A majority of social media users believes President Barack Obama did better in this week's foreign policy presidential debate than Republican nominee Mitt Romney did, according to NBC Politics' computer-assisted analysis of almost 1 million posts during and after the debate.
The data indicate that Obama's attack line about "horses and bayonets" Monday night had less effect than was presumed in the immediate post-debate media analysis — and may even have hurt Obama as much as it helped him, once Romney partisans widely circulated rebuttals from conservative-leaning commentators.
But more commenters cited Romney's frequent agreements with Obama as evidence that he had nothing new to offer on foreign policy, helping Obama's advantage grow as time has passed.
NBC Politics analyzed 988,000 post-debate posts on Twitter and Facebook using a tool called ForSight, a data platform developed by Crimson Hexagon Inc., which many research and business organizations have adopted to gauge public opinion in new media. It isn't the same as traditional surveys, which seek to reflect national opinion; instead, it's a broad, non-predictive snapshot of what's being said by Americans who follow politics and are active on Facebook, Twitter or both at a particular moment in time, and why they're saying it.
Overall, a slim majority favored Obama in comments posted through 1:30 p.m. ET Wednesday:

That works out to a 51 percent to 49 percent advantage among people who expressed a clear preference for either candidate.

Explainer: Can you scientifically quantify social media opinion?
Favorable sentiment swung noticeably as media commentators weighed in with their arguments. For example, Obama initially held a slim advantage the day after the debate:

A visual representation of the topics people discussed overnight and into early Tuesday morning indicates that people reacted to broad impressions:

But after commentators and analysts began being heard on the morning television news shows and read in the morning papers, people developed firmer positions as the day progressed. A different visualization breaks out the specific topics people talked about Tuesday — not only Iran and other foreign policy issues, but also economic issues:

People who favored Romney were impressed by his firmness and his arguments that the administration mishandled the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, last month:

People who favored Obama, by contrast, picked up on both candidates' insistence on pivoting toward the economy:

What appeared to have been a key moment in the debate came when Obama responded to Romney's assertion that the U.S. military was weaker today than it had ever been, specifically citing what he characterized as the shrinking U.S. warship fleet. Obama's rejoinder lit up Twitter and Facebook.
You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed.
The Hill's Karen Finney and author Goldie Taylor discuss President Barack Obama's "horses and bayonets" debate line.
On Tuesday, however, media organizations — among them The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times — and conservative commentators began running the numbers, and they largely concluded that Obama's zinger wasn't completely justified.
One article in particular, by the commentator AWR Hawkins on the conservative site Breitbart.com, gained heavy traction among conservative commentators on social media, being cited hundreds of times by Romney defenders as evidence that Obama didn't know what he was talking about:
Obama supporters began a counterattack Wednesday, widely circulating Rush Limbaugh's remarks Tuesday:
In fact, a lot of people on our side thought he agreed with Obama too much. A lot of people on our side didn't like that debate last night, folks, I'll just tell you. If my circle of friends is any indication, a lot of people thought Romney got his clock cleaned, didn't like it at all, think the election's lost. I'm not kidding you.
The topic dominated pro-Obama discussion late Tuesday through midday Wednesday:

NBC Politics and Crimson Hexagon Inc.
Commentary like that appeared to be taking a toll. Overall, Obama's advantage remained within a couple of points. But then there's the chart just for Wednesday:

I'm not certain about the comment that Romney looked like the President? Romney looked Presidential, while the imcumbent frequently looks like a comunity organizer, who has never risen above the chicago politician.
Horses and Bayonets. Horses are used - rarely. Bayonets were used, I think the last time was in Vietnam. Ask the multitudes of servicemebers who served in Iraq and Afghanistan how many times they had to fix bayonets and prepare to defend their very own lives. Ahhh - I don't recall one report of any unit having to fix bayonets, and I may be wrong, but I don't think so. So the President's analogy is correct.
Agreeing with the President doesn't show that Romney is "Presidential"...it does show that he lacks leadership. He was not willing to take an opposing opinion on foreign policy because he knows that to do so, he would have gone against conventional public opinion and would have lost he election easily. Romney also needed to soften his tone...because polling shows that women don't like aggressiveness.
There are many more instances of Romney's lack of integrity, credibility and leadership that I would like to discuss, but, I would be writing all night and there isn't enough space to write it. So I'll leave you all with what I think is most important for me as a military service member, as a United States Marine:
Romney does not rate to be President. ROMNEY DOES NOT RATE TO BE COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF ANY MILITARY SERVICE MEMBER WHAT SO EVER.
So tired of all of this b.s. Petty nonsense, etc. Just get on with this election.
You know using social media is not the way to go since the Republicans are so adept at using trolls some of which were spouting off about the big Ramney win even before the "debate" was over. I put debate in quotes because these are not debates and or not scored as such it is a beauty contest more or less. Zingers do not win debates facts so and how they are presented in a concise staright to the point manner. In that case even the first debate belongs to Obama on his presentation even though in a beauty contest he lost. You cannot ever make statements that do not have facts attached to them in a real debate. Romney and his partner refuse to tell the people what their plans are because they will be unpallatable for the vast majority of the American public. We let Bush stammer through the election process offering vague inuendo with no facts to back his claims then get into office thinking he had some kind of mandate and go willy nilly off of a cliff. I hope the American public wakes up to this because if it works for a lame like Romney who was a failyre at Governing in Mass a failure at running for the senate etc it can work for any stooge in either party. Remember Norquist has said all they need in the WH is someone to sighn the terrible legitlation the right wing nuts are prodeucing.
And "ships that go under water" are boats, not ships. Anyway, judging Social Media trends leave off seniors who don't use it and rednecks who don't care about it. Of those groups, 90% will vote for Romney.
So you say, Bluesail or whatever you call yourself...sail away with that comment. He didn't say there were none used, he said there were less. You people really have it bad. Please go to sleep.
Those who insist in putting Romney into office will only find themselves to blame when the AntiChrist and his Republican cronies gets us into another expensive Middle East war. This time, however, your families will be drafted because the troops serving are exhausted. Another expensive Republican war will cripple the economy further. Obama is cleaning up the huge mess the Republicans made. Those of you who are voting because of race - we have a half-white Irish guy against a Mexican immigrant. Romney's father and grand-father were born in Mexico and his son, Tagg, looks pure Mexican. So the racists are a confused lot. Even the Mormons are backing Obama. The Salt Lake Tribune called Romney a SHAPE-SHIFTER.
I am pasting a post from Sandy Radcliffe who, I think, did an excellent job of reporting. See Sandy’s writing below:-
“Tagg Romney's Company Misled Reporters About Its Relationship With Ponzi
Scheme–Linked Firm Lee Fang on October 12, 2012 - 8:10 PM ET
The private equity firm run by Tagg Romney—Mitt’s eldest son, misled reporters
last year about its involvement with a company run by men accused of taking
part in a multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme.
Last year, I reported that Tagg had formed a business partnership with several
North Carolina investors who are still facing a lawsuit for receiving bonus pay
for selling CDs as part of the $8 billion Stanford Financial Group Ponzi
scheme.
In a nutshell, Tagg helped these investors form a company—called Solamere
Advisors, a nod to Tagg’s firm Solamere Capital—shortly after their boss, Allen
Stanford, was caught by law enforcement for his elaborate Ponzi fraud.
When I interviewed him in Las Vegas, Tagg told me that his associates were
“cleared” of any wrongdoing associated with the Stanford Ponzi scheme. Court
documents directly contradict Tagg and show that the lawsuit has not been
dismissed.
The New York Times followed up on my story with its own report and confirmed
that Tagg’s business partners received incentive pay for selling bunk Stanford
CDs. They wrote about one Stanford victim, a local Charlotte businessman and
philanthropist named Herman Stone. Stone was pressured by Brandon Phillips, an
executive working now for Tagg’s firm, into putting $2 million into a
fraudulent Stanford CD and lost everything.
Solamere Capital attempted to distance itself from the story by claiming that
their business was not actually connected to the Ponzi-tainted firm, Solamere
Advisors. In a statement to ABC News, they claimed that their managers, not
Solamere Capital itself, were involved (emphasis added):
“It is inaccurate to suggest that Solamere Capital made an investment in this
firm [Solamere Advisors]. Solamere Capital was approached to invest in a new
wealth management firm being launched by these three individuals. After
extensive due diligence, Solamere Capital decided not to invest because the
business was at an early stage and did not meet our investment criteria.
However, Spencer Zwick, Tagg Romney and Eric Scheuermann each own a minority
stake in the business as individual investors.”
However, Solamere Capital’s statement, provided to ABC News, is false.
Disclosures from the Securities and Exchange Commission show that Tagg’s
company indeed maintains ties with the Ponzi-linked firm, Solamere Advisors.
The claim that Solamere Group didn’t invest directly in Solamere Advisors, the
firm employing former Stanford employees, appears to have been an attempt to
shield Mitt Romney. Mitt invested about $10 million into Tagg’s Solamere
Capital venture, which would suggest Mitt has a direct financial relationship
with folks involved in a Ponzi scheme. That’s because Solamere Capital pools
together investment money to co-invest in other companies
Is there anything this Dirt Bag won't do? So the Caymen Island Accounts are not
just his, he is also helping his kid to rip off people.”
Remember the quote from Newt Gingrich about Romney? “How can you debate
someone who lies about everything?”...more
.
Under Gov. Romney, Massachusetts fell to 47th
out of 50 in job creation:
Before Romney’s time as governor, Massachusetts
ranked 36th out of 50 in job creation, but over the course of his tenure the state ranked a dismal 47th out
of 50—even as the national economy was growing. The Bay State only beat Michigan,
Ohio, and Louisiana—which was still recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Gov. Romney created or raised over 1,000 taxes and fees:
Though he promised he wouldn’t raise taxes as governor, he increased taxes and
fees by as much as $750 million per year, leaving the average taxpayer to pay
an extra $1,227 in state and local fees and taxes. During his first year in office, Romney
raised fees on milk, driver’s licenses, hospitals, nursing and barber licenses,
and even on the blind.
Gov. Romney left behind a huge budget deficit:
Romney broke his pledge to balance the budget and left his successor, Gov.
Deval Patrick, with a $1 billion budget deficit. Long-term debt increased by
16% over Romney’s four-year term, and he left Massachusetts with the highest
debt per person in the nation.
I would NEVER vote for Rob-Me; after one term as Massachusetts Governor,
the People of the State of Massachusetts decided the same thing, INCLUDING
REPUBLICANS!!!! END OF QUOTE.

Glad you took the time to educate the masses. Sometimes I think those Romneyites have their head in the sand or they are typical T-partiers that want Obama gone no matter what the consequences, to heck with the U.S. they are spoiled kids who have to have their own way or they throw a temper trantrum. I really liked your post.
Obama/Biden 2012 4 more for 44
Obama was correct. We have less bayonets and less horses. He didn't say they weren't used anymore. Of course, in the world where facts don't matter (also known as the news media and the right wing bubble) what Obama said was a horrible slight to our enlisted men. Maybe next time they are ordered to charge with bayonets (hasn't happened since the Korean War) they will refuse to do so as they've been so insulted!!!!
Yawn.
We need less Obama.
Go find your brain its in the car wash
djbh and we could certainly use less of YOU. Bye Bye Now. You Betcha!
Read the other day, the Marines haven't even trained to use bayonett since 2010, when was the last time you heard of anyone being killed by bayonete? Those were hand to hand battle gear, with all the sophisticated stuff they have now, don't think they get that close to their enemy. Besides, that was not an insult anyway, to say 'we used less horses and bayonets' how do you figure that as in insult?
Marines are still taught the use of fixed bayonet during recruit training and is applied in the combat assault course. But you are right, I don't recall a unit having to fix bayonets in Afghanistan or Iraq...I may be wrong, just don't think so!
This is crap. The instant polls after the debate showed Obama beat Robney two to one among respondents. I thought Obama wiped the floor with Robney, who did nothing but either agree with Obama, or make miss leading statements and try to change the subject. Robney's statement that Syria was Iran's access to the sea proves Robney knows nothing about geography, or he just makes scripted, mindless statements that some shadow power feeds him. Apparently he never heard of the Persian Gulf? These polls are ridiculous. The American electorate couldn't possibly be that dumb!!
Obama made misleading statements as well. Check politifact. Most of Obama's false statements are about himself. He says things to try to make it look like he has done something good while president. Fact is - he has been a Jimmy Carter.
I want to know if this president was actually put in place due to Affirmative Action, put him on the job whether he knows how to do it or not!
Sorry Larsen1, I haven't heard affirmative action in action for many years now, thanks to you christian right that thinks giving a hand is handouts. Thanks for your support though..but President Obama doesn't need it.
Blueforsail. You're showing off your racist mentality. Obama looks professorial AND PRESIDENTIAL. Robney comes off as a slick used car salesman.
Did anyone hear Romeny say "after the election I'll have more flexibility"? These were Obama's words to Russia's Dimitri Mendev when he thought the mic had been turned off. A nice example of Obama's foreign policy and hidden agenda. Obama didn't know squat about foreign policy and he was elected president. This election is about the economy as it should be. If that isn't number one on every American's platter, then that American needs to reaccess their future.
No, but I DID hear Mitt say "Lebanon is Syria's outlet to the sea." Gosh, I knew all along that Mitt lived on a different planet than the rest of us.
And what is wrong with that statement. He is deferring action that obviously Russia wants to push so the next electd president can decide unlike Bush's setting the date from withdrawl from Iraq to protect Cehney's interests. BTW do you know who is doing the fracting in the states where they are extracting gas from rock? Halliburton which was pushed by Cheney same people who helped cause the Gul oil spill.
Mormons are just like Jehovah Witnesses.......both are religous cults!!!
Religion has nothing to do with the election. Any Democrat knows that we separate religion and state. We can elect an athiest if we want to. It is every American's choice and the choice is about capability. Romney is more than capable of doing at least a job as good as Obama has done. Not that that is a tall hurdle to jump.
LOL That makes me want to vote for Romney.
djbh:
Religion has nothing to do with the election.
Religion is what drives the republican party's agenda.
DMMLMFAO
At least they believe in something
bh-455602 and your brother djbh: Religion doesn't play a part? Well Why do we keep hearing about President Obama not being a christian? Or that he is "shake me hard now" a Mus*** ? I speak it not. eeeek? You can't have it both ways. But it's okay that Rmoney will be returning to planet "I forget the name" with a whole lot of teap's and consert's under his belt to become the biggest God on planet...what was that again> ROFL SMDH.

blueforsail, your 4 year old stale and contrived racist statement against the President is in lock step with the far-right lunatic mentality not to mention it barely reaches the intellectual thought process of a typical 4 year old child. Keep fooling yourself into believing Romney looked presidential. His performance was more along the lines of fraudulence and untrustworthiness.
And M. Alex, as far as the article is concerned it is so convoluted it would take a couple of JPL data servers to sort it all out. There's no 'here' here. I hope you didn't expect to collect a paycheck from this mangled piece.
ROMNEY'S TURN > What he said!
They say you always get what you deserve; and Americans, it appears, are about to get exactly the President they deserve. Dumbed down and polarized they're about to elect someone who appears to be more intellectually challenged than George "Dubya" Bush. No one should be surprised as faced with a similar IQ test in Y2K (an intellectual giant, Al Gore, vs Dubya they failed miserably.
The debate was basically a tie because Romney seemed in lock step as far as what he would do regarding Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, etc. etc. The only difference is Romney seemed to think that the world is going to listen to our positions if we puff out our chest and speak as though we are really the guy with the big stick. Everything Romney said included stipulations such as I would have done it sooner, I would have done it in a more forceful manner and we need to make sure everyone knows we're the big dog. The same guys who were advisers to Bush are on the Romney team so if you really want to know what his foreign policy will look like that might be a clue. One other point - Romney seems to believe that we shouldn't apologize for anything we do regarding America's waging of war or dealings with other countries so just color us the world's only perfect people and name us Romney's anomaly. When we run a prison and mistreat and humiliate the inmates, or we burn someone's religious books we will just chalk it up to the cost of doing business with those not as freedom loving and righteous as the good old US of A.
You're trying to make a distinction, without a difference! And there is a huge difference between the wrongful actions of a few individuals and a State policy, as in the case of the USA! Like the stupid utterrance of Sen. Atkin talking about "legitimate rape" and linking it to a republican platform!
Tell me something honest, that we can debate intellectually, otherwise, just preach to the congregates and let those words be their recital and recitation without suspicionl
Some big dog we are..Millions of troops overseas for ten years..Obama brings in one SEAL team for six hours and removes the sole reason we were there in the first place..We sound like Russia in the 80's,stuck in Afghanistan for ten years with nothing to prove for it.
Strange that Obama, who has been demonizing GW so much. with his recitals, that it was his policies that got us here, has continued and still carry out some of the same policies that he castigates the other side for: Guantanamo, Cuba, Venezuala; the middle east, Afghanistan and now the mess that didn't even exist when Bush was president; and on the home front and the economy, the Bush tax-cuts and the auto bailout that in fact started under Bush! Remember? Hollywood special effects works also in politics!
What part of Obama's speech did people did not understand? He said that the military does not use as many bayonets and horses today, he never said that the military don't use bayonets and horses anymore. If he was speaking Klingon I would understand these people ability to comprehend, but since he was speaking plain English I guess they must be either hate the man or plain stupid.....
I go with plain stupid.
Romney was just a few beads of sweat on his upper lip away from looking like Nixon. Loved the way he flip flops his position, really makes me want to vote for him...Hey is he considered part of the "undecided" group as in he is undecided about what he stands for. Oh and Barack did say "As many Bayonets and Horses" not NO BAYONETS AND HORSES - With all of the starbucks around you'd think the USA would be more AWAKE!
Oh and BTW the Columbus Dispatch headline yesterday was "Unemployment in Ohio lowest since 2008" This is on the heels of the MEGABLITZ of Romney ads here in Ohio stating that we're hurting because of the President. Ohio will Vote for Obama, you can count on it...(that is unless Husted tampers with the vote...Hmmmm that'd never happen would it???)
Why is somebody quoting breitbart.com or the Humbaugh®? Seriously...
What the President said was there are fewer horses and bayonets... Shoot, I suppose he could've said muskets, and some teabugged sort would claim there are still examples in military museums...
The only time Romney has told the truth during this entire campaign was at the Al Smith dinner where he admitted his style was to find the biggest strawman he could find and beat it to a pulp.
Affirmative Action put obummer in where he didn't know what he was doing or how to do it.
Now how do you know what Affirmative Action did, or did not do for Obummer. You would be perfectly satisfied if he were back in slavery. Admit it, come on don't be ashamed of your feelings.
All Romney did in this Foreign Policy Debate is, Endorse President Obama's Foreign Policy.
I have studied the Romney/Ryan website and the numbers Do Not Add Up.
2 Trillion more for Military and 5 Trillion in Tax Cuts. From Where? Loopholes? No Way.
Romney seems like a nice guy, But I Do Not Trust Him. He is a Champion Flip/Flopper.
Anyone stupid enough to vote for a President with as bad a record as Obama's deserves to loose their ass. 4 more years of that incompetent fool and there will be no business, no America as we know it. Romney is twice as smart, twice as close to real America and 3 times the man all around. He is our next President.
Rmoney gives a rats azzzzzzzzzzz about you clearshot.....anybody Crazy enough to vote for Rmoney and that eddie monster deserves to go to planet tulip...rofl
I beg to disagree with you. Romney may be smart, but, not twice as smart. He is nowhere near close to America, at least not close to ordinary people, he'd rather puke on an ordinary American than be concerned about them. The only thing that make him 3 times the man all around is the fact that he has four times the money, that he got from shipping jobs overseas and shutting down plants in America and causing thousands of hard working middle class Americans to lose their jobs, insurance, pensions and other benefits that they worked years for.. So much for your Mitt Romney.
@ Double_Jeopardy-Thanks for your input! We have had a family member in the the Marines and also the USAF. Romney reminds me of the Cheney, Rumsfield, Bush, Nugent bunch. After doing everything they can to avoid service, years later and all risk behind them, they become noisy sabre rattlers. There must be some sort of psychological common thread for their condition which springs from guilt. And they should be forever barred from holding public office! President Obama has proven to be a very worthy leader, and actually knows foreign policy. Intellectually he is far above most in Congress-and it shows. The Republicans in Congress have been brats- doing nothing but having hissy fits since Jan 09. And the US Navy would have to inform (educate) the Romney crowd that climate change exists and we have problems coming down the pike, if, God forbid, they won.
bh-455602 and your brother djbh: Religion doesn't play a part? Well Why do we keep hearing about President Obama not being a christian? Or that he is "shake me hard now" a Mus*** ? This is so stupid the demcrats say they won but the republicans say they did. So you bright citizens does this realy mean the winner of the debate is going to be a better president.? You have to think ahead who is going to be better for the country a man that needs a man who has been succesful in his life or a guy that did not do by his own saying get the important things done. He should be a one timer like he said himself. Use you head or do you need some one to blow more smoke up your a..?
Romney's comment simply confirms my opinion that he is out-of-touch! Out-of-touch - and unprepared - with reality. Out-of-touch with with middle-class Americans - he thinks middle-class means a family that makes between $200,000 and $250,000, and out-of-touch on foreign affairs - alienating our centuries-old alliance with Britain and Europe.
He doesn't realize the country is decades removed from the rhetoric he espoused.
It's real simple one reason Romney didn't do well is he doesn't want to, he only wants to manipulate your social security until America goes bankrupt and profit on the sell off.
Romney is not adept at foreign policy and will start another war, simplistic checker moves in a chess game, not smart to elect businessmen, Hoover was the last example, they are too selfish and only see one goal. I can say I'll create 12 million jobs but without facts and details you shouldn't believe me. Soory I'm not buying a pig in a poke.
Okay, first for those that think Obama is helping college students. The pell grant and student loans have been limited now. If you are trying to get a double major you will have to fight for eligibility. I know becuase I had to. We have the highest unemployement since the great depression. A junior senator with no military training and no sponsored bills to his name was elected president because he was young and charasmatic. Obamacare includes asking if there is a firearm in the home. If I am getting treatment for strep throat why do they need to know if I have a firearm in my home? There are alot of things under the radar and that people just don't care about including the "open mike with the russian president". Our country is hurting....BADLY. Obama is not the answer. Romney? Well a businessman in hard economic times or a lawyer....Which should run the country? Do a little thinking and not just because you are a democrat or republican look at what is going on and do a little research. Its time to fix the country not keep tearing it apart.
