Sometimes people get so depressed or down, that they turn to alcohol. I doubt this happened because of the alcohol only. Black people make up about 13% of the population overall, so there is no way their population alone can elect any president with just their vote alone. This woman snapped due to her son's violent behavior. She was also a victim of domestic violence by the children's father, who she kicked out and was the catalyst for all of this. All four kids were intelligent and well liked. One was a cheerleader, a senior and wanted to become a doctor.

Alcohol is a legal drug which causes so many deaths. But it will always be legal because judges, law enforcement and a whole lot more people drink .Some are o.k. when they drink while others get redneck and hateful and abusive to others. America's social programs are not the problem here, Sweden has social programs and yet they do not have unwanted teenage pregnancy problems because they are realists. They know that a good education, including sex education keeps unwanted pregnancies low. Teaching abstinence does not work. Although I do think in theory your commenta bout taking parenting classes is a good idea, they don't necessarily work for everyone, and when something like this happens, there are bigger and worse issues than bad parenting skills. This woman is mentally insane. My family has been a victim of a similar crime and I have to say most people who are willing to hurt their own children show classic signs of abusiveness that are easily overlooked for depression or addiction. I think the best thing that society can do for children is start taking "preventative maintenance".

If all children were planned, then yes, parents could go and obtain a license in advance (though I would have to ask what conditions would be required-in some senses parenting skills are arbitrary, what works for some does not work for all, and there are somethings that have wide disagreement about what is better even among experts). What would happen with unplanned pregnancies (which is not to say that the children are unwanted-they might just be a little earlier than planned)? If the parents do no pass the licensing test, would they be forced to give the child up for adoption? Have an abortion? This suggests that people would need to be licensed before they are expecting, and in order to cover unplanned pregnancies, would pretty much have to be whenever an individual becomes sexually mature (since teens do become pregnant), and I would doubt that 11-14 year olds would pass any kind of parenting test (at which point, the issue of re-testing arises, since these kids may grow up and want to have children, and what would be the rules for that?). What would be the consequences for an unlicensed person having a child?

The problem is, that when something really tragic happens, nobody saw it coming. The article doesn't mention any run-ins with child services, and clearly she still had custody (either full or part time) of her children. Had there been warning signs, somebody would have stepped in. I think the best we can do is look out for each other, if we see somebody struggling, try and help them (for example, if your neighbor is having a tough time, offer to keep an eye on the kids for an afternoon/evening to give them a break).

Not only would licensing NOT work, it's completely unconstitutional!!! Instead of licensing, which is the most unpractical idea ever said, why don't we drastically limit welfare. I had five teenagers in my house, even on my most frustrated day I never thought about killing them, I suppose it's because I wasn't depressed or wracked with some mental illness.. Lets not forget sometimes mental illnesses don't show their ugly heads till you are a grown adult heading in to your thirties. I am 33 and my oldest child is 17, she is a senior in high-school and made homecoming court and was running for queen, her dad and I both worked till I took in 5 foster kids and I never received an ounce of state help for them because my husband made excellent money. My adopted were two natives, two whites, and one Mexican. The oldest best friends were Asian and black. The kids all knew if their bellies were hungry or wanted a game night they always had us to protect and feed them.

Don't add more fallacies and group all teen parents, for a better part of my life I have worked with teen-parents to advocate needs and interests for parenting support groups. I am in college to become a forensic psychologist and my husband is doing the EET program even though he is a licensed electrician. The oldest teen is now in college working towards his accounting degree, and the other two that graduated high school are married. Not all teen-moms have @!$%#-ups for children.

i used to live on the south side of chicago, and have moved down south...... its like a welfare zoo up there and im realived to be out of there. My father lives up there with a 7 foot fence surrounding his property to keep the blacks from robbing him. He has been robbed so many times that he put this fence up, and now they break in the front office.... I tried to get him to get a gun so he can kill these animals, but he wont.... Port St. John is not a ghetto. It is a small, nice, middle class community near the Space Coast. Many of the residents work in Orlando and the surrounding area. When the space program was still up and running, many were employed there.

It has a population of just over 12,000 and the median household income is a few dollars under $50K, which is more than $5K above the median household income for Florida. It is also 85% white, 6% hispanic, and just over 5% black.

Suicide has become the number one killer in America. Add into that quick access to guns (which the NRA lovers do not want to hear) and it's a a recipe for things such as this. When people have addictions and people have depression (which we don't know of in her case but the indication is there with the level of alcohol), access to guns makes a very dangerous combination. The first 4 shots may have immobilized all 4 kids, leaving two rounds left in case she missed, giving her ample time to reload and shoot each child a multitude of times. Even being drunk it isn't difficult to shoot someone at point blank range. Also, she may have shot one child and the others may have attempted to stop her from killing their sibling so she shot each of them as well. She had to reload at least 3 times provided that the cylinder held six rounds, which most .38 caliber revolvers do. 19/6=3 with a remainder of 1, the last bullet, she saved for herself.

I just refreshed myself on the original story. This took place at 4:50 in the morning and three of the children sought help from neighbors and she called them back into the home and they went back in. So I wonder, were they seeking help because they thought she was a danger only to herself and they weren't worried about themselves so much? I'm sorry. But if my mom's drunk and got a gun in her possession, I'm pretty sure I'd disobey her and not come back in the house.

To shoot 19 rounds from a 6 shot revolver requires either 4 reloads with 5 rounds left in the gun from the forth reloading or at least a 4th reload attempt with putting only 1 shell back in to finish herself off. Either way she loaded the gun at least 4 times. And with no more info than we have she could have killed the kids at slightly different times or could have started shooting them in the house and chased them outside while shooting them.

Either way, its a shame that it happened but if it hadnt have happen the kids would just grow up and commit crimes and have babies. Whats not given to these people, they steal. It will always be a black and white thing because the blacks cant quit making it a black and white thing..

Assume the gun was loaded, you could call that once, 6 shots fired, I doubt she would load just 5 as a safety measure as only people with gun knowledge would even think to do that, It's an assumption on my part that she is ignorant about firearms, allbeit. So she fires all 6, reloads 6 more, then 6 more then 1 last round to end it, you wouldn't need 6 if you were planning to kill yourself with just the 1, now I'm not a mathematician but I did make it through calculus and I don't need a math degree to add 6+6+6+1 to get 19, if the gun was preloaded, I don't consider that loading the weapon for this purpose, perhaps she did, but my answer was in effort to clarify the questions about how could someone shoot 4 people without one of them getting outside of the house and getting away. At any rate that's only reloading the weapon 3 times max not 4, you don't count the initial loading because there is no rush to load 6 shots before any shooting has commenced. I only offered a very possible explanation, not the only possible explanation. What if the gun belonged to someone she knew and they loaded the first 5 or 6 rounds before she borrowed or stole it?
