Police: Search for missing Colorado girl continues; body found nearby is 'not intact'

Police search near the 9800 block of Alkire St. on the west side of Stanley Lake in Arvada, Colo., on Thursday. Police are not saying whether a body found in Pattridge Park on Wednesday is linked to the disappearance of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.

A body found in Arvada, Colo., during the search for missing schoolgirl Jessica Ridgeway is "not intact," delaying the official identification of the remains, police said Thursday.

AP

Jessica Ridgeway disappeared while making the short walk to school Friday.

Westminster Police spokesman Trevor Materasso said police have not tied the discovery of the body to the search for the missing girl, however, they hope to have a positive ID on the body by Friday.

The body was removed from Pattridge Park in Arvada -- an area dotted with abandoned coal mines about five miles southwest of Westminster -- by police just before 9 p.m. Wednesday (11 p.m. ET).

Authorities said Wednesday that they believed Jessica, a fifth-grader with blond hair and glasses who loves math and gym class, had been abducted. She disappeared Friday on what should have been a short walk to school in Westminster.

In their search for Jessica, police have dismissed any connection to several related cases.

In one, police in Portsmouth, N.H., said there was no link between an abandoned car with a Colorado license plate found at a Walmart and the investigation into Jessica’s disappearance. Instead, police said the car belongs to a woman who recently moved from Colorado to New Hampshire, and she parked at the Walmart because she doesn’t have parking at her home.

In another, police said they were investigating whether Jessica’s case might be related to that of another girl who was abducted for several hours Monday in Cody, Wyo.

Police explore link between missing Colorado girl and Wyoming abduction

Police discover human remains during a search for a missing Colorado girl. NBC's Jay Gray reports.

In that case, a man lured the 11-year-old girl into a sport utility vehicle, saying he needed help finding his puppy. The girl was released four hours later and was discovered by hunters. Police there are looking for a white man, between 55 and 60 years old, with short, strawberry-blond or white hair and a neatly trimmed mustache.

Westminster police spokeswoman Karlyn Tilley noted there is "no specific connection" between Jessica's disappearance and the Wyoming case. "It's just like everything else they're looking at," Tilley said Wednesday. "They just don't want to leave any stone unturned."

Adding to the mystery was a reported sighting more than 2,000 miles away in Dexter, Maine.

A woman reported seeing a girl who looked like Jessica on Sunday, in a blue Buick station wagon with Colorado plates. Authorities issued a statewide alert for officers to stop any blue Buick station wagons with Colorado plates, Dexter police Sgt. Alan Grinnell said.

Citizens also have passed on tips from Maryland, Texas and Nevada, Materasso said.

In Colorado, the parents of a missing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway open up for the first time since their daughter disappeared on her way to school. They vow to "never stop looking." NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

Police release new photos, video in search for missing Colorado girl

Backpack, water bottle found
Police in the Denver suburb of Westminster repeatedly have urged the public to study the details of Jessica’s face in a photo — a small, gap-toothed grin, a slight bruise on her nose — and a short home video, in hopes they may have seen something or come across the girl.

The only real clue police have revealed is the discovery over the weekend of a backpack and water bottle that Jessica had with her when she disappeared.

The items were found in the town of Superior, some six miles from her home. Police won't discuss what was found in the bag or testing results on it.

The search for Jessica went national, thanks in part to social media and a Facebook page set up to help find the girl.

"Do your good deed of the day and retweet Jessica's photo," hundreds of Tweets urged Wednesday.

Kathryn Scott Osler / The Denver Post via AP

After giving the interview, Jessica's mother Sarah Ridgeway and father, Jeremiah Bryant, embrace at the Westminster Police Department Tuesday.

I am so sorry for this family. I hope they find this girl alive, like Elizabeth Smart was found, having said that I find it rude that people are commenting on how the parents look. My mom is overwieight and my dad has tatoo's so I should be kidnap..is that what people are trying to say.

Let me tell what I learned this week I have always known but it has now it hit home.

A family member of mine a woman who has a PHD is a Physicians Assistant , which is just below Dr, goes to church every sunday, is an attentive wonderful mother, can cook, sew, do it all, she is super Mom..has a wonderful husband, both are very sucessful and people envy this family...the absolute pillar of the community...well guess what lil old super mom has not only been having an affair with a member of her church, she has been making video of her getting it on with men she has picked up at basketball practice, in bars, at a Dr's convention, you name it becasue her lover enjoys seeing her with other men and video taping it for his pleasure. Oh he has a wife at home and while the affair was going they were trying for a third baby.

There is not one person who would have thought these 2 outstanding citizens, all about family and church could ever possibly have done the things they have done...but there you have it, one man she picked up some how got her daughters phone number and called her daughter and started talking nasty to her. Dad is going for full custody and he is destroyed, well in shock really how this woman he has loved for 18 yeras could not only cheat but be even worse and lead a double life.

June Cleaver by day and Jenna Jamison by night...anyway looks can be decieving so don't tell me becasue these people look poor and unkempt it's no wonder their daighter was kidnap..you stupid A holes.

They will find who did this - you don't parol around neighborhoods without someone seeing something. He's got to be close by. And by the other stories - others have reported on the vehicle. They will catch him. And then the evidence will be everywhere - he will have to wash out that car pretty good to get rid of the evidence. He's in the area.

in investigations the first suspects are usually those close to the victim, so that type of thinking is not illogical. I wonder does mom have creepy bf, usually creepy perverts date the single moms to get access to the kids, just a thought. it could also be creepy neighbor who looks at porn(child porn)all day and is finally pushed to the limit with his sick perverted thoughts, our world is full of freaks like this, more and more everyday, and allowing your kids to be on facebook with info about their location, school etc is basically advertising to them, , this is what those freaks live for, especially when the child is vulnerable in some way. be aware.

It could be the mom herself. There have been cases of mothers killing their daughters when they see them as competition for the father's/lover's attention. Don't know if this is the case, but either that mother is completely cried out or she is faking. Remember Susan Smith.

So what about a mom who was in a business meeting without her cell? They don't always interrupt meetings. As a teacher I can tell you there have been MANY times we can't contact a parent right away.

And in another MSN report today, A clown in Southern California is sentenced 10 years in prison for the rape of a 12 year old child. SMH

I have four kids. If any of my kids ever got into a car with a stranger or went off with a stranger on foot, it would reflect MY parenting, MY total f--- up. Most parents simply do not educate their kids about strangers beyond a lame "Don't talk to strangers" as they walk out the door.

I am so fed up with these stories of kids going off with strangers. I've gone over the key scenarios with my kids: lost puppy, offers of candy, offers to drive them to the hospital because "that's where daddy is because he's sick," and even offers of money to help them carry things out of the car.

Most parents don't run these drills by their kids because, what? They fear their kids will "grow up paranoid" or some nonsense like that? I have literally told my kids, "If a man holds up a picture of a dog and says help me find him," to sprint as fast as you can away from that man. I've also told my kids that if I ever find out they took a ride from a stranger, including someone claiming to be a new teacher at their school or someone who knows me, they will get in MORE trouble from ME than what any stranger could do! Whatever it takes!

So many parents are just PLAIN WIMPS.

Jane H you have it right. I hope this is not another case like what we had in San Diego Area. Two girls were killed by a pedophile who had been released from prison. He was able to hide Amber Dubois's body successfully but not Chelsa King.

We need to stop giving pedophile's another chance. Normally what seems to happen is a pedophile just learn's to hide their "evidence."

My heart goes out to this family.

I have read about that case. Horrible for those two girls. Did you know their murderer also fathered twins while he was out on parole. His mother worked at Scripps. In CA they let them all out after a few months, then a lot of them go right back out and continue raping and murdering children. CA laws suck and the defense lawyers who get so many of them off should be made to have their kids babysat by the pedifiles they set free.

If the police can't identify the body they found as male or female and approximate age. I would really be worried about the qualifications needed to become a police officer in that jurisdiction, I believe anyone could identify the sex of a body found. Also, how many bodies of missing people are they looking for in that area??? ... The one question no one ever answered is "Who was at home watching her while Mom worked the night shift?" She was too young to be left home alone....Sill so many questions and no information. I hope she comes home safely but I seriously doubt it.

It's been reported by some Denver news that the body is 'not intact', very likely dismembered and maybe not whole or complete, therefore extremely difficult to identify. I also read somewhere that her grandma watched her at night.

Yes, I read that the 'body was missing some pieces.'

Does mom have a boyfriend or a "trusted family friend" or a special Uncle? Usually in so many of these cases that is who abducted the child.

Although dad is a convicted felon, he has been cleared, but what about his cronies hanging around mom?

A few weeks ago a little cheerleader was abducted from her home while mom was at work. A guy was arrested. He's not talking. Mom said he was a "trusted family friend". Turns out he was a boyfriend and handyman with a criminal record a mile long. There are so many bastards out there preying on kids. Moms need to be very vigilant.

remember not too long ago, mom's so called friend in Illinois(not sure) was watching her child that went missing and ended up dismembered in his freezer?

It is possible they are not releasing details for a reason, maybe a good sign that they will catch the freak. These sick loser freaks also are delusional and think they are sly in ordet to override their true sick patheticness.

I've said this once and I will say it again. I was a correctional officer in juvenile corrections for almost 6 years, and almost 1/2 of the offenders just in my building were sex offenders and about 99% of those offenses were committed against children, and we didn't separate anybody according to their offenses. Most of them had multiple victims. There were 6 buildings on the grounds that housed criminals. There were about the same number of sex offenders in each building. With that being said.....that is just the facility I worked in. Count the number of them in all of the juvenile facilities, the number of adult offenders in all of the adult facilities just in Colorado, then add the rest of them up in the rest of the states in the country, then you have to realize those are just the ones that were caught and are in jail. Add the ones that are not in jail and that have been caught and released, and then add how many are out there committing these offenses that have not yet been caught. People!!!!!!! There are literally thousands of them out there!!!! Whether it was a crime of opportunity or planned, it doesn't matter! Protect your children as much as you possibly can!!! Some people do not even know that is is so easy for their children to be in that kind of danger. I am sure that family is reeling in pain. Learn from this story, and stop being mean to the family. I know treatment doesn't work for these dirtbags. I laughed at the worthless treatment sessions these scumbags would attend with the clinicians. They would tell me to my face that they would do it again. They just went through the motions and treatment didn't help one bit. My husband and I keep our son in our sights at all times. Also I'd say about 99% of the offenders knew their victims either by being family members of their victims, "friends" that they made with with the victims or their parents, or their parents babysat the victims. My son is very independent-I am the one who's activities revolve around what my son is interested in. You make that sacrifice as a parent, and I enjoy every moment of that sacrifice.

My heart goes out to the parents, family and friends of this missing girl. The part of not knowing is worse than finding her dead for at least they can find some peace of mind. I know it sounds like the ultimate violation of privacy, but children should have a small implant that can be detected when missing, much like a dog. Also, cell phones to call for help and be tracked if abducted.

I'm sure all of you that want to blame the parents live right by them and know them well. Otherwise it doeesn't say to much for you or the type of people you are. What's sad is that a 10 year old girl can't walk a couple of blocks down the street without having to fear for her wellbeing. If you want to start to solve this problem to make streets safe again you need to have a justice system that has some bite. When the person is caught and proven guilty , don't burden society by putting him in prison, a ten foot piece of rope is all you need. Costs very little and hardly anyone will miss the low life. It's plumb silly to harp about parenting skills ( even though the ones that talked about parenting are perfect parents) lets get to the problem and solve that. Lets make our streets safe for our children again. The little girl is missing and probably dead and you want to worry about parenting skills. We all can't be as perfect as you are , but lets stay on the problem . You haven't walked in those parents shoes so why don't you stay away from even saying what kind of people they are. Some of you are part of the problem with the country.

This comment is for all those above who are blaming the mother of this poor victim. The parents to blame in this situation are the ones who raised the sick person who took and probably murdered this child. This girls mother did nothing wrong. Women should be able to walk where ever we want without fear of evil, sick men. And children should be able to walk 3 blocks to ride the bus to school without fear of being abducted. Time to take our freedoms back.

It's STANDLEY Lake, not Stanley Lake. Seems to me , the guy who saw/found the backpack and left it there until he /wife returned home , and only put a note online to come get the backpack arises concerns. Why leave it there and not bring it inside. A kid in my neighborhood was picked on, his backpack thrown aside, I found papers recent, with school name and teacher's name/email. I emailed the teacher , who contacted the mom and they came by to get the backpack, which I brought inside due to weather/rain. very odd for a backpack to be just left outside on a weekend, no less. Very odd, and at that time of night, too. Especially with all the news re the Amber Alerts, no one could have missed it. Really, not in that neighborhood /not familiar. ODD.

Thanks for the correct on the lake name, I should have caught that myself. You leave the evidence where it is found just in case there is forensic evidence around it. e.g. the mud on the pack does not match the mud around it, footprints, whatever. You let the police and the forensics people handle it. Still the finder should have called the police right away.

@AMY LAVALEE...are you living in a bubble??? This isn't 1854! We as parents would love to be able to protect our children from all of the ills of the world but of course that's not possible and yes, we have to let them have some independence. HOWEVER, we also have to use common sense and be as diligent as possible. As Tacy commented before, there was NO REASON the mom couldn't have walked her daughter to the bus stop. NONE! It doesn't matter that the child was 10 and could walk alone. SO WHAT! Maybe if she was walking with others from the time she left her door to the bus stop, but NEVER alone. We have always lived in an unsafe world but it seems to get worse on a daily basis.

I don't care if mom worked three shifts straight and everyday crawled from her car to her front door after work, she still could have driven Jessica to the meeting place or bus stop. My mom drove me the three blocks to my bus stop every morning before she went to work and I sat with here until the bus came. We know that kids are abducted within a block of their destination so 3 blocks is like 20 miles! I agree that we don't want to play Monday morning quarterback and blame the mom because she is suffering enough. Still, I believe she should have been more aware and you too! Not to mention, she didn't get the call until 8 hours later because she was asleep. What?! When I am home during the day, regardless of what I am doing, my cell is near me just in case the school calls. I can be dead dog tired but I have my phone ready just in case. It isn't being over protective but meeting the basic needs of protection for my kids. Am I perfect? Heck, no! BUT those of us who are parents know that we hold that role 24/7 for the rest of our lives-- sick, healthy, tired, energized, rich, broke, single, married, etc. It is what it is and that is our job.

What? So dead bodies are just laying around in the area and they won't or can't say if it is related to this case? It has to be her. They are holding back for some reason that has to do with cause of death or something that might lead them to killer. If it is not her, then they need to treat it like they would any dead child, not just a statement like, "we don't think it is related to this case" very sad :(

My sister and I walked to and from elementary school from 1949-1955. We attended what is called a rural one-room school in SE Iowa. The distance, 1/2 mile each way along a major US highway back in the day, US 34. We never gave one thought to abduction, only to stay far enough away from the traffic.

This school opened in the late 1800's and remained open until 1969. About 30 kids attended during any given year. Kids came from all directions, some walking 3 miles one way. I don't recall anyone being driven to school until perhaps the mid-to-late 60's when people in the area started to own more than one day (dad's drove the only car to and from work). No accidents. No abductions. No issues.

Sorry, but the world did not seem to suck back then.

A rapist is not dumb enough to give the girl he raped back to anyone.... he's going to cover up any evidence of his actions by killing her, she's probably already dead by now, also a rapist does not like to see little girls suffer, he only wants to rape her until he is satisfied with her but he wont feed her, bathe her, clothe her or take care of her, he must kill his victimm quickly to shorten the memory of the event making it easier to forget

Cold eyes comment reads somewhat like a profile. Simply because he has some insight on how a criminals mind works, does not make him suspect. That were the case, all cops should not be trusted. I would assume any kidnap/rapist/murder would toss the body into one of the many mines scattered around the area where the victim was found. That she was left in an area so it could be found shows something more than a cold hearted murder/rapist.

what about the ability to decapitate or dismember? I'd say quite a psychopath

My heart just breaks for these parents. The school system where I live just this year condensed the bus stops so that my middle schooler has to walk two blocks to his designated bus stop. The street curves and there is no way to keep him in view the whole way down. None of the middle school parents are walking their kids to the bus stop and some of the kids ride their bikes. My son gets a ride to school from us. This girl who is missing would be in middle school next year. I think maybe some of the schools need to rethink how far away their bus stops are for the kids .
