Missing Oregon barista’s cell phone found; police searching for clues

AP Photo/DMV via City of Gresham

This DMV photo provided by the City of Gresham, Ore., shows Whitney Heichel.

The cell phone of a missing Oregon woman was recovered Friday, police said, and they hope it will provide clues in the Starbucks barista's disappearance.

Whitney Heichel, 21, was last seen by her husband in a Gresham, Ore. apartment on Tuesday morning, when she left for her work shift to a Starbucks only about five minutes away from her home, police said.

Previous story: Oregon woman, 21, vanished during five-minute commute to work

Gresham Police said Friday they are trying to pull data and fingerprints from Heichel’s cell phone, and called it “a very favorable find,” according to NBC station KGW in Portland. Children playing in a field found the phone and it was turned in to police, KGW reported.

Authorities are also using dogs to search the area where the phone was found, according to KGW. That is about two miles from where Heichel’s abandoned SUV was found, as well as about a mile-and-a-half from a gas station where her bank card was used the morning she disappeared, KGW also reported. Her vehicle is a black 1999 Ford Explorer with tinted taillights and an Oregon license plate. Police found the SUV with a shattered window, as if someone had rummaged around inside.

Police also said Friday that Heichel’s husband is “not a suspect” in the disappearance, however no one has been cleared in this case, The Oregonian newspaper in Portland, Ore. reported.

"The longer she is gone, the more this is concerning to us," Gresham police Lt. Claudio Grandjean told reporters Friday morning, according to the newspaper.

Hiechel is 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs 120 pounds.

Officials say any information to law enforcement is helpful, The Oregonian reported, and about 50 tips came in overnight. Anyone with information is asked to call the Gresham Police Tip Line.

there's got to be more witnesses to any abduction that may have taken place. hope they step up soon. and the cell phone should provide some clues, too.

I hope I love a good mystery.. Im sure the first thing the kidnapper did was take it, but maybe he used her phone to change his status on facebook to, Hey just kidnapped a girl thats it. Wouldn't be the first dumb-ass who did..

Just sayin..

I read this phrase often "Just sayin". WHAT actually does this mean ? "I'd like to contribute a thought." "Here's my 2 cents worth." "My thoughts but, they don't really count." "I have no idea, but I'd like to be a part of your discussion." "I don't really count." "I have NO real knowledge here, but would like to be heard, knowing that I'm stupid." "I'm saying something,BUT,..I'm not really saying something or anything." Yes thats it. I'm sure Fraud would see the "slip",in your ending with "the first dumb ass who did." being YOUR SIGNATURE.I think you should look into, just being Silent, you could make it an art form of sorts.

    Really dmatthews?

If you want a good mystery watch TV, a movie or read a book. If you are excited because a real life woman is missing and most likely dead the longer she's missing, maybe you should be looked at.

    JUST SAYIN' !!

Such a response is truly delightful. You see using set phrase,"just sayin" is like wearing a sign that says,"Hi I'm very uneducated, but want to be listened to ,also I want to be 'part' of this although I really know NOTHING,and can really contribute NOTHING of any value." Now go back and read and reread what you wrote,I'm sure that you will concur. And too, consult daily news ,TV and papers, books, authors of note,H.G.Wells perhaps. Then make a list of ALL the users of the phrase "just sayin",that you hear and know.SEE you WILL see where YOU belong.just sayin........................

dmatthews3, Ive League? Thou jests sir! I'm from the Bronx, got kicked out of school for slapping a ICB,Irish Chistian Brother across the face knocking him to the pavement (my regret? I shoulda stompted him too.)See in those days, they could HIT YOU/US,and THAT they did HARD,and with "Thick Leather Straps" or Punched us in the face/body HARD.They called it corporal punishment.Your Parents had to sign that it was OK with them first.A very good school,All Hallows,in the Bronx. At the time "the crowd" "the cattle" said: "I heard that","know what I'm sayin","Know what I mean" was a biggy.I saw and heard this, and the people who said it.I DID NOT want to be one of THEM.So I read and read daily 2-6 hours,I love information. OK ?.......OK,means Old Kinderhook, the the Town, and nickname of President Martin Van Buren,he'd sign memo's etc. with the initials O.K. it started to mean it's correct,accepted,right,.....OK ?

Your first mistake was saying you like a good mystery. Can't you hear how callous that sounds? It's like the last thing one should say to a terrified loved one of the missing. Did you enjoy the kidnapping of the, 10yr old Denver girl, who was found murdered? They haven't found the killer yet, is that a good mystery?

I'm sure that is not what you intended to sound like, but re-read what you wrote and think about how you would feel if you had a spouse disappear and people out there say, Oh, I like a good mystery. it was just so cold, 'just sayin'.

not a good sign, why did it take so long to trace where the phone was, only thing I can think of is, the had removed the battery, so it could not be traced; there is more than one person involved, time is not on the side of the police at this two days.

      #1.11 - Fri Oct 19, 2012 9:45 PM EDT

BT-NYC, since you're being technical, in your post above you made some mistakes. When you stated; "And too, consult daily news ,TV and papers, books, authors of note,H.G.Wells perhaps." It is incorrect to start a sentence with a conjunction. I believe the word that you were trying to use in the same sentence was two, not too. When you made the following statement; "SEE you WILL see where YOU belong" you failed by trying to conjugate the same verb. Not to mention, your use of run-on sentences is atrocious. I'm just saying.

Are you aware that if you gave those lessons at your local high school you could get paid for it? But Jake I have to tell you, we're not having an English lesson here, we are discussing the tragic disappearance of a young lady. So get the hell off my post will ya!

I think it's a jealous boyfriend,or girlfriend, thats who the cops look at next. Then ALL who could just 'see her',hence "The Nut Jobs".Like I said,A SPRAY,that is RED DYE,and smells like a Skunk.Did you ever smell a skunk? Every single damn public road, highway, alleyway and park in this entire country should be canvassed with high definition, no-nonsense security cameras. I cannot stand seeing another helpless person harmed. To hell with my freedom of privacy- if I'm not in my own home then by all means keep a camera on me at all time. This kind of thing just cannot be allowed to happen. Hoping to hell they find this person safe somehow....

Nice idea in theory but definately not practical. Keep thinking but don't hurt yourself.

You're going to give away your freedom of privacy to prevent events that are so rare they make national news when they happen? I'm sure there's no way cameras on us everywhere we go could be used inappropriately right?

London is covered all over the place with cameras to help discourage crime. Part of the reason why their crime rates are low. Someone is always watching. I'm not sure if I would agree with cameras being up all over the place because you do lose your privacy, but you also need to figure out if it is worth it to some degree if it saves lives. It's a grey area right now on that decision, but whether they had cameras up or not, hopefully they find this woman soon.

                #5.5 - Fri Oct 19, 2012 7:00 PM EDT

Sorry State of Awareness. You should check out crime statistics before posting something like that. The UK has the highest crime rate in all of western Europe. Their violent crime rate is triple the rate here in the US.

In fact, the UK's violent crime rate went up 80% in the first 10 years after they made guns illegal. Cameras don't stop crime. They may help identify some criminals in the act but it doesn't deter crime.

no no no....you cant do that...because bad people are always at the wheel and in charge....not good people, we'd rather spend our lives with loved ones and doing fun things...not spying...

you will never get a good person to do a good job spying, ratting out other humans

...maybe a good person doing a bad job, or a bad person doing a good job, but in the end they will get power hungry and become bad anyways...

you cannot give a human that kind of power, we cannot handle it and become the evil one...all humans are incapable of having that power

Camera's everywhere? 1984??? Me thinks you're overreacting with unclear thought. Now what to do,'That IS possible'.Looks to me like, sombody approached,..she knew them and did not hit the gas.She at first put the window up,or durring their talking he/she started to get mad, then she did.He/she pulled a gun,or smasned the window with something, dove in and took over.A jealous girlfriend or boyfriend,or unknown nut job who wanted her,but she Knew them.My thought on this is Not a gun,(there are too many stupid people, for that.)but a SPRAY with a "Skunk"odor, mixed with a RED DYE,that ONLY the police have the cleaner for.It must be small, easy to conseal with an explosive quality'compressed air?' perhaps. A "Ring" that can be worn, than hit and exploded,a belt buckle, neckless, jewelry etc. Mark the guy/girl and make them STINK.

I think the husband did it. Perhaps he murdered her the night before and the person in the SUV was a "friend" who helped him dispose of the body the next day. That is why he was available for a call in the morning. Just a guess - he just does not look that distraught to me.

@ApacheRosePea00 - Nope, Davidaja meant Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner, played by Thomas Gibson on the show Criminal Minds. The characters are part of the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit. Definitely wasn't referring to the 80's movie Turner and Hooch with Tom Hanks.

On topic, I hope they find her alive, although historically unlikely in these cases.

People need to pay attention to their surroundings. Especially women. We are all too busy talking on a cell phone debating whether to go to Starbucks for a coffee rather than pay attention. This goes for everyone not just the missing girl. I can just picture her staring out of the window trying to signal to someone she is in trouble and everyone is just in their own world going about their day and not giving two craps about yours. Sad, we've become so isolated and oblivious, we are easy prey to the kind of monsters that do this kind of heinous thing.

If it's not the husband and turns up that it's yet another freak sex offender that's been let out of jail; it's time to start taking judges off the bench if they let him out. How many people are going to be sexually molested and killed by repeat offenders. THERE'S NO CURE OR TREATMENT. This is why they should execute them the first time they are caught.

The facts say this is a case for Captain Obvious. Her husband last sees her in the apartment before leaving for work; work is five minutes from the apartment. The phone is found in a field. Her bank card was used at a convenience ATM a mile and a half from where the phone was found. Her SUV was found a half mile from where her bank card was used. The SUV is damaged and appears to have been searched through.

When I see the line "the husband is not a suspect at this time", I think one of two things: either this is the most Mickey Mouse missing persons investigation I've ever seen or the husband is at the top of the list and they're putting something out there to draw him into making mistakes. If you look at the time and distance involved here, logic says your suspect is within a very small circle of people. If it's not the husband, it's certainly someone tied to the husband or something the husband got himself mixed up in. What I see here is a crime scene staged, in a very amateurish manner, to look like a strong-arm robbery and car-jacking. Unfortunately, I do not see this young woman being found alive in captivity by responders.

Why are people so quick to blame the Husband? Maybe she got involved with the wrong people and it caught up with her. Or maybe you people see a pretty face and think shes an angel and no way could she have ever done anything wrong or got mixed up in some bad things. SMH

I agree to, just google her name for up to date information, MSN is not covering this story well. If you do look at everything it points to a staged crime scene, the broken glass in the field the apron in the field the tire tracks were the phone was found. It may not have been him who actually did this but im sure he was looking out the window as soon as that door shut. Think about it they went to two gas stations in a 8 minute period and then in that 8 minute period the husband called the cops to set up an alibi. In my OPINION the husband is involved someway, Ill just leave it at that..

The most dangerous person for a woman to be around is a person who "loves" her. Statistically a woman is much more likely to be assaulted or killed by a man she was involved with than a stranger off the street (3 to 1?). I don't know if that is what happened here but the boyfriend/husband is the first person cops will investigate when a woman goes missing.

Didn't anyone read the original story?A gas station attendant saw her in the passenger side and a male driving the SUV she had taken that morning.Sounds to me that she took off with this guy or he forced her into the vehicle that morning. Her ATM was use a couple times too. What about the video of who used it? All banks must provide a video of each transaction right?Or was the guy driving actually her husband?Did he murder her,put her body somewhere that will never be found?Think about it.If this guy got out and put gas in the vehicle wouldn't that have giving her a chance to run out and seek help if she was abducted by a stranger?Right now I have a feeling that her husband did this and reported it to police afterwards. That's just a theory. We'll have to hope the investigators find her.

That would be good, but let's see her job called her house when she did not show up for work. How long did they wait to call. I don't know maybe 10-15 mintues, and who answered the phone when her work called to see where she was, oh I don't know maybe her boyfriend. Who do you think answered the phone her husband so I doubt seriously he was with her when she came up missing.

Maybe he killed her the night before so he was home for the call. He was the only one who claims he saw her that morning.

I'm pretty sure the gas attendant would be able to tell the police in a line up if the male driver was the husband or not.

One point where I think I may have a somewhat different opinion is where you mention the male driver, provided the attendant's memory is accurate. My background and training tell me that if, in fact, the attendant's memory is accurate, the only way she would remain in the vehicle with this unidentified man is if she knew him. If this were a strong-arm, the minute the attacker takes control of the vehicle is crime scene #1; every subsequent stop, such as a gas station or ATM, is another crime scene. At some point there will be a final crime scene, and it will be murder. Time is the abductor's enemy because more time between abducting the victim and disposing of the victim means a greater liklihood of getting caught.

I've trained for over 10 years in hand-to-hand combat, street combat, and urban combat, and can say that complying with an abductor or hostage-taker is a fatal mistake in almost all cases. In plain English, if you are conscious, you fight like a f*ck at crime scene #1 because once you comply and find yourself at crime scene #2, your odds of survival just fell off a cliff. The only time you comply is if you are rendered unconscious by whatever means and wake up at crime scene #2. Why? You don't know where you are and need to get your bearings. You don't know if you've been taken to an area where people ignore a person crying out for help because they don't "stick their noses in other people's sh!t". You need to buy time to notice the abductor's habits. Does he chain-smoke, drink or use drugs? Does he keep some type of schedule? Predictable behavior or habits = advantage victim. It's "comply to buy"; you comply for the sole purpose of buying time to either formulate an escape or leave a trail for responders through using whatever the abductor does not even realize he's giving you.

Ron, you can't run when you are already dead. She could have been propped up in the seat by the seat belts and the husband just made the two stops for small amounts of fuel just hoping a security camera would see her in the vehicle so police could assume that she left the house alive. I don't know where all you people come from that jump up and defend the husband so quickly. Statistically he is the prime suspect.

Well, the police arrested a neighbor, so I think Rodentwarrior was right in that she wouldn't have stayed in the car unless it was with someone familar. If the guy is guilty, I hope they skin him alive and toss him on a garbage pile for the dogs to eat.

This girl looks like me when I was her age its its amazing I hope shes still alive and they find her soon but chances are slim this pig made 3 withdraws from different gas stations and he bought some gas and one of the gas station workers remembers seeing him and they have videos in gas stations and they found her cell phone hopefully they have enough information to go on, no one is safe even if they are getting in their car and drive five minutes awayto work, women need to start arming themselves even if its just pepper spray or learn self defense, we are so busy trying to live that these sick animals lurk around waiting for their next victim. I just hope the boyfriend was not involved in some way.

This world has been and becoming more dangerous all the time. For any woman to get in her vehicle to go to work and something terrible happens on the way is horrid ! Someone must have been stalking her and noticed her routine. Ever since this was made public it has been on my mind. I feel horrible for her husband, mother and rest of her family. Just cannot imagine what they are going through. My prays go out to them and I pray the detectives locate some clues to help with this case.
