FBI: Man stuffed ATMs with fake cash

A man accused of stuffing two ATMs in Manhattan with counterfeit cash was arrested Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Gene Carlo Pena, 26, was taken into custody at Kennedy Airport around 4 p.m. after voluntarily returning to New York from the Dominican Republic, the FBI said. He worked for a company that serviced the ATMs.

He faces several charges, including embezzlement and other charges related to counterfeit currency. It's not clear if he has an attorney.

The amateurish fake bills were put in ATMs at two Chase bank branches to replace cash that had been stolen. The bank was short a total of $11,000.

The counterfeit bills were blank on one side and authorities believe they were meant to trick the ATM into believing it was carrying a full complement of cash.

However, the machines were able to distinguish most of the fake bills from real ones, a bank official said. The NYPD and Secret Service assisted in the investigation.

Why was an illegal hired to fill our cash machines? Don't we have US Citizens that would like that job? Also the guy flees the country, gets away with it and then agrees to come back in order to go to jail. So our jails are better then freedom in the Dominican Republic? This will cost the tax payers $25,000 a yr for three meals, exercise, medicine......great story. Why didn't we leave him in the DR it would have been cheaper for all of us.

WOW, talk about "world's dumbest crook". God knows the economy is bad, but its sad when a machine (ATM) is smarter than the crook trying to rob it.

Hey Jen Webb, dumbest isn't the word, but they(i say they because he is prabably just as stupid to have an accomplis for something like this) would have gotten caught anyway, because it would have gotten traced back to him with ease.He probably would have been better off having said he was robbed at gun point before he even got to the A.T.M. in the first place, with a little preperation.

Got some even worse news for all my peeps out here, if you have Federal Reserve notes in your pocket their all fake! barry and benny and the ink jets are in the basement of the Federal Reserve printing more and more and more. There not backed by anything except the full faith and credit of the US government. Which is 16 trillion in debt, and headed to Greek like status by 2020. I can see barry in 2013 having a trillion dollar bill like Zimbabwe has with his picture on the front with that shix eating grin he has on his face.Soon the only decision you will have to make concerning the dollar is do you head to the store to by TP with them. Or is it cheaper to wipe your ass with them.

Okay, one: they are printed by the US Treasury. two: they are backed by you, me, and every worker in the United States. For someone with Army in their name it's frightning how little you know of the government.

Hey boomer, the bank makes plenty of money stealing your money legally, they dont need to risk pocket money ( 11,ooo ) in conpiracy, and counterfiting. If he did have an accomplis,im sure the guy they caught will be singing Povarotti. And if there is,he deserves to get caught also for thinking this is a good robbery.

The treasury makes worthless money every day. The Oblah-blah crew issues worthless money every day. Other Countries refuse our worthless money every day. Just WHAT did this young man do that is soooo out of line? I'll tell you what he did, he brought to the surface just how stupid and Communistic the DAN in the white out-house is and just how stupid and dumb the FLEA's are. His fake money is worth MORE in paper content than the junk issued by the treasury. A neighbor just returned from So. Africa and their "Rand" is becoming more stable as OUR Dollar sinks to new lows. The shop owners in Capetown will NOT ACCEPT American currency.

Duh. An acquaintance of mine got caught with a stack of $10s in the basement only priinted on one side. He planned to print them on the other side but didn't get the chance. His first batch was okay but his second batch was what got him. When caught he said damn he didn't know they were making money in the basement.

Actually, $11,000 in the Dominican Republic is probably enough money to retire on, since most wages there are well below the poverty level.
