STANWOOD, Wash. -- Cougar sightings are concerning neighbors of a city north of Seattle, Wash., including one woman who lost her two dogs.
“My heart is broken, I don’t want anyone to feel that way, it hurts,” Suzanne Karelsen told NBC station KING5 after her family lost the dogs over two weeks in Stanwood.
Others have reported missing pets and many fear the cougars are responsible.
Karelsen said she called wildlife officials but that no one has come to investigate.
“It’s very frustrating. All I wanted them to do is acknowledge this, maybe come and check the area,” said Karelsen.
The local county has only three people available to investigate incidents like this, said Sgt. Jennifer Maurstad.
Due to budget cuts and limited staffing, it needs proof there’s a sighting.
“Often times it’s a cat, it’s a dog. So just to weed through that process and save time we will normally only respond if it’s a confirmed sighting,” said Maurstad.
Julie Goforth said she came within 300 feet of a cougar. “He literally looked right at me,” she told KING5.

Why would an older woman who dates younger men kill dogs and cats?
Obviously no one is choosing to date YOU, DT7970, because you are an idiot. Since you are already literate, you might work on some social skills that will enable you to function in the real world, thereby limiting the amount of time you have to make stupid comments. Really, go to the mall and see how adults act towards others who have suffered a loss.
DT, that was exactly my thought when I read the headline! Great warped minds think alike! Enjoy the weekend!
They are living in Cougar Country! If y'all are so concerned about cougars eating your pets don't let them outside alone. Simple!
Exactly, Bunkie11! Listen people - dogs and cat were DOMESTICATED by man, therefore it is OUR responsibility to keep them safe. Putting them outside to wander around to get eaten by a cougar, or hit by a car, or die by ingesting poison (all it takes is a drop of antifreeze), or get picked up by a lab or stolen. Did you know that animals are picked up off the streets to experiment on in labs???? Yeah, it's a cheap way to get test subjects. My cats and dogs are family members. I woudn't let my baby run around outside supervised - why would I let my cats or dog???
Typical public servants any excuse not to do their jobs. The problem with these attacks is today it's a dog tomorrow it's a 7 year old child playing in her back yard. A Cougar doesn't know the difference. And Wildlife Officials will say "How do you know it wasn't a kidnapping".
You're right veganess, I see drops of antifreeze ALL Over the place
just get a GUN and blast the cougar to hell if its attacking your dogs or pets !eff the game warden if he is to lazy to respond
Simple solution, don't let your pets out without you supervising.
The very same bleeding heart liberals that banned hunting cougars with dogs are the ones that are most likely whining the loudest for WDFW to save them!!! and zuksam you are a idiot that obviously knows nothing about budgets and their shortfalls because we have had to divert funds from WDFW to support lazy assed welfare recipeants in Seattle and that cesspool called Tacoma!!! Every time some inner city welfare single mom has more than one child they need to take that child and leave it in the woods for the cougars ...that will keep puppy and pussy safe!!!!! now don't all U bleedin hearts get all up in arms over this it was ment as food for thought...I would never advocate feeding humans to cougars ...unless it is the fathers of these inner city welfare brats that don't support them and hae many kids by multiple mothers!!!!
It would appear that Cougars in Washington State are actually dangerous (well, OFF the football field, that is). Who woulda thunk it?
;-)
@Tony Helland-1952007
Congratulations. You crammed more hateful, intolerant and ignorant rhetoric into a single paragraph than anyone else on Newsvine, today. And we know how much practice and persistence that narrow-minded bigotry on this scale requires! Your family must be SO VERY proud!
DT7970 . . . Not all cougars go after cats & dogs. I only unsheath my claws when someone tries to cut my Medicare or Social Security!!!
VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN, KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE . . Together we can do this . . YOU Paying for Me!!!!
Walk into your nearest medicad facility: you are in desperate need of a 72-hour hold...with a professional psychiatrist NOW
They're not necessarily wandering around. They could be in a backyard, even fenced, and a cougar could still get to them.
robert are there any untruths in there???? someone shows U the trutha nd U try to discredit them by sayin they are narrow minded or bigoted...I can assure U I am neither!!!!!
What a bunch of cr@p. Look at the news broadcast it's at night. Were they letting their little morsels out unsupervised at night? Do they realize where they live? It's right outsde several National Forests and the Cascade National Park/mountain range! Cougars usually hunt at night just like coyotes so that " what if it goes after a kid" statement is pure BS. A family about three blocks from me let their teacup poodle out late at night. They did not go outside with their dog even though "you are required to have your dog under your control at all times" by LAW. No fence as required by LAW. No leash as required by LAW. A coyote hit it and took it. Just 40 miles from downtown Chicago. A huge cry went out for the town to kill all the coyotes. My yard is fenced with a six foot high chain link fence and I don't let my 95lbs. Doberman out late at night without going out with him. Not becase I am afraid a coyote or other predator will attack him but just so he doesn't bark and bother the neighbors. They probably served up their little morsels to the cat. Cougars are ambush predators look at the heavy vegetation around those houses.
Hmmm... The truth of the matter is this - it might not be cougars. It could be coyotes. I live near this area, and I know that in the more rural areas there are many coyotes. They are sometimes heard, but rarely seen. Harvesting a cat or a dog is quite easy for any adult coyote.
From Seattle, about 50 miles to the north, northeast, and south, it becomes very rural. Cougars would be a rare item. I would bet that for every mountain lion, there are at least 15 to 24 or more coyotes.
The best bet, as mentioned in previous posts - IF YOU LIVE IN A RURAL AREA, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS OUTSIDE AT NIGHT. Also, do not feed your pets outside. If you leave your pets outside at night, they might become a coyote snack. Predators are attracted by the smell of food.
I know of someone who lives in one of the above described areas, and he has a hobby beehive. He had to make a bear proof fence to keep a bear from getting into the hive.
Just an FYI - this week police officers killed a young cougar in the middle of a residential area in Des Moines, Ia. A resident was surprised when he spotted the cat hiding under a bench in a greenhouse. The officers were forced the shoot the animal when it tried to bolt before Animal Control arrived with tranquilizers. The house was only a few blocks away from an elementary school. It was a sad deal.
Hey TonyHelland-1952!- That is really Harsh. It is the duty of Men to keep their Pussys safe, Also the little kids, NOT left in the woods for Pussy Food; I thought We Men Served that Purpose. Just don't let their pets out at night; NOT Just the Big Kittys BUT maybe Coyotes and Big Owls??? Don't Blame the Kittys UNLESS you've got a tape showing Kitty Brutality; Here is a Helpful link to Protect US ALL From ANOTHER Type of Predator Brutality. ;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=og35U0d6WKY&feature=player_detailpage
Hey Rory, you dripping dweeb, so you have an M1 Garand? WOW! That is soooo bad ass! I heard you could shoot down the space shuttle with one of those. We are going to have a tree hugger BBQ. You can join us if you want to. Just bring some veggie burgers or maybe a nice tofu salad.
Leash laws, hello? Unless your pet was on its leash, don't cry.
(I live in an area where a cougar brought a nicely fresh killed deer to a neighbor, just as a cat would a mouse. And they didn't appreciate it, the ingrates.)
100% right, cougars are not dumb animals they won't move into an area if they feel threatened, but now the numbers of them have risen because of the lack of hunting, and to be blunt about the only way to hunt them is with dogs.
It's not a lack of game for them to eat, also because of all the extreme hunting restrictions here, they are just spreading out because of increased numbers.
Absolutely the numbers of these cats are growing in direct relation to the heightened restrictions of hunting!
We can no longer use dogs, no longer bait for bear...and guess what? The very same people that complained about the treatment of these poor little (or huge) wild animals are the self same people crying and whining about their domesticated animals, bear in the city- even DEER destroying fruit trees and gardens in their yards! Yeah, WHINING about DEER!
Obviously many of you have no practical experience with these animals in "the city". These animals are ADAPTING to city life- NOT because we are destroying their habitat but because THEY are breeding themselves out of it by lack of control of the numbers. These "wild" animals aren't stupid, they are highly adaptable.
Daybreak, dusk and night hunters? Ambush hunters? Ya gotta be kidding me! The ones that come to live in the city get bolder as time goes on and fools feed them. They know there is more easy pickens in the daytime, and those easy pickens become children. YOU think an adult is going to deter a cougar from taking a dog? Get real!
By the way- funny thing about curbing the dog hunts...the numbers have gotten out of control in the "rural city" areas so bad that now there are "lotterys" for "special" dog hunts to cull them. Hmmm...
How sad. I would be lost if one of my fur babies were lost. I keep my cats inside at all times.
Here in Oregon, we have Cougars. When I hike I am always on alert. We have had big cat sightings here in town. It is a shame but with so much of the cats "home" being taken away by new housing, they will continue to venture closer and find food. I'm sorry for the pet owners loss. Pets are our kids. They just happen to have fur.
Katprotecter : The fur just makes them a little more special and a lot more cuddly. Our 5 dogs are completely fenced in. We don't have cougars but we have a lot of black bear and coyotes. We have never let our cats out. That's just asking for trouble
I also live in Oregon and it's not so much impinging on their habitat as is we have had bumper crops of deer and elk so much more game for them right now. I live in the city and have had a cougar in my backyard on several occasions. They have also found the carcasses of deer killed by cougars at the local junior college. Only time before a student gets attacked. About 8 years ago, coming home late one night about 2 am I had a cougar run across the road in front of me across from Walmart! We have no shortage of cougars in Oregon partly because they took the use of dogs away from hunters, yet wildlife officers can use them for the problem cats.
Bell, a fence will not keep a cougar away from your dogs, they can clear an 8 foot fence with no problem,
Robert, you're right. I remember reading about an incident a couple of years ago where a cougar climbed over a 7 foot fence, tore through a screen door to get at a 70 pound lab and then climbed over the fence again with the lab in it's mouth to get away.
People have to be vigilant with their pets but you can't keep them locked up inside all the time either, at least I don't.
This is the time of year when the mother cougars disband the litter and young inexperienced males are forced to seek out a new territory. Some end up in the burbs, sometimes close to town. That's why we have the problem now. A little later on deer season starts up: the deer head into the subburbs (which used to be their territory too. Coyote operate year- 'round like raccoons etc.
We live in a 55+ gated park in Hemet, CA. A mountain lion grabbed our small Pug about 20ft from the house. My husband was out with them and charged up the rocky hill while screaming and the lion dropped the Pug and ran. Our pug had broken skin with teeth marks; one on her shoulder and one on the front of her chest, so the lion must have had his jaws half around her. We were so lucky.
We since put up a fence in a small area so our inside dogs can go potty without wandering away and we stand right out there with them, always on guard. The fence is to keep them in a small defendable area, not the lion out.
Mountain lions can leap almost 40 ft. They like to attack from behind, and you'll probably never hear it until it gets you.
Keep your animals in and if you have them fenced, bring them in before sunset for sure. Do NOT leave a dog tied or fenced outside at night.
We also lost our cat when we first moved here. She was used to roaming all night when we lived in TN and would not come in the house. She only lasted about a month.
We live with our park butted right up to small foothills on the outside of town. This is their land and we love it here due to the wildlife and the beautiful views of nature all around us. The price we pay is mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes and various other creatures. Just be vigilant.
Stanwood is not near Seattle. You could get to Canada sooner then you could get to Seattle. the news article makes it sound like its in the burb but it's not. Compared to Seattle or even Everett its a small town. It's not like the cougars are going in to a well populated area like downtown and getting them. I have lived in WA for 24yrs and I live in a town about the same size and have never seen one. We do however have a lot of coyotes. I have only seen them 2 times but we do have to watch the animals at night. Or if you have a small dog the eagles will get them during the day. If you don't like the country life then move to town. If you do move to the country wildlife is a part of it so deal.
Of course they can't robert, but u make it more difficult not easier for them. Fences can block the view better if they're a few hundred yds away than no fence. A fence would more likely discourage one than no fence.
I wonder how all the concerned liberals in Seattle voted when Cougar hunting with dogs was on the ballot? They are wild cats and, unless taught to fear humans, they will prey on whatever they can catch including dogs, cats, kids, etc. People have encroached on the Cougars' habitat by building farther out into the woods, so they need to either accept living with the cougars or practice some type of lethal control. You don't have to wipe out the cougars, just allow hunting of them so they have a fear of humans. Either that or move back into the city...you can't have it both ways.
It would be a sin to use lethal control. After all its man who moves into their home and destroys it. I would think they would have to move them to a new area where they can take up residency. Man does a lot of destruction to animals. I would have to advocate they help them not hurt them. They are the innocent ones.
Agree with Animal Lover-3252817 re: the effects of outlawing hunting. When big cats (and wolves, and bears, etc.) no longer fear humans, first their pets are in danger, then humans themselves (...see California's incresing cougar conflicts). My condolences to those who have lost their beloved animals to wild predators; pls consider THIS reminder when fanatics push agenda to abolish hunting. Done properly (not poaching), it promotes a balanced environment where all wildlife thrives. Preservationists disagree w/me; conservationists agree.
bell, I hate to tell you this but you are already living in territory where cougars should be living, so you should move somewhere they have never been then!
well said I was going to say the same
J Fuentes - I'm a far-left liberal with an Ecology background and I have never hunted but I agree that well regulated hunting benefits everyone. It keeps animal populations in balance (many "wildlife" areas are too small or lack large predators to have a healthy balance) and provides a lot of political and monetary support in maintaining habitats (the local riparian habitats I sample from would no longer exist if it weren't for duck hunters advocating its conservation).
It also wouldn't hurt to get some non-lethal deterrents in the area to teach the cougars to fear people - maybe there could be a sport made of a well regulated "hunt" with bean bag or paint guns to scare but not injure them? That being said, of what I understand about living in/near large wildlife - it's more effective to protect yourself by practicing safe behaviors (not leaving small children and animals outside unattended since most predators target easy isolated prey) than trying to kill/remove everything that might pose a danger (otherwise we would ban cars yes?)
I have an idea, instead of hunting, humans should be using more birth control. The cougars aren't the problem, we are.
Sadly, if you allow hunting the cougars, they WILL be wiped out. Too many people can't keep their fingers off a trigger when it comes to any wild animal that's been ousted from its native and longtime habitat, and mix with us oh-so-superior humans. The human answer is always - if we can't get along with it, kill it.
People need to take their heads out of the sand and get a clue. Many kumbaya-minded people want to be out and away from it all, but don't acknowledge that this is where wild animals are. Keep your pets indoors, especially at dawn and dusk, when cougars are most active, and nighttime when you have coyotes on the move. There is danger out there and we need to learn as much as we can to make this work for people and animals alike. Otherwise, we should all go live in a Disney theme park.
PS: StephAce hit the nail right on the head!
Thirteen years of research shows that hunting can exacerbate the problem--as older males are killed, their territories are filled by younger males that tend to be the ones that wander into inhabited areas and kill livestock and pets. "Robert Wielgus, director of Washington State University’s Large Carnivore Conservation Lab, says more than 10 years of work tracking cougars indicates that losses of livestock to cougars go up in heavily hunted areas, he said: “It’s counterintuitive, and hard for people to swallow.” One reason could be the social structure of cougars in which an adult male establishes dominance in his territory. If that dominant male is killed, by hunting or by natural causes, younger males on the periphery move in. “They’re younger and they don’t know what they’re doing. They haven’t established their territory, they’re wandering all over the place,” Wielgus said. That can cause them to wander into farm and ranch lands or suburbs that older males have learned to avoid."
This research is helping wildlife managers know how to regulate hunting so this phenomena is less likely to occur. But pets are more likely to be eaten by coyotes. Really people, if you don't want Fifi to be eaten, crap in your neighbor's yard, or be hit by a car, be responsible for them. It's extremely unlikely that a little dog in a fenced backyard is going to be taken by a cougar or coyote in the daytime. I won't even get started on the millions of wild birds that domestic house cats kill every year.
I have gone into the future and seen that they killed the cougar to protect the mutts in the burbs.
End of Story.
ExpectUS
Well, Elderscroll, perhaps you could go back into the future and STAY there, until you learn the language well enough to use good grammar. OH, by the way, we killed them in the PAST too!
That time of the month Give Peace?
Actually, Elderscroll's grammar is fine. He might have other problems, though.
Quick! Someone call the Fighter's Guild!
This looks like a job for the Fighter's Guild!
When I was living in NC last year my dog was tied out front and he was barking. I got up to bring him in and came face to face with a cougar not 50 feet from me. We just stared each other down until I realized what he was, and then I grabbed my dog and ran inside. Thank God I immediately got up to get my dog, usually I just let him bark for a few minutes.
I would not doubt that you saw something, but I doubt it was a cougar in NC. The Eastern Cougar was declared extinct in 2011.
Yeah, I agree ... doubtful it was a mountain lion in NC. The Eastern Cougar is gone and while cougars are migrating east, documented cougar "sightings" in NC have so far been found to be hoaxes. Wouldn't surprise me though if they established themselves in mountainous western north carolina within 20 to 30 years.
My US house is next to a 150,000+acre National forest in eastern NC...
Last year I killed; a 8'+rattler next to my 4x4 and a rabid fox @ my front door. The neighbor had a trail CAM ripped off the tree in this front yard, by a 300+lb bear. A semi hit a 500+lb bear and totaled the cab, down the road from us. A few years prior, my 100+lb daughter was confronted by a 300+lb sow, when she was mowing the grass, later we had a BBQ...
Just the privileges of living with nature...
For some reason, they want us to believe that the cougar is extinct in NC, but I assure you that it is not. I saw one last October, clear as day. It was a beautiful animal. I know of a few other sightings as well, one in which the people had a cougar on top of their chicken coop trying to get in. They're still here!
hey boo boo...WTF is a doxon??????????
Im wondering about the cougars..are they hungry or being displaced by something? It isnt normal for them to just come down and kill pets..There has to be a humane solution than just killing them..People forget they are wild and instictive and also need protection. It will happen ,wild animals killing domestic pets..as human protectors of both we need constructive solutions..
Belita: usually a cougar killing pets is a young one. They stay with mom for 2 years, then are "encouraged" to move into their own territory. By 2 years they should be able to make their own kills. However, if the kit or kits are orphaned at an early age, they take the easy route and grab smaller prey - dogs and cats, etc.
We lived in Tucson AZ from1994 to 2007 and I had several cougar very close encounters. I'm a petite 5"2', and according to Harley Shaw - who I had the pleasure to meet - was a really good snack size. But I'm still here. Can't say that for the half-dozen cougars that roamed my area :(
You mentioned displacement. A cougar's range can be up to 200 miles, and habitat is scarce, and getting more so every day. And you are so right, killing is NOT the answer. I don't know what is - I wish I did.
I've got an answer--people stop having so many babies and large carnivores will once more have the scale of habitat they need.
if a big cat killed my dogs i would up my rifle wouldnt think twice make a nice rug.
why not kill yourself ? nice trip..!
Baco, you must be gay.
How many domestic cats are allowed to run free outside and kill the wild birds? If you insist on moving into the hills, you pay the price. How many pets are killed by mountain lions compared to how many are simply ran over by automobiles? Maybe the nitwit who talked about hunting the mountain lions with dogs should concentrate on hunting cars with dogs. Keep you cats inside your house. If you live in an area with wild animals, put up a fence and keep your dogs inside the fence. It is not just mountain lions but coyotes and bobcats will also kill your cats and small dogs.
cougars have a large hunting territory and then don't like to share it with other cougars. I live in a city on the oregon coast and we have cougars in town at the college and in my backyard! Fences will not keep a cougar awaay from your pets if they want them. They have no problem leaping 8 feet straight up so a fence would not stop them. I only hunt for meat and don't even do that anymore, but I would never sport hunt for a cat or any other animal. Likewise, when I fished, I fished for food not sport. However, to hunt a cat, the only effective way is to use dogs. Generally the dogs are used to track the cats and to tree them and then let the hunter know where they are. When there is an over abundance of cougar, eventually they will wipe out the game in the area and then the cougars will die of starvation. What is more humane, hunting them or letting them die in a long lingering death from hunger?
Harry, what does house cats killing wild birds have to do with cougars killing pets? If cougars are killing pets and they are that close to where people live they are a threat to kids and adults too. I don't think anyone has a problem with cougars killing wild animals for food and I don't think anyone has to worry about house cats attacking humans.
BOOO Yah ! Dam skippy if I was a cougar and had a choice between a scrawny wild rabbit and a plump, tender, domesticated cat, or dog for that matter then boo on you. For not being more careful. You wouldn't punish your cat or dog for snapping at a raw steak if the critter was hungry or starving. ? Don't blame me for you leaving a tasty morsel sitting in the open. Your's Truly; Snagglepuss.
"Aye, dog makes a fine meal..."
Taste like pork, though I prefer cat & rice - taste like chicken...
AC in Isan, Thailand
My condolences to Ms. Karelsen. I can imagine how heartbroken she is since I love my furbabies and my animal "clients", frankly, critters in general. Alas, there is no happy medium since we keep encroaching on wild animals' territory. I can't say I know what is going on there, but I believe the focus should be shooting BIRTH CONTROL bullets from helicopters, or in bait, etc. I know if I lived there, I would try to do something with the fencing but then again, what? Razor wire? Or start walking the dogs in the yard rather than let them run around, and then go to a dog park to let them run...maybe stop going to the gym and take up running, if possible. Treadmills are another option for dogs for the heavy-duty running perhaps a dog owner can't do. It also helps with behavioral issues-a tired dog is a calm dog. As I teach in the animal law seminars/discussions I conduct, now with help from my US Congressman, the DA of the first Animal Abuse Unit in a DA's office, and the head of the Legislature, you CAN make a difference. It is election season, time to put our lawmakers' feet to the fire on various issues. Find out who EVERYONE is on your ballot, not just the President, because the local lawmakers are the ones that are more accessible to you. These are the people who can get a dog park set up, and fight the higher-ups to do something about the wildlife situation. Another example of making a difference with your vote is that the judge running is a lock-em-up at the animal abuse stage because the perp WILL go on to harm humans. Plus, he understands about people needing the specialty courts, such as Veteran's Court, Drug/alc, Mental Health, etc. so he is not necessarily a hard-a&#. It all depends on how your area is set up. On Long Island, there are Towns, not in the traditiopnal sense, but more of a township made up of various neighborhoods. You might live in Northport but the Town is Huntington. Part of Northport has an incorporated village...you can run into your Town leaders anywhere-supermarket, Town Hall mweetings, zoning board meetings, when they do meet-and-greets, etc. then each area has a Suffolk County Legislative District. You Legislator is the one who represents you in the whole county of Suffolk. Plus, ALL County residents can stand up in a Legislative meeting on a vote and speak for 3-5 minutes. I watched a tabled anti-animal abuse bill get pulled out and passed after a client's daughter spoke. The little girl went up to the podium with a photo of her and her now-gone little dog and showed it to all 18 of them. The first Animal Abuse Registry in the country is in Suffolk County. We are just awaiting putting the first perp on there-it is newish and the state criminal laws for critters, even "companion animals" is lousy. Yes, we would love it if the whole state has one master system that shelters and rescue groups must check before adoption. This is akin to the requirement of checking the Sex Abuser Registry before you can put in a petition for child custody (and yes, many slip through the cracks or are not caught in the silence surrounding this heinous crime but it is a start). However, doing anything locally is a great start, and other jurisdictions copy. Plus, your lawmakers may run for higher office, including one out here who reached his six-term limit and pondering running for state office. The cell phone while driving ban started with him, as did the Animal Abuser Registry and the druive for banning sales of dogs and cats/pups/jkittens in pet stores (the stores spent a lot of money to block this claiming it is a state law issue but again, a start. Right now, a bunch of celebrities are sitting in the Hamptons, and when they go back to their normal houses in LA and NYC, among others, and speak with their local lawmakers there. So, again, start local, think global.
Paragraphs - learn to use them. Then maybe I would have had the patience to read your comment.
I apologize-long day at the vet w/bad news. Great but busy week in court but the bad news overshadows. Not organizing thoughts but I wanted to use the opportunity to see what I can do during voting season-obviously passionate about it.
WTF does your rant have to do with cougars/mountain lions/coyotes/eagles/foxes and assorted other predatory wildlife that inhabit the land and preying on domestic pets ?....all that and you couldn't say something useful ??? like ?..cougars tend to take prey from behind..by ambush..something to keep in mind for those living out in cougar country , ya' know something other than that whole NYC concrete & asphalt mountain range hillbilly lawyer who want a regulation or an ordinance for all things living spiel blah blah blah..ZZZzzzzz HONEY ! sorry but you lost the plot
Carol, it's people like you why other people have pets instead of children and friends. I pet doesn't try to force their veiws and opinions on their human. A pet will never tell their human what kind of pet they can have. If you have never had a pet, then you wouldn't know that even a pet will have a favorite toy that they love to keep with them when they sleep. Pets make better friends than most humans! They will never pre-judge you. When you see a pet that is afraid of people, he has a reason he is that way. I will put a cougar in a catagory you might be able to uinderstand, A cougar is a bully! It will not attack anything bigger than it's self normally. It generally, (but not always) go after something smaller and easier to kill. Just like most bullies! I suggest you break out your encyclopedia and look up cougars and what their range is and how much area each cougar needs to survive. They are hunters of opportunity and stealth. Find out what you are talking about before opening your mouth!
WOW, lay off the caffeine for 1 and who gives 2 $h!ts about celebrities in the Hampton's and what they think. You sure they are not at an Obummer fund raiser?
I think she meant, in her own way, that there isn't an answer to how to deal with this encroachment problem, she was arguing for both sides of the fence, no pun intended, and that in the long term, maybe birth control but what about right now? How do we protect pets now (and a reasonable way to do so).
The celebrity thing happens down here also. In this world, so many people are watching such and such because she did XYZ. "Ooh, Lopez is here in South Beach..." Maybe, this is a time for that celebrity to use her/his camera time for something better than making another pile of cash. Many celebrities do, but so many don't.
There are ways to deal with it.The EXACT same thing happened in Boulder,CO in the early 1990's.Things took a tragic turn there before wildlife officials would take the problem seriously. But people there have learned to coexist with the cats.
"The Beast In The Garden" by David Baron tells the whole story and discusses what was done to get the situation under control.
Carol Ryder New York Lawyer,
We had a Asian family go through the NC Courts, when they ate their dog...
1. Their pet dog was killed by a car in-front of their home, in New Bern, NC...
2. In their home country, dog is a delicacy, so they prepared the meal and invited their neighbor over for a special treat...
3. The neighbor called the Police when they discovered what the main dish was. The Police arrived and arrest/charges were filed...
4. At the Court Hearing, the Judge dropped the charges, requiring them to attended social awareness class...
It is against the LAW in NC to kill pets for FOOD, but if the death was a accident, no laws were broken...
One thing is sure, these Asians will not be inviting their US neighbor back for any special meals...
I live in Issan Thailand, dog is on the menu in many Chinese restaurants...
People are stupid, when you move into a predator's territory they will eat what they find. And since humans have infringed into their territory with their pets, the cougars have easy pickings. Why should the cougars pay the price for our incompetence when it comes to our expanding civilization?
And where are you living at???
My wife has 2 indoor kitties, the reason is we live in an area where there are Fox,coyotes, eagles and much more live. For some reason there has been more sittings of these animals and people are more reluctant to let their PETS run outside unattended anymore, but it took someones 1/2 eaten cat, and a coyote at someones back patio door trying to get a small dog to snap everyone into shape..I am sorry for her lost.
The only question I have is the man that was comforting her during the interview grabbed her ass??
LOL I thought he grabbed her ass!
you spoke very clear my friend, people are to the blame for they stupidity !
because she thing whit her ass...
You can bet it's the very same Seattle Liberals that are perfectly willing to have the wolves kill my cattle----now the shoe is on the other foot. What comes around goes around. Do you now see where I am coming from???
By the way, wolves also kill dogs and cats---it is just a matter of time.
We recently had a cougar kill a domestic horse just north of Reno. There isn't as much killing of cougars as there used to be so their numbers have multiplied. All domestic animals are at risk. As a pet psychic, I am always counseling clients who have left their pets out and they have had everything happen from an owl taking a kitten to snakes killing them. We must watch them. I also hate the Invisible Fence for this reason. It may keep our pets home but does not keep out predators, including predatory dogs, that can easily come into our yards and kill our beloved pets.
A pet psychic? ROFLMAO!!
i know we move into places that wild animals live.but you must have the right to protect your dogs and livestock.load up the rifle and make a rug
drop dead psychopath !
If the economy gets much worse more PEOPLE may begin eating Rover, Kitty and Seabiscuit.
I blame the obama Administration for totally ruining the Economy and so many Agencies having to make cutbacks as a result. Unfortunately, some poor child will be mauled before anything will be done, and as usual, it will be the barn door gets closed after the horses have already ran out.
VOTE ROMNEY/RYAN RESTORE AMERICA...
Yeah, Romney will increase funding for government Agencies...
When they start grabbing little children and old geezers, you people will stop being sympathetic.
they have killed joggers in Calif!
In Colorado,as well.
How about we be the big men who shot the wolves from helicopters using GSP tracking devices. They were here before we were and do not need us controlling them. They cannot read your No Tresspassing signs as we cannot read thier marked territory.Leave the wild alone and use precautions in all things...RUGS you say? I say Rat Bastards you are....
I thought it was a funny comment. Anyway, human cougars chase the game but they don't eat it.
Not usually. Not Always.............
I married a cougar!
