Cops: Denver bar set on fire to cover five murders

Denver police believe a bar was set fire to hide the killings of the five people found inside. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Updated at 11:11 a.m.: Five people found dead inside a torched Denver bar were killed before the building was set on fire, officials said Wednesday.

Denver police Det. John White confirmed the deaths of four women and one man at Fero's Bar & Grill.

“It appears there was some trauma to the bodies – it also appears to be arson,” White told reporters at a morning briefing, the Denver Post reported.

Police and fire officials said they are investigating the incident as an arson-homicide, the Denver Post reported.

Denver Police Cmdr. Ron Saunier said detectives believe the victims were killed before the fire started and the blaze was set to mask the homicide, 9news.com reported.

"It's going to be a long, drawn-out investigation at this point," Saunier said, according to the Post.

The names of the victims were not immediately released, and autopsies were pending. Police do not believe anyone else was in the bar at the time.

Firefighters were first called to the scene at 1:47 a.m. Wednesday, and the fire was declared under control around 2:22 a.m.

The small bar is situated between a check-cashing business and a tailor shop in a strip mall on Colorado Blvd.

Probably a botched robbery attempted coverup by a subhuman moron.

I agree. Sounds to me like someone ('s) waited until just before they closed and had the most cash along with the least patrons left. Robbed & shot them, then tried to cover everything up with the fire. "Scumbags"

When this story is updated, ten bucks say the deceased were shot. This is why I carry...

Stay tuned......

God bless you Sir. I tell everyone. The times are brutal. Get a carry permit, take a good defensive course. Do the same for the wife and or girlfriend. Protect your family, protect your kids, protect your home. The only scum that want gun control are criminals, terrorists or the spineless. I'd rather have 12 Jurors decide my fate than 6 pallbearers carry me through the gate.

Maybe coincidently, the October 16, 2012 episode of Mike Kenda, Homicide Hunter was about a guy who kills three people in a neighborhood bar and sets the bar on fire to cover up the crimes. The true incident depicted on the TV show also happened in Colorado. Maybe a "copy cat" covering up a robbery. Robbery, for drugs was the motive in the Homicide Hunter episode. Think the show gave someone ideas? What a damn shame.

The Lazaro - good sentiment - but maybe not applicable in this case. Most states do not let you carry into an establishment where the primary source of income is from sale of alcohol. Responsible gun owners know that guns and alcohol mix about as well as driving and texting. Although I will admit that "Bar and Grill" gives some fudge factor in this case - but without knowing which was more active, the "Bar" or the "Grill", I really can't say.

Last night they were showing on TV a similar case in Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda (Season 2)
Last Call For Murder, where five people are murdered in a cold-blooded robbery at a shopping center, and much of the evidence is lost in a fire. I wonder if this killer was watching the show.

2kmaro,

Correct however, when "concealed" nobody knows you're carrying. Even if I go into bars that do not allow it, what's the difference?

It's illegal to shoot 5 innocent people and light the place on fire too so, I figure if I happen to be in an establishment where a gunman (s) come in and try to rob & kill me/others and I take them out first defending myself along with a whole lot of other people, they can take me to jail for breaking the law for carrying a concealed weapon within an establishment but I'll still be alive along with the others. :-)

Thanks Lazaro...

Have a good day...

2kmaro - But in this case, this is Colorado. Unless a private property owner posts a sign stating "No Firearms Allowed", and unless the person carrying is under the influence of alcohol to the slightest degree, there is no prohibition against carrying a concealed weapon via CCW into an establishment that serves alcohol.

I am both Law Enforcement here in Colorado, and I teach the CCW courses to civilians. I know the applicable law.

There is a group of gun naysayers, who whine, "But there is nothing we can do!" If people like this had tried to settle this country they would have rolled over dead at the first sign of Indians.

Now that the story is updated, it's 4 women and 1 guy. Hmmmmm

This may change things a bit here whereas it's starting to sound like some dude went in and shot his EX then her new boyfriend, shot the bartenders (& maybe his Ex' friend) then lit it up.

Of course this is all speculation but it seems when you read about these tragedies, it's either a robbery/murder or a scorned lover. All in all this is a terrible tragedy man. Sick Fk (s)

Try to be original, at least. All the BBQ jokes were overdone after Wako. Other than that, there is nothing inappropriate about gallows humor. It's a time honored way for men to express fear and loathing, without exposing weakness.

Maxwell's Silver Hammer, your own namesake song is gallows humor, about an actual London killer. Hypocrite much?

The news coverage in Colorado says they were murdered - then the fire set to cover up the murders. It just happened today in the wee hours of the morning. Did you think the investigation would be completed by now? LOL. The police did not want to comment on how the people were murdered until after the autopsies. Obviously, right now they have no idea who did this.

Colorado was awesome until the California invasion about 10 years ago. All the idiots that destroyed that state decided to move to the other side of the rocks and screw Colorado up with their inflated housing prices and other ignorance. I left. I miss the lifestyle there, but not all those transplants.

This was always a good little restaurant when I was there. It has been owned by a greek family for lots of years and was known primarily for cheep steaks. I wish them and the affected families all all the best.

What in the world is going on in Colorado these days? From my current vantage across the pond, it seems like one horrific story after another from there. I always thought Colorado was something of a bucolic, peaceful, full-of-natural-beauty, fun-loving state, but something has triggered a remarkable spate of bad news steeped in violence from there. I guess it stands out, because one expects such stories from traditionally whacky places like Texas, Pennsylvania, California and Florida. But, Colorado??

I don't think all the crazies go to Colorado. Look at all the violence that has come out of Colorado. Every state in the union has crazies. Our young people from teen agers and up to late 20's. seem to be the age for a lot of violence. Teen age suicides are on the rise. Teen agers are killing their parents, grand parents. Mothers are killing their children. This is happening all across America. Some comment was made that Colorado was a great place until the Californians started moving in and messing everything up. In response to that, California was a great place until all the illegal imigrants came dancing into this state from all countries. Colorado is no exception. I am deeply sorry for all the parents who have lost children to violence in the schools and in the plublic places. I don't kknow the answer to all of this, but I do believe our children see too much voilence in movies, in their homes. Play video games that shows voilence, which are kill, kill--die, die. I believe that this kind of stuff gets in their head and they start wonderng how it would feel to kill someone--- The family value or structure in a lot of this has gone bye bye. There are some parents who let their kids watch anything, no mointering. There are millions of good parents, and teenager, and young people in our country. I wish the good things they accomplish was on the news, instead of this kind of thing. Our kids are our future. But a teen ager didn't do this, an adult is responsible. Somewhere along the way of this persons life, he became capable of such violence. I Pray for the families of these people who were murdered.. It is a long hard road for them of pain and grief. God Bless you all.

Completely tasteless! So why write tasteless thoughts?

Simply to offend gay people? Or simply to use sick humor prior to saying "prayers for the families".

Four women and one man were killed. They have families and friends. This is a nightmare for a lot of people. Your attempt at humor is hugely misplaced!

                        Bet you're a "Christian."

wasnt there a time when journalists reported news when they actually had information to make sure things were accurate?
Well, I guess as long as we set our standards low, we can never be disappointed.

"Breaking News" means it just happened. This isn't TV, where it is solved in an hour.
