Navy nuclear submarine, cruiser collide off East Coast; no injuries reported

The Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine USS Montpelier (SSN 765) returns to Naval Station Norfolk recently after a routine six-month deployment.

Updated at 9:24 a.m. ET: A U.S. Navy nuclear submarine and an Aegis cruiser collided during routine training off the U.S. East Coast on Saturday afternoon.

No one aboard either the USS Montpelier or the USS San Jacinto was injured, Pentagon officials told NBC News. Both vessels continued to operate under their own power.

The Montpelier is a nuclear-powered Los Angeles-class fast attack sub launched in 1991. The San Jacinto is an Aegis-class missile cruiser commissioned in 1988.

"We have had circumstances where Navy vessels have collided at sea in the past, but they're fairly rare as to how often they do take place," Lt. Cmdr. Brian Badura of the Fleet Forces Command told The Associated Press.

"If we do have an incident that does take place, there are folks that swing into action ... to help us make a better, more conclusive explanation of exactly what happened," Badura added.

The Navy said in a news release that "overall damage to both ships is being evaluated," and that the sub's propulsion plant was "unaffected by the collision."

Was anybody watching the sonar? radar?.

Screw the sonar and radar. Whatever happened to looking out the damned window occasionally? It's not like either of them was rowboat sized and easily overlooked, right?

I wasn't aware that submarines now have windows, based on your comment below! Shades of the old movie and weekly show Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. "Chips Ahoy"

With all the technology we have, billions of dollars worth of equipment, and we STILL run into each other? What the heck????

The Chinese don't need an aircraft carrier, they just need to let the Navy drive around enough and they'll destroy the ships themselves.

Speaking of McHale's Navy that reminds me of one PT Boat commander who lost his boat in a collision & it helped his career.

C'mon guys, this is a trailer from McHale's Navy part 2. Like to find out how many sailors have to change their soiled navy issued underwear after the incident. All kidding aside though, I am glad nobody's hurt !!!!!!Guess somebody will be scrubbing the deck for a LOOOOOONG time !!!

No one hurt, apparently no great damage done but now it will cost the careers of at least 2 officers and force same or more to quietly retire. In these great oceans they want more ships added to their budget.....LOL ..

makes sense why Mitt is proposing to buy three more nuclear subs now, need to replace the ones the Navy is self-destructing. What I don't understand is why he wants to give Lima-Ohio the upgrade to the M-1 tanks, they just don't seem all that useful in Afghanistan. May he sees the need for them in the Iranian desert??

To everyone who's saying that the CO's careers are over, you may very well be wrong. I can cite instances of US naval collisions where the CO wasn't relieved of command. I know of at least one that went on to flag rank. What's pretty much guaranteed is that the COs will be sweating it out until the investigations are done.

Regarding nukes - Navy aircraft haven't had the mission of carrying nukes for several years. I'm pretty sure (not positive) that the only Navy ships (boats...) that carry nukes are the ballistic missile subs. Putting the blame on Obama is misplaced.

I don't know what type of exercises were going on, but I CAN say that an attack submarine's mission (among others) is to get within firing range of their torpedoes (or missiles). That could have been what was going on here.

I can say with certainty that most - not all - of the comments here are at best, ignorant of the way things work in the Navy, and at worst just plain idiotic.

Note: I wasn't a submariner. I was trained to sink them from the air. ; ) Hoovers forever!

I am wondering how the Aegis cruiser is going to track Russian submarines if it can't track our own.

                      Shrug.

And how are our subs going to track Russian surface ships if they can't track friendly ships.

If this keeps up our enemies might think they can sneak around our coasts with their navies.

I think they should reduce their speed if they can't track each other. Maybe a "No wake" buoy should be installed at the Norfolk Navy base.

I hate to tell you this, but it was some of your friends who did the deed. The way I heard it - they were tired of listening to you dump on Obama every fricking time somebody said anything. It was funny - the first 2 - 300 times - but it wearsout overtime. They were going to have an intervention -but then Frankie, "Hey, screw that- let's just piss in his corn flakes...so, that's how that happened.

If it matters, I tried to stop them, but I got to laughing so hard, no one took me seriously. Don't worry though - nobody has any STD's, although - Geno was there too - and you know what a whore monger he is...

Sounds like the Navy is letting illegal aliens with no drivers license drive the ships and subs. Wonder if they got out and ran after they collided. Hope they have insurance.

None of you have a fukking clue, if they were "exercising" against each other they had active sensors shut down and were totally passive, especially the Sub. And what`s the best place to try and defeat detection? Under the surface ship, as close to the keel as you dare.

You`ve all watched "Red October" once too often...

passive sonar is essentially listening for the sound made by vessels

                                  From wiki

So you are saying the boats ran into each other while coasting with their engines stopped, essentially.

Probably under a 5-7 knot bump.

But a bump nonetheless that had to be reported.

BrianPatronie...I follow your logic, but only to a point where ships collide and the Navy feels it has to report it in the news. That my friend ain't the way it is suppose to happen. And when a 10,000 ton ship collides (even slowly) with a submarine (a rated pressure hull) any damage is going to require a good long look before it goes out on patrol. Yes, no one was injured and that's great. Yes, no significant damage was done, and that is also great. No, ships are not suppose to "bump", "touch", or "rub" up against any other ship.

One ship of the same class, the USS Vincennes, became infamous in 1988 when she shot down Iran Air Flight 655, resulting in 290 civilian fatalities. The captain of the Vincennes, had believed the airliner was an jet fighter on an attack vector, based on reports of (misinterpreted) radar returns.Indeed this class of ships has an outstanding record.

A new war against Iran and maybe new war crimes ?
