Subscribe to RSSWIXOM, Mich. -- Police are teaming up to track down a suspect in 16 shootings near the Interstate 96 corridor outside of Detroit, NBC station WDIV reported.
A newly formed task force met for more than three hours behind closed doors Friday evening to pore over dozens of tips that could lead to a suspect, WDIV reported.
"Know that we are coming for you," Wixom Public Safety Director Clarence Goodlein told WDIV. "It's only a matter of time. We're coming for you."
Shootings in the past week were reported on roads in Wixom, Commerce Township, Lyon Township, Howell and Webberville, in western Oakland County and Ingham County, WDIV reported.
In many cases, drivers reported seeing a gunman traveling toward them in the opposite direction, firing shots at their vehicle, the station reported. No one has been injured, but in a few cases bullets have come very close to drivers, WDIV said.
Some shootings occurred in daylight, others at night, WDIV reported.

Two drivers of vehicles that were struck told WDIV they had no idea what hit them.
"The shot went right through the side of my car," Aaron Mason told WDIV on Thursday, when five vehicles were hit. "Through this side of my car and right into my driver's seat,” he pointed out. “ I'm just lucky I didn't get shot," he said. "
“The parents are scared,” Raymond Bufford of Wixom told WDIV. “Someone has to put a stop to it."
Some residents told WDIV they were avoiding Wixom Road, where most of the shootings took place. At least one shooting was on I-96.

I know Wixom Rd . . its less than 10 mi from downtown Detroit, certainly part of the Detroit Metropolitan area and very urban.

The places where these shootings have occurred are not even in the same county as Detroit. These are the extreme outskirts of the Detroit suburbs, middle to upper middle class communities. Not the kinds of places where people are accustomed to gunshots.

Very large number of gun-loving, KKK-affiliated, ultra-conservative people in this part of Michigan and other rural areas of Michigan. They even had a young kid in a small town who was open-carrying a bunch of guns and refused to follow police orders. Then the whole town came out wearing machine guns and leather. Michigan is more regressive and dangerous than you'd think. It's not just inner city decay, it's rural racists and those who worship guns.
That should be western Oakland and LIVINGSTON counties; Ingham county is substantially further west, and home to the state capitol in Lansing.
Wixon isn't 10 min from downtown Detroit, even by helicopter. The area is equidistant between Detroit, Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Flint. It is farmland that is now seeing its first development, in an area where folks identify themselves as being from their local small town, and not as Detroiters. Very republican and mostly rural, where one can easily find themselves on dusty country roads miles from the nearest stoplight. (I used to live in Farmington Hills, which is the next town over from Wixom, and worked on a number of homes in that area....)
This whole thing sucks, but it just isn't accurate to cast this as a Detroit / Obama / Biden story.

As a long time SE Michigan resident, I can say either your memory is failing or your motive is political spin.
They released a police sketch and the suspect is a young, white skin head. Probably from the Walled Lake area, if he's local. I'm not surprised HandsOffMyMedicare lived near Wixom Rd. More than a few white racist rednecks with guns live around there (looking a lot like your avatar). Walled Lake Western High School is upper middle class (the rich white kids have the better drugs). This is staunch Republican territory. Now we have white on white violence complete with drive-bys?
The shooting locations are in a specific range along I-96 west of I-275. This area is definitely NOT Detroit at all. The 12 Oaks Mall is up in the area where the shootings. One of the first upscale suburban malls Taubman built in south east Michigan (1977) to accommodate the influx of the wealthy upper middle class to suburbs.
Anyway, what HandsOffMyMedicare is posting is obviously politically motivated and should not be taken as accurate.

Wixom isn't farmland, there's a GM Plant there. It is a ways from the city of Detroit, about 30 to 45 minutes. It's till considered Greater Detroit, like most of the area. Howell, mentioned in the story IS mostly farmland and is not considered in the Detroit area. This wacko though, won't be from the city - the violence there stays there for the most part. He'll be some moron from the suburbs or the sticks.

There are a couple of auto plants there, and the HUGE unused Ford Wixom assembly, but there are auto plants EVERYWHERE around here.
All these areas are rural and we may call them part of the metro Detroit area, but certainly not Detroit.
I travel all these roads, and am considering a bullet proof windshield.

Either way, they need to be stopped, before they shoot one driver and cause a Major accident that could also kill other motorists. What if they hit a truck driver, and the truck takes out a school bus? Why do some people have to hate other people so bad to do this?
On Saturday, the Ingham County Sheriff’s Department said a motorist now is reporting that her vehicle was shot at while she was driving on M-52 near Bell Oak Road near Williamston about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release. - That was from the Lansing State Journal. The only description they have of the shooter is that he is a dark-haired male so you know where to stick that skin-head nonsense. It's not only white people who are racist.

It appears from this article that they have multiple suspects as the auto described here is a black sedan.
To ThinkVoice: BS. No GM plant in Wixom, ever. It was home to Ford Wixom Assembly Plant, where I personally watched Lincolns roll off the line several years ago. Ford Wixom has been decommissioned, mothballed and is awaiting final demolition. The Ford oval emblems have been removed, but it was a Ford plant, and the area around the plant was rural until about 20 years ago, but it is still far from urban.
BTW, I have to drive past some of the places where these shootings occurred later this afternoon, I'm taking a kid back to MSU. I think it's still safer by freeway than by Grand River Avenue. One of the shootings took place four miles from my home, and it was only two miles from the apple orchard/farm where the Romney/Ryan rally was held a few weeks ago.

Sounds like a gang thing to me. I used to live in a gang-dominated area in Albuquerque. A popular favorite was for gang members to drive with their lights off, and then open fire on the first car that helpfully flashed their lights at them.

A gang thing in the semi-rural towns between Detroit and Lansing? The article mentioned Webberville -- a village of 1272 people that is just a few miles down I-96 from MSU in East Lansing. It also mentioned Howell, a town of less than 10,000 that is just a few miles closer to Detroit on I-96. Howell is best known for its canteloupe farms and the annual canteloupe festival every August, which draws thousands of tourists.

HandsOff-You definately did not live on Wixom..it is nowhere near Detroit. I wouldn't even consider it suburbs. The scary part to me is..I live in this area..and I think I may have seen this car before. Black car with racing stripes and blue tinted headlights? For some reason I swear I have seen this. If it is what I am thinking it is a dodge stratus 2001-2006 or dodge stealth.

My father used to be a police officer in Howell. That area is nothing but farm country. Not even close to being urban.

I grew up in the Hartland, Howell, Brighton area in the 50's when it was a rural farming area. Today it is almost all urban. It started the big time transfer to urban from rural in the period between 1956 and 1961. In the for years I was gone most of the woods and fields were transferred to housing tracks. All the areas I used to hunt. Main reason I moved.There are hardly any farms left between Hartland, Howell and Brighton anymore.
To far from Detroit, hardly, back in the 50's Detroit used to dump their victims in the remotes areas of these towns.
There should be an automatic death sentence for drive by shooters whether they murder or hurt anyone. We need to get them out of the gene pool. Where they can not hurt any ever, in or out of prison.
Michigan receives 92% of the tax dollars that we send to Washington. Iowa receives 110%, and South Dakota receives a whopping bonus of 153%.

Is this some rich boy, in a fancy expensive car, who is shooting for fun and scaring people for sport? Is this guy part of a gang with some unusual initiation rituals? There is very little psychoanalysis of communities and cultures...that helps investigators understand how people in some communities behave differently when in stress, angry or have a break down. In some countries and cultures men in stress drink a lot, talk a lot or get depressed and want to kill themselves. In others they get angry, controlling, domineering and sometimes either aggressive towards people they are close to or related to...or towards strangers. This cultural knowledge in psychology and clinical work is important...but we have few such people outside California or America's big cities. In fact, even in Cal, we have few. Very little is understood in terms of acculturation or assimilation and its impact on psycology and behaviors.

The shooter or shooters are TRAVELLING IN A CAR. They COULD, POSSBILY, EASILY be coming from Detroit.

For the record, Wixom is not Detroit. Wixom is a small, quiet, family community over thirty miles northwest of Detroit. Filled with good schools and a strong sense of community, things like this are not supposed to happen in Wixom.
