'They just decked the bride': Wild wedding melee caught on camera

Police in Philadelphia are investigating a wild scene at a hotel where a brawl broke out between two wedding parties that ended with injuries, arrests and one man's death from a heart attack. NBC's Katy Tur reports.

Updated at 6:40 p.m. ET: Philadelphia police were called to a hotel early Sunday to break up a brawl between guests of two wedding parties, and when it was over one man was dead of a heart attack and three people were cited for crimes.

A guest at the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel shot cellphone video of the brawl in the hotel lobby and posted it on YouTube.

Police said arguments started in the hotel bar and escalated to a melee not only between guests from the same wedding party but also between guests from two separate wedding parties, philly.com reported

"There was an issue with a lot of alcohol fueling the fight," police spokesman Lt. Ray Evers was quoted as saying.

The video shows a chaotic scene in which uniformed police officers try to separate and subdue several guests. One officer is seen repeatedly striking at least one person with a baton. A woman's blood-curdling screams are also heard.

Local coverage from NBCPhiladelphia.com

“Did they just deck the bride?” a man’s voice is heard saying on the video. “They just decked the bride.”

A 15-year-old captured a harrowing end to a ballroom wedding over the weekend, during which he said, shocked, "They just decked the bride." The bride's 57-year-old uncle died of a heart attack within hours of the brawl. NBC's Janet Shamlian reports.

Two people were cited for disorderly conduct and one person was cited for assault on a police officer. That person was shocked by a Taser, according to police.

A 57-year-old man, who police say was a wedding guest, suffered a heart attack and was pronounced dead at Jefferson University Hospital.

Police say there would be more arrests.

The Sheraton Society Hill Hotel released this statement:

"We continue to cooperate with the authorities and as this is an ongoing police investigation any questions should be directed to the local police department.  Our sincerest condolences go out to the family for their loss."

In this video, it appears that the police officers were causing most of the commotion and violence. They looked like they were just hitting people, men and women, with their batons, repeatedly. I didn't see many civilians hitting each other... only out-of-control cops beating wedding guests.

Have you ever noticed, regardless of the time or place of the video, or the person getting assaulted by the police, that it is always the fattest cop on the force that has a weapon in his hands and is doing the beating?

Why do you people always blame the cops for something? If the drunks would not have caused trouble in the first place, cops would have not been called. So much for the bride and groom's perfect day.

One reception had an open bar and the other reception that was going on in another banquet room had a cash bar.. The party guests were caught going into the one with the free booze and taking drinks back to the one that wasn't.. Apparently someone in the wedding party announced that the bar was easy picking for crashers and they got caught.. The fight ensued because the wedding party getting ripped off asked for compensation and the other group told them to @&%# themselves..

When you are in a physical conflict and do not comply to orders to cease and desist by an appointed officer of the law sworn to keep the peace and uphold the law he/she is obligated by the law to use whatever force he/she deems necessary to stop the violation.. You make it sound like the cops started the brawl and went on a beating spree..

1) This video was at the end of the melee. The cops weren't there when it started or when it escalated to a full scale brawl. They were probably taking out the trouble makers that didn't have enough sense to leave and probably continued to run their mouths at the cops.

2) If the loud mouthed drunks had acted civilized the cops would have never been needed in the FIRST place. And I'm SPECIFICALLY referring to those LOSERS who were a part of the party that crashed the other wedding party's open bar, and then told the other party that was funding that open bar to go F themselves when they made a comment about the moochers. I'd have beat the hell out of them too.

I don't blame the cops or the alcohol. I blame the people that crashed the other wedding party's open bar then had the audacity to be rude about it and ultimately caused the brawl, and the death of the man who suffered a heart attack as a result.

Yep, always blame the police for doing their jobs, instead of the perp.

It's not the job of the police to make a chaotic situation and beat unarmed individuals with deadly weapons. Obviously there were people at the party who were moronic but that does not excuse the police response

You dumbasses that are blaming the cops and saying they are doing all the hitting, PAY ATTENTION!! The cops were already there before the moron with the camera started filming. You have NO idea who was hitting who before that! Apparently you are lawbreakers and losers if you are always putting the cops down for having to deal with losers like you the way they do! jackass morons!

You complain about law enforcement all the time. Wait until law and order breaks down, then it will dawn upon you how good you had it. Yes, all of the pundits would have walked in and got everyone's attention adn talked everyone back into their senses.....

And about the mockery of obese people. Aren't you pseudo-liberals supposed to stand for compassion?

It may be that I missed the memo. Was the group of obese assed to the list of demographics which are exempt from tolerant treatment, such as people of faith...(Muslims exempt, because they get picked on), conservative leaning people and anyone who disagrees with the all knowing pontificators who toss out proclamations from what they mistakenly believe to be the moral and intellectual high ground?

"Fat" people have historically been singled out, harrassed, beat-up, ridiculed, teased etc etc. and still, they are fair game for your assaults. Why is this? Maybe you feel that they bring obesity upon themselves, neglecting to take into consideration that sometimes it happens because of factors outside the control of the individual.

Does their obesity mitigate the nice qualities some of them may have?

Or is it just that there are enough overweight conservatives in the news that the obese demographic is thrown under the bus, nice ones and all. The leftist obese members being counted as "collateral damage" or just swept under the rug and ignored in a "saving face" move so as not to have to reconcile the hypocrisy of the slanderous and vile commentary with the core values of the liberal cause?

Or could it be that you actually have the capacity like any part of any other way you would like to group people , to be mean and heartless...? Those qualities are supposed to be applicable to the ones you love to hate.

Any way you slice it, you're being nasty to a group that includes alot of wonderful people.

Of course, it's all too predictable that the response to this message will be more banal attacks by the America hating PLOF community.

Have at it.

No, just stupid, fat cops with zero people skills and pent-up anger themselves. Yeah, the drunken boneheads at the wedding were the morons who started it, but the cops didn't help calm them down much by just hitting anyone walking by. MOST of these new cops can't handle people in a civilized manner. They need to train them a bit more. Of course, considering the low I.Q. of your average cop (anyone can get in there nowadays), it's not surprising. All shaved headed, obese, angry idiots...for the most part.

I can remember when I first got married, I felt like getting in a fight when I found out I had to taker her home and live with her. It got even worse when I called her parents and tried to return her because she was defective and they wouldn't take her back;

Hahahaha Ozzy! You should have test driven her for longer before buying. Not sure how long you dated her, but if you didn't spend at least one year with her to let her deep down "issues" eventually surface (and a woman's "issues" always will in time, usually sooner than later), then you have nobody to blame but yourself.

Oh and learn to cook. I have yet to meet a woman (who is not a chef) that cook better than I can. It pays off big time, trust me.

Exact reason my wife and I didn't pony up for booze at our wedding. It made us a trifle unpopular, but nothing bad happened. My sister, on the other hand, had an open bar for three hours, prompting some over the top boozing. Then - BAM! Fighting broke out, and to this day, people are still angry or have hurt feelings.

I live in the suburbs of Philly, and am friends with a couple Philly cops.

They are a lot more laid back, like most city cops, because of all the really bad $hit they see on a daily basis. They're not like your typical suburbia cop, who will pull you over for doing 37 in a 35, and puff out their chest and act all high and mighty.

SO...if they responded like this to this situation, it was probably warranted. Remember, they just had to put up with that whole Puerto Rican Pride Parade debacle last week. Getting beer bottles and silly string sprayed on them.

I am not surprised by this. I work in a "fancy" hotel in the nation's capital. We sometimes have 2 weddings on the same day. The way the guests behave after drinking is disgraceful. They come to the regular bar from the wedding and are so loud and obnoxious, I have to close the bar doors so I can talk to my guests in the dining-room. I joke with them that there's a frat party going on..

Even in a "fancy" hotel, some wedding guests can be really cheap, refusing to pay for anything, seeking only free booze, but they will come to the bar and run their mouth, so this incident doesnt surprise me. The way younger people behave at weddings is just a reflection of the way they behave in society today I'm afraid. It's all about them, screw other people. Our elders were more polite and could handle their liquor better..

Also note that that MSNBC reported in the headline, "Someone decked the bride", but when you listen to the video, you'll learn that what was said was "DID someone deck the bride"?

BIG difference - one is a factual statement, while the other asks a question. Sad that MSNBC staff are called reporters. They're not. We now know how they lie to readers about important issues like the presidential race and twist and turn the candidate's words to suit their own preferences.

The reporters of this incident are as sloppy and irresponsible as the wedding guests in that they love to give misinformation.

Problem is that weddings include family members that one may not normally socialize with in their regular lives. For people to connect this with Philly---get a clue. This is a nice hotel in a nice neighborhoodand the weddings probably cost a mint, which makes it more amazing. Anyone who has worked in hospitality at any point their life knows that sometimes there are parties where a few people get carried away and ruin the entire affair. It did not look like 300 people, but less then 30 which makes them the minority. Terrible way to treat someone that invited you to one of the most important days of their lives.

This sort of public display never makes the ones involved look good, but, unless you walk on water, I'm willing to bet their is probably cell phone video of many others posting here acting trashy. Tell me, would you know a redneck if you saw one? How about White trash? Some of you should probably take another look in the mirror before going out on the weekend. Add booze and well, lets just say some of you who think you're all that and a bag of chips, do some pretty trashy things in the booths and dance floors at clubs. What is that saying about stones and glass houses?

All these comments... and we all wanted to see it. What does it say about us. Shame on all of us for being judgmental. Sure alcohol was probably the leading factor, but no one else knows what else happened. I grew up in a house that taught us values and manors, but I was also taught that if someone was putting one of my family members in danger, we stand our ground. Not necessarily fight, but defend until the threat of danger is gone. I imagine I am not the only one here posting that feels this way. Say someone came to your wedding maybe drunk maybe not and throws a punch at your relative. Are you positive that you would not retaliate? Are you sure no one in your entire party wouldn't as well? Lets not judge each other, judgement is left to someone without sin. Last time I checked, there is no one here that matches that description.

The only people any demographic as defined by any particular skin pigmentation level has a bad name with, are intolerant, hateful, backwards Bigots.

like any race religion or anything never has a brawl of some sort, at a wedding. not every wedding, but some being so full of yourselves will try to twist it into what ever... so.

I think we should be allowed to know who the stealing side was, so we can be aware if they move into our neighborhood.

No. If this had been a black wedding, the vast majority of the comments would have been about "thugs acting like thugs" and "getting what they deserved".

now you cannot tell me this is wedding both parties will not remember.

Looks like the people were having a hell of a good time. You really do not need cops if a few drunks are swinging away, any more than you need to call 911 if you think you were overcharged at the White Castle steak house drive through. For centuries people have gotten drunk at weddings and gotten into fights. It is only recently that the police have decided to involve themselves in every and anything. In 10 more minutes, the fighting drunks would have been exhausted on the floor.....20 cops for a wedding fight...for gods sake.

If we got rid of half the cops, we wouldn't notice the difference. It is the police officers unions that tell us we will die if we do not have swat teams for every little burg and this ridiculous numbers of police telling the "free" (ha ha) people what to do, just roaming the streets to find some infraction to justify their employment

Some of the biggest turds i have ever met were kids of 1%ers. Privileged little babies who think they are entitled to do whatever they want. They are future liberal elitists in the making.

They come to a wedding i'm involved in and try to crash an open bar that isn't there's and they get one request to stop doing it. Then, if they don't stop, they get mashed into the ground for being entitled little pricks.

White trash my arse. This has kids of liberal elitist written all over it. I wish i would have been there to mash a few myself.

For the smallest of things? Are you kidding me? This is a wedding. In a classy hotel. Take your back alley behavior

back to the fleabag lowlife bars where this kind of behavior is expected. People with more money than class should

be branded so that places like this hotel can be warned not to let them in.

Follow directions and there will be no need for them to force you to comply.

I know the marriage wasn't consummated, 'cause they were all in jail on wedding night. They might have grounds for an annulment.

I'm sure there were alot of normal descent people there who got swept up into the altercation.

Of course we all know if it was you there with a date or your wife (or husband) and somebody hit her with a chair that you would have done the civilized thing and told the attacker how that wasn't nice and kindly asked him to stop.

Another example of what booze does to people. The way I understand, pot makes people silly, not violent like booze does.Yet ,booze is legal and pot isn't!Drunks kill people with their cars, yet I haven't heard of a person smoking pot or regular cigaretts killing someone while driving!Yet our IDIOT POLITICIANS continue to get more rediculous about cigaretts!! They should treat booze the same as cigaretts. Stop encouraging people to drink by banning advertisements on booze like was done with cigaretts!!

just find a way to tax it. However pot wont be an answer to the alcohol problem. Alcohol for lots of people is their drug of choice. Lots of acoholics dont smoke pot. lots of potheads dont really drink much. lots of people do both. Choices.

True but if pot were legal I think there would end up being less drinkers. It's the most common legal way to get your buzz on. So they go for that instead. I think the U.S. would have learned something from the era that they made alcohol illegal. Everybody still drank but only the people outside of the law made money. As far as the drunken brawl goes. I might let you hit my last joint but I wont share my last beer. I think that means there is more sharing and kind hearted involved in smoke than there is with alcohol. Marijuana brings out a different breed of people. In a good way.

Alcohol has no purpose, just like cigarettes. Ban them both. We will be a better place.

Maybe too much $$$ in "legal" alcohol and illegal thc? Lawmakers (aka politicians) love their donations from friends in the alchohol and tobacco (as well as the pharmaceutical) industries. Alcohol & tobacco is a megabillion dollar industry, as is big pharma, and they actually help each other. Legal alcohol & tobacco are highly addictive & make people irreversibly sick with heart disease, cancer and a host of other health problems, all of which gives rise to the need for pharmaceuticals to "treat" the problems. Legal pot would not only curb the need for alcohol and cigarettes, it would curb the prescription of a long list of pharmaceuticals. .....

Outlawing alcohol is not the solution. Not everybody is stupid when they drink. Should we outlaw food because some people are obese? I guess in your case they must have outlawed rational thinking. Please in the future try not to be so ridiculous.

It stated right in the article that one reception had an open bar and the other reception had a cash bar. Cash bar people were sneaking in getting free drinks from the open bar reception and were confronted by guests of the open bar wedding asking for compensation.

Didn't say WHO the "they" were that supposedly decked the bride. My guess is, it wasn't the cops.

This might explain the environment in Veterans Stadium.

Boy they sure take their entertainment, .....I mean, sports seriously there.

I once worked with a guy from Jersey, he thought that just cuz he was from there, he was automatically tougher than anyone from ""la la land"

Boy....., did his conceptual structure of inherent dominance/submission scenarios as defined by geographical parameters ever undergo a paradigm shift as the fists of a co-worker fed up with his empty and shallow braggadocio, came crashing onto his face.

Being an inherently compassionate individual, I had the impulse to intervene in the "altercation"......, but he was already knocked out cold and on his way towards a face plant in the lunch room floor before I could even get out of my seat.

                                                      So much for that stereotype.

Just wow Vinny....this vid had nothing to do with black people--and you are still hurling thinly veiled insults at them or at the very least attempting to get other people to..... guess you've never been to the Deep South or America's so-called Heartland lately huh???? And with a damned name like 'Vinny'--I could also hurl Jersey Shore ghetto Italian-American stereotypes at ya so you can REALLY see what it feels like, but you might be posing so I will let it go..............

So Vinnie, because they are white the alcohol is to blame, but if they were black it would be because they are thugs? Got it. Well at least you keep your racism in the open.

And Mr.Shin, 'Soul Glo drippings'? That might be funny if it were 1987. Loser.
