Sandra, neither are those who partake of the "Opiate of the Masses" either. People of intelligence do not usually buy into religion because they are able to think through and see what is being offered to them by blind faith and the notion of God. The promise of a better life after death is nothing more but a mere tool to keep the common folks in line and toil away for their masters. One didn't necessarily cause the other. He could have been traumatized from the loss of his parents, then spiraled downward out of control. He could have had a mental illness (detected or not) before his parents died. Or, he could have developed a mental illness, such as schizophrenia, that was unrelated to the loss of his parents.

My bet would be the primary issue is bipolar disorder, and there may be other side issues as well. Many bi-polars have addiction issues. Since both of his parents committed suicide, there is clearly a depressive aspect in his genetics. Bi-polars are very suicide prone, in large part because in the manic phase they do all kinds of irresponsible or illegal or immoral things, add alcohol or heroin, and then when the mania passes, they come down and have to deal with all of the consequences of their behavior. Every episode just creates more and more problems, so when the depression hits, sometimes the only solution they can see is suicide.

Unfortunately, getting someone committed is next to impossible. Mental health is not an issue insurance companies take very good care of, and county services are among the first things to go in budget cuts. Also, thanks to Reagan, a lot of mental hospitals were shut down, the money "saved" and the patients sent back to the communities (where, presumably, they can be taken care of far better), with no funding for the services. (Remember, the money was "saved.")

Oh, and don't forget prescriptions. Sometimes people take them until they feel better or are "normal", and then they figure that they don't need them any more.

You are a little off in your time frame by blaming Reagan. Look farther back to 1972 and Geraldo Rivera's Peabody Award winning expose on Staten Island's Willowbrook State School. The horrific treatment he documented there led to a total rethink of our state mental health structure. If you really want to make yourself ill go watch it for yourself.

You cannot commit an adult without his consent until he actually does something illegal. Try it. At best, the mental health system will keep him for 72 hours and then release him, usually without any treatment at all.

You are both right. Mental illness has been mistreated and continues to be. It is very difficult to have someone committed (and I think it should be difficult, but also use common sense) and there are no safeguards to protect people until the threat is crystal clear. He may have kept his distance from family members and there is obviously mental illness in his family since both parents committed suicide. Someone should have been caring for him and noticing his problems. On the other hand, he may have been getting treatment, but as noted above, if he felt better, it is believable that he would think he no longer needs meds. It is the real conundrum of dealing with the mentally ill. Keeping them on the meds that make them better is very hard and so many go off and back on when they crash again.

I would like to know the religious group he joined, whether he was still a member and the denominations of those he planned to attack. Just curious....

If churches were non-profit then none of them would hand out the offering plate during the service and the pastor would know that he has to create his own food stuffs by growing his own garden from which he can then trade or sell to make money for other things that involve money and cannot be traded for.

The pastor, preacher, minister, rabbi, etc. is not in his or position to make untold wealth. They are in their position to keep a community strong and to offer a haven during times of strife.

I don't think you understand how a non-profit organization works. Non-profits DO make money. It is a common misconception that they do not make any money. It is just that all of that money goes back into the business/organization, so that the owners do not gain any wealth. There is a different between making money, and making profit.

And the collection plate at most churches is not mandatory. You do not HAVE to give the church money. Some people just want to help the organization.

I work for a non-profit organization (catholic based). Our CEO makes about $2 millions a year. Blue Cross/Blue Shield is non-profit; their CEO makes over $40 millions a year and any one of their many VPs easily make over $10 mil a year, my brother-in-law was one of them. He retired at age 53 with a golden parachute.

Non-profit organizations are loaded and give very little back to their communities. Don't be so naive to think that non-profit equates to no profit.

Salaries of employees are not categorized as profit (even though in reality they may be LIKE profit). By the correct definition, profit is the money that the corporation makes, after its employees and operating costs are paid.

Churches are simply a group of believers. Though donations to the church are tax exempt, believers still pay taxes. Since believers pay taxes, and are American citizens, they have every right to be involved in politics.
