Snowstorm hits North Dakota, Minnesota, dropping up to 14 inches in some areas

In North Dakota and Montana, the first snow of the season has arrived, but on the East Coast the temperatures will reach up into the 80s. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

A rare early October snowstorm dumped snow across parts of Minnesota and North Dakota, including 14 inches in one Minnesota county, snapping tree lines and cutting power to residents who worked to dig out and clean up on Friday.

Some areas saw record amounts for this early in the season, the National Weather Service said in an advisory. Grand Forks, N.D., was among them -- getting 3.5 inches by Thursday afternoon. The previous Oct. 4 record for the city was 2 inches in 1950.

"For early October, this is definitely a big storm," Jeff Makowski, a weather service meteorologist based in Grand Forks, told Reuters.

Near-blizzard conditions were blamed for a head-on collision that killed a woman, the Grand Forks Herald reported.

Minnesota's Roseau County saw the most snow by Thursday afternoon -- 14 inches. The county is in the state's northwest corner, near the border with Canada.

Six inches of snow were reported in Karlstad, Minn., where residents had been forced from the city temporarily this week by a wildfire that burned several homes and other structures.

Snow falls Thursday in Fargo, N.D., which saw an inch by the afternoon.

Northern Minnesota and North Dakota have seen several years where snow fell in the second half of September, the weather service reported.

The region had seen unusually warm temperatures earlier in the week -- including Monday's high of 80 degrees in Grand Forks.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Yeah. It snowed a lot in Karlstad, Greenbush area. But it was hardly anything for my 2012 Ford Fiesta. Was easily able to get to work without the help of the slow plows. Too bad the power lines couldn't handle the weather. My Rural friends are still out of power and running water. But was still able to play cards and drink beer with flashlights! Goes from 80's degree, then fire, then snow/slush. It was funny though seeing a semi and cars stuck on the side of the road. Drive careful be safe.

So apparently it snows in the winter?

        Reply#57 - Fri Oct 5, 2012 3:36 PM EDT

DUDE.... winter doesn't start until December. We just had the vernal equinox.... not the solstice. You do understand how the natural world works.... right? I guess you live in a parallel universe to folks that actually inhabit the planet. What color is the sky in your world?

Doesn't have to be winter to snow Asta Dog. I have seen it as early as September 3rd (50 years ago) and as late as the first week of June here in Denver.

Jaime... Global Warming is simply a load of whatever... This is earths evolution... look back at the last millions of years & sciences speculations. Mother Earth and Mother Nature know how to clean up the messes... this way of thinking about global warming is ludicrous... Perhaps there was too much dinosaur crap that caused the ice age ... come on now Nature and the Universe know when to flush!

Here is what kids today are missing out on. When I would go wolf hunting with my Grandpa I would literally follow in his foot steps as he broke the trail for me. Snow up to my azz. I guess I have followed his path my entire life. No regrets.

Why is it that when there is ever ANY weather article on ANY news site, the crazies on global warming (both sides of the issue) crawl out from under their rocks?

Also, I wish Ohio gets a @!$%#ton of snow this year compared to last. :P

I think that everyone agrees that Ohio deserves a massive dump. But then... you already have Cleveland.

Campaigning with Mitt Romney in Virginia, Paul Ryan attacked the Administration for permitting the rare October snow storm. Ryan said the bad weather was a result of Obama's propensity to lead from behind.

Obama just blamed it all on Bush.

I see no downside of global warming...longer growing seasons, less heating oil and natural gas used, warmer temps mean more rain in summer and snow in winter (according to the AGW model), etc.

U need think more globally....That's why it's called GLOBAL warming. A warmer earth also means melting polar caps, higher elevated sea levels and shrinking coastlines and flooding of seaboard cities.

I am so glad to not be there . I have folks in Minot and I used to have folks in Tolley N. Dakota also , I am in W. Wash . We are having a Glorious fall here. It is causing some problems as it is dry . I hung out laundry this mornin early and it was 50 degrees !!! I know the fires are bad , but I enjoy the sunshine so much I do not care. We are all looking forward to a milder, warmer, dryer winter here and I am ready for that. I feel sorry for any place that misses fall and all it's glory. Looks like a long winter for them folks.

Why do dumb people think Global Warming is not occurring simply because two states in the country get an early snow storm? Idiots!
