Jerry Sandusky gets 30 to 60 years for child sex abuse

MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts talks to NBC National Investigative Correspondent Michael Isikoff and Attorney Jeffrey Fritz, who represents Victim Number Four, about the sentencing in the sexual abuse conviction of Jerry Sandusky.

Updated at 4:08 p.m. ET: BELLEFONTE, Pa. — Former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison Tuesday for abusing 10 boys he met over 15 years through his charity for troubled children.

Danielle Leigh, Tom Winter and Michael Isikoff of NBC News contributed to this report by M. Alex Johnson and Kimberly Kaplan of NBC News. Follow M. Alex Johnson on Twitter and Facebook.

Sandusky — who was defensive coordinator and for many years the presumed heir-apparent to legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno — could have faced as long as 400 years for his convictions on 45 counts of child sexual abuse.

But McKean County Common Pleas Court Judge John Cleland, who was brought in to hear the trial after all of Centre County's judges recused themselves, told Sandusky that at age 68, he would be in prison "for the rest of your life."

"The crime is not only what you did to their bodies but to their psyches and their souls and the assault to the well-being of the larger community in which we all live," Cleland said.

Read the full sentencing order (.pdf)

Sandusky's lead attorney, Joe Amendola, told reporters outside court that he would file an appeal within 10 days, saying he hadn't had enough time to prepare an adequate defense.

Legal analysis: Sandusky sentencing was logical and reasonable

Three of Sandusky's victims addressed the court, some of them speaking tearfully to Sandusky. They told of how they had looked up at Sandusky as a mentor, only to have him betray their trust.

The former Penn State coach will spend at least 30 years in prison for sexually abusing young boys. NBC's Danielle Leigh reports.

"You were the person in my life who was supposed to be a role model, teach honor, respect and accountability, and instead you did terrible things that screwed up my life," said one of the victims, whom NBC News isn't identifying.

"You had the chance to plead guilty and spare us the testimony," he said. "Rather than take the accountability, you decided to try to attack us as if we had done something wrong."

Another said: "I have tried to think of the words to describe how Jerry Sandusky has impacted my life. There are no words adequate to express the pain and misery he has inflicted in the past, present and future.

Lead prosecutor Joseph McGettigan applauded the victims' courage to "speak truthfully" and condemned Jerry Sandusky for his unwillingness to accept responsibility.

"He promised to be my friend and mentor. Then came the ultimate betrayal and deeds. He humiliated me beyond description."

For his part, Sandusky — as he did in a surprise audio statement Monday night on the Penn State student radio station — insisted that "I didn't do these alleged disgusting acts."

Saying he had been advised against speaking at length, Sandusky told Cleland that "as I began to relive everything, I remember my feelings. So many people were hurt, and my eyes filled with tears. It was a horrible time in life to witness, to listen to, be a part of."

Sandusky said he had "hope in my heart for a brighter day, not knowing when that day will come."

"Many moments I have spent looking for a purpose," he said. "Maybe it will help others — some vulnerable children who may have been abused may not be as a result of all the publicity — but I'm not sure about it. I would hope that it would happen.

"I would cherish the opportunity to be a little candle for others as my life goes on as they have been a huge light to me."

After the hearing, Senior Deputy Attorney General Joseph McGettigan, who prosecuted the case for the state, called Sandusky's comments "banal self-delusion completely untethered from reality."

"It was, in short, ridiculous," he said.

Sandusky alleges massive conspiracy
Wearing a red prison jumpsuit and appearing notably thinner than before he was convicted in June, Sandusky was transported to Centre County Court from jail in a sheriff's patrol car shortly before the hearing. His wife, Dottie, was in attendance.

Jerry Sandusky spoke out from jail on the eve of his sentencing. NBC's Michael Isikoff reports.

Sandusky's statement echoed many of the ideas — some of them word for word — that he broached in his surprise statement Monday night, in which he blamed a widespread conspiracy among police, university administrators and the media for his conviction.

After the hearing, Amendola alluded to that theory, alleging that there was "an undercurrent" in some parts of state government to bring down Penn State because of the power Paterno had amassed in 46 years as head football coach.

"Folks, my understanding is for years opponents had ongoing battles with the state Legislature over funding," Amendola said. "Penn State always held itself over and above" other state institutions, which rankled some officials, he said.

But in sentencing Sandusky on Tuesday, Cleland called that theory "unbelievable."

In a statement, Penn State President Rodney Erickson said: "Our thoughts today, as they have been for the last year, go out to the victims of Jerry Sandusky's abuse. While today's sentence cannot erase what has happened, hopefully it will provide comfort to those affected by these horrible events and help them continue down the road to recovery."

The statement reflected how deeply the scandal rocked Penn State and Centre County.

Paterno, who was a revered figure representing integrity in college football, was fired Nov. 9 amid allegations that he didn't properly report concerns about Sandusky to authorities. He died in January at age 85.

University President Graham Spanier resigned in November. Athletic Director Tim Curley is on administrative leave, and Senior Vice President Gary Schultz retired. Curley and Schultz face separate trials on charges that they lied to a grand jury about what they knew.

Penn State's storied football program, meanwhile, was fined $60 million by the NCAA and was stripped of all victories back to 1998.

Make the most of what you're given in prison, Mr. Sandusky. You'll suffer less than you deserve.

Well, I doubt the judge will look favorably upon his blaming the victims and everyone else in the world except himself. I would think being remorseful and heartbroken over what you did would get you a much lighter sentence than denying it all and blaming kids for being molested. But he most likely almost believes it himself...sick.

Hey General what do you think someone who lures young boys with false hopes, then molests, sodomizes and rapes them and he does this countless times over many years? Hey, were you part of the coverup? Why else would you want to be lenient to a child raping scum like Sandusky?

Here's what is true, If he got what he deserved he'd be dead already.

Bud, you need to learn to read. General wasn't condoning what Sandusky did. He said in prison he'll suffer less than he deserves. In other words, General is saying he deserves a far worse punishment than life in prison. He NEVER said anything about wanting them to be lenient on him, lol. Oy, some people on here I swear. You need to read and UNDERSTAND what someone is saying before you comment and jump all over them with false accusations.

This is a travesty! He should have gotten the maximum possible sentence - even though he will die in prison most likely this slap on the wrist doesn't send the kind of message that should have been sent to all followers of pedophilia.

Disgusting!

Now there will be appeal after appeal - how much more will this cost the taxpayer?

We can't spend money to take care of our children going hungry but we can spend millions on this asswipe. I for one can not understand this.

In the Blue Sky World of Sandusky, he's always shmoozing his way out of trouble. My guess is he fully expected the executive suite in a spa-like setting for a year of R&R. Simple words from him would have worked, in the old world.

In the real world, Sandusky can expect the pleasure of anal reaming, followed by rectal remodeling.

Have fun with that, Jer!

A few realities for you:

Reality #1- Sandusky will have to be kept in solitary or he'll be killed by the general population, so he'll likely have it better off then common criminals.

Reality #2- Our legislative and judicial systems are quietly pushing punishment to the masses. What do I mean? Our legislators want to be seen as "evolved" and therefore are against the death penalty as it looks/sounds bad. By getting rid of the death penalty they look better in the eyes of their voters and the "world". What they don't tell you is that they very well know that there is an understanding that prison populations have different treatment for new prisoners whom have committed different types of crimes. From what I've heard, if you are a child molester the general population will quickly know of this and they will take it upon themselves to punish you. You can kind of understand this as many of them were abused as kids, many have kids and wouldn't want that happening to their family members, many of them have seen the results of abuse, etc. so they are more likely to act. So the "clean" politicians know that the "dirty" work will be done by someone else. Something not right with that.

On to the Sandusky comment; I've never heard a funnier comment made outside of a politician's mouth. He essentially said that he was wrongly prosecuted by a consipiracy made up from the kids, the University, the Prosecutor's office, the assistant that turned him in, the media, etc. etc. etc. Man, any more people against him and I'd say it was him against the world. Creepy dude. Enjoy your rotting in prison my man.

I am glad that no other children will be exposed to the devastation, nightmares and harm this man has done to so many innocent young victims. It is truly a travesty so many will carry such scars when they should have had to begin with. If only those in positions of power to do something to begin with, had fulfilled their roles and done the right thing. Demonstrating true stewardship to protect those children regardless of the consequences to the image of the school. They not only failed those students, but all the others on that campus and their parents as well.

True pedophile are actually a small percentage of those who molest children and are incapable of being "cured" once they begin their behaviors. The only such mental condition recognized as being incurable. Usually this behavior starts in the teenage years. By the time someone is caught they may have dozens of victims if not more.Often they have placed themselves in positions of trust as well so uncovering the true extend of the damage can be nearly impossible. Others who also sexually abuse children do so because of impulsive opportunity, lack of normal outlet or a history in childhood abuse. People tend to lump everyone who has sexually abused a child as a pedophile which isn't the case. But for true pedophilia, no penalty given would ever deter such an individual as their brains are literally wired differently. Regardless of who the abuser may be, that is why we as a society must inform our children to let us know whenever anyone acts inappropriately towards them no matter WHO THEY ARE! Thank heavens one more molester will never see the light of day.

I can't believe that this POS has the nerve to blame everyone but himself by saying there was a "conspiracy" against him. What about the fact that he was actually seen molesting a young boy in the showers? If that hadn't happened, all these other "conspirators" wouldn't be facing charges also. He thinks that they made this up to get themselves in trouble and have to resign from their positions? How stupid does he think everyone is? I can't believe that his attorneys are even bothering to appeal his conviction with as much evidence as they have against him. Fortunately, other inmates REALLY don't like child molesters, so they should put him in with the general population so he gets what he really deserves-to be shanked by some other inmate. Being some big guys b**ch isn't good enough, because like someone else said, he'd probably enjoy it. And what kind of wife stays with someone who rapes little children?

Just think, like a couple of Jerry victims, I told the cops twice, but I wasn't believed, and those guys to my knowledge are still out there today too, doing who knows what, though one of them has photos of himself on Facebook still running teenage boys on the same weekend outings where he abused me back in 1970, which makes me wonder how many victims that there are now too?

does it make you even sicker to know that adults who sell marijuana to another adult, serve MORE time than Sandusky? (no victim there). We have our morals mixed up. Sandusky committed the worst of crimes. There were many child victims. We need to change the laws to protect our defenseless children. Prison is a revolving door for molesters, while drug offenses get the 2nd most time next to murder. Victimless crimes should go unpunished, period. Fill the prisons who victimized children & keep them there. That's morals.

Under State Law he was given the "maximum" sentence for his crimes. The "Death Penalty" is reserved for those who commit murder. Personally I feel that in many cases, rape or pedophilia, is actually worse than killing someone and should carry the "Death Penalty".

But in all fairness the Judge, with his hands tied by the law, sentenced Sandusky to the absolute maximum sentence that he could under current laws and also sentenced him in a way that he will never breathe the air of a free man.

NO LESS THAN 30 YEARS, means just that. No Parole, No Time Off for good behaviour, No Plea bargaining for reduced sentencing by admitting guilt. No less than 30 years you evil POS. The No More Than 60 Years is just to be PC and to not appear to be vendictive in his Judgement.

Mark my words. Sandusky WILL DIE IN LESS THAN FIVE.

Wonder what he thinks now; "Is Sandusky's claim true?; that he is innocent"? He'll be getting plenty of showers pushed up against the walls of his cell or during excercise for 15 minutes. Actually, he most likely will be killed in Prison. The Slammer community doesn't like child molesters, because most of them come from backgrounds where they were sexually abused.

"What comes around, goes around".

The Justice System needs to get ALL known Pedophiles locked up in prison forever---no Safe House, or putting them in residential neighborhoods, to find later that your child has been kidnapped, and found dead.

I am thankful for his sentence. I am heartbroken that there will be another to take his place. Society is full of them... believe the children. Give them safe space to be able to speak of such abuses. Teach them from the onset of the wickeds some people are willing to do. And as a society, burn those that do such things to innocent children slowly at the stake. I've heard of several in the county in which I live plead down to intense probation, no prison time, and no registration on the DPS website. Sick. We can't put up with this. They are doing lifelong damage to some. I believe the abuser should pay with a lifetime.

Sandusky is going to prison because he sexually abused children. As far as I am concerned, he deserves a lot more than 30-60 years, and the punishment will NEVER fit the crime. Now, as for the rest of your comment, do NOT try to equate what two consenting adults of the same sex do in their lives to what Sandusky did. It's not even in the same ballpark. It is 'acceptable' for two consenting adults and if you don't like it, stay out of their lives.

Don't forget, they (Penn State student radio) just gave this POS a platform to go on the air and blame the victims, the school, other schools, god, and everyone else but himself for what happened to him.

Penn State, and the men who were in charge, share equally in this tragedy. They fought harder to protect their football program, than they did the victims.

They made their choice, and picked football over the children. I have no sympathy for them.

It costs far more to execute criminals than it does to keep them alive in prison. There are fates worse than death, anyway. Spending the rest of your days in solitary confinement is one of them. He's got maybe 10-15 years left if you use the average life expectancy in the United States (78 yrs) as your baseline. He will die alone and disgraced, and it will be far cheaper for the tax payers. @ U don't say-3994780

Good question. A 400 year sentence could very well have been laid down. In fact there are people currently serving sentences of 200 years, 160 years, and more in Pennsylvania prisons. If each crime were taken into account individually, 400 years or more could have been on the line. But the way the Grand Jury handed down the Indictment and how the District Attorney Prosecuted the case the 30 to 60 was the max. The GJ indicted Sandusky on several counts as we all know, but the DA took what they felt would get a conviction and ran with that. Otherwise the case would still be going on today.

Prosecuting the case collectively allowed the DA to ask for a "no less than" sentence. If they had done each count one by one and got convictions on every single count then each count would be subject to parole, reduction, and/or early release. Therefore, 400 years in todays prisons could have turned out to be 20 years or less given his age and this being his first conviction.

NO LESS THAN 30 YEARS, is in affect a Death Sentence by Incarceration. Because some States that hand out a "Life Sentence" the convict may serve less than 20 years. Now that's ridiculous.

people please, this is not breaking news. this sentencing happened 3 or 4 months ago and it was on the news 3 or 4 months ago. NBC how bout some news that hasn't already been put out there. Keep up with the times.

Christie I believe you are confused. The jury delivered the guilty verdict a few months ago (in June)--but the sentencing happened today.

I wanted to write JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED but that is hardly the truth. Sundusky most likely does not know how many boys he raped. But remember Jeffery Dahmer? He was murdered in prison. I assume he was in solitary confinement, as well. It does not matter how many years Sundusky received, he will get is just due.

There are several young men in this world who have suffered at his hands. And for all those at Penn State who looked the other way, they too, will meet with their own demons.

Christie: He was convicted of the crimes several months ago. He was just sentenced for them today. That's why this is a news story...hopefully, the final article that is published before his death.

In a moment of sanity, when he relived his life and might have felt a guilt, in his twisted mind he knew for a moment he hurt those boys. Then he slipped back into Jerry and blasted the media, victims, University and the system for hurting him. A narcissist and multiple personality disorder at its finest.

Christie, apparently you don't understand the judicial system.

OldTimer-88224, I am so sorry for your personal experience. I had a similar experience, and found out that the many years of torturous, near total insomnia I suffered as a result of it didn't count for anything when I got ahold of a few sleeping pills without a valid prescription. The law came down HARD on me. They couldn't care less about the perps I named. All they cared about was what I had done to get a sleeping pill. They absolutely DESTROYED everything I had worked for in my life. Destroyed my family's life. Destroyed me. Sometimes I wonder if what the law even stands for.

      THERE IS A GOD!

"You had the chance to plead guilty and spare us the testimony," he said. "Rather than take the accountability, you decided to try to attack us as if we had done something wrong."

Typical of that type. What I don't understand is why this poss is able to use Penn State radio station to make accusations on Penn State?

To everyone upset about the "light" sentence, it is effectively life in prison. He cannot, for any reason whatsoever, get out before 30 years. He is 68. I dont think prison life helps too much for people to live long lives. Also, he probably wont live that long. Inmates will be dying to get to him and rape and kill him. Not even the scum of society accepts child rapists.

To the people on these boards who were abused, I am sorry for your pain.

And if anyone here believes in an afterlife, I dont care what faith you follow, this guy is going to the bad place, whatever it may be.

I didn't follow the trial. What was being said was to unbelievable and to disgusting. I did see the different accusations and reports on different testimony however. It still wasn't believable. How could so many instances of sexual abuse continue for so many years without coming to light? I know I heard all about the "cover-up" but how could you continue a cover-up if any one of the victims had came forward? You couldn't. Some-thing just doesn't add up. After ALL these years SUDDENLY one comes forward and brings it to "light" and then they all come BOLDLY forward. It still doesn't add up!And now law suits against the school. How much do they hope to get? If he truly is guilty I have no sympathy he got what he deserves but there is definitely a veil over this conviction. And as for the comments I've read....most are not worth reading. All they do is spew out bias and hatred and personal twisted opinions and lack of intelligence.

        #1.69 - Tue Oct 9, 2012 3:27 PM EDT

This POS PEDOPHILE is found guilty of 45 counts of child sexual abuse and only gets 30-60 years? WTH? At the minimum that's only 8 months for each count, at the maximum it's only 16 months. This is NOT enough justice for his victims! The punishment definitely does NOT fit the crimes. The very idea that this POS is trying to get anybody to believe that this is all a conspiracy is ridiculous, and Penn State should be ashamed for allowing their radio station to air his denial of guilt.

Firstly I don't believe there is half as much "rape" in prisons as reported especially of older prisoners like Sandusky. If anything it's the Sandusky's meting it out rather than "getting it". But in Jerry's case he'll be a senile 98 year old (if he should live that long) before gaining exit. Most likely will perish in prison. Fitting if he contracts AIDS and waste's away. Good riddance to another piece of garbage.

          #1.71 - Tue Oct 9, 2012 4:14 PM EDT

Oddly enough, I actually feel sorry for the guy. And at first I didn't think I would. He's severly mentally ill and desperately needed help, which he never got. So delusional in fact that he was never able to conceive of even the slightest possibility that this might come to light one day.

It's a shame all the way around - and now there's hell to pay. I think that ANYone who does harm to someone else, let alone to defenseless children Should have hell to pay.

No one likes to see a 68 year-old man get sentenced to 30 years of torture and having to defend his life daily, but hopefully it will serve as a major red flag to those who would seek to use their positions of authority and trust to abuse children - that eventually it WILL catch up with you.

I was also raped as a kid and most of my peers have over time killed themselves slowly with drugs and alcohol or faster ways. I myself have disorders I must live with due to the rape.

First it's the pedophile that hurts you .. then the general population goes in for the kill. You are looked on as different and somehow dirty.

It's not a life. That's why so many of my peers are not with us anymore. RIP

Sandusky is getting exactly what he deserves .. and Penn State needs to be shut down.

Ignoring the Nancy Grace crowd who think we still live in the aRoman days where people are thrown to the lions....Think a minute here. Supposing this guy is innocent! Fact is there is not one witness anywhere that actually saw this man particpate in anything illegal and the only one who even came close to saying he saw something was discredited by the jury who did not even believe his story. Each and every"witness" was one who said they were abused. Each had something to gain and if you think they did not have access to each other look at the Syracuse case. Now I am not in the least defending this guy if he actually did it but the Syracuse thing bothered me a bit and the fact that a guy who knew he was under suspicion of doing something unheard of would take a chance and have sex with one of his victims in an open place on the college grounds is mystifying to me. But hey they got their pound of flesh and he is going to jail for the rest of his life but as I said before what if .......

                        #1.82 - Wed Oct 10, 2012 12:46 AM EDT

So to the ones out there that think he "might just might be innocent", that is just false. I believe he did those things and truly believe he knew it was going to come to an end at some time. When he first was being arrested his face just showed resignation all over and he just looked way way too calm to be Innocent. He is getting what he deserves though I wish we would bring back the chain gang days and such so at least our tax paying dollars could be slightly earned back. As for not reporting it and then all reporting at once. Imagine this.......... you are molested by a very very powerful man/ woman in your life, one who is likely your one way ticket to an amazing school, "life of riches" and whatever else he/she tells you. Now you know what just happened is wrong but this person is the all powerful one that controls your destiny, as well as you are just theoretically a broken or troubled family, home, or kid and who would believe you over the person that is a father figure in your life and a very rich and powerful man back in those days compared to you. Who would believe you? your family maybe, your friends maybe, but no one that matters would give you the time of day. They would all think you were trying to get one over on this "amazing person" and might even charge you with a crime. Hmmmm. now this sounds like you might have a chance of reporting this......or not. So now this guy that did these things gets taken down and you hear about it, wouldnt it be much easier to have someone believe you now than when you would have just been laughed at or told you were crazy? I would think yes and I would then tell someone that mattered and could get that Horrible person for DESTROYING MY/YOUR/THEIR LIFE. That is why I believe they all reported around the same time because when one came foward it gave the others courage to step forward as well. As for the Syracuse thing I believe That was a cover up and the assistant coach payed off his accusers to recuse what they accused him of. Thats what they said was their motive from what I remember hearing and I believe he just payed them off to say those things and then moved on with his life. What happened at Penn State I truly believe has happened or is still happening at other places where these people like Sandusky can take advantage of their FATHER FIGURE STATUS.

The other people that have indicated that they have had similar experiences try again to tell an authority figure in this current age as authorities have come to know that these things do happen and do take it seriously. If not I one day hope they get whats coming, if it doesnt happen then hopefully I am rich enough one day to put bounties on these people for you, then we all can just wait for the good news, or at least somewhat good news.

Sadly, some are probably right, he won't be released into the general population, and even if he had, what this sick-o-phant deserves couldn't be delivered by a prison in the US. Life in a Russian jail, where he receives the sort of treatment the Russians would give to their prisoners is more in line with what that pedo deserves...

In my local news in Virginia, a woman got sentenced to 22 years (she is 39) for sexting a 16 year old boy that was in her class. I cannot believe that happened! 22 years for sending pictures of her boobs to a boy? This case here is all about money, status and power. Evidently the teacher didn't have a very good lawyer. Just makes me sick, there wasn't any physical contact(supposedly)

I agree with ram. A polygraph will do no good if he truly believes he's innocent. It would either come back inconclusive or in his favor. The only time they even kind of work is when a person is guilty and they know their guilty and trying to cover it up....that's what causes the changes in the body that register on the test. If he thinks he's innocent, his body will react as such and make the polygraph worthless.

People convince themselves things are true all the time. A polygraph is pointless. His comments are typical of the majority of people convicted of similar crimes. They deny and blame the victims. It's all good though, people of his age don't do well in prison. He'll die of a heart attack within a year or 2 in solitary confinement.

I'm sure he really doesn't think he did anything wrong. That's the problem of a sick mind. It was a conspiracy, turning himself into a victim. If he didn't do those things where the advocates for him? People that he mentored who would stand up and say "wait a minute, this guy did this for me, was this for me, and never touched me?" I didn't see anyone come to stand up for him.

I totally agree. How about "HIS DOTTIE" who knew what was going on in her home and ignored it, or was a sicko too, and enjoyed hearing about all his disgusting encounters? Did they adopt because of infertility or his perverted choice of sexual partners?

The child molester will always deny what he did. I was molested by my uncle for many years and he asked me for forgiveness but he denies it to others and the family. So, as long as there are lawyers, people will always deny their crimes.

Fred: there are many like us (me included) that have lived through the lies. My father (yes FATHER) still believes he did nothing wrong ever to any of us. What's the old expression.... Tell a lie long enough, it becomes the truth. At least to them.

As for this jackrump, well, there's a special place in hell with reservations for people like him. I know, made one myself ;-

Same here. My mom just tried to sweep in under the rug after I told her what had happened to me by my own father. My brother had fought a long battle against cancer at the age of 18, after he passed, I guess the guilt of what my father had done to him slowly destroyed him, but not before he turned on me. (I was 16). My mom just said he was stressed out due to my brother dying the horrible way that he did. Why would a dying son make someone want to sexually abuse your teenage daughter. Hopefully these young men will learn ways to get through this. I'm 46 now-I have good days.

                                    This is not legal advice.

This is at the limits of creepy and repulsive.

Claiming a "conspiracy"? There was not one shred of evidence at trial, where it mattered. Iif anyone questioned whether he could be a greater abomination of a human being than was previously thought, he has provided the answer. Conspiracy? One view is there is nothing greater than infinite anyway, and the latest changes nothing on that scale. The only conspiracy was the conspiracy of silence.

This was all he could muster. It will be all he has to console himself in a cage for the the rest of his life. He is a failure in what matters most--the protection of children in need of protection.

This does not erase the damage to the children. It also does not erase the damage to the University's good will and the specter of multi-million dollar punitive damage awards against the University, which likely would not be covered by their insurance policy.

Collectively, that is the tragic gift presented to us.

Look at this in another light. In addition to pedophilia Jerry Sandusky has exhibited most of the red flags of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, maybe a sociopath also. They are the height of selfishness, obsessed with themselves, and take advantage of others to reach their own goals. They can't take criticism, are jealous and require constant attention. There is no empathy. Spouses and children are possessions.

People like this can appear to be normal because they exhibit that which they know others expect, they are very good at it. I know; I've had to deal with a few like this. They get caught in lies and deceit and get mad because you aren't supposed to figure it out (you can't be that smart).

Everyone is out to get them (conspiracy), and it's everyone else's fault - even the victims. They never admit to doing anything wrong; they are privileged VIPs. They convince themselves nothing ever happened. He's not crazy, he knows right from wrong, he just thinks wrong is ok for him because he's special. Oops! He got caught, didn't he?

Until he admits to all that he has done wrong, this man will never be forgiven by anyone!! Denial is always the first line of defense and this guy is front and center!! He is a coward that believes he did nothing wrong which makes things that much worse for those he harmed. My heart goes out to those survivors. I have walked in their shoes. These are scars that do not go away, they will always remain. I hope the judge throws the book at him; make him an example for those in higher places to know they are no better than the scums on the lower end of the totem pole who commit the same disgusting acts. The 400+ year sentence is a good start!!

Yes, Julie - Sandusky will never be forgiven. Firstly, I don't think anyone could "forgive" him, do you? He believes his own lies and can't understand why no one else will. He will never admit to himself what he did, let alone admit it to the world. He can't understand why it was wrong. After all, he's hidden from his own horrible acts for some fifty odd years. He is frantically trying to hide it again.

What's hard to believe is Penn State radio allowing him on the air and his attorneys allowing him to give such hair-brained excuses. Again, he is not crazy. His brain is wired wrong, born or developed without conscience. His self-interest knows no bounds; everything was all about him. But that's far from being crazy under the law.

His sentence should be the 400 years. How dare he still act as though he is innocent. Once again he is blaming somebody else.... the police... Penn. State etc. He is disgusting and should keep his mouth shut unless he wants to finally show some remorse for his sick acts. And the rest of them that allowed his actions to be covered up should also get the maximum.

Well that he had a honest face, and has not once changed his remarks of innocence, and the boys came from a program for troubled teens. But the way he has been tried and convicted, there have been innocent convicted this way and put on death row, or killed and then they were found out to be innocent.

An honest face?????? Wonder if he put on that honest face when he was raping boys in the shower or in his own home. Get over yourself. Hey! I know! Maybe you could be an advocate for Jerry while he is in prison! You know, send him letters, save up enough bus fare to go and visit him. I bet he would love for you to see his honest face in person.

chris, he had a goofy grin until convicted, an honest face? Really? I guess that's what the kids he betrayed thought before he got his hands on them. This man is NOT innocent. There was a witness by God! A witness who should have beat his ass and called the cops instead of telling Paterno. Why would these victims go through what they have been through just to set up somebody with what you call an honest face? Is that your defense for him? Maybe you are a child molester. Sick. If you knew the truth why in hell did you not come forward at trial? What? Oh, you didn't? You have sent an innocent to jail if you knew the truth and didn't speak up. You are sick and twisted. Hope you don't have access to children.

                                        @ Chris........

I was in a children's home in the 60's as a kid.....I was molested....I told my mom.....she approached the social worker about it....the reply she got...."Well he's a troubled young boy, what would you expect?"

So in your opinion if it's a troubled kid then it's OK to molest them? Do you think that will make them any less troubled?

                                        In conclusion.........FU ASSH*LE

I was moslested for 13 years of my childhood, I can sniff out a pedophine so easily. This is one sick bastard that needs to rot in hell. He does not have an "innocent" face, he is the poster child of a pedophile! Those who think he has done nothing wrong, have no heart. There is nothing innocent about this guy...NOTHING!! I suppose you think Catholic Priests are innocent, too? I despise people who don't take a step back and consider the allegations when it comes to child molestation, rape and incest. The rule of thumb should always be to believe the victim (guilty until proven innocent). The victim always seems to be the one who suffers the most under these circumstances...during and after the crime has been committed!! Walk in their shoes; how would you react if it was your son or daughter? My mother paid the price for 18 years for not believing me. I walked away from the family for 18 years. Only after the perp admitted to it did she realize she was wrong for not believing her daughter (sick with Cystic Fibrosis, straight "A" student, always afraid of people, and too shy).

Chris, they had vmails and letters that Sandusky left for some kids. A lot of what was in those was too creepy for a mentor to say to someone they are supposedly helping. I have never heard of any councelor, mentor, teacher, etc., tell the kids they are trying to help that they love them, can't stop thinking about them, or anything else that crosses the line. You hear mentors say they care for the kids they are trying to help and they express concern for their wellbeing, but never have I heard any of them say the things that Sandusky did. Did you forget that his adopted son was to testify? He had been molested by Sandusky and he was ready to step in as a surprise witness if Sandusky and his lawyers continued to the way they were in the trial. Just because someone has an honest face and continues to claim innocence doesn't mean anything. There are thousands of criminals out there who do the same thing and evidence is found that they are guilty. What evidence you put forth that this was a set up has no place as you are basing it off of what you saw and no real evidence of the kids getting together to plot this. If you can come up with video, audio, written evidence showing that this was a conspiracy, then gather what you have and give it to authorities. But if you have nothing, then your claims to this being a set up is a joke and it's a sad one at that.

Sandusky guilty? YES! Have we gotten to the whole truth of who covered up what, and for how long, and for what reasons? I don't think so.

I am willing to bet that the conspiracy goes a lot deeper than the public will ever be aware, and that those others who were involved in this sordid situation are doing everything they can to make the entire blame fall on Sandusky, Paterno, and the three PSU administrators who have not yet faced trial.

@Julie and all others who have been molested as children - What you went throught was terrible. Even worse, when you tried to tell someone about it you were denied any help. Any adult who turns the other way from claims of child abuse and allows it to continue should go to jail too. Then maybe those enablers would get a backbone and do something about it. Like a number of people have said, why isn't Sandusky's wife being charged with anything? People who live with pedophiles know what's going on, and so did the guys who worked with Sandusky.

Jerry Sandusky is a typical pedophile. They don't believe they have done anything wrong know matter how much evidence there is to the contrary because they believe they are in love with the children they molest and those children are in love with them. He will never admit he did wrong. He is disgusting and how his wife can stand by him or say she didn't know what he was, when he was molesting boys in their basement on many occasions is beyond me.She had to know what was going on. She is just as disgusting as he is. I hope the other inmates find some way to get to him and take him out and put an end to this once and for all. That's the only way his victims will have any peace.

now this is the type of evidence I'd expect to see for a child molester! Several testimonials, victims and a cover up. Remember sexually abusing children is not a random one time event. It is a sickness with a sustained history.

I'd be willing to bet, he never had sex with an adult male in his life. But if we studied pedophiles while they are locked away from society, I'll bet we could learn a lot about why they are what they are and maybe prevent it from happening in the first place. If his situation runs true to form, he probably was abused as a child himself. He may have no memory of it or he may and think that it was OK for him to be abused, therefore it is OK for him to abuse...even though he may believe that it is affection or love and not wrong. It's a screwed up world. They are out there and we must try our best to protect our children and grandchildren. Youth counselors, Sunday school teachers, coaches, teachers, priests...and the list is endless. KNOW where your kids are, who they are with, and what is going on. Listen to them; watch for signs that something is wrong. Maybe, just maybe someday, this will be a thing of the past that we look back on and say, "How the hell did we let that happen?"

chris, pedophilia is about the AGE of the victim and not the sex of the victim. It's also about control. Pedophiles don't follow traditional homosexual or heterosexual rules. Their brains don't work like that. People have even gone so far as to label pedophilia as a distinct sexual orientation in and of itself. The majority of pedophiles are heterosexual men (I think it's around 95%) who are attracted to prepubescent children. All you have to do is look it up, but I guess you know better than everyone else who has actually worked with and studied these people in depth. Heck, there are even police detectives that have worked at catching this sickos, and they will tell you the same thing.

up to half of all males who live a homosexual lifestyle were in some way at some time abused.

This is a typical pedophile remark since in their sickness they believe the assault was consensual. It is also common for a wife to deceive herself about her husbands activities even when she can hear a child screaming for help in her basement. Unless the basement was soundproofed and it wasn't she had to hear them and should be tried for complicity.

I agree Sharon! She should also be tried and sentenced-both of them (she and her husband) are very sick people, and they will both burn in Hell for this. Shame on the school for covering it up so long for the sake of the almighty dollar! They're getting their comeuppance now!

Chriscrossing: really? Oh I have gay friends... but pedophiles are homosexual... really?

You know why this is happening more and more and more? Well it really isn't happening with anymore frequency than it did, it's just with modern instant media - we all know about it. It is that there is no real consequence (sans jail) for anything anyone does or says. It's all PC you know. To be politially correct you cannot correct anyone. They are always right, always pandered to. There is no apparent boundaries, no required self control - why have it? Kids don't get taught that, so why should I deny myself.....etc etc. You see it everywhere.... I want I want I want - so I'll get and get and get mines while I can.

Chris, REALLY? Any parent with any sense will educate themselves to protect their children. I do know what I know about pedophiles from scientific studies which I have read. You, too, if you could read, could educate yourself. Yes, and hmmmmmm? to you too @!$%#. Your time is coming, you will be caught too. I can tell by your "crying set-up" you are a Sandusky sympathizer which you could only (also) be a pedophile yourself. YOU are sick. I think I smell Paterno burning right now.

Do some research RIGHT now Chriscrosser if you still think this is a set-up. It's public record. See if you can get some face time with his victims, I doubt you could. Form a dam opinion instead of a suspicion. There's a difference. You stand for nothing.

                                                Chiscrossing,

Hate to burst your bubble, but the vast majority of pedophiles are heterosexual in their adult lives and relationships, not gay. The pedophilia is for kids, some perfer female, some male. But the one thing they pretty much all have in common is that they're overwhelmingly heterosexual.

Pedophilia and child molestation are used in different ways,
even by professionals. Pedophilia usually refers to an adult psychological
disorder characterized by a preference for prepubescent children as sexual
partners; this preference may or may not be acted upon. The term
hebephilia is sometimes used to describe adult sexual attractions to
adolescents or children who have reached puberty.

Whereas pedophilia and hebephilia refer to psychological propensities, child
molestation and child sexual abuse are used to describe actual sexual
contact between an adult and someone who has not reached the legal age of
consent. In this context, the latter individual is referred to as a
child, even though he or she may be a teenager......

Another problem related to terminology arises because
sexual abuse of male children by adult men2 is often referred to as "homosexual
molestation." The adjective "homosexual" (or "heterosexual" when a man abuses a
female child) refers to the victim's gender in relation to that of the
perpetrator. Unfortunately, people sometimes mistakenly interpret it as
referring to the perpetrator's sexual orientation.

To avoid this confusion, it is preferable to refer to men's sexual abuse of
boys with the more accurate label of male-male molestation. Similarly, it
is preferable to refer to men's abuse of girls as male-female
molestation. These labels are more accurate because they describe the sex of the
individuals involved but don't implicitly convey unwarranted assumptions about
                                                the perpetrator's sexual orientation.

The article also goes on to explicitly dispell the pedophile is always gay BS. I suggest you read it and try to educate yourself.

Oh, and BTW, one of the BIG molestation problems now highlighted is with the Boy Scouts. And they BANNED gays, remember?

Here's a question for you chris. That is if you really wish to speak logically and not just pull crap out of your ass. WHY is there a conspiracy? WHY would Penn State go along with all of this. Everything that has come about from Sandusky being tried and found guilty has done nothing but hurt Penn State. It's hurt the college...the football team...everyone. Nothing good has come from this for Penn State...so, why would they go along with all of this? What, exactly, did they get out of it? Stop for a moment...stop just saying "he looks innocent" or "he keeps saying he's innocent"...and use some logic. WHY would everyone, especially Penn State, go along with something that will end up costing them millions and millions of dollars???

Man has a history of being quick to condemn, only God may know the truth from all this, but it seems to be a set up, polygraph would be a good thing to find out about.

No, not really, since if you really believe you are innocent you may pass the test. And chris, I still don't see your evidence for that claim.

Wow Talk....another clueless person. Yes it's a HUGE conspiracy.... that Penn State will end up paying MILLIONS of dollars on...but of course.... they went along with it because they have no problem paying millions of dollars for it. It's amazing you two...chris and talk.... you post that it's a set up...and yet you give NO facts to back this up...not ONE logical thing to back up your...insisting that he's innocent. You are just the type of people who blame everyone for their mistakes.... you...like Sandusky...will never take responsibility for your mistakes.

Polygraph tests are not being used in most cases anymore because they have been proved inefficent compared to more reliable tests out there. And as others have stated before, if someone really believes they are innocent despite the mounds of evidence that proves otherwise, they would pass the test easily. That test is set up to detect pulse fluctations when a person is lying and professionals have proven that you can fool the polygraph test. This is mainly why you don't see it being used anymore.

When a person is "Brought in for Questioning" they are put in a room and asked questions about a crime. Many many Police depts use Voice Stress Analyzation equipment so they can focus in on the people they think are involved. Once in the "interview room" an entire list of psychological techniques are used to invoke stress so as to "bump" the machine. None of this is legal in a court of law but its used a lot. You will never see a policeman or judge talk about this in public but its as real as the sun. If the person doesnt have a solid alibi he or she can and usually is bound over for trial with the thinking that "if he's innocent it will come out". Of course there are a lot of other things that hinge on that decision but thats the cruxt of it. Sometimes a persons innocense doesnt come out and they are put in prison. Its not the government of our founding fathers nor is it based on our constitution. As soon as the Supreme Court decided that it was legal for police to lie to us, everything changed. When you do take a polygraph the results can be lied about in order to induce a confession or aid in their investigation. SO I ask the question, why would anyone take a polygraph????

@tz-3189354 Something that is glowingly apparent whenever i read the comment sections of most stories is the following: A HUGE number of people are having difficulty COMPREHENDING what they read, hear and see.
You are clearly one of these people.
Where in my previous comment do i conclude that it was a "set up"?
Where in my previous comment do i "insist he is innocent"?
I could go on, but i think i've made my point.

If i appear to be clueless, it is because I AM. I was not present at any of the alleged crimes, so i can not comment on innocence or guilt of any of the parties involved. So i remain impartial.
Personally, i wish this was something EVERYONE learned how to do. Instead of playing keyboard judge and jury.

I only expressed an interest in what a polygraph test may have had to say.

You apparently know something about the case, that the rest of us only reading about it, and seeing it on tv, do not. Hopefully, you divulged all that you knew on the witness stand. Genius.

What we should do is castrate pedophiles as discouragement for future pedophiles, then incarcerate him for life.

Hank - absolutely the appropriate punishment for this and other scumbags. For one thing, it eliminates the 'drive' for committing these atrocities. I had wondered if anyone else was going to raise this as an appropriate punishment...

Look at the names in the Penn State organization who will still have to answer for this cover up. Paterno is proof. Sandusky started the Second Mile. Gosh, read the article. You people are really piss*ng me off today.
