Full statement from Jerry Sandusky maintaining innocence on sex-abuse charges

Following is the full transcript of former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky's statement Monday, which was recorded from his jail cell in Bellefonte, Pa., and aired on the Penn State student radio station:

I'm responding to the worst loss of my life.

First, I looked at myself. Over and over, I asked why? Why didn't we have a fair opportunity to prepare for trial?

Sandusky, alleging broad conspiracy, insists he's innocent of child sex-abuse charges

Why have so many people suffered as a result of false allegations? What's the purpose? Maybe it will help others. some vulnerable children who could be abused might not be because of all the publicity. That would be nice, but I'm not sure about it. I would cherish the opportunity to become a candle for others, as they have been a light for me.

They can take away my life, they can make me out as a monster, they can treat me as a monster, but they can't take away my heart. In my heart, I know I did not do these alleged disgusting acts.

My wife has been my only sex partner, and that was after marriage. Our love continues.

A young man who was dramatic, a veteran accuser and always sought attention, started everything. He was joined by a well-orchestrated effort of the media, investigators, the system, Penn State, psychologists, civil attorneys and other accusers. They won.

I've wondered what they really won: attention, financial gain, prestige — will all be temporary.

Before you blame me, as others have, look at everything and everybody. Look at the preparation for the trial and the trial. Compare it to others. Think about what happened. Why, and who made it happen?

Watch US News videos on NBCNews.com

Evaluate the accusers and their families. Realize they didn't come out of isolation. The accusers were products of many more people and experiences than me. Look at their confidants and their honesty. Think about how easy it was for them to turn on me given the information, attention and potential perks. I never labeled or put down them or their families. I tried and I cared, then asked for the same.

Please realize all came to the Second Mile because of issues. Some of those may remain.

We will continue to fight. We didn't lose the proven facts, evidence, accurate locations and times. Anything can be said. We lost to speculation and stories that were influenced by people who wanted to convict me.

We must fight unfairness and consistency and dishonesty. People need to be portrayed for who they really are.

We've not been complainers. When we couldn't have kids, we adopted. When we didn't have time to prepare for a trial, we still gave it our best. We will fight for another chance.

We have given many second chances, and now we'll ask for one. It will take more than our effort. Justice will have to be more than just a word, fairness more than just a dream. It will take others: somebody apolitical with the courage to listen, to think about the unfairness, to have the guts to stand up and take the road less traveled.

I ask for the strength to handle everything and willingness to surrender only to God, regardless of the outcome.

Pay attention to the words he used Mr. Sandusky does not believe he did anything wrong, he says a young, dramatic and troubled child was the start of it. So I ask, what did Sandusky do to set that guy off? Perhaps the absolute failure of Second Chance or other such organizations to actually do something to help these youngsters lives, without forcing some additional control structure down their throat. Perhaps it is an indictment on the-rapists, in general, who pad their own pockets stringing harmed beings along for years without ever doing thing one to really assist them.......

What the hell does that senseless diatribe mean? Sandusky is guilty. There's no doubt. Your open heart goes along with an empty brain. Sandusky deserves the maximum penalty for his abuse and molestation of the young men that placed their trust in him, and were sexually assaulted by the authority figure he was to them. You're disgusting.

This is just an interesting prologue for the book he is writing.

This turd will always be innocent in his mind - he is now releasing a 'statement' while searching for a publisher that thinks he can sell some books with this kind of purple prose..

There is issues here that still disturbs me, why would you wait for so long to accuse some one of sexual abuse? How can a man be convicted after so many years has past, if a women is raped she only has a set time before the statue of limitations runs out. Now before you all accuse me of being another Open Heart just stop and think about this. I am not saying he is innocent however I am saying some did seem to be well scripted here. There are only 3 people that really know the truth that is God, the perp, and the victim and we need to start really paying close attention to our children's surroundings watch for any change in their behavior, appetite, how they respond to seeing a particular individual. There is no reason this should have gone on so long , if this is true, it is partially the fault of the vic's parent's for not noticing a change in their sons actions. In most cases when around the perp there will be signs to watch for such as fear, panic, skittishness. I pray for all those involved with this case and ask that God will heal all and show the light to all that is in the darkness of this.

@KandyPorterWillyard.....Children who are sexually abused have longer to come forward because they are allowed the time to grow up, become mature adults, who aren't scared of their abuser any more and it gives them time to realize that the real "shame" belongs to the abuser and not them. Women who are raped have less time to report the rape because they are adults already - there are crime forensics that apply to them. Crimes against children are the most serious of all crimes, and the judicial system recognizes that. AND, the kids who were abused by Sandusky were troubled kids, in foster care, etc. who did not have caring parents who could notice the warning signs of sexual abuse. Sandusky is a pedophiliac which is a sexual disorder according to the experts and which is a crime according to society. He has been found out for his abuse of children and now he will pay by spending the rest of his life in prison.

@BULL SCHMIDT....I doubt Sandusky lives in prison long enough to write his memoirs. Incarcerated men do not like pedophiles ... Sandusky will face a different kind of justice system whenever he gets to prison.

You make an interesting point here, but I think I can offer an explanation for the differences. First, when you mention a woman being raped, we are speaking of a competent adult who knows she has been victimized, so the statute of limitations applies immediately. When a child is molested (male or female), the statute may be more generous because it assumes the child victim may not immediately realize they have been victimized. I think the statute begins when(if) an adult takes notice and reports to authorities or victim comes of age. As for how this could have gone on for so long seemingly unnoticed, consider these children came from troubled circumstances to begin with. Even caring parents may have a difficult time pin pointing the cause of the changes in a childs behavior. Remember, often these kids are made to feel the abuse is: a normal way of showing love and therefore ok, the only way they are able to get love from an adult, they are at fault for the abuse, and/or if they in any way tell, something bad will happen to the child and/or their family... the list of ways abusers get their victims to keep quiet goes on and on. The childs goal, then, is to hide the abuse and deny it. As for his adoptive son not speaking up sooner, we can also add to this list the loss of the home and other comforts afforded him by adoption. He did not want to risk losing the lifestyle he had become accustomed to.

Only recently, in my opinion, has the issue of sexual abuse of children been taken seriously. My oldest daughter was molested by a family member over 20 years ago. When I went to the authorities, she was interrogated (at the age of 2!) as if SHE had done something wrong, for over 5 hours!!! And, had the abuser not come forward and confessed, he would have gotten away with it. He was given a 3 year sentence. Upon release, he abused another child and got another 3 year sentence.

If Sandusky is innocent (guilty people claim innocence as much as the truly innocent), then I hope it comes to light, if he is guilty, let him be made an example of. Sad truth is, the only reason he faces any more than a slap on the wrist is because of his position at Penn State putting this story out to the entire world. Had he just been an ordinary guy, it would have been done and over with by now and he would be doing just a few years of prison.

Kandy, the guy that walked in on him molesting a young boy is what is called "a witness". Do you understand what that means? He should have reported to the police immediately and this could have been over long ago. In my mind, that makes 4 that knew what was happening.

This is for Kandy Porter Willyard and everyone else that obviously does not have a clue about what happens when a boy or girl for that matters is molested for years at time. They do not come forward until years later, for example on Dateline a few years back there was a boy and many boys that were molested by their coach, the boy held it in for years and after he became a father and had children that were on a baseball team everything came back and he fell apart and finally went forward to the police only to find out that since he didn't go forward years back many many many children were also molested that didn't come forward!!! AND everyone started to come forward. This happens all the time. ALSO one more thing as a response to this evil! Most of those children that were molested requested to not show their identity??? Question the motive right there people of these poor innocent people? They also reprimanded him for that, for making them go forward and give details instead pleading guilty like he is. Just like a child molestor does, they go for the handicapped, poor, and "bad" kids so that they can say what he said! He said that they were already troubled back then and probably or maybe havnt changed! People wake up and yes the parents need to pay attention, but thats their fault that they didnt pay attention to a sweet old mad that really cared about their kids? Really?? Remember he went after the troubled kids! The poor! Wow I am amazed.....His son didnt go forward until the end (do your research on that one to ) and what in the world was he going to gain? And if they couldnt have kids then why in the world did they not adopt a girl? Whats wrong with girls Sandusky?

I agree with you, Rick. I was coming here to comment that if he was so intent on blaming the accusers and taking no responsibility, he could have done that easily on the stand during the trial. Whether it's fair or not, it's hard for juries to consider someone to be believable if he won't defend himself vocally.

Really. What does he think these boys are ? Whores ? I was nice to you, I took you places, now you owe me sex ? A big conspiracy against him ? I know at least one of the jurors had Penn State football tickets since 1969 and worked for Penn State for 41 years. I don't know about the other jurors, but I know some people were having a fit the trial was going to be local and partial to Jerry. Ten boys testified against him and many were not even called to the stand. His son wasn't called. I guess McQuerry (sp.?) was just jealous ? oh and the janitors ?

Hes very delusional and with all his power and how much authority he had, it matter if he claims his innocence till the day he dies he will remain delusional. He was big inte that community and his family and all the lies, he will never admit guilt because so many people looked up to him. Its so sad that we have to get on here and defend those boys against people that think that all those boys who requested to remain private had something to gain? I am irate! lol

I assume since he was found guilty by a jury, that he is guilty. But I also wonder What if he isn't? The kids nowadays know what to say and do to make trouble for an adult who ticks them off. They are far more knowledgeable sexually than teens and preteens of 30 or 40 years ago. I'm not saying he's innocent but I just think back to that day care center that was accused by the children of all kinds of abuse including devil worship, sexual molestation, etc. And it turned out not to be true. So I just wonder. We will probably never know for sure. But if he is innocent, how awful. So many lives and reputations ruined. I hope he truly is guilty. It would be terrible to think that an institution and several people were brought down by false charges.

I think enough people came forward from enough different directions with consistent stories, so I'm confident he's a guilty guy, and the sad thing is he doesn't seem to think he did anything wrong. I think he honestly believes that. But I understand what you're saying, that we have to be very careful in these cases.

I did feel a little concerned that the trial happened so quickly, while emotions were running so high and everyone was out for blood. Sometimes a little distance is advisable, although for many of the victims, it's been a lifetime. I think there was pressure to get this done and over with quickly to get Penn State out of the limelight.

I don't want anyone to get raped, including Sandusky...I'd rather just see Sandusky's life ended. Remember, the person raping Sandusky in prison (if it did/does happen) is probably someone who would rape others, including someone who may have been put in there while innocent. Sorry, I just don't wish rape on any person.

That being said, why has our country become so enthralled with the thought of prison-rape - you can see it throughout posts here with all the 'Bubba' comments. I find it quite odd.

An euphoric, anti-depressant pill, an alcoholic beverage, a hit of crack, an injection of heroin, all are indeed secondary to the two most significant drugs known to man: denial and rationalization. Jerry Sandusky is an expert on these conditions...just ask him. In his mind he is the victim. Very powerful, this denial and rationalization. Everyone should be so adept at not accepting responsibility for their actions. "I'll have two shots of denial with a rationalization chaser!" What a crock. Lock him up and throw away the key.

That statement brings to mind what Jimmy V said in his ESPN speech but with you there is no sympathy from me or many other people who look at the "facts" because you are a monster that preyed on innocent boys and enticed them because of your affiliation with Penn State!

Facts are facts! Please just go away "for life" and let the healing begin!

To be believed. how many need to say they were abused? 1? 5? 10? More? What constitutes corroboration? Thank God the jury believed the children. He's right in saying it was an orchestrated effort. It was good and orchestrated police work. And the reason it took so long was because of the orchestrated coverup.

Yes, Jerry, everyone was out to get you. Go to hell.

i can't believe he is blaming the victims. telling us to look at them, to "Evaluate the accusers and their families" he then goes on to say "Please realize all came to the Second Mile because of issues. Some of those may remain."

He is basically trying to make us think they were dishonest dirtbags because they were in the program... really? no, i think you started the foundation with the intent to prey on these kids, knowing they were more vulnerable, and perhaps, less likely to be believe if someone reported you.

i already thought he was scum.. but this seals it.

i might, might consider looking at ONE victims history as an option if it was just ONE kid-- but what did all the others have to gain from it? i really doubt so many men would announce to the public that they were molested for no reason- it's certainly not the kind of "fame" an average person would seek. and your son, what did he have to gain?

              I freaking hate you sandusky.

I have NEVER posted on a site like this before. but this got my blood boiling. i hope no one buys this load of crap.

What an ego. Obviously an extreme case of narcissistic paranoia. He never did anything wrong, and everyone is out to get him. Enough, you abuser. Off to prison where you belong.
