NJ residents warned about sophisticated 'James Bond Gang' burglars

A group of thieves being called the "James Bond Gang" has been caught on camera breaking into a New Jersey home. In the video, one suspect can be seen using his rear end to open the door. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

A group of thieves with an affinity for burglarizing well-to-do New Jersey neighborhoods appears to have struck again, according to police, who say an Oct. 6 break-in has hallmarks of the gang's work.

The burglars, known as the "James Bond Gang," are believed to have broken into dozens of homes for more than a year and a half in the affluent towns of Somerset and Morris Counties in New Jersey, among other areas, according to CBS New York. In March, the New Providence, N.J. deputy chief of police described how the gang -- a group of between 30 and 50 burglars -- operated.

They typically come through "a forced entry, a dash to the bedroom to grab jewelry and cash, then a quick exit, usually through a different door," Scott Torre explained, according to NJ.com. "The thieves pick up jewelry and cash because the gold in the jewelry can be melted down within 24 hours and is unidentifiable."

In the latest incident, a Chatham, N.J., resident returned home from vacation on Oct. 7, and discovered that his house had been broken into, NJ.com reported.

The burglars stole mostly jewelry from the Chatham house, whose owner was not identified. The burglars moved fast and disabled the home’s alarm and video surveillance system as soon as they got into the house, but not before surveillance managed to capture four masked individuals forcing open the front door of the home, NJ.com reported.

According to NBC New York, the name James Bond was coined because in the 1980s, an original gang of burglars who successfully targeted fancy areas used a 007-style BMW as an escape car, which was also equipped with a pipe that would spray oil at pursuers and a flip-up license plate with a blinding light below it that could be aimed at pursuers.

Police said the current-era James Bond Gang usually hits homes near major highways so they can make a quick escape, adding that when some members get arrested, new ones are recruited, according to CBS.

Steven Crawford, police chief of Mendham Township, told NJ.com the gang is "honed in on burglary and seems to be rather structured."

"It's a problem, but they're going to get caught," Crawford said, according to NJ.com. "It's just a matter of when."

Actually, NJ has several of the richest towns in the US due to its close proximity to NYC. Alpine, NJ is a prime example.

ANYWAYS... I'm just waiting for these guys to get shot by an armed home owner. that would be awesome.

And yet New Jersey has laid off almost their entire police force. Why is that if it is such a rich state??? Oh that's right, because Chris Christie wants to make his rich donors happier with tax breaks, and darn the middle class and lower class, the people who actually work for a living...

Blame Chris Christie, not Obama. Vote for Obama/Biden 2012...and out with gov Christie!

Also, offtopic, but conservatives are idiots.

newswinner101 - NJ has NOT "laid off almost it's entire police force." That is such a stupid comment, it's actually funny. In fact, the cities in NJ that have had to lay off police officers are the ones that have been run by DEMOCRATS for DECADES and who have spent those cities into abject poverty with their corruption and waste.

The conservative areas of the state, where republicans are in charge are mostly doing pretty d*mn good. I live in one of those areas, one of the richest counties in the entire country. Our property taxes have stayed stable the few years - yes, largely thanks to Christie and our local republicans, and we have plenty of police officers.

I'd say the only idiot around here is YOU.

Actually Governor Christie is the only governer ever to be in that position that has ever listened to the tax payers of New Jersey. For decades upon decades the unions have held sway over the tax payers and slowly suffocated anyone and everyone who paid taxes, every year or every other year union demands in all unions (Teachers, police, fire, etc) have rose and rose with no end in sight.. they have it so nice its hard to believe what they are entitled and they (the union members) all feel they are entitled to whatever they ask, its madness, sheer lunacy and they have gotten away with it for years and years. Its still horrible but Christie is trying.. taxes in NJ are stifling and unions take a big cut (their constituents).. these are people (I know many a fire man and cop) who get weeks off work, work candy cream schedules of 3 on 4 off, make 6 figures, do what they want and they STILL whine and bitch like sissies having a fit. Thank GOD Christie has stepped in to aid the tax payers.. tax payers have been fed up forever! stop the madness. The only reason they whine is because they know they have it so good and that the pig trough is going dry and they are squealing like pigs because their honey pot is running out.. ask a NJ tax payer, they will explain it all in detail!

=================================

Are you sure? Did one or more of them have guitars? Could the other 3 have been Glenn Frey, Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit? Maybe they're misnamed, maybe it should be the Eagles Gang.

Well, if they're only hitting well-to-do neighborhoods, I'm safe, thanks to the recession.

In all seriousness, if things don't turn around for the Middle Class, and we keep seeing articles about the rich getting richer, we will probably see more articles like this. Desperate people do desperate things, think of all the lawlessness in the 30s.

    #1.18 - Wed Oct 17, 2012 4:20 PM EDT

funny all the comments about "take these guys out" and "hope a homeowner with a gun kills them", and I was just reading an article about a homeowner who took out a suspisious person in his private neighborhood, where there have been reported, recent home burglaries (and he was in a scuffle with this guy). And everyone is calling him a murderer because the victim was a young black male. Interesting duality.

so if one or more of these guys get themselves killed, and they happen to be young, black males, is that also cold blooded murder ?

Also, while we are at it, quit labeling things as Gate, such as Spygate, Irangate, etc. It is being used to label any type of scandal or gossip and is beyond annoying now. Thank you.

Pablo - I salute you for playing your role well. You display a very well developed capability for consuming, accepting, and embracing the status quo propaganda. I'm pleased to see such an upstanding citizen, willing to play their part to defend the wealthy, who - let's face it - Suffer greatly.

Oh sure. Corporations may have until fortunes in overseas accounts which they hide. Executives may be bathing in showers of compensation which most Americans can't even fathom.

But they do suffer. They suffer greatly.

Because they don't yet have everything. It's not enough to ship jobs overseas; It isn't enough to give tax cuts when their taxes are already lower than they were under Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, Nixon, etc (and OH! How they suffered under such Communist Socialist Presidents like Eisenhower!).

The wealthy must given it all. Everything. They must absolutely impoverish the 99%.

Sadly, it still won't be enough. It will never be enough.

Not until working Americans are reduced to the status of people commonly found in Third World Countries.

When I see people like you, spouting about taxes and regulation - people who have no freaking clue about the specifics of American history in this regard, nor any desire to educate themselves beyond what is spooned down their throats by corporate owned media empires - it makes me cringe.

Those like yourself, who espouse such nonsense as to imply that Democrats don't support the 1%, display an ignorance as vast and unforgiving as the Sahara. A lack of actual knowledge which extends limitless, without surcease nor succor, never to be quenched by actual facts, are a key reason this country has been in decline for 30 years.

If i where police I would setup surveillance on streets that are most likely to be targeted and I would have a plan in place to quickly respond to break ins and cut off their rout of escape. Heck, maybe the police could even find a home in the area that is being sold and make it look like it has been bought, then do the place up to the hilt to attract these guys and then trap them.

The more organized the criminals are, the more cunning the police have to be.

Or the ones along highways and in those areas that have already been targeted. Reading a story is a good thing. They clearly lay out the area these people target and their MO, so, it is not far fetched that as a part of a wide ranging operation that they may stick some bait out for these "hungry" bad guys to bite.

There are a number of ways to go about bringing the bad guys to you and I would not be surprised if one of those methods are ultimately used.

My guard shack eh? Why would a digital electronics tech have a guard shack? lol

When LIBERALS wake up we should sterilize and eliminate voting privileges for all families (mother, father (if he can be found-else cut the benefits in 1/2), children) living off any type welfare (food, housing, homeless, living, ...) for over 6 months. This would eventually lead to an end of poverty, crime and make the future better instead of perpetuating the problem as we've been doing since the 1960's

Grilled Cheese... shut up. Seriously. Be big enough to simply let opinions or thoughts or in this case COMMENTS that are not your own be someone else's. Geez. I actually agree w/ the peeps that made the comment, which is meant to be facetious - not fact. Homeowners and Renters will most likely cover the physical loses. Its like getting in a car accident - dang the car's a mess - but the person or people in it are of greater concern. So at least these guys are burglarizing empty (at the moment) homes. If there is a sentimental piece of jewelry stolen that is sad, even if it can't be replaced - at least the memories attached to it are still intact.

Anyway! I hope these guys get caught and do so without endangering anyone else but themselves.

Honestly IMO why are they calling them James Bond Gang? I know it said in the story why, and the other gang made some sense but these guys just grab and go. Maybe if they were using some fancy gadgets but really? Can't we be more creative? And yes I know that isn't really the point here but just wanted to bring it up.

Otherwise hope they catch these scumbags or they find a homeowner with a gun on the next one. 5-10yrs with 12 hr days of community service (ditch digging, trash pick up, ect. whatever crappy job physical job that can be thought off) 6 days a week should do it. Day 7 they can reflect and study or do something that will make them productive when out. Add a couple lashes if we could but I'll give on that.

If we can't even discuss a robbery article without blaming the other party, how do you think this country will ever get to a point where we actually get things done regardless of the political party of the person who is doing it? You look like a fool constantly blaming somebody else with no basis for the claim. Be the bigger person.

Obama extending Bush's Tax Cuts - doesn't seem like he's doing a whole lot of redistributing there, now does it?

Obama pushing more Free Trade Job Off-shoring (Panama, Columbia, S. Korea). Gee Beav, not sure how exporting jobs to foreign countries will hurt the wealthy, usually it tends to increase their $$ while harming working Americans.

Obama continuing Bush's no-strings-bailout of Wall Street Predators. Now that right there is some mighty fine wealth redistribution from the wealthy to the working Americans, isn't it?

Obama appointing Industry Insiders (ex: Monsanto Vice President to the FDA). Not sure how that's hurting the wealthy either.

Obama cutting Social Security Taxes. Dastardly wealth redistribution strikes again! (and a small voice mutters.. but Social Security taxes stop at the first 105K / year earned...)

Joey - I saute you, sir. Your ability to formulate an opinion regardless of the actual facts is a true testament to your character and intellectual abilities.

Sadly, that testament is also an indictment.

Based on your assertions, it's safe to surmise that factual information isn't even a speed bump in your thought process.

Go out and buy a really big dorberman dog or a real wolf and that'll stop the bugulars.Get 1 for front door,1 for yard,1 for bedroom,1 for back door. Have someone pick up your mail and boxes, leave lights on,tv on,curtains closed, and leave a car in the drive way.DO NOT leave porch lights on that a sure sign your not home. Also by security lights that come on a dusk and off at dawn.Have friends stay in your house while your on vacation,or family memebers. Empty houses are easy spotted to thievies.

If there are close to 50, catch two or three and start dropping them out of windows until they give up the rest. There is no reason society has to put up with such scum.

Well, if they ARE really smart, they leave no chance of tracing anyone caught back to them, then they will NEVER be caught.

Glad to see a group of burglars tageting rich folks....instead of middle- and working-class folks.

Rich folks - with all the excess cash they have - can most easily repair their lives after being the victims of a crime.

Middle- and working-class folks, when robbed from...it hurts much, much more....as these folks have a much harder time repairing their lives due to financial difficulty. Many of the middle- and working-class folks live paycheck to paycheck - something rich folks don't experience.

I do NOT condone any type of crime. However, it IS nice to hear of a robbery gang that is ONLY preying on the wealthy.

Jared, you are an ass and ignorant to boot. i am not a 1%er or a 47% er. But my personal finances have improved over the last 4 years because i work hard. Something you obviously are incapable or unwilling to do.

Some guy was in our house, my dad and my uncle grabbed him and beat the living @!$%# out of him before they called the police.... They told the cops that he "slipped and fell" while running through the house.... They just smurked and arrested him.... I bet that guy never did that again!!!!!

These guys are thugs, and the hoodie apparently is now used like a mask, I guess we need to outlaw a hoodie.
