Caught on camera: Little league coach hits referee

A little league football assistant coach could be facing assault charges after he was caught on video punching a referee during a game in West Park over the weekend, police said Monday.

The incident happened Saturday evening during a game between the West Park Saints and Miramar Patriots at Mc Tyre Park at 3501 Southwest 56th Avenue, according to a Broward Sheriff's Office report.

According to the report, referee Andrew Keigans gave the Saints a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after one of the assistant coaches made a derogatory comment from the sidelines.

After he threw the flag, Keigans turned around and bumped one of the players and moved the player to the side to talk to one of the other referees, the report said.

See original story, video on NBCMiami.com

The assistant coach, who disagreed with the penalty, barged the field and confronted Keigans as he was held back by head coach Antonio Lane, the report said.

Because the assistant coach left the sidelines and entered the field of play to confront Keigans, the head referee decided to end the game, the report said.

At that point, the entire coaching staff and parents of the young players ran onto the field to confront Keigans. As Keigans started walking off the field, the Saints' assistant coach ran towards him and slapped him on the face with his left hand.

The slap sent Keigans to the ground and knocked his hat off. The entire incident was captured on a video posted to YouTube.

The assistant coach was later identified as 43-year-old Dion Robinson. He hasn't been arrested yet but could face an assault charge, the BSO said.

Any "coach", who hits a referee in kids' sports, should have his team penalized with an automatic forfeit. That would cut down on crap like this. That guy should also be charged.

Throw his @$$ in jail and then he'll see what assaulting someone is like.

Hopefully they give him 6 months to a year, a huge fine and tons of community service.

And you wonder where kids these days get some of their behavior issues...morons like this coach...they think they can resort to violence.

The league should ban him from coaching. Any coach that hits a referee should be automatically banned for life from coaching that sport. Also, I hope he gets charged for this. Though I bet he already has a rap sheet, so this is just another notch on his criminal belt.

Umping is volunteering and I worked baseball games. Sometimes the abuse coming from the peanut gallery made me almost want to wade in with a Louisville Slugger and shut 'em up. But I kept my cool and endured things for a few seasons because its for the kids and without ump's/ref's there would be no games. I felt sorry for younger folk who would officiate. In this clowns case a ban from coaching or even attending games, plus fine, community work and possibly some detention time. I expect a civil suit will follow.

Sad thing is the kids can't control who their coach is.. punishing them for him being a thug won't teach them anything other then the system is unfair. He needs to go to jail, and never be put in a position of responsibility/leadership with youth ever again. The youth sports league that governs these games also needs to do a better job of screening these individuals who are supposed to be teaching the kids.

It's ironic that they always talk about these youth sports programs as preventing drug use and violence with kids, but when you have guys like this in the program it looks like it's doing more harm than good.

Kevin, you don't punish the children, for a grown man's terrible behavior. That is just another example of injustice. By making the innocent "children" on one team pay for the guilty "Adult's" violent criminal behavior one more time. You remove the adult and make him pay for his own consequences. Aren't there enough cases where the innocent suffer for an adult's crimes? Punish the one who committed the wrong only.

The referee was wrong to end the game the way he did, but that does not excuse the actions of the coach. The coach deserves to be charged with assault and do some jail time for his actions. The coach should also be barred from participation in any youth sports programs in the future. The referee should have simply assessed a penalty for the coach coming out onto the field and ejected the coach from the game. The coach should have been required to leave the area immediately and before the game would be restarted. This would not only have served to get the coach out of there but also helped by getting the parents behind the referee in getting the coach to leave so the kids could play. Stopping the game entirely and penalizing the kids for the actions of this a-hole coach was the wrong thing for the referee to do in this situation.

This kind of crap is getting far too common. I remember when my kids were going through youth soccer and baseball...some parents actually believed little "Johnny" was the best out there and would grow up to play professional sports. Unreal...

Give the coach a "time-out" in the local jail for a couple of days...may just get sued by the referee as well...what a piece of work!

I've seen bad behavior in all races. We are slowly losing our morals by acting like animals in front of our children. I hear grown ups cussing in front of children at the grocery stores, etc. Kids learn by what they hear and see.

For example, look at the actions of the mayor of Chicago. The killings in Chicago are still happening but he is too worried about keeping a business (Chick-fil-A) out of Chicago for the simply reason that the owner privately chooses to follow scripture from the Bible.

We are going backwards in this country.

Dem, you're absolutely incorrect. I'm white and I was at a one of my son's baseball games where one of the other teams coaches started yelling obscenities at our players. The offending coach was (and guessing still is) white. One of my co-workers was officiating a soccer game and got punched by a parent, right in the back of his head. Again, white. Not a white and black thing so give it a rest.

Hmmm... I do not think this has anything to do with a race issue. This type of event happens at all sorts of sporting events - involving persons of various races and ethnicity.

Someone feels offended, then enraged, as their anger grows. Impaired reasoning sets in, and BAM, there is some sort of fight or inappropriate behavior.

The perpetrator in this event should be booked and charged with assault; and, because it happened at a youth sporting event, the charges should be the maximum. Upon conviction, there should be a maximum penalty, and that should involve jail time and a fine of mucho dineros $$$$.

That would put some teeth to the axiom: "Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time."

Like Forrest Gump said back in 1993, "Stupid is as stupid does."

Just another reason why ALL COACHES need to go through some sort NAYS certification so that they can be taught that this type of action IS NEVER TOLERATED.. Same thing for any and all parents through the PAYS program. This way, in the end of the certifcation class they sign a piece of paper and they are then held fully responsible for their actions.. Too many times I have seen games forfeited or stopped and called off from this sort of thing.... Wrong move officials!! Let the kids play the game. They weren't the person or persons that hit the official. The old saying comes back into play once gagain, kids sports were meant for the kids, the adults just mess it all up!!. My apologies to all the adults that do preach and practice good sportsmanship and teaching the basics of what ever sport their sons and daughters are involved in, for that last statement.. I have been a youth sports coach now for well over 35 years and have seen the gamut of issues. Coaches that pull this stunt should be taken from the field by any security available or by the other coaches on the team, the league should have him stand before them, at some point and apologize to EVERYONE within the league structure especially to the team he was coaching on, then the league ban him for life from ever coaching again. The information collected on the incident should be turned in to the authorities so it is placed on his record after his arrest is made. The official involved will have plenty of witnesses available along with the video footage so when he presses charges, and HE SHOULD PRESS CHARGES, no ifs ands or buts. Then let the system do its business. The coaching staffs of all the teams in the league should be required to see this video so they can see for themselves WHAT NEVER TO DO to NEVER TOLERATE!!... To any and all coaches of youth sports... YOU ARE VOLUNTEERS!!! You should have enough knowledge of the game to do your job teaching to kids the basics. You also have a responsibility to yourself, your team and assistant coches to make sure that NO ONE, will ever step out of line. This is not life or death on the sports field or gym or court... It is all about the kids , teaching them solid basic skills and sportsmanship. It is not about any of us coaches, thinking we have the brilliance of any of the higher class fully paid coaches. (I include myself here. I surely didn't get paid to coach the kids. I jumped into it with no preconceptions that I was going to become the benchmark type). It is supposed to be fun, competitive and teaching kids to be good in sports and to have great sportsmanship as well. The simple summary here is, this coach was wrong... DEAD WRONG, in his actions and if the league has any worth it will step up, ban this person from ever coaching any type of sport, ever again.. Don't look at the official as having done your team wrong wiht a call.. Look around you and think of what the possibilities are if you take matters into your own hands and attemtp to take issue with any official coach, parent, or God forbid, any kids. It will have a very adverse effect on the sporting community as a whole.

Enough said on my part... Just stating my opinion and thoughts on this matter. It's always open to scrutiny. Good luck to all coaches around this great country and be sure to make it fun, not another job!!!

I don't know why so many people are upset at the racist comments. If someone is racist your not going to change their views. Racism is something that is usually taught in the home and people are bred to be racist not born that way. Remember most people who are racist don't feel good about themselves so they must try to find a reason to judge and put down others to feel better about their own shortcomings. Any person with even minimal education knows bad people as well as good, come in all colors, genders and sizes. When you encounter a racist don't get upset, you should really pity them, for they are usually just as bad as the person they are trying to put down. To harshly judge a whole race of people based upon the actions of some shows their lack of evolution.

A mob of Liberals surrounding the referee and then one of the "brave assistant coaches" sucker punches him over a football game. As his pants fall down, no less.

Yes, we see where the intolerant Liberal tolerance always leads.

Where is the other "Reverend" Jesse Jackson?

You knew it was only a matter of time before this turned
        into some racist rant...

Regardless, what happened to coaches being role models? I
grew up playing football from ages 8-19, all of my pop warner coaches were
black. They were all strong, intelligent, positive role models who taught all
of their players more about life than football. These idiots in the video
should never be in a position of authority teaching our children anything. As
for all the racist a*sholes on here, judging an entire race by the actions of a
few individuals is the definition of ignorance. Step into the 21st
century, the country is getting more diverse whether you like it or not, you
        will be the minority soon.

        @Kevin C-752389

Any "coach", who hits a referee in kids' sports, should have his team penalized with an automatic forfeit. That would cut down on crap like this. That guy should also be charged.

That's exactly what happened and the reaction from the red team's kids struck (pardon the punn) me even more than the punch.

What did those kids learn out there? The red team got excited that they won because of a forefit. They weren't bummed out because they lost the opportunity to play that game? They've been taught, it's all about the win.

The green team's kids (and apparently the parents as well) learned that when you don't like what's going on, you resort to violence.

The coach who threw the punch should have been immediately ejected and barred from participating for the rest of the season and without anger management classes. The green team should not have been penalized by a forefit. That teaches the kids that you have to take personal responsibility for yourself, because that coach certainly isn't going to.

        No one won other there.

A lot of race talk here. The Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C. predicts whites will become a minority by 2050 at 47% of the population. By 2097 Pew predicts: 50% Hispanic, 22% African American, 14% Asian, 4% white, 2% Native American, and other minorities making up the remaining 8%. I wonder if you put these comments in a time capsule and opened them in 2097 what people would think of them then ?

You mean that draft dodging vice-president Joe "Bite Me" Biden buffoon? You know, the one that had 5 deferments for Vietnam for his mythical ailment, asthma. Teams in the ghetto don't have quality teams play them because of stuff like that right there. Acting like animals in front of children. Teams of well behaved youths forfeit rather than go and face dirty playing and crimal parents that can't act like human beings. If that ref, who would have knocked the sucker punching little guy out, would have fought back to defend himself there would have been 100 ghetto, crimal, parollee parents attacking him and the other white refs.

Like I said, that is the reason the ghetto schools have great records(wins vs losses) because the quality schools won't go any near them to play. My HS, a public HS, had one team that they would forfeit against in basketball because of stuff like that. There would be riots, kids and their parents getting jumped in the bathrooms and hallways by the ghetto kids and their parents. We had cops spraying mace in hallways to try and break up a riot at a basketball game twice before my H.S finally said " we will never play that team again, we will forfeit every game against them''.

That sucker punching guy should face MANDATORY jail time. I guarantee he is a parolee/ex-felon. GUARANTEED!!

One single butt-muncher of an assistant coach goes overboard and assaults a referee and we're back to the "Lynch the N/gger!" Days. Are you all stupid or just morons? How many soccer riots have you seen in Europe on TV? Embarrassments for civilized people. Same for Super Bowl "celebrations" that leave millions of $$$ in damage.

More and more we're seeing people acting in ways that are simply cowardly. COWARDLY! When someone assaults another unexpectedly and for no legitimate reason they need to go to jail. If we're going to have thought crime hate laws then they need to be enforced no matter what the race of the offender is. Whites, Blacks, Orientals etc... are all capable of racist thoughts and actions. To only apply prosecutions for hate crime laws against white people is as discriminatory as the offender's thoughts and acts. This cowardly punk coach sucker punched a game official and should answer for his act in a court of law. In the meantime his coaching career should end and he should be kept away from the kids and the games.

Texas passed a law some 15 or so years ago making it a class 1 misdemeanor or a class 3 felony to assault a game official. It put a stop to a lot of this type crap.

Those officials are paid officials from some local sports officials association. Most of these guys & gals are new to officiating and use the games to earn points to advance to higher levels, plus it give the opportunity to practice their mechanics. There are many officials that refuse to work youth sports because of things like this and having to put up with the a---ole parents.

Coaches and parent need to get a grip and realize that the kids learn from their lead. It is bad enough that they try to be like those super heroes (Thugs) they see on Sunday TV.

I have been a Coach now for close to 20 years, I started in a pee-wee league in Boca Raton FL. Now reside in NC. Coaching is a priviledge and and honor, anyone who abuses that honor should never and I mean never regain that priviledge again.

Our young men and women need role models that will uphold the highest standards of society, not the lowest. Our society needs this also. As a coach there are sometimes that I myself are not very happy with a call by a ref, but it has never even remotely come to mind to strike an official for a call. That to me is childish, like this grown man was throwing a tanturm or something.

Referees are doing their best and it is a very difficult and thankless job. I would like to see this guy call a game to see if he could do better.

Arthur, hate crime? Against what? The umpire being visably obese, and looking a tad like Michael Moore? I think that's a rather large stretch there.

Yes, there was a crime, as assault is a crime, and the ump would be well within his rights to press charges. This said, trying to make a hate crime out of it, is stretching things a bit...

To harshly judge a whole race of people based upon the actions of some shows their lack of evolution.

lol. How about you look around the globe and find a single "black" culture or predominantly black country that is even remotely close to leaving it's 3rd world status...?

My views of black folks stem from a lifetime of being around them; I don't "hate myself" nor was I "raised to be a racist"....I'm just entirely more objective about the "evolution" of black culture than you.

Where were "black folks" during the Age of Enlightenment? Where are the "black countries" that lead the world in Democracy or Progressivism? Where are the "black countries" that give more than they take? Where are the "black countries" that lead the world in science, architecture, engineering, medical science, physics, space flight, technology, or any of the other driving forces of the evolution of mankind...?

Google the "Dark Continent" and get a view of Africa from space....it's literally a "dark" continent.

It's not "racist" to be observant...

Why do some people think everything has to be about race? People do get angry for other reasons when sports are involved. When my daughter was in high school, one of their rival teams used to try to injure one of our best players on purpose and send him to the hospital just to get him out of the game-and it worked. Most of the players on both teams were the same race with some mixing on both sides. It was about WINNING, not about race! I went to private schools as a kid with mostly white or Asian kids, and there were a few cases of terrible sportsmanship. (It wasn't that I would have minded going to school with black kids or that I personally felt I should be separated from them-the fact was that some always registered at my school every year but never showed up for classes.) Anyway, once when I was in the marching band and our team won an away game against a team of other white kids that almost always beat us, as the band marched away behind the home team stands we had to dodge drinks and all sorts of objects that were being thrown down on us from the stands-I didn't feel safe until we got on the bus! Again, it was about winning, not about race!

Obviously, I don't know this particular man's motive; I just wanted to point out that not every case of anger and violence is about race, especially when sports are involved. Surely all of you have seen parents and coaches go off on kids and other adults for sports-related reasons. Having said that, no one should be able to get away with assault like this. This man should certainly face a penalty for his actions, especialy since he was supposed to set an example for kids.

I'm not sure how highly evolved or objective it is to stereotype an entire race of people when the countries to which you refer have not had the same opportunities you have had-i.e., the white people of the U.S. were never enslaved for years or dominated by other countries and benefitted from centuries of enlightened government and culture. (The U.S. didn't just spring up out of nowhere, either-it built on the Magna Carta, which built on democratic principles from ancient Greece as well as JudaoChristian principles, etc.) Where are the black INDIVIDUALS who lead the world in science, architecture, engineering, medical science, physics, etc? If you weren't so blinded by bias, you might see them.

UPDATE: This guy was arrested for battery on a sports official, a felony. He also has a 33-page rap sheet with 20 arrests, including "a variety of felony convictions, including robbery and cocaine distribution. He has also been collared for cocaine possession; aggravated battery; resisting arrest; battery on a law enforcement officer; indecent exposure; and aggravated assault with a firearm."

What was he even doing around kids in the first place? My guess is that someone on the team knew, but didn't care. I saw a new report saying that each team, rather than the league, was responsible for running the background checks...clearly a BIG mistake.

Behavior like an animal. And when animals behave with violence, they are less likely to remain in our keep. Often they are destroyed because their proclivity for violence makes they undesirable to have around or be around. Wouldn't it be nice if it worked this way with people too.

On a real note I can't believe they're showing something like this compared to all the important news of the world. The media are puppets dolls and y'all are mindless children.

Romney sure knows how to play the race card- i mean damn how many companies has he bought off for this type of news to be front and center???

The guy acts more like a gang banger than a youth coach.

Lock him up for a couple of years so he can reflect on what uncivil behavior can get you. He's definitely not a role model for kids.

Actions speak louder than words. In a game all about competition, sportsmanship and having fun, those boys will go home and always remember how a grown man resorted to violence to solve his problems with another man. Shame on him for the terrible example he has created for these impressionable youth. How many kids will look at him and remember how violent he can become from now on? Will they trust and respect him or fear him?

Please let someone follow up on this and arrest this guy for assault. Hopefully the kids will never have to see this guy or be around him again. The sad thing is, there were alot of people out there who acted like animals also and given half a chance would have done the same thing to this referee. These are people that are supposed to set an example for these kids, but instead they are the reason that many of these kids will not have a fair shot at living a "normal" life. Shame on all of those that acted in a senseless manner and they should be called out for it.

Geez. And other grown "men" on the said "coaches" team were high five-ing each other because of that fools actions. More than disgusting. Shame on him is right. Shame on all of those on that teams so called "adult" advisers who were involved, and thought it was okay to attack that volunteer Ref. Throw him in jail or at least charge him with assault. Someone needs to do something to let the kids know that it is wrong to act in this manner.

Taken to this extreme is still rare, but I've coached youth sports year round for the last decade and parents as well as coaches are exceedingly out of control. How it's manifested varies, but youth sports has always been a volatile mixture and it is only getting worse in today's society with its lack of customary levels of respect for your fellow man.

It's been years ago, but in one of my first state level tournament events we had the classic curmudgeon tournament director. BUT he made it very clear at the outset when he said:

"Control yourself and control your parents. All I need is your players and my umpires. I'll start clearing the park with the first person that gets out of line, and I won't stop til its players and umps only."

Since that day 7 years ago, I often think about that man and wonder how long til parents have to be kept away and watch the events online. It would be better for the kids and coaches, I know that much for certain.

Sad thing is the kids can't control who their coach is.. punishing them for him being a thug won't teach them anything other then the system is unfair.

What's unfair about punishing the team for the coach's behavior? It's completely fair. Here's how you explain it - Kids, everyone on the team is responsible for the team. If one teammate loses their temper, you've all lost your temper and you're all responsible for how your team acts. Its not fair to let your coach get away with behavior that you and your teammates are punished for. That's why he's getting arrested and why your team has to forfeit the game. What, it's not fair? That's life kids, you can and will be judged and punished by the company you keep.

What did the other team do wrong that *they* couldn't play? Nothing right? So how is it fair for one team to come ready to play in a sportsmanlike fashion to not get to play because the coach of the other team can't control himself?

I coached youth baseball, basketball, soccer and football girls and boys and football coaches are the worst. they think they can say or do whatever they want and get away with it.

I reffed soccer and currently run the chain gang for my sons high school home games and it's ridiculous what the opposing coaches say to the kids, ref'sand each other during the game. Usually it's when they are losing badly, which is most times this year.

I've had conversations with ref's, calmly and with the rules on my side of the conversation, ref's make mistakes, but you have to know how to communicate like an adult. I don't put up with my kids or players saying anything derogatory towards opposing coaches, ref's or players, you have to teach them from day one how to be a good sport. It's all about mentoring.

I would suspect this guy is going to jail for assaulting an official, in some states it's the same as assaulting a police officer. The team should be disqualified for the remainder of the season and anyone on that coaching staff should get a lifetime ban, it's the responsibility of the head coach to control his players, coaches and parents during the entire game. I know Little League baseball has zero tolerance rules, hopefully there football program is the same.

As a youth soccer coach, I had each parent sign an agreement concerning their and their child's behavior during both practices and games. The metro-league had already provided the rules, but I had a signed statement of understanding from each parent and athlete.

I still caught hell from parents when I would put their kids out of practice, and some parents couldn't believe they were ejected from the park during games. But they had little argument with the signed docs in their face.

although the officials are not displaying identifying initials, the "referee" SHOULD be the guy wearing the white hat. the official who was assaulted was more likely the "umpire". check your rule book.

A violent reaction to a violent game. We should expect better of people who mentor our youth, but I don't hold out much hope for that. Our children learn by example. I don't watch football anymore because it's a violent game & this video has reinforced the reasons I don't watch it. The sad thing is the children will suffer for this violent action.

I hope he mans up about the issue. He may or may not be charged and may or may not go to jail. But really, if that's all that happens, the damage is already done. The only way to turn it around would be if he publicly apologizes and faces the music of whatever happens. That's the only way the kids can learn a real lesson from this. If jail were a good deterrent, they wouldn't have to be letting so many people out due to overcrowding. For people unwilling to take personal responsibility for their actions, jail will never be a true deterrent. If he goes to jail a boy, he's statistically more likely to just come out an older, bigger, dumber boy. Being a man isn't about age, it's about actions. It's not about getting respect, it's about giving it.

I sure hope that Justice does prevail for those Kids and the Refs. It is more than likely he will be banned from the sport and it wont be just him the entire coaching staff since they stormed the field and made matters worse thus leading up to the incident of the punching. There is no way I would allow my child to remain in a team if anything of that nature happened. They are a true embarrassment to the sport of Football. The Parents on that opposing team I sure hope and pray for their kids that do what is right for their kids. Being a Youth football/high school football parent myself there are a lot of parents that take the sport for granted and live vicariously through their kids sports because of their own missed opportunities growing up themselves. Football is a excellent sport and great for boys to learn teamwork with their peers and accomplish great things in School. John Madden started his career here back in the 60's and his love and inspiration for the sport i would hope be embraced by everyone who loves the sport, that is what should be given to the kids.
