A 22-year-old student fell 11 stories from a residence hall at Washington State University in Pullman and survived, according to a university spokesman.
The student fell from an 11th-story window of a room in Orton Hall about 10 p.m. Wednesday, the website of campus radio station KQQQ reported.
University spokesman Darin Watkins told the Spokane Spokesman-Review that the male junior was flown by helicopter to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.
“It’s almost miraculous he’s alive and we’re really hoping for the best,” Watkins told the newspaper.
The Spokesman-Review said that trees beside the building broke the student’s fall and that he landed in grass. The student was conscious when emergency crews got there, the report said.
Campus police said alcohol was not involved.
It was the fourth fall this semester involving students at WSU or the nearby University of Idaho, according to KQQQ and the Spokesman-Review.
WSU is a public university based in Pullman in eastern Washington about 75 miles south of Spokane near the Idaho state line. There are about 21,000 students on the Pullman campus.

Somebody put some bars on those windows. Evidently physics isn't fully understood by some on students on that campus.
He MUST have feline in him! Holy SHI+!
They're not called the WSU Cougars for nothing
When paramedics arrived the student said "Help I've fallen and can't get up" so they set him up with a first alert necklace.
In the grand scheme of life I think it can be said that this young man already aced his finals! This should put everything else, from this point on, in proper perspective for him.
A 22 year old man would not just fall from a 10 story high building unless something was amiss. If alcohol was not involved, then it must have been drugs, attempted suicide, attempted murder, or fainting.
Oh no, stupidity will suffice as a substitute for any of those. And stupidity has nothing to do with intellect, it's a lack of applied common sense.
...there are many darwin awards given to people who decide to get a running start when trying to 'spit for distance' from a window.
Wouldn't that be cheating if he jumps out the window and then spits when he hits the ground?
Maybe they should put nets around these dorms like the Foxconn factory in China did.
Maybe they should start teaching walking 101 in these college classes. He was probably walking and texting at the same time.
It had to be a "Hey, watch this" things. He either tried to see how far he could lean out a window, or more likely tried to climb from one window to the next on either a dare or because he locked his keys in his own room.
All I can say is, White peoples.
So if it wasn't alcohol related then it was just plain stupidity.
Weep for the future.
He must have made bunk beds to make more room for activities! Not enough room still, I guess!
If you read between the lines, this was probably a suicide jump.
Damn gravity............gets them everytime.
What?!
In college I learned in my physics class that there is no such thing as gravity.
Actually, we figured out that the Earth sucks. ;-)
That's a mean comment doctor Jim. You pretty much represent a lot of folks on the internet. Stupid and hostile. You are the thing to worry about for our future.
maybe this is a cover up. He really was on meth.
Nicely played Creek Dog.
these are exactly the kind of collage morons who default on their loans. they don't understand the very basic concept of gravity that most of us learn at what? age one? how can they understand such lofty things as accountability, responsibility, or basic math comprehension skills such as ;
i take out a loan for 250k and then get a degree in underwater fish farming that pays 250 bucks a week,... why am i broke?.
I agree 100%. I mean, what's next? People unable to spell (like using collage instead of college) and unable to use even the most basic of punctuation skills when descrying the stupidity of others? Well, good thing you set them straight with you post IA.Scooter, we all wish we could be just a little bit more like you.
Ya IA.ScooterTramp at least we don't go around and spank our superior Monkey.
Monkey, you poked fun at someone's elses bad spelling and lack of grammatical skills, but yours aren't much better. Go back and read your post and learn a little proper grammar and spelling yourself before you pass judgement on someone else. As for the young man who fell,I hope he realizes how lucky he is to have survived and exercises better judgement in the future.
As they say "Monkey"...you've been spanked!
You know the old saying..."sometimes it is better to remain silent"!
@Scooter... No doubt. Half the people in college don't belong there and it is a good part of why it is so expensive. Too many people taking courses like French Renaissance Poetry or Aboriginal Culture or some other worthless course that will have next to nothing of use in the real world.
Ring up a mountain of debt for useless classes then piss and moan about the debt and not being able to find a job in their field.
On a side note lets hope this guy pulls through it and studies his tail off in that poetry class.
Yeah. What Daz said. If you want to die jump out of a window where there are no trees or grass to soften the fall....or at least go up ten more floors next time...at the very least exercise better judgement either way.
Um...that's "judgment". Not "judgEment".
scooter lives in a trailer and drinks PBR's in the morning so leave him alone. He alone has the good life and will probably have a chili dog fer supper. Screw all of you collage types who can afford Charmin terlet papers.
he probably was told there was an alcohol enema prize for the best stupid thing a student could do.
When I read the headline on the site, but before I clicked on it, I immediately thought…that could have easily happened to me if I hadn't been careful when I was in college - at Washington State University. Imagine my surprise as the article opened…
Wazzu, to which its often referred, was known for being quite a 'party school' when I attended in the early '90s. I was under the impression that this rep had since waned, but obviously not. Even thought the story said that alcohol was not involved, I have a hard time believing it. There was a tremendous amount - and by that I mean more than I ever heard from friends and acquaintances' stories from other schools - of binge drinking that happened there. And I whole-heartedly took part.
I also lived, during my freshman year, on the 8th floor of the dorm. It's a wonder I'm sitting here typing a response to this very story in the first place...
I tried that underwater fish farming but it did not work out at all. First my tractor would not start. The mechanic said that the engine was flooded. So I planted them all by hand and watered them every day but nothing grew. The guy from the state farm bureau said they were “over watered”. I’m like “how the $&#* do you over water a fish”? =/
"He alone has the good life and will probably have a chili dog fer supper." Hey, I had chili dogs for supper last night, because it was my choice....and I was thinking, "life is isn't that bad." You're shattering my Hope and Change.
"collage morons"
Learn how to spell college and maybe you'd get an education too. The student was in the dorm room by himself, with the door locked. Alcohol did not play a factor, so it probably was a suicide attempt. Have a little decency. What if the student's family looked at some of these horrifying comments.
Hoping for a swift recovery.
Go Cougs!
ixlr8
actually after doing the yard work and getting the outside of my house ready for yet another winter, i fired up the grill and made steaks, admittedly i had a few Busch beers..... but how did you know about the Charmin? are you one of those voyeur type creeps running around window peeping at night?...if so Listen close for the"racking sound" if you hear it, ....don't forget duck and weave...
Monkey,
y bother? i b no-in 1 of ya's Vine Spellin &gammer PD ocifers will ba a'cummin ta do it fer me........
Perhaps its a case of "if my roommate dies I automatically get a pass" myth
The story is not very informative. It tells little more than the headline did. Great job MSNBC.
You couldn't even tell us whether it was a fight, dare, or prank, or if people saw it, or if others were in the room ?
Alcohol was not involved, how about drugs, or even the gender of the victim ?
My grade for you- D-
It was 10:00 PM "at night" !!! The student was a "male" junior student !
They did give the gender: Spokane Spokesman-Review that the male junior was flown by helicopter
The article iteself is basically just the article from spokesman .com The pullmanradio .com website gives a bit more info:
THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AROUND TEN O’CLOCK WHEN SOMEONE HEARD THE FALL AT ORTEN HALL........ WSU POLICE ARE TRYING TO DETERMINE WHAT CAUSED THE FALL. NO ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.
Still coulda probably been written better though.
MSNBC does this a lot but I came to the conclusion the other day that its probably because they try to only officially report on facts they can back up. Most of their stories (like other news sites/ tv broadcasts) come from a news wire or other publications. If they add in every bit of hearsay they get from other articles then it ends up being a giant game of telephone. That's why after a few days of a story being out there and after official statements being made by police/ drs./ ppl in the know, then they will add to the story. Otherwise they keep to the facts that they know and have confirmed (male student, 11th floor, no alcohol) and then supply us with a link (the words in blue) to other articles that have more information
Try these Bath Salts Freddy, they are really cool and can give you the ability to "fly high". OMG Dude, you took me literally!!
Great way to kick off the Fall semester!
We call it a great way to kick off a semester fall!
Maybe he is a physics major and was testing Newton's Theory of Relativity.
no doubt heard the congress repealed newtons laws of gravity..............
Wanted to see if he could break the sound barrier from 11 stories!
Alcohol wasn't involved... what was he doing, trying to impress a girl?
Glad he's alive.
Maybe he wanted an excuse not to take midterms? I couldn't show up for the midterm, professor. You see, I was in the hospital with every bone in my body broken.
Will all be falling a lot lot further soon as Congress pushes the entire USA off a fiscal cliff--about equivalent of jump from the top of the Grand Canyon. I don't think there will be many survivors.
what's a 22 year old doing in a dorm, anyway?
Living there, genius....
Jacobs, Dorm not Porn, get some new websites.
Amazing-Go Cougs!
Perhaps today's media should refrain from any stories being released until ALL information is known. (Said with deep sarcasm.)
We have people who seem are requesting more information when they read a story, but it is clear that they do not comprehend what they read. Furthermore, stories need time to develop so not all information is going to be given at the time it is reported. It is also important to know that during an investigation, most law enforcement agencies do not release all of the information for numerous reasons. Once a conclusion has been made and the case is closed then you will know all you need. Otherwise, I suggest people call the campus or police to gather more information. I bet they say they are not commenting during the investigation.
Julie
Completely, agree with you. Those people, never have anything to add, to the conversation. I just put them, on ignore. And, never read their posts. I do not care, what they post. They have a right, to their opinion. And, I have the right, to ignore them.
Someone find out what kinda of kool-aide is in the cafeteria.
he must have been wearing safety glasses before he fell. i hope this teachable moment isnt passed on by. safety glasses save lives. god speed idiot college dude.
He forgot the chute!
You would think if he was smart enough to go to college he would be smart enough not to fall thru a window.
He heard Romney gained a point in the polls and just jumped.
Its not the fall that kills people. It is the sudden stop at the end!
Must have bounced.
...like a bad check.
There is a more simple explination for this. Orton Hall has windows that swing out. I wonder if the student had the window open and was sitting on the window sill, leaned out to get a better look and fell.
What in the hell is wrong with these kids? The fourth such fall just this semester?!
How did he fall? Did I miss something?
Vertically.
LMAO!!!!
FOURTH FALL THIS SEMESTER??
Maybe they need to start teaching basics like not climbing out windows unless you're on the ground floor.
There should have been alcohol involved. Otherwise how do you explain it to your friends later?
