Search for University of New Hampshire student's body temporarily called off

From left, Meghan Hoyt of Westboro, Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott's best friend, and Sue Gendron, also of Westboro, attend a candlelight vigil on Saturday night at the Bay State Commons for Marriott. A man has been charged with second-degree murder in Marriott's death though her body is yet to be found.

The search for the body of a 19-year-old University of New Hampshire student was suspended Sunday ahead of the arraignment for a martial arts instructor who's been charged in her death, a prosecutor said.

A ground and water search on and around Peirce Island in Portsmouth, N.H., was put on hold Sunday, Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young said, according to The Associated Press. She said officials will discuss the next "viable step" in the search on Monday, the same day 29-year-old Seth Mazzaglia of Dover is arraigned in connection with the death of Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott.

Mazzaglia was charged Saturday with second-degree murder, but Marriott's body has not been located. Marriott was from Westborough, Mass., and had been living with an aunt in Chester, N.H., and commuting to the university in Durham.

Assistant District Attorney James C. Vara would not comment on how cooperative Mazzaglia had been after his arrest or how investigators were led to the Peirce Island. The island which is about 100 feet off the coast of Portsmouth and is connected by road to the mainland, the Boston Globe reported.

Mazzaglia and Marriott met last summer when both were working at a Target store in Greenland, N.H., Marriott's aunt, Rebecca Tyning, told the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. Young confirmed they knew each other, but she declined to say whether they worked together.

"There was familiarity between them," Young said.

Marriott, a marine biology major, was last heard from on Tuesday.

She attended class that night and made plans to visit friends in Dover. Her cellphone was used that night, according to fliers family members posted around town. Her car was later found in a campus parking lot in Durham.

Seth Mazzaglia is charged in the death of Elizabeth

Friends and family have described Marriott as a fun-loving, trusting young woman with a wide circle of friends who was active in chorus and a prom queen in high school. She loved animals, volunteered at the New England Aquarium and was helping put herself through school by working at Target, friends said.

“This evil act will not define Lizzi,” the Rev. John Taylor, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Westborough, told his congregation on Sunday, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reported.

“We will remember her smiling and laughing.”

At a vigil in Westborough on Saturday night, her father choked back tears while speaking to the hundreds who had gathered, calling his daughter an angel and saying she's now in heaven.

Mazzaglia graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2006 with a degree in theater. Friends have said they were shocked to hear of his arrest.

A person named Seth Mazzaglia was listed in a short newspaper article as one of 18 graduates last December from the Portsmouth Police Department's Citizens Police Academy, a program that aims to bring citizens closer to police and raise public awareness about crime prevention techniques. The academy's director, Sgt. Tom Grella, could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Mazzaglia was being held at the Strafford County House of Correction in Dover on Sunday. It was unclear whether he had an attorney, but Young said she expected him to have one appointed in time for Monday's hearing.

Another tragic story, condolences to friends and family. I hope Elizabeth's body is found so that her family can give her a proper burial. This killer Seth Mazzaglia should be prosecuted to the full extent the law.

they haven't what lead them to him but they have enough to charge him. Unfortunately if he dumped her body in the Pisquata River the likely hood of finding her is very slim. Extremely strong currents. Our community is just heartbroken by this! I attended the UNH Hockey game last night and they had a touching moment of silence. You could have heard a pin drop. I really hope they throw the book at this guy!

For one thing it says Rex-kwondo was charged with "second" degree murder. Not planned in advance, so this man could have accidentally struck her with his car, got scared and hid the body for all you know

So did he confess or is the case circumstantial? Better yet, how can they convict him if there's no body thus no proof? That's unfair imo, what if he is innocent???

Any legal experts here that can tell me if they are even allowed to charge someone with a crime if there is no proof of either a crime or the crime?

First, the DA is NOT going to release any evidence that can taint a jury... so don't expect too much.

Second, they just need to connect him to her disappearance. Blood on his clothes, unusual scratch marks, personal affects in his possession... Not an easy conviction, but possible depending on what the DA has against him.

Third, just as many innocent get convicted as guilty walk. Just because he has been arrested, means they believe they can prosecute him for it, regardless if he actually did it or not.

But condolences do go for the family, friends and community she was a part of....

I am not sure how strong the evidence is but there will be a grand jury to hear it and if it is strong enough to prosecute then he will face trial and if not he will walk. The story is speculative at best. I hope the girl is alive and if not RIP

Larry, that's some crap then. You should only be allowed to arrest someone based on concrete proof. Good luck on us getting that bill passed though, with the private for-profit prison lobby and all that...

Newswinner, concrete proof is necessary because the prosecutor cannot make claims of guilt without having a sworn to complaint with facts to back the complaint up. Prosecutors can and do maliciously prosecute citizens, yet most citizens do not know the laws (Civil and Criminal) well enough to make a
dispute about what the Prosecutor and Judge[s] do and decide to do. The courts are as corrupt as the law departments and law enforcement across this Country. We the People do not want or know how to stand together. Benjamin Franklin “hang together or hang separately”.

Not one item in that article indicating why the search was suspended or why the suspect has been charged. I hope they find her alive & unharmed having run away for some silly reason. Useless article with no substance other than that a wonderful sounding young woman is missing.

Maybe something the suspect said made officials stop the search for now. They might have found out other valuable information they cannot release at this time because of their ongoing investigation. You can never tell - we will have to wait for more information.

Paul, I was looking for that too. There's very little information in the article regarding how she dies, they haven't found her body yet but are assuming she's dead so maybe he fessed up to it? My sincere condolences to her family and friends, she seemed like a really sweet and good person.

I also agree, Paul, that the article has almost no usable facts listed. They don't have a body, yet they somehow know/believe she is dead. Mazzaglia has been charged with 2nd degree murder, yet it is completely unknown how the police linked him to her supposed murder. I mean, where is the freak'en link between Mazzaglia and the girl that makes them suspect foul play? At this point, we don't know if she is alive or dead. We don't know of Mazzaglia committed any crime. We don't know anything!

My guess is that they will ask him where her body is and reduce his sentence to life in prison instead of death in return. If they do that then there is no need to spend the resources searching for her.

            #3.4 - Sun Oct 14, 2012 8:22 PM EDT

New Hampshire does not have the death penalty (only for killing a police officer) and given that he's only been charged with 2nd degree murder he can't get life. They called off the search because the waters around Pierce Island are very dangerous. They have information that leads them to believe she is in fact deceased. If there was even an inkling that she was still alive they wouldn't stop searching. The police/DA are keeping things very close to the vest for reasons, what the reasons are we don't know. My heart goes out to her family and friends! I can't even imagine what they are going through.

Maybe the cops aren't giving away all of the details of the case so that they can have a case against the suspect. Maybe that is why they are being tight lipped about it instead of telling the public everything and ruin the chances of conviction.

Helpful for what? To satisfy a morbid curiosity? The police and her father have reason to believe she's dead so it's not like we need to keep an eye out for her. And unless you're part of the search teams up there, more information on how or where she was killed is not needed.

Never fear, the gory details will come out eventually and make you all happy.

And you are a clueless troll who has no point. Teenager?? I'm 39, married, 13 years in the military and I guarantee. I've seen more corpses than you could possible imagine, unfortunately some from my own hand. So next time you want to be a smartass, perhaps you should maybe check a person's posting history. By doing so it would have been obvious I'm not some gothy teenager with an undead fetish. My distaste for people wanting more info about a dead person comes from personally seeing what a 7.62 round fired from my gun does to people. It's not something I'd wish even wannabe smartass trolls to see.

I'd just like to comment on the technicalities of the story, as in does anyone ever proofread these articles? Do you actually employ editors or anyone whose job it is to look over these articles, make sure things are spelled correctly, get rid of the typos and grammatical errors? If so, was that person off today? I can understand - in a way - that many news articles are written on a fifth-grade level in order that the news be available to the largest denominator. What I don't understand are reporters that write like fifth graders, and editors who apparently don't do their jobs. Sloppy.

According to the local newspaper, she was brutally murdered. The search was suspended for some unknown reason. So, someone heard or he confessed to the killing. Otherwise, he would not be held and charged. They do not want to tip their had as to the other details. A sad day for her family, co-workers and friends.

Unfortunately, for her, and her family, the saga continues, when you don't, get to know someone well enough to know, whether or not, to trust them. Across the country and the world, predators like this are waiting, to say whatever their new interest, wants to hear. But, parents must instill in their kids, the importance of gut instinct, sharing details, with loved ones, before ever trusting them. In some extreme cases, parents must get the name of the new beau, do a background check, on them. Most importantly, protect your loved ones from over three million predators that roam the country. The sad truth is, our loved ones aren't safe unless we all intervene.

I am SO sick of being preyed upon by men...All my life and many many women can relate, I have had to constantly look over my shoulder...the amount of energy/thought that goes into being safe is amazing...Most men have no idea what it is like to be a woman...All predators should be killed, period...I wish there was a way to test men at birth and IF they had this killing/predator gene, they could be killed...yup, I said it...women disappearing is at EPIDEMIC porportions...AND think about all the women that are raped and abused by the hands of men....I volunteer at a shelter, my eyes are opened. Be kind people...MEN: IF you have these thoughts, get help....please.

My God lady, you are pushing the very limits of man-hating; and maybe you've already crossed over. The fact is, the vast majority of men are NOT sadistic women abusers. Yes, some do. But some women abuse men. Since none of us have ESP, we have to do our best (men and women) to ensure that we don't get abused by the opposite sex. But no matter how hard we try, we will never be perfect. Hence, in some cases, we're going to get burned by that other person. All we can do is the best we can do. Oh, and by the way, there is no predator gene. There are just men and women trying to deal with life in the best way they can or have been taught to. Sadly, many people fail to adapt and slide into a lifestyle of criminal misconduct or some other form of abuse. I am sorry to say that this is what it means to be human.

You sound like you need to seek some mental health assistance, it's hard to deal with the harsh realities that many victims have faced in their lives without cracking. I applaud you for helping, however It sounds like you've been stretched too thin. The cold hard fact of the world is that men face a far greater prevalence of brutality and trauma in their lives than women, you have no idea what it is like to live as a man either, we have to constantly watch out as well, not just for men but for women too and when something happens to males we're pretty much on our own. You're over-generalization is false and offensive. Then there is your statement about killing male babies, wow. You need to be watched, like a hawk...

though maybe im a bit naive here as to what i said that pissed you all off. I worked in the Hotel/Casino industry in Las Vegas as a security officer/Administrative sergeant. because Vegas is a family destination vacation spot and an adult geared gambling mecca, we trained in potential missing child/kidnap training scenarios, including the physcology and suspect type(s) their actions and habits. I also am a fierce opponent of demonists, satanists, cultists... I mean FIERCE, as in I wont wait for and explanation if i see one chewing on my cat, there will be a beating. my intention was good here, any added information relative to the potentialities and "what to look fors"....in this my hopes would be for the prevention of a possible next time occurrence. I have my way of doing things, and when i offend anyone about a subject, especially the front and center group critisizing me in this manner, when none of you really know me and could never have a fair personality profile based on 9 sentences in a column blog. it tells me that you are all probably satanists, cultists, vampires or just haters... you might even be child killers, hey you never know right...JUDGE NOT LEST YE BE JUDGED......

except for a picture of a guy with a head wider than most peoples chest...there is nothing here. We dont know why they picked him to arrest, we don't know anything. With a place like that, that is half water, she could never be found, and if this gorrilla is guilty, it means plea barganing and years of trial b.s. I hope they do find her and at least have some closure on that part of this tragic deal.

?Wait! This is a rush to judgment that ought to be suspended. Is the women really dead? How do authorities know who "killed" her. I think that it is irresponsible for the press to report a story of this sort when they apparently have no facts about what happened. I am very sorry for the woman's family, but think that we should all withold judgment until we know what really happened.

As a father of 4 girls it is my bigeest fear that it would happen to one of my daughters. there is no cure or rehabilitaion for guys like this. It is time to bring back the death penilty. He confessed to killing her according to the news stations here in Ma. That is all we need to know.

My deepest sympathies to the family they now have an angle in heaven.

If in fact this young man is found to be guilty of murder without a doubt, it is my hope that he's charged officially in court of murder, then immediately following, he's executed. No free room & board like so many other criminals who end up with more rights than the victims. Yes, our justice system needs a major overhaul.

Sometimes when I read articles like this one I can't even believe the writer gets paid for writing!

Where in this article does this author state how the police and family know this girl is dead! Why are they looking for a body?! Why is this man a suspect? Just because someone said this man knows the missing girl? I mean that's all the article says about him being suspected. Is it that the girl's friend told the police this guy knew the girl. Did he confess????? Did someone leave an anonymous message saying that she is dead? What the......?

I said it once and I'll say it again, it's someone's daughter who is being raped, murdered or brutalized..but it's someone's son who is doing the raping, the murdering, and brutalizing of someone's daughter.

Yes, it's obvious you hate men. I'm sure this isn't the last time you'll say it, either.

But women sometimes brutalize women, too. Or don't they teach you that in dyke school?

Not going to be much of a trial if they dont find a body. Without a body, they cant prove murder. Of course there is not much information released yet but the reasoning is sound.
