Officials said a suspected DUI driver from San Marcos was driving at speeds of more than 100 mph when he traveled from a lane into the center median on the freeway.
The collision caused the vehicle to split in half and the car quickly caught on fire.
The driver sustained major injuries and burns and was airlifted to UCSD hospital.

Evidence that money and brains aren't always dished out in equal amounts.
He was listed as being 35, so it is very likely the car was purchased by his father.
Also, the 100 MPH was an estimate. It could easily have been much more.
Finally, I'm glad no one was seriously hurt. I hope the driver operates cars much more safely
in the future.
At first I thought this story was about Sammy Hagar because we all know he can't drive 55.
"...alcohol may have played a role in the fiery crash."
Naw, that was gasoline.
Valid Viewpoint, Valid.
John Robert: his DAD? SERIOUSLY? He's 35 so I think not! I don't know anyone that is in their thirties still driving daddy's car...
Another rich, drunk jackass putting innocent lives in danger.
I'd say most likely a trust fund brat or used his inheritance to but the car. or a pro athlete.
Who cares how he purchased or came into the car. The fact is that he made stupid choices, most likely due the the affects of alcohol. Just another story that should teach its readers that if you drink, you need to be responsible.
The pathetic example of frivolous and hollow reporting of MSnbc that made the "headline" under the NEWS column as "Crash wrecks Lamborghini " . Would they have reported this BIG event had it involved a Ford Pinto instead of a "Lan Boring in it"¿? Noooooo....
This past Friday there was a horrific car pileup on I-75 at Sarasota, FL involving over 47 cars... Forty seven !!! Dozens injured, 27 taken to nearby hospitals and 2 flown by helicopter to trauma centers... It is truly a miracle (if you believe in such thing) that there had not been one single fatality.
The freeway was closed from 3:10 pm to about 9:00 pm.
AND NOT ONE SINGLE MENTION OF THIS in msNBC.
Take a look on what was missing from important News " myfoxtampabayDOTcom/story/19748633/2012/10/05/multi-vehicle-crash-closes-i-75-lanes"
Keep up the
goodfrivolus work NBCSanDiego.com...Deone... http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/10/05/14248343-dozens-of-vehicles-involved-in-i-75-crash-in-florida?lite
My first day at Racing school the instructor said "Just because the car can go 100mph doesn't mean you can". I suppose that goes for when you've been drinking as well.
Damn! what a waste of a great car! (to hell with the nut behind the wheel)
As long as no one else was injured I feel Karma was paid in full here.
John Robert
Did your daddy still buy YOUR cars at 35 Johny??
Awww... Poor Guy... Lets give him a tax break... maybe he'll feel better.
Deone, you are wrong. It was reported. As Alan pointed out.
Anyway, it is a news story because a moron DUIs with a super expensive and fast car. I've always wanted a Lamborghini. And I probably will never have one. So my only request is that if people are stupid enough to sell/give Lamborghinis to DUI drivers, please just instead send them to people like me with good driving records.
Shades of Ryan Dunn. Still miss you man!
Why is this story even news? If I took anything of value from this story it is that Lamborghinis crunch up like a soda can at a hundred miles per hour....like every other car. Also, they should work on better ways to keep the engine in the car. Everytime one wrecks the engine goes flying off one way and the car another.
I'd rather have a ferarri anyway.
shame such a beautiful car was put to waste
Jeff-1592116
Karma will be paid only when the California Highway patrol insists and makes sure that this guy reimburses the cost for all the medivac airlift and the cost that highway patrol incured, if he is found to be at fault.
I am glad he is alive and every time he looks into a mirror he is going to see how stupid he was. Let's hope there is a lesson for him here.
I agree the guy is an idiot, but...
Isn't it curious that a man receives major injuries (including burns to the face), and the headline only mentions that an exotic car was wrecked?
How about, "Man Sustains Major Injuries in Exotic Car Wreck"?
Whether the victim was a moron or not, the theme to the headline should be the human cost...not the vehicle's.
More evidence!
Alextheblade, John Robert also "thinks" the driver was a Kennedy!
Troy1101 - It could very well be a design feature that the car splits in half in a high speed crash. With the engine in the back of the car (really the middle), it's probably better to have it fly off than to have the momentum of it continue into the passenger compartment. The real problem with Lamborghinis is that when they flip over, the doors can't be opened because they scissor up, so the occupants become trapped, often in a burning car.
The headline is just another backhanded class warfare slap. An honest headline would be "Evil rich guy gets what he really deserves." That's the only reason this is "news." Oh well, at least the lambo got an honorable death. More dignified than being t-boned by a prius or something. When's the viking burial? ;)
Shiftlock, The other real problem with Lambo's is they go to f^^king fast! It should be mandnatory with vehicles that excede say 160mph you have to attend a proffessional driving school. I know,I know, good luck with that one, too. If you could afford a car like that the pro-training would be a drop in the bucket, and could save lives. This guy was really lucky and so was everyone around him on I-15!
peanutGalleryTheater,
I agree.
This guy is an idiot--and evil--because he was drunk and was driving with reckless disregard for other people (and himself).
He's *not* evil because he's able to afford an expensive car.
Would his crime be any less offensive if he was poor and wrapped up a pre-owned Yugo? I'm glad there's at least one poster here besides me who doesn't think so.
I see an awful lot of people today looking down their noses on others who--through luck or hard work or both--are able to afford the finer things in life.
I personally don't think there's any shame in being poor...but nor do I think there's any shame in being rich, unless you got that way by hurting others.
Fomenting class warfare is just another "divide and conquer" tactic. Rich people still put their pants on one leg at a time. And as evidence constantly shows, there are poor people who strike it rich in this country every year.
Opportunities for becoming rich here in the United States are everywhere. It seems our media is dead-set on insisting that someone's failure to take advantage of those opportunities is the fault of those who do.
I don't care how he got the car, he was a supreme idiot and I don't feel sorry for what happened to him, he's lucky he isn't dead. His REAL luck is not hitting any innocent people with his reckless behavior.
Deone Hoonoz.,
Actually the I-75 crash was covered by both CNBC and Yahoo. And it is not as atypical of that highway as you might think. Way too many tourists, driving too many miles on too little sleep.
Crashes involving Lamborghini's, Porsches, Ferrari's or Bugaati Veyrons almost always attract attention, because those cars attract attention. Aside from their cost, they all share a mystyque of speed and performance. Unfortunately, any idiot with a spare few hundred thousand dollars to a couple of million can buy one for a few weeks, before he crashes it.
Northbound Interstate 15 is the road that takes you right into Las Vegas.
A whole lot of people hit 100 mph going through that portion of the desert stretch because it's all just straight highway, going straight through the Mojave Desert.
Re; Shartorious;
WELL SAID!!!
No sympathy. Thankfully this inbred halfwit only nearly took himself out and didn't hurt anyone else.
Its da ratings people! The editor tells the reporters to dig up something sensational to boost the ratings, and we have......THIS.
Why didn't somebody get this on vidio. Sure glad nobody else was hust.
Thankfully, no one else was involved in this accident.
I have absolutely NO tolerance for drunks or drunk drivers. Money has nothing to do with it. Drunks come in all sizes and shapes. And all social levels. From the wino on the corner to the latest Hollywood Hunk/Sexpot.
Stupid is not based on social class.
That video is not related to the crash. That was a story about a Chinese fellow who made his own fake.
Pics or it doesnt count!
I don't suppose you saw the pic posted at the top of the article.
Sure where were you MSNBC when I crashed my mom's 1991 Chevrolet wagon.. she could have been let known so she could pick me up ASAP.
I dented up my dads 1962 Rambler and blamed my mom. Beer and Fast Cars.
I never did get the point of those cars. They do like 180 or something (don't really know) but speeds you'd never take it up too. I've been in far lessor cars and done about 120... Though it was the middle of nowhere.
Those cars are made for people who have more money than sense.
Chirs150: The point of "those cars" is to own them because they are a work of art.
The vast majority of exotic car owners use them lawfully, frequently on rented tracks.
Also, 100 MPH in a Lamborghini is much safer than driving 120 (as you claimed you did) in "lessor" cars.
(I think you meant "lesser").
The point is, it's a race-car! Fuel-injected, and they sit low to the ground, so going at high speeds on the freeway, your not likely to see the corners, and center-dividers!
K: Pretty much all of that is true. Of course on the I-15 driving 100 MPH is never a good idea.
And it is true, YOU'RE not going to see corners well, what with all the traffic on the I-15.
GeezJohn, give the grammar police thing a rest, people are rapidly rapping out thoughts here, not writing graded essays. Pointing out spelling errors doesn't make you look more intelligent, it just makes you look anal retentive.
It takes at least a 500 HP engine to haul around a super-sized ego and you're right that most owners have more money than brains!
Chirs150: Cars like this are used as ego boosters, intended to make up for other short-comings in the persons’ life. In this case we can definitely say that at least one of this persons’ other short-comings is intelligence.
You mean I can admire a fine work of art or thoroughbred racehorse, a masterful work of carpentry skills, a computer that can play chess better than a human, an athletic human body that took vast amounts of discipline to achieve and it is OKAY or not? But if I admire a mechanical masterpiece of engineering and design that I am somehow a defective in personality hmm that makes sense (sarcasm ended)
PS I cannot afford one but it does not mean I cannot admire what a symphonic blend of power, braking and handling these supercars are.
PSS The ego and arrogance you espouse of the owners of these cars I have seen in just as many Prius owners.
SHAMEFUL! What a waist! Only 100???--that's an embarrassing speed to crash all by yourself in a Lambo...prehaps he couldn't locate 2nd gear. That rig likely tops 200 easy (depending on yr and model). They do seem to have a nasty habbit of catching fire and that plastic body burns too.
Fuel: No car tops 200 MPH "easily". It could be that the car can do 200 MPH, but almost all Lamborghinis have a listed top speed under 200 MPH.
Fuel: Maybe it is time to learn how to spell.
Waste. Habit. Perhaps.
Also, Lamborghinis do not have plastic bodies. 2nd gear is easy to locate because of the automatic transmissions in Lamborghinis. (Called E-gear, it is an automatic).
Yeah John, I'll repeat the sentiment of my post #5.5 above.
Wow, I didn't realize anyone would take that post literally or so serious! I mean no one innoccent was hurt, lighten up.
Your wrong John! Many have manual transmissions, for many years they have had unibody/exteriors made of carbon composite--that is reinforced PLASTIC.
Not Lambo's that I know of but a few car will top 200 fairly easily, if one can hit 240 plus, 200 is a long way back as each mph at 240 is very hard to come by...think of a certain McClarren or Bugatti. Also 100 in first gear is a bit of a stretch...amazed you missed that opportunity to correct me.
Oh...and Thank You so much for the spelling lesson!--seriously, I'm dyslexic and never could spell no matter how much I read and write.
PS...Lambo is an abbreviation, ie., deliberate misspelling so don't feel the need to correct that, OK? (((Hope my grammar is OK!))
That Lambo can drive >200 mph, doesn't mean Lambo can do 200 mph on some beaten freeway. One rough joint between a bridge and the road can send it flying. Everybody saw those joints.
1st gear tops out around 60mph. 100 mph would take 3rd gear on any model I've ever seen.
Wow, too bad they didn't get or post any pics of this wreck, prob looked pretty cool. Love to see these morons try to kill themselves as long as they don't hurt anyone else. One less idiot on the road.
You have blood lust, or voyeurism, or something?
Old Dad: You love it when people drive so dangerously as to be in danger of killing themselves or others?
What is wrong with you?
perhaps he used to be an EMT.... ? I might miss that too - IF I had the stomache for it.
Good candidate for Darwin awards... oh he lived? Never mind.
Gees everyone knows that to go fast you do it on the autobahn on Sunday morning before the churches open. Saturday night is for drunks and losers.
As a former EMT and Firefighter, I can say that we don't miss the blood and guts.. Soaking my clothes in Lestoil in a bucket after a shift wasn't what I would call fun... but when ever we saw drivers driving like jerks, we would just say 'see ya around a pole a$$hole'.
There are videos of exotic cars crashing on U-tube. Just do a search.
Old Dad,
Your Busted!--by Mr. Litteral Knows All--Johny Boy Robert.
Fuel:
You illiterate schmuck. You continually get YOUR/YOU'RE wrong.
How sad you never learned or are able to grasp the correct spelling and use of YOU'RE.
Maybe YOU'RE just not very bright. Maybe YOU'RE brain dead.
It's easy to spot those who attended public schools.
Oh, and my Father died long before I reached 35. I buy my own cars.
I can break any speed limit with my Camry, or even my F-150, for that matter...
...but I don't.
No biggie, that'll buff right out ;)
I had just taken a gulp of soda and laughed so hard when I read that, I almost choked.
My dad's gotta wicked set of tools. I can total fix that.
What model? If it was just a Gallardo that would not be a major loss.
I wouldn't be able to tell--But I'm certain Johny Robert knows that in addition to the exact temperature of each tire and the age and total mass of the crackers under the passenger seat.
Just for the record...a "de-tuned" or "tuned down" Lamborghini, will max out at around 180. Give or take 5 mph. In order to own and "legally" drive a Lamborghini on American roadways the government requires them to be "tuned down". And of course that does vary depending on the model. A Contache(sp), with an original tune from factory, will hit in excess of 240-250 mph in Germany. This clown was obviously(IMO) loaded or he would never have crashed it. You are talking about a car that can corner at 100mph and hug the road! That is what they are designed to do. Any how, I'm goin to bed. Nothing really stimulating to the mind story wise this morning. Have a good Monday all!
I politely disagree about the top speed of Lamborghini Countachs in Germany. Their top speed was never anywhere near 240 MPH. I think Countachs (including those being used on German Autobahns) have a top speed of about 165 MPH. (Easy to Google it).
(Note that the Lamborghini Countach was built in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy).
I never said Lamborghinis were German. I also have no idea what a "tuned down" (for American use, apparently) Lamborghini is.
Corner at 100 MPH? reading to many comic books or too much TV maybe?
Lamborghini is now owned by Audi. That's why when you turn the key, they actually start.
no car in the world can corner at 100 MPH when it hits gravel on the road or if the driver tries to make sharp turns. the actual cornering speed of one of those cars is more like 60 MPH on roads that are kept clean like a track with no debris.
too may people get cars and truck with no knowledge of how to actually handle them,
i bet the idiot thought owning a Pitt bull would be cool too.
as for the top speed of the European cars versus the cars made to be sold in the US, the top speeds are regulated at lower speeds by governors that are installed in them.
Amateur.
moron
Basic Thought,
No matter the type or cost of a vehicle that one may be driving, the bottom line is that there is really only one maxim that needs to be considered .... operating a car under the influence of alcohol is just an extremely stupid and dangerous thing to do, period.
Peace to all ~
...or a motorcycle. Or a bicycle...
Notice all these expensive cars crashing all of a sudden? I smell insurance fraud.
Hey dummy, think someone is going to try and burn himself to death for his car insurance? Get real!
Poor little rich boy wrecked his toy. Poor baby. Looks like no loss to me - just another scum bag rich boy bit the dust. Don't feel sorry for you dumb a$$.
DUI Insurance is not going to pay for that one !!
This was in Cali. He probably just posted an insurance bond instead of paying for insurance.
Interesting - I would have thought Lindsay Lohan would be involved in this - isn't crashing cars her thing?
Yes, all exotic car crashes in California involve Lindsay Lohan.
Ok...was it me or did the back end of that Lamborghini look like a gutted pig...or some spaghetti with extra sauce?
Nothing could have possibly came out of that melee in one piece.
Stick to Gran Turismo....do not try this in California or any place for that matter.
Hope he turns out ok, given the speed
Too bad about the great car. Hate to see one of those destroyed but the guy driving was an idiot.
wow really? JUST 100mph? That is nothing.. it's 166km/h.. I do that everyday.. and alot of other people do that too.. people making such a fuss over such a mediocre speed is just dumb.. in a car that can do 300km/h or more, it really isn't a big thing.. and then saying "Alchohol MIGHT have been involved"? wow.. the police MUST test any person after a crash, so how on earth do the police of all people, not know if alchohol was involved?
RynH:
100 MPH = 160.25 Kilometers per hour.
Everyday means commonplace, usual, ordinary. I think you meant to use every day.
I doubt you drive 100 MPH every day. (Because that is not possible).
Alot is not a word. Use a lot.
If you drink and drive, only the hiway can survive.
Burmashave!
another RICH idiot.....take his licence forever....
he probably thought he was tony stewart
Yeah, they both crashed yesterday, but Tony took a lot more with him.
try driving the autobahn, it's kind of cool.
