University of Florida student Christian Aguilar, 18.
CEDAR KEY, Fla. – The parents of missing University of Florida student Christian Aguilar believe that the body found in Levy County is their son, his father said Saturday.
“I just want to make sure that everybody knows that our prayers have been heard. We, as a family believe that Christian has been found, but we will wait until the authorities confirm it, Carlos Aguilar said during a news conference in Gainesville.
“At this moment the only think we want to say as a family, is to thank every single person that supports our family during this horrible time," he added.
Aguilar's parents also they had not seen the remains, so the identification of the body was not confirmed yet, but they said they were glad they had a sense of closure.
The body was found around 2:30 p.m. Friday by hunters at the Gulf Hammock Hunting Club, east of Cedar Key, according to the Gainesville Sun. Gainesville police said they responded to the area off State Road 24 on Parker Boulevard, at the request of the Levy County Sheriff’s Office. The area is about 60 miles southwest of Gainesville.
Christian Aguilar was last seen in Gainesville with a friend, Pedro Bravo, also 18, who has been charged with first-degree murder. Police say Bravo told them he beat Aguilar unconscious and left him in a parking lot.
The body was found around 2:30 p.m. Friday by hunters at the Gulf Hammock Hunting Club, police said.
"Two young fellas were looking for firewood by themselves," Fred Oliver, a volunteer with the sheriff’s office, told the Gainesville Sun. "They picked up the scent, the odor of something dead."

Officers drive on Parker Boulevard off State Road 24 near Cedar Key, Fla., on Friday, after a body that may be missing University of Florida student Christian Aguilar was found.
Oliver told the Sun that the young men thought they had stumbled onto the remains of a dead deer, and maybe they could get a set of antlers. What they found was a decomposed, partially buried body.
"It was obviously human," Oliver said, adding that it was near the dirt road.
Authorities said they found blue Vans shoes, duct tape and blue jeans with the decomposed remains.
The clothes matched the description of what Aguilar was wearing when he was last seen Sept. 20 with Bravo at a Gainesville Best Buy.

The remains need to be identified through forensic methods, but Oliver told the Sun, "They're almost sure they know who it is."
Police initially charged Bravo with depriving a crime victim of medical care, but he was charged with murder after police said they found blood in Bravo's SUV and found Aguilar's backpack hidden inside a suitcase in Bravo's closet.

This is why I carry a gun everywhere I go. Sad. Very sad to feel like you need to live this way.
Maybe you feel that you need to live this way, but the vast majority of us aren't so paranoid. The two students were supposedly friends. Most normal people don't feel like they need to carry a gun when out with friends.
I'm not paranoid. There are house invasions here. My friend's 70 year old mother was attacked at Walmart a few weeks ago. Store was robbed at gun point around the corner.
I live in a very nice neighborhood. It's not paranoid, it's prepared. Times seem to be changing.
It is harder to get a driver license in Florida than buy a gun. That is why there are so many unqualified people with and carrying guns. Anyone who think they can defend themselves just by buying a gun and carrying it without any training is a danger to themselves and others. And that reasoning causes more people to buy guns to defend themselves against the first person who bought the gun.
Walking around with these people among you is scarier than hanging out in the parking lot where 80 year olds are having a drivers convention.
@On it, I agree. Military training, or local police classes are required for a CCW in Florida.

Maybe you need to reevaluate what you call a "very nice" neighborhood.
Mixed. Nice neighbors who watch out for you.
Privacy fenced. $200 K homes.
Police classes are not required for a concealed carry permit in Florida. Anybody qualified to give a conceal carry class can give a 2 hour class and have you shoot in a bucket with a low caliber gun at your home will qualify you for conceal carry in Florida. This certainly isn't adequate training and not even required to buy a gun and have it assessable.
Ok. That was was not what I attended.
But it may vary from county to county. Let's not fight here.
Stay safe and peace to you and all you hold dear. Fair?
You paranoid idiot! How do you enjoy life if you have to carry a gun everywhere? It's the NRA mentality that's a disease and it's infecting the weak and vulnerable.
This young boy must have been robbed of his cash since they were in a Best Buy. Some friend? Huh! I hope the little b a s t a r d rots in his prison cell for the rest of his life thinking about his petty little grudge that led to the killing. Hopefully the other inmates will see this little SOB for the back stabber he is and use him as their sex toy.
I do understand how you feel. But.. the violent crime rate has actually been declining since the early 90s, in both states with strict gun laws, and those without.
So either you live in a bad neighborhood, or your perceptions are a bit wide of the mark.
So? You do what you can.
I don't know where all the criticism is coming from, what towns or states. Spend a weekend in Boca and go for a late night dinner. Look behind you.
As we can see that little devil Bravo was not a friend. He preyed on somebody that trusted him. He is a very wicked boy. He should be behind bars for life.
It sounds as if this kid was attacked with out provocation. I know I shouldn't say this and I'm sorry for bringing it up but I get the feeling it was something done to cover up being embarrassed by something they did together? We may never know why he was killed.
My prayers go to his family and friends, may God keep him close.
Talk about jumping to conclusions! You know absolutely nothing about this crime other than what has been reported, yet you decide to make unfounded assumptions. Get a life!
I have to admit the though came to my mind that sex may have been involved to have caused a violet reaction in a so-called 'friend'. For some men, a proposition alone has caused them to severely injure or kill the man making the proposition (unfortunately, unlike women that constantly spurn unwanted sexual advances, all they need to do is say "no, I'm not interested' instead of resorting to violence). With the victim's age, I'm wondering if they've only been friends since college started and they'd be freshmen so they wouldn't have known each other very long which would mean there wouldn't necessarily be a sexual motive but that the victim didn't really know the person he considered as a friend.
Waaaay2young. R.I.P.
Getting beat to death is terrible by itself, but for an eighteen year old, just makes it that much worse.
I agree completely. It just seems unbelievable that such a young person can be snatched away when he had his whole life in front of him. In law enforcement, we often have talked about what it is that makes one person a murderer, and someone else not. With all the motives taken into account, from impulsive, emotional, premeditated or mental illness. It is clear that practically everyone, in the right circumstances is capable of harming another. But with enough support, wise choices and even luck, the vast majority will live without taking another's life. How tragic one promising life has been cut short, his family is left to mourn, and another young life is forever destroyed because he could not control his emotions.People laugh when we tell them to count to ten before they respond during an argument when they are really upset. But the highest rate of victims of assault, battery or murder occur during emotional confrontations.
Why is it when someone says they know they shouldn't say something- they say it anyway?
"Pedro Bravo, 18, is in the Alachua County jail and recently was indicted on first-degree murder and kidnapping charges after police said he admitted beating Aguilar in a dispute over a girl and leaving him somewhere." -- The Gainesville Sun
Ah, the girlfriend conflict raises its ugly head. When will men learn that a "girlfriend" is not worth hurting or killing another person. Some men act like the woman is his property even when they haven't "put a ring on it" (and even then, she is not his property and has free will to decide who she wants to be with: if she's not interested she wouldn't be taking up with someone else). What's really ironic in this situation is that not only did Pedro deprive Christian the opportunity to possibly have a relationship with this girl, he also deprived himself of the same since he'll be going to prison for a long time (where he'll probably be the new 'girlfriend' of some of the other inmates). The girl at the center of this dispute is still free to move on to another guy.
This was no friend.
Hey, NBC News staff! How about a little proofreading, or do you even know what that is?
yeah heres another zinger for you to correct
"Aguilar's parents also they had not seen the remains, so the identification of the body was not confirmed yet,"
That's a quote, you do know what that means? The parents used the word, not the NBC. I hope that's the case.
The level of quality education in this country, I'm surprised the "journalist" was able to do this well. I don't think they teach proofreading in journalism schools any more, especially with the advent of the Internet where MSNBC and all the other news sites are in a hurry to post an article in order to be the first with the news. When a journalist rushes, spelling and grammar are bound to suffer. Even the best electronic spelling and grammar checking software can leave a piece with glaring errors.
This is why Florida has the "Stand Your Ground" law and concealed weapon permits, which makes it possible to get the mutants before they get you, really . . .
Really! :-)
Yeah I know I always suspect my friends are going to beat me to death.
"This is why Florida has the "Stand Your Ground" law and concealed weapon permits, which makes it possible to get the mutants before they get you, really ."
Yeah, and if they're also carrying the same legally-sanctioned firearm it means they could still get you first and then you'd still be dead, even with a lawful gun in your pocket.
some folks have a hard time making friends, they could be introverted, naive, just plan shy/awkward, there are a lot of predators out there who look for those types of folks to victimize.
After a loved one dies there is never closure. That's a lie, you take your grief to the grave with you.
I'll tell you what, if this were my loved one, this creep could expect a contract on his life even if he's behind bars!
"I'll tell you what, if this were my loved one, this creep could expect a contract on his life even if he's behind bars!"
Which makes you no better than the person that committed this crime, making yourself the judge, jury and executioner. We have laws to live by in a civil society. You may not like how the law handles a case but that's still the way it works. If you don't like it, get out and vote, get involved with politics in your city, county, or state, do something constructive.
This is every parent's nightmare. I pray that Christian's family finds peace and comfort.
The duct tape makes it premeditated murder. Hope he fries.
Like the old saying goes: "With friends like this, who needs enemies!"
Tough judgmental crowd here. Seems to get tougher everyday.
Let's all try some community work and fix this mess.
Sad sad sad.. This guy seemed to have so much going for him, way too young to die. May he RIP, and may God help his family find comfort.
