Subscribe to RSSInvestigators say the woman who claimed she was the victim of a violent racially-motivated attack fabricated the claims and actually set herself on fire. Paige Brown reports.
The Louisiana woman who told police that she was set on fire by three men and that her car had racial slurs smeared on it did the heinous actions she described herself, authorities now believe.
Sharmeka Moffitt, 20, told police she parked her car by a walking trail in Civitan Park in Winnsboro, La., on Sunday evening to go exercise when she was set on fire by three men who she described as wearing white hoodies. She was able to extinguish the flames herself and when police found her car, the letters "KKK" and the N-word had been scrawled across the hood.
But what had the rumblings of a hate crime was all apparently a "self-inflicted situation," police said.
“In less than 24 hours, the state crime lab was able to analyze the evidence found at the scene, including a cigarette lighter, lighter fluid and also the hood of the car that had a paste-like substance spread across it, and it identified [Moffitt’s] fingerprints as well as some female DNA,” Louisiana State Police Capt. Doug Cain told NBC News. “With this evidence, investigators were able to determine that she was alone in the park that night and made up the story.”

Authorities released their findings at a press conference Tuesday evening. The Louisiana State Police, the Winnsboro Police Department, the Franklin Parish Sheriff’s Department and the FBI were all assisting in the investigation.
“This has been a very disturbing case for all involved,” Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb said. “All of the evidence indicates this was a self-inflicted situation.”
Cain said police have not yet spoken with Moffitt, who underwent surgery Tuesday to treat burns covering more than 60 percent of her body on her chest, back, arms and legs. “We certainly hope to speak with her about it, but her health comes first,” Cain said. Moffitt remains in critical condition in the burn unit at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, the Shreveport Times reported.
A few hours after police said Moffitt had lied, nearly 130 residents of the tight-knit Winnsboro community attended a candlelight vigil at Civitan Park Tuesday night to offer prayers and support to Moffitt and her family.
In a statement, Moffitt’s family said, “Our family is devastated to learn the circumstances surrounding our daughter’s injuries. While this was not the resolution we had expected, it is a resolution, and we appreciate the thorough investigation by the local and state police, as well as federal agencies.”

“We are sincerely sorry for any problems this may have caused and wish to express our appreciation for the outpouring of love, prayers and support we have received from friends, acquaintances, church organizations and government officials.”
While Cain said he hasn’t seen anything of this nature in the area before, this isn’t the first time alleged hate crimes have been exposed as hoaxes.
A Nebraska woman who claimed she was the victim of a homophobic hate crime in July was subsequently charged with making false claims to police after they spent three weeks investigating the case and discovered no clues or leads in the case.
The woman, Charlie Rogers, 33, told police three men wearing black ski masks broke into her home during the early morning hours, bound her wrists and ankles with zip ties, beat her and carved anti-gay slurs into her arms and abdomen. Because of inconsistencies in Roger’s various accounts of the attack and conflicting forensic evidence, police arrested Rogers.

A Washington state woman who falsely claimed a stranger had thrown a cup of acid in her face in August 2010 later admitted her injuries were self-inflicted and part of an attempt to kill herself.
28-year-old Bethany Storro was charged with three counts of felony theft for allegedly taking more than $28,000 in donations from people believing she had been assaulted by a stranger. When the acid proved not to be fatal, Storro told a detective that she could at least get plastic surgery on her face.
Police have not yet said whether Moffitt will face criminal charges due to the attack.
Frankin Parish District Attorney Mack Lancaster told NBC News that “there is a distinct possibility that [Moffitt] might at this point be charged, but I have not yet received any investigative reports on the incident,” he said. “We will review those reports just as in all cases and determine what, if any, charges will follow.”

Did I call it!!! Yesterday when there were all the posts about white racists doing this I said I was going to wait til all the evidence was in before passing judgment. I even mentioned....Remember the Tawany Brawley case (Al Sharpton's client)
I actually did call this yesterday, but I was really hoping it wasn't the case. I live in Seattle and a couple years ago a woman said that a woman had walked up to her and said "Hey pretty lady" on the street then threw acid on her face. There were police sketches and everything. It turned out she had used a caustic drain cleaner on her face in a park bathroom, then drove downtown, got out of her car, and started screaming. Mostly I was suspicious because someone happened to light her on fire right next to a water spigot. I don't know what kind of mental illness this woman is suffering from, but it is clear that her problems will require significant professional help. I really feel for her and her family.
This individual is not mentally stable. Hope she receives the proper mental treatment.
I find it interesting how many people are actually expressing sympathy for this woman. If the roles had been reversed and a white woman laid false blame at the feet of three black men there would be absolute choas, and every one reading this knows it.
There wouldn't be any sympathy then, oh no. Nope, everyone would be trashing her as a vile racist, and I sincerely doubt anyone would dare lay claim she had a mental condition.
I'm sure by this time next year this woman will have a book deal and be a guest on The View touting her courage and life struggles growing up in a racially divided climate, or some other nonsense.

My first thought when I read this story this morning was that it was self inflicted.I didnt even bother to read the comment section because I knew that it was just going to turn into a forum of ignorant hate (from all races) .
Personally, the fact that she said there were 3 men wearing white hats/hoods that did this seemed suspect. Im not saying that it couldnt have happened but the level of hate/ insanity it takes to set a random person on fire isnt something you normally see from a group of people. If it was a planned attack on a certain person (like gang retaliation), maybe, but to troll around a park looking for someone...doesnt add up. In my opinion setting someone on fire is more of a solo act (not for a group of 3) and a crime of passion/ anger and unless you have mental issues you wouldnt do it unless you had some sort of history with the victim. So if it was one person with mental issues (and being hugely KKK racist I consider mental issuse) or one person who knew and was angry with the victim, it could happen. But the odds of three crazy people (who are crazy enough to want to set someone on fire) finding like minded ppl, coordinating their outfits, driving out to a park to wait around for a black person to walk by...unlikely
Anyone who would do this to themselves and then try to pass it off as a hate crime has mental issues. Black or white, it doesnt matter, they need help.
I hate how ppl start mocking Al Sharpton or other black leaders about their outrage over a story like this. What if it was true? Bad things happen everyday. When I was a teen I remember a story about a black man being chained to the back of a truk and being dragged to death. He was found in pieces along the road for miles...and that was in the late 90's and it seems like just yesterday. You have to remember that in many cases these leaders have been active in the Civil Rights cause since the beginning. They've seen it all and experienced it all. When they "overreact" about an issue its because they dont want us to go back to the way things were. With all the progress that we've made as a society, they dont want it to be 1 step forward and 2 steps back.
There wasn't such outrage and claims of racism when that white woman threw acid on her face and blamed it on a black person.
The rare event that a black person does something like this, its 20000 times worse than when a white person does it (just like with anything else).
At least this woman's family apologized. You white people who are giddy about this, like it somehow proves that white people aren't racist, and somehow this is a reflection on black people, you should all be ashamed of yourselves.

When I first saw the headline about this "incident" I thought, no, this didn't happen the way the "victim" presented it. It was too involved, too many cliched tropes brought in. It seems the more florid the crime, the more likely it is to be some twisted cry for attention rather than a fact. It cuts all ways. Ashley Todd's backwards "B" during the 2008 campaign was part of the same pattern, just as was the gut-wrenching attempt by Susan Smith to divert blame for her murder of her little boys. The U.S. is the 3rd largest (in terms of population) country in the world. We have a LOT of wackos walking around loose. It's a pity they aren't getting the treatment & care they need to keep from victimizing others in our society. I know we are in a time when many think that the least among us should be tossed into an active volcano, but Christian charity demands a more compassionate response.
When I first read the story I had some doubts and thought why would someone set themselves on fire and suffer so much pain. I felt for her and prayed for her.
The South has made great strides in Race Relations but I realize the rest of the US still thinks we are a bunch of barefoot, uneducated, tobacco chewing, bunch of idiots. Bigots are everywhere in every State black and white.
Most white folks are afraid to say anything because they don't want to offend anyone of any race, or religion. I was taught by my parents and my Church to Love everyone. Because we are all the same on the inside except some carry around a little more hate than others.
I still pray for this young woman and her family and may she get the help she so desperately needs.

What is portrayed in the media isn't an accurate representation of the statistical analysis that shows otherwise and refutes your point Tek. I don't disengage with any conversation but cherry picking media exploits doesn't strengthen your case it weakens it.
Whites don't claim moral high ground but we do commit less interracial crime per capita its reality. Daily around the nation we see crimes against whites by blacks that are on the level of the ones you report on its just the coverage isn't there because the nature of said crimes doesn't reinforce the false ideology of black perpetual victimization.
We're not talking about property crimes here. You can make any statistic work for you. I'm talking about racially based heinous acts such as rape and sexual assault, cannibalism, serial/mass killings, and blaming people for stuff they didn't do because you know the cops will believe you.
Everyone knows that 95% of the victims of so called "black crime" are black, so the DOJ statistics are really meaningless. I can think of one case, the couple in Tennessee a few years back, where black people did something that terrible to whites. And even then THAT SAME MONTH, something similiar happened to a mentally disabled black girl in West Virginia, only she lived to tell about it.

Yes, but they will never be convicted, since they can't be forced to testify against themselves.
Maybe not a hate crime against themselves, but her false report is definitely a hate crime in itself though it will never be treated as such.
I'm not sure about the hate crime aspect of this case, but she has wasted valuable time and resources that may have been used to help true victims of other crimes.
I think she should have to pay for the wages of all investigators involved, lab testing costs, any vehicle/equipment expenses, etc. Is there a way to bill her for being an ignorant fool?
They can be prosecuted for making false statements to the police but it's just a misdemeanor as the only person they hurt is themselves. There's no crime for being a racist (unless you commit a "hate crime" that I know of) and this goes to show that racist comes in all colors. Is BO going to weigh in on this or maybe Jesse or Al? Probably not, it doesn't serve their "cause" to publicly speak about these kinds of things.

I did not see one mention anywhere in the article about either Obama or Romney. How did that get injected into this? All blacks don't support Obama, all whites don't support Romney, all blacks don't hate whites, all whites don't hate blacks. This was a case of a clearly mentally disturbed individual doing something that we may never understand, but there is no reason to assume any sort of political motivation.

Whats truly sad is now a rel victim of a crime will be less believable. The lady either wanted attention or needs help or both. I am grateful for the way her family handled the news and addressed the situation.

Better ways to get attention!This was well thought out (KKK, fire), both used by that hate group when it confronts blacks to scare them. the only other way would have been hanging and a big cross, the cross would have been to hard to set up and big would have been seen and the hanging would have lead to death.

Sadly there will be some who only hear the original report and repeat it as fact. Still others will rationalize that it COULD happen so it's totally believable. And others will not believe the truth and think it's a conspiracy to cover up for the KKK. These are true racists, the ones who can't let go of their hatred of whites.
