved without a doubt that frogs have ears in their legs because it couldn't here me yell at it to jump...
This my friends is GW science in action...
We generally get a light snow or heavy frost here in NW ohio and SE michigan the last week of Sept or first week of October. not every year but enough we know odds are we will.
as for global warming or climate change. I get amused when people talk like humans have caused it and humans can stop it. Earth has gone through many cycles over the years long before modern man came along. Mother nature will slowly wipe the slate clean and start over fresh again just like she has many times before. This might even be the best thing that can happen to mankind.
I believe you are speaking of the same Al Gore that said Obama's poor performance at the debate was because of the altitude. Romney had more hours to adjust to the 5,000 foot altitude, therefore, he gave a better performance! HELLO!
BTW...GORE flew to Denver in his private gas guzzling jet from his 5,000+ foot house.
Every farmer had known a cold and severe winter is coming, since we had such a hot summer. It always happens.. I find it funny that Al Gore blamed Obamas poor performance at the debate on the high attitude and climate change.. I wonder how long before he starts blaming the poor economy and muggings on climate change??
Global Warming is dead, and the economy is alive!!!!
I gots me an O'bama phown!
Perhaps when al gore practices what he preaches, perhaps then more will believe his nonsense. He contributes a HUGE carbon footprint. He lives in a huge house that consumes HUGE amounts of fossil fuel, and as someone stated, he has his own private jet, which consumes HUGE amounts of fossil fuel.
But then, I tend to laugh when I read about al gore. I will never forget that he claims he invented the Internet.
How stupid is my remark? First it was "Global Warming". But that won't work because avg temps from year to year were DECREASING!!! So what do you call it then? Say, I have a good idea!! How about "Climate Change"!!
Well, DUH!! Of COURSE it's Climate Change!! The climate has been changing for years, decades, centuries, and millenniums. Why are icebergs melting? That's easy - because its hot. You didn't know that? But 30 years ago it was "cold". You don't remember the newspaper and magazine articles in the 70's by "scientists" stating we were entering a new ice age?
And what about 30 years BEFORE that when there was a worry that it was going to get hot and melt all the icebergs? Funny, I don't recall a huge number of SUV's in the 30's - but they were STILL projecting icebergs melting. And in 20 years from now we will probably be "entering a new ice age" again (no doubt caused by our SUV's then............).
You see, climate has been "changing" for millions of years so I say, and will say again, "Global Warming", "Climate Change", or "Magic 8 Ball" - it doesn't matter what you call it...........
It will get hot, it will get cold, and it will get hot again and nobody including scientists can predict it. So if you want to know what the weather will be next year, five years from now, or even 10 years from now pick up the "Magic 8 Ball", give it a shake, and ask the question. The answer you receive from the Magic 8 Ball will be just as scientific as these knucklehead "scientists" you adore so much.
What kind of an edumacation does one need to become a programed sheeple?
@Ido -
They said snow storm, not sh!t storm.
To all the man-made global warming/climate change hustlers/pimps. No one denies that our climate changes, but it is ludicrous to think that man has the impact on the climate as most like to spout. What is normal climate to all of you? This is not the hottest times on earth. It was hotter when the dinosaurs ruled. I still haven't seen any SUV/ Regular light bulb fossils dug up yet. How about when the earth was a ball of molten lava and fire? Is that normal climate? Or how about when the earth was covered in ice, water, etc? Is that normal climate?
Man didn't even show up on the scene until only a few thousand years ago yet he is to blame for any and all "climate change." Here is the truth. The climate is going to rise and fall over the next few billion years, and whether or not I drive a Prius or change to hippy light bulbs, etc is not going to make one bit of difference. We can be responsible and not pollute our planet, because we all want clean water and air, but that is not and has nothing to do with climate change.
Here is an idea. Enjoy life and your family and friends for the short time we are here. When the earth gets tired of us, it will get rid of us for good. The climate is going to do what it does, and implementing climate taxes and fees won't do sh*t about it. Thank you.
Myspell: I agree. Amazing that people actually BELIEVE man has the ability to impact a climate on its own so significantly as to affect the ability of the earth to function. We have had 75 MAJOR temperature fluctuations over the last 4500 years - hard to believe the 76th just HAPPEN to be because of my truck. In the last 100 years we have had FOUR major temperature swings as well - since 1998 we have been trending DOWN in temperature so how is that whole "Global Warming" concept working for you?
What real scientists have found is our temperature swings have a direct correlation to natural phenomenon like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and sun bursts just to mention a few and MY truck doesn't affect ANY of those three.
So I say again - if you want to know what the climate will be in 10 years pick up a Magic 8 Ball, give it a shake, and ask the question. The Magic 8 Ball will most likely be right more of the time than the "scientists" progressives adore so much............
Pro Business beat me to it. I type too slow. He said it better than I did as well.
Snow is no big deal. If it's snowing, it's not that cold. You can keep your boring weather. I spent the week before last tent camping in NE Minnesota at the height of FALL COLORS. Yes, it got below freezing at night, a couple of days the frost didn't fade until nearly noon. Temperatures ranged from 28 to 72. It was gorgeous and stunning and worth any little discomfort.
no thanks amie id rather stay in in frozen North Dakota than go to broke ass cali again. Too many pompous liberal know it alls and homeless people.
Pro,
you are not thinking in big enough terms. Your truck along is not enough however consider the fact that you only are one person with one truck. When you factor in the billions of cars, billions of homes, the billions of factories built, operated, lived in, and destroyed, and trillions of gallons of gas and tons of coal burned over the past 400 years maybe then you will get some perspective on the issue.
At no point since the ice age that came after the Jurassic period has the Earth seen so much carbon released into the air in as short of time as we have done. We have already surpassed the Neogene period's PPM of CO2 in the atmosphere (in the N period there was 280 PPM, we are currently sitting at 391 PPM). The numbers are the numbers, if you choose to believe them or write them off as nonsense is your prerogative however you should still be away of the results that your beliefs have on the environment around you.
I still think it will take some kind of super-disaster before the nay-Sayers wake up to the reality of it, unfortunately.
I'm from the region and how live in the southern portion of the area that got the snow. The moisture is desperately needed; after a winter of no snow and a summer of no rain our clay soils and subsoils are shrinking causing damage to water lines and building foundations and, if this keeps up, will affect next year's farm crops (soil moisture going into the growing season prevented serious drought damage this year). Yes, there have been October blizzards and January thaws off an on all my life. There have been winters when subzero temps persisted for weeks on end. There have been large and small snow accumulations, wet and dry summers. But the GLOBAL climate effects are clear and obvious. Last year's warm winter was a pleasure after a few brutal ones in a row, but there is no question in my mind the "change" (a Republican term just like "death tax") will impact agriculture in ways farmers can't adapt to quickly enough, will cause more and more expensive disasters, will cause global dislocations affecting world politics and economy, and the piper WILL be paid. Even during the two frigid winters preceding the last warm one, areas closer to the Arctic experienced serious problems as winter transportation routes (frozen rivers, for example) were affected (because the rivers weren't staying frozen)--weak air currents in the polar region caused polar air to move further south. First Nations elderly in Northern Canada describe seeing plants and insects they have never seen in their lives. And just wait until frozen methane in Arctic soils begins to thaw.
Geowil- interesting that the basics of CO2 chemistry and link to fossil fuels burning was recognized by scientists long before CO2 measurements (continuous since 1957) and temperature measurements (with far more historical data than most people recognize) have begun to confirm the scientifically obvious.
SRMcMahon I guess you did not take into account that the CO2 can be measured in the artic ice core samples dating back centuries.
Bring it on! I love Winter.
I agree. Best time of the year. Being from the Berkshires of western MA, I can't stand living in southern CT because the winters are too damn mild and snowless. Looking forward to hopefully moving to far north New England once I'm out of school.
Stay in School ... You Yale Education may get you a job at Mc D's The Berkshires last 2 years have been almost drought of snow... Come to Vermont ! Flatlanders just slay me!
Time to break out the boards and hit the slopes!
Um, Darrel, have you ever been to eastern ND/northwestern MN? There are no slopes to be found there (unless you count the slopes in ditches). The highest land point in a 50 mile radius is in Fargo, ND. That land mass is artificial too; it's an I-29 overpass.
I grew up south of Fargo and I'll be heading up there this weekend. Really hoping the forecast for the first half of the week is accurate.
Tom, you are not exactly right....Walhalla, ND is in the Pembina Gorge and they do have a skiing area there. Just saying.
And that is in NE ND btw
Right on there Tracy, I just checked and there is, in fact, a 43 foot drop in elevation between downtown Walhalla and Fargo airport. Excellent ski slope if, you have the wind at your back all the way and, a good set of ski poles.
I'm sorry, I just couldn't help myself.
Relief ! After a long hot summer.
In Roseau, there are only two seasons: summer and hockey season. And, yes, I believe they are ready for hockey to start...
Hockey season isn't happening at the professional level :( now my winter will be depressing
Lyndanne, you may want to check out Division I college hockey, in the meantime (most are on Friday and Saturday nights):
NESN: usually Hockey East schools (BC, BU, Maine, Vermont, UNH, etc.)
FSN (Fox Sports-North): U of Minn
FSRM (Rocky Mtn): U of Denver
FSD (Detroit): U of Mich/Mich State
BTN (Big Ten Network): Minn/Mich/Wisc/Mich St/Ohio State
There are dozens of players destined for the NHL playing at these schools. Enjoy.
:) Yesss!!! Winter Wonderland....
Very surprised to see this article at all. Nice downplay by NOAA.
And next week it could still get up in the 80's.
Needed the moisture and they don't really care in what form. It will melt next week and those lucky people will have a good part of any drought behind them.
That area really needed this snow to stop the forest fire and mother nature did a good job.
What name did the Weather Channel give this winter storm? I missed the 3 days of hype! BTW, we can all rest assured that naming the winter storms will be used just like naming hurricanes so that the tree hugging leftists media can say that there are more named winter storms this year than last (once it has been in effect 2 or more years) and point to US citizen caused global climate change for any deviation in the number of named winter storms. Pure BS!
Naming the winter storms is certainly a leftist media conspiracy. The first one will be Mitt, the second Paul, the 3rd Bill, the 4th Carl, etc. Very appropriate names because these storms can be very destructive and unpredictable.
But, unlike our current disastrous 4 year storm named Obama, winter is predictable and the snow goes away!
It is easier to call people "tree hugging leftists" than to research the scientific evidence about global warming and to engage in an intelligent dialogue. If you can get beyond the dismissive, immature name-calling, some of us would be willing to examine whatever evidence you might present to defend your position that the theory of global warming is "BS." Are you up for the challenge?
Me thinks that Chuck W just got thrashed by 1Rodney B!
If you climate change people actually study weather history, you will see that there have always been extremes in temperature through the ages.
So sorry to snow on your parade ... however ...
... along with ...
The most clear sign of AGW that we will notice as we pass through the tipping point is unusual weather. Yes, the average will be higher (and it is) but consistently inconsistent weather is the unmistakable indicator of AGW.
There you go again Porter. If it happens it's global warming and if it doesn't happen it's global warming. Weather by it's very nature is unusual therefore nothing unusual happened. An average is the point somewhere in the middle of extremes so anything can happen anytime. So first; if you so desperately need to save the earth head on back to the stone age and refrain from the burning of any wood or other carbon based materials. Second; If saving the earth is the goal, how will we know when we achieve it? It snowed in North Dakota and northern Minnesota so what else is new. IT"S THE GLOBAL WARMING BOOGEY MAN!!!!!BOO
Global Warming is so last decade...
Now we must PREVENT CONTINENTAL DRIFT!!!
BEFORE ITS TOO LATE, it will destroy us all unless we tax the people to find a way to prevent the earths plates from shifting. Scientists have proven it is the single main cause of earthquakes, flooding, volcanoes and coastal erosion on this planet... its already taking its toll and may be past the tipping point... react before its too late... make a stand... call your leaders...
To say that global warming or climate change MIGHT cause weather EXTREMES is simply theory not supported by facts or real science, and is simply THEORY based upon the AGW MODEL.
It was in the 80's here in Denver yesterday and snowed last night. I have seen the same conditions 50 years ago on the 3rd of September. You're just wrong Porter.
Actually, climate change, whether you want to call it natural or unnatural is responsible for a lot of damage in that area. Trees are being wiped out by insect infestations that are catastrophic. I saw it first hand in a former favorite camping spot, how bad it can get. They had to remove half of the trees due to insects, and the ones left were scrawny birch trees. Birch and Pine are both being infected. They need the severe freezing temperatures and Birch need the Pine trees to survive. I have also noticed, all over the region, many birch that have been cut down are nothing more than sawdust in a skin. Snow is nothing. Certain areas need to have their sub-zero days in order to preserve the eco-system of that area.
Believe it or not, the reply I liked most was the one about continental drift. That's because, at this point, we probably have the same ability to actually do something about both. There was a time when we might have reversed AGW. But now, we're all going to ride the bus to the bottom of the cliff together.
Hope you're enjoying the exciting view out of the bus windows. I am! Wheeee !!!
Well, I'm sitting here in Colorado, freezing my backside. They can keep the snow for my part. I hate winter, I don't want the snow. Unfortunately, we are suppose to have snow later on today. Brrrr! I'm goin South for the winter, like the birds. Give me sunshine and warm weather.
lacywild..now when you go doen the mountain do you have to wait and adjust your thinking because of the lower alttitude? Better check with Gore.
Here in the Sierras above Sacramento, there is a very confused azalea blooming again! It was 92 day before yesterday, 50 this morning going for a high of 72. I've lived in Wisconsin, you can keep the drastic winters as far as I'm concerned.
Hi JanH- Here in Atlanta it is the same confused Azalea's are blooming for the second time this year loaded with flowers. Hope they come back in Spring, I have never seen this before.
It is 86 degrees at 80 percent humidity here in North Florida. It is miserable. Wish it would snow, but that's not going to happen.
Send some farther west. Some snow fell on the eastern plains in Colorado and the edge of the mountains where they meet the plains, but most of Colorado (including most of the mountains) got missed. Still in a bad drought out here. It's blue skies in Western Colorado.
Sky is grey north of Denver, CO.
This should come as no surprise considering these guys are just south of Manitscolda.
LOLm good one.
Must be that "global warming thingy"
Had about an inch of snow on my car and a bit on the grass in West Denver last night, and might get a few show showers today and tonight and perhaps a hard freeze by morning. Overcast and 37 degrees right now. Feels good after the long and hot summer.
Must be all that Global Warming. :)
Just out of curiosity, does Not a Sheep anymore imply that you are a reformed Democrat?
Or maybe a reformed Republican. If you are devoted to one of those parties, you are a sheep.
Memories of the Halloween Mega Storm that hit the Twin Cities in the winter of 92/93? But then it snowed for 58 hours and dumped about 38 inches of the heavy wet stuff. Shut the TC down for a few days as they weren't "prepared" for a storm like that that early in the season.
Teatards attack AGW!
Porter Rockwell,
Thanks for not letting me down. I knew someone would attempt to link an October snow storm in N.E. North Dakota to global warming. Welcome to the Upper Midwest/Upper Great Plains. We have extremes here. More than anywhere else in the country. Yes there is a chance of snow in October and yes with the Chinook Winds(sp?) in January the temperature may climb to the 60s. There is an old saying in this region; If you don't like the weather here, wait an hour. It'll change!
I want a cold/snowy winter this year only because I want to get rid of these stink bugs that are invading my house!!
Sorry, but the snow won't stop the campaign ads.
I am a little confused on why you had to make a smart@ss remark?
It wasn't intended as a "smart@ss remark".
Just simply comparing one annoying pest to another.
I thought it was funny. Some people just don't have much of a sense of humor.
jimreaper,
Sorry, I misunderstood...sometimes hard to tell how someone says things by reading it lol
It's the beginning of the next ice age. Rejoice polar bears, rejoice!
This is why I Moved to Tulsa! you'all can have that Crapola!
55 degrees or thereabouts? It's chilly enough here for me.
I sure hope it doesn't interfere with the president's campaign schedule. What am I thinking...he doesn't campaign for anything white.
SMH with laughter....no global warming here in North Dakota. This kind of weather is normal here. When we stop getting snow then maybe the term "global warming" can be used. North Dakota is "GOD's COUNTRY" and the reason we use this term is because we do not get Hurricans, Earth Quakes, etc. I will not deny the fact that we do get occasional Tornadoes, along with some flooding, but thats as far as that goes. I love (God"s Country) N.D :)
You barely got any snow at all in all of last winter. I wore a t-shirt and shorts outside in ND in the middle of last February. Do you remember that?
I'm from a little small town in Blecourt N.D and yes i do remember how much snow we did in fact get. We did get large amounts of snow. However, we did not get as much as we usually do, but our winters are like that. One year we'll have a large amount of snow and the following year after that, we'll have double the amount of snow from the previous year. As far as the shirt and shorts comment, regardless of the temperature, North Dakotans wear shirts and shorts all year round regardless of the weather.
yeah cameron if you have been here in ND for a while you should realize the weather is never "normal"
