Lemonade stand vs. cancer: Boy raises $80,000 to aid research

LA HABRA, Calif. -- When Max Igoe was 5 years old, breast cancer claimed the life of his mother's best friend, 37-year-old Beth Rorman. The little boy found himself expressing his pain with the kind of idea only a kindergartner might conceive: a lemonade stand.

"It's just the first thing that popped into my head," said Max, now 14.

Nicki Igoe, Max's mother, said her son was aware her friend was sick.

"He knew that she had something called cancer," she recalled. Rorman battled the illness for some 10 years.

Max told his mom he would set up a lemonade stand near their La Habra home, and raise money for breast cancer research. Maybe even help them discover a cure.

"I explained to him that it wasn't the olden days. That people don't buy lemonade from peoples' driveways like they used to," Nicki said.

But she didn't want to hurt his feelings, either, not while he was mourning "Auntie Beth's" loss. So she helped him mix some juice, prop up a table and hand-print some signs.

This weekend, they will set up Max's stand for the ninth year in a row after years full of hundreds of gallons of pink sweet liquid, numerous raffles, "casino-night" fundraisers and days of labor.

Max has exceeded his wildest dreams: "We've raised over $80,000."

His goal? "A million dollars." And a cure.

Nicki said after every sale, they ask him if he wants to continue, and his answer for the last nine years has been the same: Yes.

My grandmother lost to breast cancer a couple weeks ago, and we all miss her. Thanks, Max.

As long as parents continue to raise their kids with a "can do" approach, they will conquer a lot of the world's ills and no matter how cynical we may become as we get older, we mustn't let that cynicism leech into a child's mind, or they will wake up in the morning on a school day and ask "why even bother".

Kids like this are our future. Encourage them, nurture them and help them in their projects. This kid has been raised in a way where he is conscious of others and has compassion. Lemonade stand for a good cause @ $80k in donations and counting? Awesome! One person (or two if you count Mom's assistance with getting this up and running) can incite change and make a difference. All those that have donated, good on you. Often times we have good intentions, but don't always follow through (life's complicated, right)? It's not as complicated for a younger person. It's pretty clear-cut and that's why this young man's lemonade stand is a success. No politics. Just a goal in mind to help rid the world of another ill.

Good job Max, I'll bet your parents are very proud you.

Wonderful deed by a wonderful boy, HOWEVER, I would recommend that he take that money and spread it DIRECTLY to those who need the money for treatment deductibles, non-insurance covered items, etc.

The whole Komeni industry is a rip-off. I held a huge event, wherein ALL proceeds were to go directly to this organization. I asked the local chapter to help sell tickets. They sold 10. I sold 500 by myself (not including tickets sold by others in the area).

Since this was a mega-event, I was promised that 10 of their members would attend to help take tickets throughout the evening. Only 2 people showed. The entire event, by the way, was paid for by my organization. Not one cent was spent by Komeni.

After the event, I got a call from them asking when they could expect the monies from the event.

Not to be deterred, I got over 20 people confirmed to join one of Komeni's "Walks". When I called to confirm a location, I was told to "Just send the money, because we already have a lot of people coming". Honestly...that's what they said. I will NEVER donate to this organization, NEVER promote it, and tell everyone I can about this hideous scam.

Give directly to those who need it - NEVER to Komeni!!!

Has everyone on this forum, including me, made a donation to Max's Lemonade Stand. If not, why not? Great going Max.

He should be fined 80K for violating all the laws. I hope some one gets sick from his lemonade and sues him for 20 million.

This is such a fine thing that the young man is doing! There is also an established national organization called Alex's Lemonade Stand, which raises money for childhood cancer research. It was begun by Alex Scott, a little girl who had cancer and wanted to do what she could to raise money for fighting the disease. She began with one lemonade stand, just as in this story. Alex sadly passed away several years after beginning her lemonade stand, but her name and her efforts live on in the organization. Bravo to both these excellent kids!

I wish people would wake up. The boy has the right motives, but the government don't. The researchers and the government are pocketing the money. If he raised 100 trillion they will be still asking for money.

Not to take anything away from this fine boy who sincerely raised serious $$$ for cancer, but the whole lemonade cancer business model has become a cottage industry. The Lemonade Stand Cancer Charity phenomena is the exclusive invention of Alex, a young girl with terminal cancer who died ( treated at Childrens Hospital Philly I think) whose dying wish in raising money for cancer research originated the renowned highly financially successful National and International Charity and business model called "Alex's Lemonade Stand." This reminds of the sincere effort of 2 charities in Haiti that actually compete as if they are in sales at manufacturing a device (which I can't recall right now) for poor people. I keep hearing the word knockoff.

Cancer will not be cured in my opinion. Too much of a profit loss on the doctor and pharmaceutical companies. You take away cancer, you take away the millions they make on pills, chemo, and doctor consultations. If a cure was found and made worldwide I'd go to another country to obtain such a cure. There are some countries that actually care about whether their people lived or died. America is only about making money so the common person is a liability and a write off if they don't have the funds. My father and grandmother had cancer and they beat it. My aunt had breast cancer and it claimed her life. So it seems more of a will to live and fight till your last breath thing than any other factor.
