The American Federation of Teachers launched a multistate bus tour this weekend, spending the first leg of their trip in the important battleground state of Ohio.
CINCINNATI, Ohio – In the swing states of Ohio and Florida, it’s crunch time for teachers unions, which in the final days of the campaign are getting out the vote for President Barack Obama in droves – even though they disapprove of some of his policies.
"The arguments have been made,” American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten said as she mingled with fellow union members in Cincinnati last weekend and talked up the importance of the election. “This trip is about mobilizing and getting out the vote.”
Weingarten is urging members in both states to donate time to Obama’s reelection campaign by join canvassing and phone banking efforts. The AFT, along with the larger National Education Association (NEA), has organized pro-Obama events across the country for months. With just about two weeks to go until Election Day, Weingarten’s bus tours in Ohio and Florida are an attempt to rally teachers for a final push.
The traditionally strong relationship between teachers unions and Democrats has been strained in recent months. The tensions came to a head last month in Chicago, when union members went on strike, in part over tying teacher evaluations to student test scores. They went up against Obama’s former chief of staff, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. In some cases, unions are even supporting Republicans this election cycle.
For the most part though, the unions are still throwing most of their money and manpower toward the Democrats, who have also supported policies they like – including a bill to hire nearly 300,000 more teachers, which was scuttled by Republicans in Congress. Weingarten and NEA President Dennis Van Roekel have portrayed Obama as someone who genuinely cares about education and Romney as someone who will gut the public system in favor of privatization.
Other teachers agree. “It could be a whole lot worse,” said Wellyn Collins, a retired teacher in Cincinnati, of Obama’s first term. “There are a lot of people that have a lot of enthusiasm for reelecting the president.”
Ohio is a hugely important swing state in the tight race between Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney. No president has won without the state’s 18 electoral votes since 1960.
“This election will be decided in O-H-I-O,” Weingarten said to a group of members just outside of Cincinnati on Friday. “Can we find it in ourselves to volunteer to knock on some doors? Can we find it in ourselves to volunteer to call some people?”

Both national teachers unions, which have a combined 4.5 million members nationwide, have requested that their members donate time to support union-endorsed candidates. Historically, teachers unions have been a large player in politics because of their deep coffers and thousands of members, who can be mobilized for get-out-the-vote efforts.
This year, the Ohio Education Association (OEA), the state affiliate of the NEA, is asking its 124,000 members to spend an hour or two of time calling potential voters, knocking on doors or attending a rally. All 26 offices across the state have phone-banking stations set up.
The union also mails fliers to their members urging them to support all the candidates the OEA has endorsed – and not just at the polls. President Patricia Frost-Brooks says she counts on teachers talking about the election with friends and community members as informal, word-of-mouth campaigning. Frost-Brooks, for example, goes down her Christmas card list, sending out notes explaining why she’s supporting certain candidates.
But neither union mandates any political involvement, and there’s no guarantee all – or even most – of the unions’ members will contribute to the get-out-the-vote efforts.
In Cincinnati, the Ohio Federation of Teachers (OFT) hopes that at minimum, 1 percent of its members will volunteer for a one- to three-hour shift recruiting voters. The union currently has about 5 percent of its members in the area participating in the “Walk, Talk or Pay” program, but Cincinnati leader Tom Frank is hopeful that number will be closer to 10 percent by Election Day.

Yet some union members in the area not only refuse to give their time to Obama, they won’t vote for him either. “We have a very conservative [section] within our union,” Frank said. He said his goal is to persuade this group not to vote for Romney, because, Frank says, the Republican candidate gives too much support to charters and private education.
Many of Frank’s most dedicated volunteers are retired teachers, who have more time to give. The OFT held a summer training session for retirees to prepare them to organize and motivate other volunteers.
Collins, who attended the training session, spends six days a week talking to would-be voters to explain why they should vote for Obama. She says the effort feels worthwhile when she’s able to persuade someone to register who wasn’t planning on voting at all.
A native of Kentucky, which has been a reliable Republican stronghold in the last three presidential elections, Collins often misses home – except during election season. “It’s the one time I really am happy I’m an Ohioan,” she said.

Sorry, teachers should be non-partisan. After all they are supposed to be an example to students (children) and should not influence them politically. The worst part is Union Dues are mandatory and Union Heads can spend the money pretty much how they see fit--irregardless of what members want. It should be illegal for public employee unions to use dues for political campaigns.
Churches should be non-partisan too, but most of them lean Republican. I'm assuming you have a problem with all partisanship, not just partisanship that you don't agree with.
What happened to free speech? When bosses were telling their workers that they'd lose their jobs if Obama won, every bagger on this forum was screaming free speech.
These teachers are not excluded from the political process simply because of their occupation. They are doing this on their own time. There is nothing wrong with this at all.
where did you read anything in that article saying they were influencing ANY students?
Let them go. Let them highlight the issues they themselves are responsible for. Let them associate unions with Obama ... unions with ridiculous demands and who do sub-standard work. Sometimes the best advertising costs absolutely nothing. Ohio has a lot of unions membership but they have many more non-union voters.
They do influence their students. My kids come home and tell me discussions that they are having in school. I don't mind it because I think it is important for children to learn about politics at an early age. They are learning to get all the facts and form their own opinions. Some of my kids want Obama reelected and some want Romney. We have civilized discussions in our house about politics. We even watched the debates together. When an 8 yr old says, "Neither one of them is answering their questions?" and a 13yr old says "Politics is frustrating" that pretty much sums up this election.
We are in Ohio and my house is split 4 = Romney and 3 = Obama.
Churches tend to represent moral values. If liberals had any, churches would support them. Since they don't... NO support. Pretty simple dipsh&t. We don't need nor want teachers instill liberal ideals in our children.
Besides, the teachers unions back liberals because liberals support and encourage the abuse and and fraud within all unions. Only a retard believes unions are not corrupt. It's funny how teachers themselves encourage everyone to get involved, yet won't chip in to help out states that cannot afford to pay their salaries or pensions anymore. Even here in California, Gov Brown is looking to deal aggressively with public pensions and unions.
Keep in mind that welfare topped 1 trillion this year... if we could end that, there is plenty of money to go around for those that WANT to work for a living. Which is not on the liberal agenda.
HATR,
I don't know about Ohio teachers, but I would have to recalibrate my boys almost daily when they came home from elementary and middle school down here in Florida. The oldest is now in high school and doesn't need it as much but my middle school youngster still comes home and tells me the BS he hears from his teachers. What is funny is that I have taught them to be wary of political opinions of their teachers and even from a young age, 8 or 9 if I recall, they were always able to see right through that brain washing jazz....I remember being proud of them for coming to their own conclusions about what their teachers were telling them. And they always have had independent thoughts and do not rely on their elders for the truth...they hunted the truth for themselves....brings a tear to me just thinking of it now....kidding of course.
Point being; the children in Florida are very much subjected to political brainwashing by school officials. It is just done in a slimy quiet back door way down here....like everything political....lol.
The percentage of government union employees to a state's population is amazing...yes, Ohio has a high number of private sector union workers. And that is only part of it. My state has a population of about 3.2 to 3.3 million people (including children)....we have about 200,000 state and municipal union employees.
That is a monstrously large voting bloc...without even thinking about private sector folks.
And sorry to disagree with an above post...but I'll guarantee one can find political influence by school teachers in any school one chooses to look into...right thru to college. Four years ago my daughter's campus looked like Obama Campaign Headquarters. And after that election, there were videos popping up on YouTube day by day of elementary school teachers leading their students in songs they wrote and scripted in praise of the nation's divine new 'leader'. A heck of a way to spend taxpayer funded classroom activities ! Forcing the students to chant praises to a politician.
Unions are nothing more that LEGAL Organized Crime Syndicates that sell themselves to the highest bidder. In Maryland, O'Malley bribed Unions by taking money from ALL STATE EMPLOYEES pay and giving that money directly to the Unions - IN RETURN, the Unions gave money to and supported O'Malley's election. O'Malley also "GUARANTEED" them no less than 4 million dollars a year in money he stole from State Employees. If and when State Employees get a raise, the Union gets the same percentage increase. State Employees get a 2% raise - the MANDATORY UNION deduction from paychecks increases 2%. There is no room for Politics in the Classrooms. If the teacher's would give the same energy to teaching that they give to Politics, the U.S. Educational System would be 100% better than it is today. Teacher's support O'Bama because he supports keeping bad and sub-standard teachers in their jobs rather that on the Unemployment Line where they belong.
I hope these Teacher's are on a Leave Without Pay Status when they are riding in this Million Dollar Bus that belongs to the Teacher's Union. If Teacher's can buy this Bus and ride around instead of doing their jobs in the classroom (paid by Tax Dollars), they need a Pay Cut.
If the teachers are doing this on their own time there is nothing wrong with it, but if they are pushing their political views in the class room they should be fired.
troy, using your experience still doesn't prove any influencing by the teachers in the article.
Actually Bman- churches represent ignorance and belief in something that cannot be proven.
Do you believe in Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny too?
There is a negative correlation between education and a belief in god. The higher the level of education the lower the belief in god.
Think about it !!
If obama is re-elected or if romney is elected either of them should make it against the law for public employees to belong to a union. They work for john q public and are not playing by the same rules as private employees. If anyone is earning a living working for any government and receiving their income from tax dollars they should not be involved in a union. I also believe that any utility or supplier whose products is vital to the citizens of The United States of America I.E. electricy, water, gas, fuel, oil, all should be under the control of the federal government in the form of price controls. These companies should not be allowed to sell their products or services to anyone until all of America's citizens are taken care of first and at the lowest cost available, when these companies do this it is in my opinion treason, and they should be prosecuted and imprisoned. Most government contacts put a limit of 20% profit on their work, this is in my opinion is way to much when it comes to public utilities and oil. If I am hearing it right, groceries operate on a mere 2-3% profit and I do not have a problem with that, besides I do not believe it is at their level that causes the price of food to go up.
It seems that Democrats are the party of abortion, bullying/rediculing christians and enslaving the poor/uneducated to welfare while the Democratic elite tell us to tighten our belts and give till it hurts and they fly off for their 3rd vacation in a year. I really love that part where you forgo your wedding presents and send the money to Obama instead...yeah we should support the God less in our country.
Mom2Five,
Even young children know when they are being force fed a bologna sandwich! Way to go to them! Darn independent thinking just gets in the way at such a young age huh?...lol.
Hatr,
I know. I am a bit off on a tangent based on where the discussion is headed. My point that teachers in the classroom do influence the children politically, or attempt to anyway, is true in almost every school. I will snuff it out daily. We will talk about what happens in the class room and during their breaks with our children every single day until they are 18 and legally responsible for their future. I do not like the thought of my kids being politically brainwashed. Was just making a point based on a comment above and of course, as you say, totally off on a tangent.
Ed,
You are wrong on so many levels.
I get your point...it is wrong...but I get it.
Beliefs, like the people that have them, vary to such a wide degree that to group any together as believers/ignorant, or intelligent/athiest, is itself one of the most ignorant statements I can ever think of. Stereotyping is dangerous my friend. And it blinds you as well.
I've met some pretty dumb athiests (i am assuming you are relating intelligence with this given your attack against the cherished Christian, Jewish and Muslim God) and I've met some pretty smart Christians. I've met some people that are in between and some that are none of the above.
Don't be ignorant, it makes you blind. (hope I don't get banned again for saying ignorant...lol)
So the libs here, masters of deflection, claim a union representing government paid teachers is somehow the same as private churches. You cannot debate stupidity.
Teachers have a right to their opinion and the right to assemble and the right to vote just like anybody else. They're private American citizens just like you and me.
Of course teachers are supporting Democrats and President Obama. Teachers are intelligent, educated people, you would expect that they would use their minds and make the best choice.
What would really be news would be if they came out to support a Republican. Of course if they did that, there would be a question of their mental competency.
I am an educator, first as a substitute and now as an adjunct professor who is also in a doctoral program. Forced to pay union dues to a union that did absolutely nothing for substitutes and yet spent our union dues for partisan politics. I try very hard to be non-biased in the classroom. But in all of the classes I have taken from high school through the phd program most of my teachers/professors attempted to influence students with their personal politics. Maybe not in word or in deed, but in tone, voice inflections, facial expressions, sarcasm, rolling the eyes, raised eyebrows, tight lips, and in a number of other non-verbal methods indicating their dislike for a candidate, their policy, or a student's conservative views. It isn't difficult to determine a professor hates the Republican party when they invite leftist guest speakers into their classroom whose presentation is a running commentary on the evils of the Republican party. It isn't difficult to figure out when the professor elaborates on Nixon's failed Vietnamization program but neglects the fact that Kennedy first sent ground troops to Vietnam. It isn't difficult to understand the politics of a teacher who ridicules a student for wearing a tshirt with a conservative expression on it. Aside from whether it's legal or not, ridiculing a student for any reason is flat wrong. Unions should be optional.
Actiually Troy, you're comparing apples to oranges. I never said there weren't smart eneducated people, or there aren't stupid educated people. Smart vs stupid vis a vis educated vs uneducated.
Uneducated people are much more likely to believe what they're told, educated people are more likely to observe and do research.
Do you believe the Earth was created 4000 years ago, do you believe anyone who believes the Earth was created 4000 years ago should be an elected representative?
Do you believe that a person who believes in ritualistic cannibalism ( holy communion) is a sane, logical, reasoning person?
Give me logic and reason any day of the week
Thank you CreekProf. Here you go guys. From the very mouth of an educator! This is exactly what i mean that the children are brainwashed daily in a slimy back door manner.
Also, teachers indeed have every right to their own political views. PUBLIC teachers, however, should be held to this; They should, in all circumstances, keep their political views OUT OF THE CLASSROOM. It is not their job to brainwash children, it is their job to TEACH children.
Thanks again for the raw truth Prof!
dirp...
Once again with the twaddle you spew about the intelligence of folks who vote the same way you do...and since the topic is "schools" and "education"...for years we have been pelted with stories from the media telling us how so many US cities have the highest dropout rates and produce far too many poorly educated and unemployed people. Those very same areas also produce the highest voting percentages for Democrat politicians, as the results will surely show after the November elections. So keep telling us how "intelligent" and "educated" your fellow voters are...in your opinion.
Ed,
We could argue this point and never get anywhere. I did not state my beliefs in anyway above.
I do urge you, however, to reconsider your narrow beliefs of religion vs intelligence. Not all Christians believe the earth was created 4000 years ago, (I believe the right number of years is 6000 for those that do) and not all Christians believe people and dinosaurs walked around and lived in harmony together. Most intelligent Christians acknowledge that the bible is much more philosophy than science. It makes sense since, oh I dunno, IT WAS WRITTEN BEFORE THE WORD SCIENCE EVEN EXISTED.
This discussion is for another article I'm sure and way off on a tangent but I am not being snarky when I say be careful with stereotypes.
If you would like an example of a highly intelligent Christian philosophical viewpoint read some Lee Strobel or if inclined search out some others.
At any rate, it is unwise to assume intelligence based on religious beliefs. I learned this through my own mistake of doing the very same thing.
I'm kind of laughing out loud right now though. Don't know why I bit on your statement. It is so common a belief it is almost cliché.
Ed,
I need to add that intelligent people will educate themselves so that we understand one another. I see where misunderstand your view. However, I add that intelligent people are driven by an insatiable desire to seek the truth and through that desire will almost always be or become educated.
If one has ever been on a college campus one knows that you indeed educate yourself. The professors provide guidance, but if you don't seek knowledge on your own by the time you are in college, you will fail almost every subject....just a thought.
I am sure glad you didn't bring up that the bible is the oldest book in the world. that way ,I don't have to bring up that the early christians burned the total sum of mans knowledge when Theodosious )sic) burned down the Alexandria Library in 256 AD
Let us hope those teachers are telling those kids, when they are old enough that rape is rape, and there is nothing legitimate about it, and no, it is never the will of God.
I hope Akin and Mourdoch are not a reflection on any teacher.
I have teacher friends who are republicans and they complain constantly that their union tells them to vote democrat....they don't HAVE to of coarse because there is no way of them knowing who their teachers vote but they try to drill it in them that republicans are "bad".
Ed,
prove evolution for me. prove gravity. prove the big bang. after you prove all of these THEORIES for me, then we'll discuss founded vs. unfounded ideas, and hell, we'll discuss science vs. religion too. Thank you and goodnight, douche bag.
lol....Nice try at baiting me Ed but I'm not biting.
Now you are assuming that I believe the bible is the oldest book in the world? Are you assuming I am a Christian as well? Assumtion is alot like stereotyping...you can do it to a degree but in the end it is dangerous too.
Just a point; Christians, like tons of other groups of people, have done much worse than burn libraries down while driven blindly by their belief system. The Nazis come to mind... The Romans in Christian and pre-Christian times comes to mind...The Spartans, muslims, Jews, Soviet Russians (Pre-WW2), Colonial Americans, I'm mixing religion and national identity I know but....
Back to my point..oh wait, already made it....lol. Oh well, another point then....always keep an open mind. As a species, we have only begun to grasp the true nature of reality....plus, full circle on our tit for tat battle, I'll take our mix of uneducated people and educated people any day..it takes all kinds.
Another thought; throughout history it has always been intelligent, highly educated people who bring our world closer and closer to utter and total destruction....on that basis alone, I fell a hell of alot more comfortable in a world of uneducated people.
Conserned Bystander, lets not get to carried away...I'd say humans as a whole have at least partial understanding of gravity and the nature of the universe. I'm still waiting for the whole creation/evolution thing to work itself out either way though. That is what I mean about keeping an open mind....we know so very little.
Also, I am still laughing at how we got onto this topic. Suppose I am just drawn to it as it seems you all are.
Apologies "Concerned Bystander" and not "Conserned"...typing alittle fast there..lol.
Also, what the h-e double l is frank talking about....did I miss something?
Concerned, I would explain Popper's philosophy of scientific falsification to you and what "theory" actually means in science, but I'm sure you wouldn't understand. I'm sure it's far out of the range of your capabilities.
Not so much..........But nice name droppage. I think you made yourself feel very smart there, whilst you had wikipedia open on a seperate tab. You sure impressed me anyways.
Cappy-- its a moral issue. the Dumbocrat hate everything that calls itself good. They are baby killers, anti-family and traditional marriage, they support welfare and every other godless thing. Read Roman 1.
That's why most people of Faith support Republican candidates.
Ed,
You disappoint me deeply. I thought I was going to get deep into a battle of wits but then you just get drawn into an unproductive insult brawl with Concerned Bystander. I was looking forward to bashing it out on an intelligent and "educated" battlefield but alas, you respond with burning libraries, blow me off and decend into a fruitless enterprise with Concerned Bystander. I'd pout if I could but am incapable.
Wish Chad were around. That is one debatable SOB.
WTH is droppage or should I ask CB? Are you just trying to insult without getting banned?...lol.
I wonder how many million + dollar buses the Union has to travel around the country pumping up Obama voters.
Your Union dues at work.
Well Howdy, remember that teacher in PA who yelled at a student for wearing a Pro-Romney shirt to school. So much for non-partisan.
Ok so where do the unions get the money. From the teachers. Where do the teachers get the money. From our taxes......this is tax payer dollars....but hey obama is above the law remember.
if a company sells a product to an individual who happens to work for the government then that's our tax payer dollars too. do you want to try to tell them what they can and can't do with that money? your point was a dumb one bob.
Actually you are dumb not to see the difference. But that is what obama is hoping for...you lose.
Bob Im not sure how low your education level is but when you work for a pay to perform a Job. That pay belongs to you after that Job is complete, Just sayin!!!
bob, not listening to your teachers didn't hurt you at all. you would have needed common sense for any of it to have meant anything.
What can you say the Union is just trying to protect its self..... After all what other organization do you know that can extort money legally..... PUBLIC SERVANTS DO NOT BELONG IN UNIONS.....
Do you know WHY most teachers are liberal? It's because they are not into teaching for the money, but rather for the love of the craft, something that a conservative would NEVER do. Teachers need unions to protect themselves from the idiots who think that teaching isn't that hard and the politicians that they know best when it comes to educating our children.
I'm not a teacher myself, but I come from a long line of teachers in my family ( 4 generations).I'd love to see some CEO or politician deal with a room of 35 7year olds. I'd give them about an hour before they ran out of the room screaming and pulling their hair out.
Then why are they always asking for more money when the parents of the children they are teaching can't afford a pay raise?
Because they DESERVE it, tlb. Would you go into a profession that requires 5 years of college that pays a poverty wage? the reason some kids don't do well in school is because their parents don't take responsibility for their children. Before one blames the teacher for their child's failings, they need to ask themselves a couple of questions
1. Do I read to my child every night?
2. Do I make sure my child does their homework every night? Do I let my kid play video games for hours on end.
Remember, teachers only have your kids for about 6 hours a day, 5 days a week.
When was the last time you took your kid to a museum?
Quit blaming the teachers and take a little personal responsibility
Ed - really they do it because they love the craft...strikes for more pay are a regular part of our landscape and please don't forget about the countless bonds and levies put out to get more money for salaries and other items for education
Yes Kirk, they REALLY do it because of the love of the craft. I love my job too, but I expect to make a living wage. Do you?
How much do you think a starting teacher makes? I can tell you it's not in the six figures, more like the low middle five figures. A starting teacher can't even support a family without the help of a spouse.
And this is after five years of a higher education.
Ed...
But those very same teachers filled out the entire job application in their own hand and by their own free will. Why get trained to do the job and then take the job...and later complain about the paycheck ?
Truthfully Tony, I hate to admit it, but most starting teachers are idealists. They believe they can really make a difference in the world. When I was going to college, I didn't have the heart to tell them that they would be the most disrespected members of our society, once they started their careers. ya see, everyone thinks they can teach because teachers make it look oh so easy.Everyone has an opinion on how to make our schools better, but are so ignorant to what teaching entails. Teaching is by far, the most important profession not only here in the US, but everywhere. But all anyone hears is that it's "the teachers fault". Well Tony, it's actually the parent's fault. Ya see, parents don't take personal responsibility for their child's education. I love it when I hear some whiny parent complain about their kid not being able to read when they graduated from high school. My question would be: How long have you known your kid couldn't read? Did you ever read to your kid? Did you sit down with your kid and help him/her with their reading? Did you limit their video game/ television time?
Quit blaming teachers for your failings as a parent.
Teachers get burned out: you would to if you were trying to teach 42 kids at a time. You would to if you're using books that are 10 to 15 years old. You would to if there weren't enough pencils and paper for your students to do their work. teachers don't realize the logistics of teaching until they get into the profession.
Speak to which you know, Tony. Do some research before you open your mouth.
Ed...
Why try to engage in conversation and then call me ignorant ??? For what...what is incorrect about my single sentence ??? Or is this question "ignorant" also.
And for your information...I blame "parents" or the lack of same...and "voters" for 98% of this country's problems. Maybe 99%.
My son has a successful construction business and my daughter graduated from one of the best colleges in my state and has a great career. Who are you to question how I raised my children when you know zero about me or my kids ? And I was taught...probably by MY teachers and MY parents...that when you try to talk knowledgeably about something you know nothing about, you can end up looking pretty "ignorant" without anyone else's help.
Actually Tony, I don't see where I used the word "ignorant" in my post that was directed at you.
Secondly, I was explaining how and why teachers get into the profession unknowingly, thinking they're going to make a difference. I don't see where I was making disparaging remarks on how you raised your kids.
I could, however, see how you could take my comments wrong about "Quit blaming teachers for your failings as a parent" My apologies, I didn't mean your kids, personally.
Tony,
That seems to be a pattern with Ed. I was in it tit for tat with him on religion vs intelligence in comment 1 section but eventually he dropped from his educated soap box to whatever the heck happened and just decended into an insult brawl. He seems to move on once he knows he's in for a real fight so just stick to your guns and religion and he will hop along.
Where are you Ed? Stereotyping again? Still thinking all teachers are golden and parents are bad? I thought you'd understand by now that people can't be lumped into these gigantic general groups. Have him explain to you his opinion stating how ALL educated people don't believe in God and ALL uneducated people just believe what they are told tony...it's almost a laughable viewpoint if he didn't truly believe it. Round and round we went but I suppose he had enough and moved on. Still looking for him to re-engage but if I had to guess he went to more favorable territory like a pro-Obama article or something.
I was really having fun debating with you Ed. Sincerly I was. Allz I wanted was for you to at least admit that wide sweeping statements grouping people together is somewhat counter productive and assuming...come on. I'm reading your posts. I know you are a smart guy. You have to realize that while you can generalize to a degree about group norms to do so and believe it applies wholesale is way way wrong. You need to use terms like "most teachers I've met" and "some parents are bad". Otherwise we all take insult when you don't necessarily mean "all" of us are one thing or another.
Tony -268769
Actually Tony your question was kinda sarcastic!!!!! Don't ya think. Ed was very thoughtful in making an attempt to explain rather than biting your head off. Maybe you just felt ignorant?
There is no law that teachers should be non-partisan, they should not influence them politically in class, but there right to campaign for whom they choose is a right. Every citizen, no matter who they are have the right to vote, and support the candidate of their choice. We here in Wisconsin, got hit hard when Walker took our union rights away. Wisconsin and all the other "Tea Party Governor"s, were part of the plan to take away middle class jobs and we lost many, many great teachers and although there are good and not good union representatives, the good lost their jobs right along with the greedy ones. Wisconsin is a ghost state, people here walk around and try to fight back, but they cannot fight back against the Koch Brothers, and the rich. Ryan is one of the biggest contributors to his State going down the tubes. He did nothing to stop GM from closing. He has lied all the way through his "want to be" vice president campaign. Romney and Ryan will never know the pain of not being able to spend $10.00 to help their candidate because it would not be a pizza night out for them, it would be a gallon of milk, a dozen apples, a dozen eggs, and a pound of hamburger. Which would be most of their next couple of meals. They have no idea what it is like to be middle class and our poor is something they would like to send to China to work for peanuts, so they could benefit like Romney does with BAIN, and why does not Romney insist on taking his millions out of Bain and Freeport, and not letting it go to China? Why, because he might lose a little, or even worse for him, he may have invest his money in the country he wants to be President of. The people of our country have been the losers since 911, and why can't Obama have 4 more years? Oh that's right carefully watch the debate in Florida last week, Obama can't have 4 years, but Romney clearly states he needs 8-10 to fix our country. What a joke. Go Obama, Go middle Class, Go teachers, Go the 99 percent, the 47%, and vote. Vote 4 more years for the man who has kept us from being attacked here at home for 4 years, or go with the man that needs 8-10 years to balance a budget, start with a war with China, and bring back Russia as our biggest enemy. Jeesh, Listen to what Romney is saying, and how he says something, it hurts him in the polls, then he very slyly smiles and changes his opinion on how he will run a country. He makes me feel like a punching bag.
Jeannie,
Please explain how paying each teacher even more money is going to create more jobs for teachers? I as an individual worker cannot hold my employer hostage for everything that you are talking about. They pay what they pay towards health care. If we do not make a profit we do not get matching dollars towards a 401k. Most people who have a job, all they can ask for is a raise. Not an increase in every single benefit they may or may not receive. If your company which would be the state of Wisconsin does not have the money, then they do not have the money. Who pays most of the taxes in your state? The middle class does, so would not a tax increase in your state be just that, another attack against the middle class?
Besides they did not take all of your union rights away. You still have the right to negotiate your pay.
We as consumers caused all of those jobs to go overseas, until we understand that things will never change.
Think about where you buy and what you buy.
President Obama will take another 10 years to balance the budget. Look it up, we will add at least another 10 trillion dollars to our deficit before we have a balanced budget.
If Romney was truly concerned about losing his money he wouldn't be giving 30% of it every year to charity.
His money, his choice... But Obama wants US to give OUR money to those who don't want to do for themselves. That's called socialism!! I think it's time that people start voting for what's best for the COUNTRY first then everything else will fall into place. Unions for Unions !! (just an example)
And Obama never changes his tune does he? Yes he does.
Charlene Schmitz, a 57-year-old former teacher at Leroy High School in Alabama, was convicted in February 2008 of enticing a 14-year-old student for sex. She still faces state charges of rape and sodomy for allegedly having sex with a student.
Despite the conviction, Smith wasn't fired until May of that year and continued to collect a paycheck while in prison until November 30, 2009, because state law mandates that teachers who appeal their termination continue to be paid until a hearing determines whether the firing was justified. To avoid self-incrimination, those hearings can't be held until the court cases have been decided.
Washington County schools CFO Larry Moss told AL.com that Smith received $164,493 in salary and retirement benefits since being suspended in August 2007.
"That's money we could have certainly used for something else," he told the Associated Press.
Tammy Clinton, a 39-year-old teacher at Farnell Middle School, has been charged with two counts of lewd and lascivious molestation and two counts of lewd and lascivious conduct after allegedly forcing a 14-year-old student to touch her breasts, fondling his buttocks, and enticing him to leave the campus twice so they could commit sexual acts.
Police said Clinton admitted to the accusations after her arrest, the Orlando Sun-Sentinel reported. She is banned from school grounds but will continue to receive her paycheck pending a complete investigation.
Sara L. Strahm, a 28-year-old special education teacher and varsity basketball coach at Pike High School in Indiana, was arrested in December on charges of child seduction for her alleged relationship with a 17-year-old female student.
Strahm pleaded not guilty to the charges, but police said she admitted to the relationship, according to various media reports.
Strahm is on paid leave as she awaits trial.
Obama is a failure. And he will not be reelected.

Obama care, the ACA, adds 21 new taxes and fees, to Americans.
Obama lied about the death of Ambassador Stevens .In Libya, and continues to lie. About his death.
Schminken: He does give 30%; however, that did NOT go to a charity. It went directly to the Mormon church, which uses it for church business; i.e., sending young men on missions each year, etc. It doesn't go to help anyone, not even their own congregation. I have a niece who is married to a Mormon, and they were having major problems for a while, but the church would not help them.....they gave them food from time to time, but did not help them in any other way.
the great divider...
There was a sexual harrassment issue in one of my town's elementary schools and one of my children was a witness to one of the events. As I got further involved in that case and in the similar problems in schools across the nation, I learned a very simple truth and have told it to people often.
'If there is not a single instance of sexual harassment going on in the schools of your particular town, it is almost certain that there is a harassment problem in one of the towns that borders your town.'
What finds it's way into the newspaper is only the tip of the iceberg. And I do agree that the great majority of teachers are not involved in this...just like one would say about the majority of priests and boy scout leaders. But...like the bankrobber responded when he was asked 'why' he robbed banks..."that's where the money is" applies to other situations too.
Obama's employment czar, Jeff Inmelt, CEO of GE. Has sent 28.000.00 US jobs to China, in the last several years. GE under Inmelt, has paid no Federal income tax for years.
Right after GM went though, a structured bankruptcy, and received a bailout of 60 billion US tax dollars. They opened several auto manufacturing plants, in China, and western Europe, not the US.
Risk...
Your facts about Mr. Inmelt are pretty much true...but why would it matter to Mr. Obama, he barely shows up for the 'Jobs Council's' weekly meetings anyway.
The GM plants opened in China are to build cars for sale in China it's fastest growing market not to ship back here. GM is an international company that also builds cars in Europe for that market. Most cars GM builds for the American market are made in the U.S. Inmelt sending 28,000 jobs to China doesn't disqualify him for a job advising on how to create jobs. Bill Gates company has over 1 million Chinese employees but that doesn't mean he doesn't understand business. Blame republicans for blocking Obama's plans to give tax breaks for those creating jobs here and penalizing those who send them over seas. Strange you people will bash Obama for hiring someone for outsourcing jobs then vote for someone running for president whose done the same. Hypocrite much?
Obama the Great Divider,
I say this somewhat out of a twisted attempt at humor and know it is a bit of an unpopular opinion......with women anyway...most men who ever had a crush on a high school teacher will probably agree but I won't speak too much for them. ...but what you are talking about in comment 3.5 is a double standard I am willing to accept. I think it is way way less damaging for a female teacher to engage in this behavior with a teenage male student than the other way around. I can only speak of my own desires in high school but there were a couple of female teachers I would have followed around like I was a pet dog...lol. I never missed school on Friday....jean day for teachers...Ms. Presley....still remember those days....sigh....good times. Back to point, wrong of the female teachers but not very damaging to a teenage boy with raging hormones...since that is basically and literally ALL most of us normal healthy teenage boys ever thought about....I know I'm gonna get bashed for this statement but whatever.
as a 25 plus year member of the carpenters union i have to say that unions in their purest form are nothing but greedy, self involved organizations, that truly only care about what they can get for themselves. it doesn't t matter to them if the public sector unions cause states to go bankrupt, as long as they get what they want. they have over priced their own workforce in the name of greed. the construction and automotive industries and the teachers unions are prime examples of this. when these people start caring as much about the state of financial affairs for this country as much as they do about lining their own pocket books I'll throw my support behind them once again, until then neither they nor obama have my support in any way shape or form. there was a time when unions were necessary, an honest days pay for an honest days work, now it's nothing but pay me twice what I'm worth so i can give it to the union for political purposes. there's a reason many unions support the democratic philosophy, it's because they are just as corrupt and immoral as the party is, their hunger for power is unquenchable.
So when it comes time to negotiate, say, a higher wage in your union, you will be the first person to stand up and say, "No thank you"?
that is absolutely correct alaskagirl and let me explain why, i've been saying for many years that the union has actually priced me out of work. working in the skilled trades is a bit different then the way the teachers union operates but they are basically all the same in their philosophy. In the skilled trades i would go to work at a power plant in say Wyoming and when the job was over go back to my local to be sent to work on a casino in Vegas, these are all companies that took advantage of a qualified and experienced workforce then sent them home when the job was over, one thing we had was the ability to get rid of the dead weight, unlike say the teachers union. but as our wages increased and contractors costs increased these contractors were no longer able to compete against non union companies. so as the years went by i spent more and more time looking for work or waiting on the out of work list then i did actually working. what it boils down to is once in awhile you have to weigh whether or not you actually need that raise and whether or not it will put you even further out of the workforce. everyone deserves a decent wage and a safe working environment, and certain benefits, but not everyone is qualified to get those things, just belonging to a union does not in my opinion automatically make you qualified any more then obama is qualified to be president.
Alaska Girl,
Or put it another way, would you rather make $20.00 per hour and work 40 hours a week, or $40.00 an hour and work for 10?
You might make less per hour, but if you are working more hours per year, your salary is actually higher.
The teachers union is also it's own worst enemy. Because they demand more money (i live in an area where the average 10 year veteran teacher makes 100K a year), the taxes are going up and up, and because they keep going up the budgets are getting turned down. The way they find a balance is by making class sizes bigger because they can't afford the salaries of the teachers anymore. So who gets hurt? My kids. It's probably not easy for the teachers either. Not only that...but there are thousands of jobless people with teaching degrees walking around because the schools can't afford to pay more teachers. In the end, the teacher's union is actually making it harder to employ more teachers. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
i would rather work the 40 hour work week and make a fair wage then get over paid for 10 hours of work, maybe your thoughts on the subject are why many have the idea that union people are lazy, slice it any way you want to, unions have bred laziness, corruption, and a mindset that no matter what your doing you always deserve more for it. your always entitled to more of the pie but that pie is only so big, once you reach the point that there is no more pie left things come to a halt, hence the battle now with the public sector unions, obama's right hand man, the mayor of Chicago had to take on the teachers union there as well, funny when even the democrats have to admit the unions have gotten out of control.
And yet had unions never existed no one including those not in unions would benefit from such things as paid holidays, 40 hour work weeks. paid vacations, sick leave and 1 1/2 for over time. Some unions have pushed too far but it's up to those representing business or government to hold them to reasonable demands.
this is true Larry unions have done a lot of good in the past, no one i think disagrees with that. the greed specifically in public sector unions has simply gotten out of control.
Hard to care what most of the teachers think. Outside of a minority of very good teachers most of them don't even want to work very hard at all! I'm sure that ticks some people off but my thought is that you know the business. Good teachers want to make a difference regardless of the political winds and will adapt to anything to do what they love. Only the ones who don't really want to work that hard have the biggest mouths. The good teachers are wondering how they can continue to do what they love regardless of the sloppy politics that affect them......from the left AND the right.
To all you good teachers who will forge ahead because of your passion, Thank you, thank you, thank you! You have had a huge impact in my life. All you slacker teacher; kids aren't stupid. They know who really cares about them and who only cares about lunch time, half day fridays, and teacher days every two weeks. The rest should change jobs. If it is so terrible and you can't tough things out in the interest of the children....FIND ANOTHER JOB! Denying children of valuable school time like the actions of the teachers unions in Chicago did shows exactly who you care about. Seriously, here in Florida our kids are lucky to have a single 5 day week period. That is not workforce prep!
I never listend to any of my teachers...why start now.
That really explains alot.
Man, these guys are all over you Bob! I've been way more snarky and nothing....guess I should stick to the one liners if I want to ruffle feathers.....lol. These peeps can't argue with the raw truth anyway so I shouldn't be surprised.
Carry on anyway soldier. The truth is in your words however obscured by fog they be. I'm with ya! I was hell in school too and if it weren't for the patience and hard work of the teachers who cared about me, I would be in a bad way these days. They were the ones whos class you would get up every day just to spend an hour listening to their wisdom. The ones who didn't care about us?....we kids ALL knew who they were...and we didn't care about them either.
I wish they would fight just as hard for better education and teachers as they are for this, maybe it would make a difference in the schools.
Bennys, Bennys, Bennys, Tenure, Tenure, Tenure, Pension, Pension, Pension....Try TEACHING the children for once instead of worrying so much about how much you're gonna get when you retire.
You're name says it all,ROCKHEAD. There was a time when teachers lived with their students families and were also responsible for stoking the family fire and cleaning because of the idea of the day that teachers should teach for the "love" of the profession.
Teachers don't even make a living wage when they first start out. The only benefit a teacher gets are their retirement benefits. Don't speak on which you don't know, idiot.
Newsflash....most jobs start you off low on the totem pole and are barely living wage. That's why many 20 somethings live at home with their parents right after college. Depending on where you live, teachers do very well... In my area of the US teachers start off making approximately $45k a year and in 10 years make $80-110K a year (depending on district and amount of extra classes they've taken). I know in my district there are some teachers who've been working for almost 20 years making $140K. Not too shabby!!! I know it's not like this everywhere...but in places like CT, NY, NJ and CA...it's common. Unfortunately, people blame the "greedy teachers" for the rise in our taxes, when in fact it's their union we should be blaming. I know many teachers who hate standing outside picketing, who DON'T vote democratic even when their union tells them to do so, and who don't like the restrictions their union puts on them. For instance, even if a teacher WANTS to stay after school to help a student, there is a limit the union puts on their time. The union actually tells them they're not allowed to do MORE. Nice right? Unfortunately, these teachers have very little voice in their union and the higher-ups are only in it for themselves. Greedy Unions....
Nowhere on God's green earth should a public school teacher be making 140K a year or I say they are a huge liability, responsible for a ridiculous portion of our national debt and education most definetely should be privatized and up for competition! I don't think those numbers could possibly be correct red. Particle physicists and Aero-Space Engineers hardly climb that high in Pay in their entire career. You better check those numbers. I've met alot of teachers and know alot and none of them make anywhere near 100K a year. I'd even go out on a limb without researching and say that tenured college professors would be struggling to get to a number like that? Point me to the data you have that suggests salaries like that or I say you are full of something...lol.
Hey Ed...I spent 3 years teaching at a charter school for $26k/yr....no bennies, no retirement, no insurance. The hardest job I ever loved. I had to leave to provide for my family. But I will tell you one thing....I would never even contemplate not going to work and teach my students on account of financial matters. So yeah, I do know what I'm talking about.
And by the way, the screen name is purposefully inane just to see who is simple minded enough to utilize it in a contra-positional posting. You bit.
All you people complaining about the unions need to realize that those unions allow you to make a living wage. Your employer would be paying you minimum wage w/o the union. As for the one who said he never listened to his teachers anyway, well, that shows. I am frightened by the sheer numbers of people in this country who are completely devoid of any common sense.
Kathryne, as a union member I've been hearing this mantra for many many years, obviously there was a time when unions were necessary, that time has long passed, now the unions are nothing more then a political machine, the lobbyists and activists are not there for the betterment of the workforce only to make the unions stronger. they now have a stranglehold on government that is unacceptable. the teachers hold their students hostage and use them as a bargaining chip rather then just do the job they were hired to do. job protection is a big part of this, it's always been my experience that the best way to protect your job and to get fair wages and benefits is to do it well...
Kathryne...
What frightens me about the number of people "devoid of common sense" is one simple issue...they vote ! And much worse...we have a political party that begs for their votes.
Kathryne: Sad to see how truly blind and mislead you have become due to the Unions. The Unions have long ago outlived their usefulness.
Stay home this election & don't vote, please.
If all the unions were to disappear out of America, how fast do you think the wages go down, sick leave disappear and vacations cut back, and hours extended without overtime?
Please everyone get out and vote. It is your right, your Constitutional right. This year many Republicans have tried to take that away from us. Colorado might have succeeded for many voters. Scott Gessler should be tared and feather and ran out of town. Some of you want to take this country back, I'm all for taking it back so it would not be against the law to run Gessler out of town, and then we can reverse it back.
Unions are like the government these days..parasites.
Parasites die when they kill their host...evidently the unions aren't getting the memo..lol.
The iron workers union helped my mother when my father passed away on his way to work. They provided her with money every month. Although it was little to make up for the loss of my father it did put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. It provide me the opportunity to go to college and better myself. I am very grateful for our unions. We have seen the rich get richer and the middle class fade to poverty partially due to the fact we don't have strong unions anymore. Folks can say what they will, but I am a true supporter of the union and I have seen them work first hand.
Study History, Tennessee... The 'Middle Class fade' is due to a lack of another Industrial Revolution occurring in America.
1750-1830: rise of steam engines & railroads made for faster transit/travel in America
1870-1920: rise of electricity in homes, telephones, industrial growth, indoor plumbing gave Americans better access to jobs in Industrial Revolution & improved communications.
1960-2000: Age of Technology - computers, space travel, faster planes, more efficient cars, etc.
NOTHING has come along to replace the jobs lost in making the cheap crap that now comes from China, Mexico, and the rest of the world. Technology jobs in America now require specialized skills.
Everyone is missing the point when they speak of 'bringing the jobs back to America'.
REALITY CHECK: Politicians can boast & bluster all they want to - the jobs of old aren't coming back. Period.
Right on homie !! Finally , someone sees the real problem !! Man , you have to read through a lot of crap sometimes to get to the smart one..
Well said Homie.
I add that politicians and policy only matter in the hard times. That is the only time people even latch on to politics. Seriously, have you noticed how involved the public has been in the last ten years? Nobody would even pay attention to these bozos if the economy were good and the jobs were there. Given that these jobs will never be coming back I wonder sometimes at how much worse things are going to get. I already have to drop a 50 at the pump and it doesn't even fill my tank up! Ten years ago I could fill my car up for 23 bucks! Full tank for 23 bucks! and now 50 doesn't even do it. Wild inflation and economic stagnation are completely responsible for our current predicament and a lack of industry of any kind is directly responsible for wild inflation and the stagnant economy. This is nothing new...it happens over and over...a cycle...the difference is as you say, there is no industrial revolution. Politicians have tried to "create" one trading on thin air with the whole carbon credit crap and so called "green" revolution...but they have failed miserably. The other thing unique about this current global recession is that this lack of an industrial revolution applies to the whole world. It is like humanity has reached peak production....it is kind of scary really how we are blindly trudging on into the unknown. I sincerly hope that the space industry gives us a boost....cautiously optomistic.
I believe most in the room claiming to be union are not. Yea they are political and always have been. They know what party helps the common man..
The Democratic Party takes from men that have and gives to lazy men that haven't. It's been that way for years.
Homie, yes you are a clown. But to reply to your statement...Bullshlt.
No more so then republicans, the only difference is where they spend the money they want to take. The delusion from those on the right is they're the only ones paying taxes or that only they have the right to decide how our tax moneys spent. Democrats are for helping the blind, crippled, poor and republicans want to spend 100 billion a year on a new drug plan, 200 billion a year in increased military that even our top military people say is uneeded. I pay taxes and no republican ever asked me if I supported their spending or the billions they spend on pork for their districts every year. Ryan giving billions to special projects in his district is as much redistribution as democrats supporting social services spending.
well Tennessee i received my journeyman's card through the rocky mountain regional council of carpenters, local 184 salt lake city Utah, i transferred my card to local 706, flint Michigan in 1999 while i cannot speak for everyone that claims to be union i can attest to the fact that i have been a card carrying member for over 25 years. so trying to discredit those that have union affiliations that don't adhere to your ideal is simply immature and a feeble attempt to justify your position. simply stated not all union membership is lead blindly by the nose to the democrats way of thinking, there are actually those of us that care more about our country then our pocket book, I was almost blackballed by my local business agent for refusing to display a yard sign for Al Gore when he was running for president, and i say almost because i had friends higher up that would not allow him to put me out of a job. So you may preach the union mantra all you want i've had years of experience with it and came to realize that MY opinion mattered more then the unions and i won't be bullied into voting the way they want me to.
Go figure! All the people who have union contract jobs are pushing for obama. This is the height of corruption! A bunch of lazy entitlement minded people with benefits that people in the private sector can only dream about promoting their corrupt agenda to continue living off the backs of the taxpayers with no accountability to the taxpayers.
What would you have us do, USA idiot, go back to the days of child labor, 14 hour workdays, and 6 day work weeks. Every work benefit that makes your miserable life worth living came from the blood sweat and tears of union workers.
Ed: please see a doctor - your intestines are full & the @!$%#e is backing up to your head.
LABOR LAWS are in place to prevent any such return to the past days of child labor & 14 hour days.
Cut the crap & stop spewing the Union-repeated lies...
And Homie da clown- who do you think is responsible for getting those labor laws passed, you idiot.
That's right- UNIONS
Unions have brought this country down
Dude, shows your lack of critical thinking skills and knowledge of American history. Unions are responsible for the middle class in this country, read your history! If it wasn't for unions, we'd all be working 14 hour days for 99 cents an hour and our kids would be working right along side of us.
Know of which you speak before you make your ignorance plain to everyone.
Ed, love your postings. However, Homie and O the great divider, are not employed and if they are, they are getting the bare minimum wage. They know nothing of the history of the United States in the 1920s and the 1930s. In fact, they know nothing.
@Troy1101.....You are absolutely right. I also feel that the best way to improve our educational system to to ban these unions. All they do is protect the bad teachers from being fired. Several years ago, my wife attended a math teachers conference. Several of the teachers in attendance who had Masters degrees or higher didn't know what a polynomial was. She refuses to join any teachers organizations that support unions.
@BobW.....exactly my thinking.
Fu*king Unionized teachers are the ruin of our students.
So calling teachers who educate your kids, policemen who keep you safe, firemen who save you from an accident, or men and women risking their lives everyday to better you interstate system corrupt? Yea, they are all living so well off your so called entitlements.
Teachers are there to present the information and explain to the children what is required to learn the subject. It is up to the student to have a desire to learn. Dumping money into teachers and the school system and promoting kids that haven't learned isn't working so far.
Looks like the republican bloggers have made it to all the rooms.. Good work on spreading untruths about unions.. Maybe you all can prevent any wealth from going to the middle class and push them on into poverty!
JUst wondering why you would champion the denizens of the worst public education system in the world at the highest cost per capita? Maybe because the are deluded obambots? America is sick of hearing about union demands.. especially in the public sector.
Delusion would be the idea of supporting a candidate that will cut education can improve it. All that talk about Romney's schools being number 1 was due to a billion dollars in 1994. People have the right to organize. Give me a union worker over some drugged out scab or illegal any day!
I have been a member of unions in the past and I am an Independent voter.
For someone to deny that some unions are not corrupt or are not always beneficial to workers is clearly a conscientious agent of strong arm union bosses or entirely ignorant.
Proudamerican- really!?! the worst educational system in the world!?! really!?! Is that why the US has the largest population of foreign students going to college in America?
You're obviously an uneducated idiot who is speaking out his backside.
" Better to keep one's mouth shut and be thought a fool, than open one's mouth and leave no doubt"
Ed is the poster-child of talking out the ass.
Your lack of education is apallingly apparent, Homie. You obviously don't know of that of which you speak.
How old are you anyway? Playing hookey from school, hmm?
Apparently clown school is out for the day.
Unions are out for themselves. They are greedy like Odumba. Viva Romney White Power!!!
The Clinton's and the Kennedy's have dropped out of President Obama's re-election campaign. Before you vote ask yourself -can I wait 4 more years for the hope and change that I was promised 4 years ago? In every age group - 8 years is a long time.
What are you talking about,Will? "The Clintons and Kennedys have dropped out of the reelection campaign". Are you kidding? Are you blind? President Clinton and Caroline Kennedy had major roles at the Democratic convention. Clinton gave the best speech at the convention.
...but the Clintons & Kennedys are nowhere to be seen now. They were only towing the party line, kinda like Union supporters. The Clintons/Kennedys know when to cut their loses & leave Obeyme & Uncle Joe at the curb.
Really Homie, is that why President Clinton is travelling to all those swing states, stumping for the President.
You're obviously drinking the FOX Kool-Aid
1
Why then does Romney say that it will take him 8 to 10 years when the economy is already on the upswing?
MTWEN,
Don't you know why every president says that fixing anything takes 8 to 10 years? It means they can take abolutely no responsibility for what happens during their presidency. They can ALWAYS blame the last guy.....and that applies to both parties. They are actually the same in my opinion about fiscal responsibility...all either wants to do is spend spend spend our grandchildrens country away...they just simply disagree with what they want to spend our grandchildrens money on. It will never change until both parties are displaced by one that is more responsible...and that will not happen until the American people are ready to chew on the truth.....the problem with this country is no farther away than each of our bathroom mirrors! Until we all unite against both of these sleezy organizations things will always remain the same right up to the edge of the cliff when they will both let us fall and they will, both parties members mind you, dissolve into history to resurface again and again.
Why does Romney say 8 to 10 years?
Unlike Obama who said; I'll have this thing up and running in 4 years, and Romney slapped him in the face with it 3 and a half years later.
No one will be able to throw in back in Romney's face when he goes for re-election in four years. If he gets elected.
It's called can do Confidence? No? maybe covering all your bases?.......NO! NO! It's called covering your A$$
I'll say! ... Here in FL my high school freshman had to sit through a band class where the teacher did nothing but talk about why people should vote for Obama. These are 14-17 year old kids who can't even vote. I'm all for talking about government and the political process, but ANY discussion needs to be unbiased and nonpartisan. Teachers can't shove their views down kids' throats simply because the kids are held hostage in their class for 50 minutes.
Watching the Waffle. And I remember sitting in school in the forties and the teachers did the same thing. So what. My dad was a democrat and I decided I wanted Dewey just to piss off my dad. Well, in my 73 years I have learned a lot and one of the lessons is that the Republicans care nothing for the people of the United States as a whole. As a far left Democrat, I follow the teachings of Christ much closer than the so called Republicans Conservatives. The Bible is only a very good tool to learn to live by and guidelines as to what God would like to put forth.
Do not ever think for a minute that there are a lot of left Democrats that are good Christians.

2....?
Kidding of course Larry. I get ya. Not a democrat but completely disagree with slightly old there. Slightly old, stop stereotyping. I already told Ed it is dangerous and it blinds you from the truth...yeah yeah..he didn't believe me either. He started assuming things about me....which is....well, also slightly dangerous and blinding.
With teachers like these, it's not difficult to understand why our nation's education rank continues to plummet compared to the rest of the civilized world.
North Dakota has an unemployment rate of 3% - North Dakota is a Republican state and they have taken charge of their resources. Nevada has an unemployment rate of close to 20%. Harry Reid should not spend 1 minute on a national election - he should spend every minute trying to figure out change for his state. Look at your own state before you vote - how much longer are you going to hope for a job? Can you wait out another 4 years for the hope and change that President Obama promised 4 years ago?
You will never see prosperity there. The Democrats have found out over the years that constituents are just happy with promises rather than real solutions. The wave of re-election fever during this campaign is testimony to that fact.
North Dakota has low unemployment because of the Bakken oilfields and nothing else. You could elect a clown governor and it would stay the same. Typical right wing ignorance. A republican is president 8 years and it's not his fault when the economy collapses but a republican is elected governor and it's his brilliance and has nothing to do with the biggest oil discovery in decades.
It is criminal that Unions get to coerce money "contributions" from all teachers while spending money for a partisan politician favored by a few in the organization. This legal extortion is not unlike that what was conducted by the mob upon small merchants.
Good teachers don't need a union to protect there job, unions need a politician to protect their's!
If Obama was such a clear choice, why the desparation for influence?
If MSNBC declares Obama the winner before the election is over, then why is there such an urgency?
Obama is going to win and the rest of the country loses...AND now since the SCOTUS has declared Obamacare a "TAX"....my taxes went up....great...just great....I was already poor and now I am going to be poorer...thank you POS POTUS!
Alex D: Our president did NOT call the Obamacare a "tax;" this was completely changed by the Supreme Court in order for them to legally approve it. You need to do some research before you comment.....President Obama never meant this to be a tax in any way, shape, or form!! This can be blamed solely on the Supreme Court.
If you have no insurance and have to pay this tax then it's one less leach on society. Sorry I don't want to pay taxes or higher insurance if you get sick and go to the the emergency room. Quit being a leech and pay your own way.
Obamacare, imposes 21 new taxes and fees on Americans.
Working Americans who have SS/SSDI/Medicare/Medicaid deducted from their pay checks are already paying for insurance
Yeah...right...teachers in their union are thinking of the kids...sure...
If they are thinking about the kids' futures, why are they OK with saddling them with ObamaDebt?
Union teachers are thinking of one thing & one thing only - their own future (guaranteed job & pension).
Let us not forget that our Children's SAT scores have been free falling for the last 40 years. Teachers generally teach because they can't or won't compete for jobs in the market like the rest of us
You said it right Comrade. Unfortunately most of the people in this country feel that way and first and for most is Obumbum.
Oh Kirk, Kirk, you are so misguided. The reason SAT scores have gone down isn't the teachers, it's the parents. Spoiling the !@#$ out of their little bundles of joy, not taking responsibility for their childs education.
Ya know, when I was growing up, my parents made sure I did my homework every night. I got to watch 1 hour of TV a WEEK; a half hour of which was my parents choice ( Undersea World of Jacque Cousteau).
Quit blaming your kids failings on teachers and look in the mirror, that's where the problem lies.
Ed - I don't disagree with you that the parents are more to blame than anything - but how does this fact grab you - Over 70% of teachers failed Math, Science, and English on a test designed for 10th graders. Reading out of book and administering tests out of book is not teaching - it is facilitating - anyone can do that.
repeat
damn those bubble gum errors
Wow kirk, you must have thought that was a REAL important post. Where did you get those statistics, do you have a link? I'd like to read that report and who put it out.
Comrads....Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, debt by Obama. Of course, we had no debt after Bush. Correction we had no debt before Bush 43. So we get rid of all the things that Republicans want to, we reduce the debt for our future children, but they will not have clean water, clean lakes and rivers, highways, etc. So debt free and sicker than a sick dog because of the earth. Shame Shame on you. Grow up.
If a Republican gets in, you can bet the first thing they will do is raise the debt limit.
Comrads....Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, debt by Obama. Of course, He is increasing the debt at three times the rate of Bush. Correction Obama is a greedy nigg_— So we get rid of all the things that Republicans want to, we reduce the debt for our future children, but Obama wants to payoff his union buddies. The republicans will give us clean water, clean lakes and rivers, highways, etc. So debt free is the way to go. This is the way to save the earth. Shame Shame on you Odumbsh+t. Grow up.
If the Democrats continue on this path, you can bet the first thing they will do is raise the debt limit.
These are the same dirt bag teachers that went on strike recently instead of teaching in the classroom like their being paid to do. And we wonder why our nation races toward Socialism. ITS TIME FOR A CHANGE!!
pgard, what an nut you seem to be. Not the same teachers at all. Do you not think 43 kids to a classroom is the way to go. Children cannot learn under that condition. You know nothing where our nation is added. I do if it under Romney and Ryan.....do the hole. Face first.
Obama/Biden 2012
Hillary/Brown 2016
A teachable child will learn regardless of how many children are in the classroom slightlyold and a bit dumbo.
A teachable child will pay attention to what they are being taught, take good notes, study the material, desire a good mark on a test and not space out for 30 minutes while the teacher, good teacher mind you, is teaching! I have children. They have a natural desire to succeed. This desire is not within alot of children. I remember my high school days. I am not as old as you evidently. It was always the smart a$$ idiots, jokers and potheads that failed. It is a natural order I think. It weeds out the idiots. Thank god the higher up I went in my education the less of them I saw....for obvious reasons.
By the way, I've been reading your posts. I bet you and Ed get along just fine together. You both think anybody with a counterpoint is an idiot....alot like those idiots, jokers and potheads I remember from high school. Stop bashing everybody who disagrees with you. It makes you sound ignorant.
