FBI: Man stuffed ATMs with fake cash

A man accused of stuffing two ATMs in Manhattan with counterfeit cash was arrested Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Gene Carlo Pena, 26, was taken into custody at Kennedy Airport around 4 p.m. after voluntarily returning to New York from the Dominican Republic, the FBI said. He worked for a company that serviced the ATMs.

He faces several charges, including embezzlement and other charges related to counterfeit currency. It's not clear if he has an attorney.

The amateurish fake bills were put in ATMs at two Chase bank branches to replace cash that had been stolen. The bank was short a total of $11,000.

The counterfeit bills were blank on one side and authorities believe they were meant to trick the ATM into believing it was carrying a full complement of cash.

However, the machines were able to distinguish most of the fake bills from real ones, a bank official said. The NYPD and Secret Service assisted in the investigation.

An accused remains innocent until proven guilty. The person is merely accused of an illegal act. We do not know if he is guilty. I hope those who already presumed him guilty will not be a jury member at his trial, if enough evidence warrants one.

I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time.

The Fed does not print money; the U.S. Treasury does that, and the U.S. Mint makes the coins. If you canuse a neighborhood bank or a state chartered bank or a credit unior, you will usually avoid ATM fees and checking account fees. I pay no fees at my bank----for anything. As long as one has a direct deposit, there are no fees. If one is over 65, there are no fees. No fees on credit cards either, and I get rebates on a VISA card----no limits whatsoever. Shop around. I guess if you live in a big city, perhaps your options are limited.

I live in a big city and as part of a credit union I don't have any fees whatsoever. I left chase after 2 months when they nickeled and dimed me every chance they could. There was once a time banks used to pay you hold your money. How times have changed.

Poor thing, a village idiot on the loose. But just goes to show that Chase will hire anyone.
