Police: Nanny stabs 2 children in Manhattan home

An Upper West Side nanny stabbed a 2-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl to death inside their apartment Thursday afternoon before cutting her own throat, police said.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the mother of the children returned to her West 75th Street home after a swimming lesson with a third child, a 3-year-old girl.

The apartment was dark when the mother and daughter entered, and the mother went to look for her two other children, said Kelly.

"She goes downstairs to the lobby, assuming the nanny may have gone out with the children," Kelly told reporters in a briefing Thursday night. "She asks the doorman if in fact they have gone out, and he says 'No.' She goes back up, the apartment is dark, and she goes into the bathroom."

That's where she discovered her two children stabbed in the bathtub, Kelly said.

The nanny was on the floor of the bathroom with self-inflicted stab wounds to her throat. A kitchen knife was nearby.

Neighbors said they heard the mother's screams from her apartment as she called 911. After police arrived, a neighbor said the mother remained in the building's lobby, screaming hysterically and clutching her surviving child.

The 50-year-old nanny is in custody. She's hospitalized in critical condition.

Traffic around Columbus Avenue and 75th Street was heavily backed up as police and EMS responded to the initial call at about 5:30 p.m.

Why do these senseless things keep happening? When is mayor Bloomburg quit coddling the the nka and get these knives banned as they serve one purpose and one purpose only: to kill people. More importantly though, the murder of two children is certainly optimal, no matter how they were killed.

      #1.5 - Thu Oct 25, 2012 7:34 PM EDT

You know what???? At the rate we're going, we won't have many children left!!!! It's been one horrible story about children after another this week.

and yes, there IS something in the water...and the air...and the food. They're called toxic chemicals and they will kill people and make them crazy. I'm not exaggerating.

It's called sensational journalism. If 5 children are murdered every week in this country, statistically, how likely is it that your children will be murdered? Look at the big picture. Keep things in perspective. We live in a very safe country. Just remain vigilant and keep an eye out for scumbags, and you'll probably never have any problems.

I also agree with Intelligent & Independent. And I believe our plastics are poisonous. Pharmaceuticals are another toxic mess! How much do you want to bet the nanny was on some sort of pharmaceutical?

Then add violent TV, movies, music lyrics, video games, etc...and what you get is a desensitized population mixed with a ton of toxins thus creating psychos!

Yeah, who wants to bet the mother treated the nanny like crap? Never treat the help who have sole possession of your children like crap or they may just show you a thing or two.

Hopefully other people who act like we're still in slavery days take note.

It's not just in your water. It's in the foods you buy, the cans those foods are in, the drinks you buy, the plastics those drinks are in and on the receipts you receive when you pay for it all, it's in the air you breathe from the factory's around you on your drive to and from the store and the paints and other materials in your home and the drugs your doctors give you.

It isn't in the food, water, sex, drugs or rock n'roll. We are getting the impression of a tidal wave of murders because we keep hearing about them on the Internet and 24-hour news.

It only appears to be an epidemic of child killing going on. Fifty years ago, this stuff was happening just as much, but news was localized and regional. The whole country didn't hear about it. Now with cable TV's 24-hour news and the internet, EVERY crime gets global coverage.
Having said that, it seems the mother should have vetted that nanny more carefully. Somebody unhinged like that usually has red flags all over the place. It pays to be more observant and vigilant concerning your offspring.

I expect any kind of knife ban to work just as well as every gun ban has worked so far: It won't keep criminals and murderers from getting knives at all. But at least it might make the anti-knife people feel "safer".......

As a part of budget cuts, can we please start putting these violent criminals to eternal sleep immediately after conviction? Seriously. We cannot afford to house, feed and provide medical assistance to these low-lifes with our hard-earned tax dollars. That money could go a long way to aid this country in other much needed ways - such as infrastructure repair/upgrade, paying down the debt, etc.

I agree, but with their unlimited right to appeals, it actually costs more to convict with a death sentence than life in prison.. we need to reform the judicial nightmare first and go back to determining right and wrong, not legal rights or not....

...180 days for an appeal to process - after that; juice 'em.

On cases such as these two kids - just juice 'em. Same with both jackwagons in Colorado.

I agree. The nanny should've been shot on the spot, a bullet right to her head as if she was a zombie, and be done with it. Justice is done, society is protected, and tax dollars erstwhile spent on dealing with her would go to worthy causes. (But I'm mean. I wouldn't have shot her in the head right away; I would've pumped a few slugs into other parts of her first and make her suffer.)

If I would of discovered this..the nanny wouldn't be remotely alive in critical condition. I would kicked the total Bejesus out of her head. I couldn't imagine walking in on that..horrible! Hopefully she gets and stays in therapy for a while. Something like this wouldn't be that easy to recover from. Thankfully she still has 1 child left to be there for. I'm sure she will not be leaving it with anyone.

hehe, yes, ban everything that could ever be fashioned into a weapon to injure or kill others, including fists, feet, arms and legs....that'll solve ALL the violence problems we have today....

we would have people gnawing each other to death in that instance...

Face it people, the problems we have aren't caused by objects whether they are made to kill or not, it is PEOPLE who are the problem.

PEOPLE need to control themselves or be held accountable for the consequences of their actions, period.

The objects that the liberals love to blame for causing the problems can't defend themselves, and, merely obey the command of the human wielding them.

Last I checked it was impossible for an inanimate object to spontaneously go on a rampage.

Criminals have more rights then law abiding citizens! THAT is the problem. Everyone wants to file lawsuits and sue everyone and their brother over EVERYTHING. People want to cry that prisoners aren't treated fairly..... A) what in your mind is being treated fairly for murder, rape, stealing, etc. and B) they have it WAY nicer than anyone thinks. Of course they're going to tell everyone it's the most horrible experience ever, but it's not. They get 3 warm meals a day, clean clothes, clean sheets, a bed, warm place to sleep, television all day long, get to work out, get to hang out and chill and day long. Yeah sounds real rough to me!!

Bring back the death penalty for the murderers, and then for the short termers (that is so they wont want to go back to prison) make them get up at 5:00 every morning eat breakfast which would consist of hot bologna, eggs, and gravy, same for lunch, and then make them dig ditches all day, eat dinner and go to bed, no t.v. no work out rooms, mabe a few magazines, (no porn) and the bible to read and to bed by 8 or 9, I tell you the prisons will be less full.

I hope to god the family got the nanny from a regular service that screens people so the mom doesn't have have to blame herself. Sometimes these things can't be predicted such as a case of schizophrenia. If it turns out its a case of the mom getting someone for less money that didn't go through backround checks or an undocumented nanny, then she will never forgive herself. I really sympathize with this mother who lost two children at once. Terrible.

Murder is more likely from someone without mental illness, even an undiagnosed one. They are either out for revenge or are just douchebags.

I agree with Common Sense - 2004266...let the cops do their thing, put a case together and quickly put this scum bag down. I am free on the weekends if they need someone to do the deed. When people hurt kids/animals/defense-less/innocent people...PUT THEM DOWN ASAP!!! I dont want my tax payer $$ being spent on these scumbags...like I said if they cant find someone to put them down...I am free on the weekends and I will make sure they see true evil before they meet their maker. RIP to those kids and God be with that mother and family.

How do they know that the nanny's wound was self inflicted, and that she killed the children. Maybe she was defending them and herself against a burglar who killed the children and stabbed her as well, and ran off. Why didn't she leave the scene if she was the perpetrator.

It's not a cut and dried case but they also haven't posted all of the information either. If what they are saying is correct the reason she didn't leave the scene is the suicide attempt...

She attacked me also and I successfully defended myself! I didn't mean to break her neck. I'd take a couple defensive knife wounds for a measure of private justice.

Why not? It's not like it was circumstantial evidence. Two murdered kids and a crazy broad wielding a bloody knife seems straight forward to me. It's people like you who trample victims rights just because they no longer draw a breath. She took away the most important thing anybody could ever have or will ever have, a life.

And you're the reason I'm glad that most people still believe in rule of law and presumtion of innocence until proven guilty by a jury of their peers in a court of law.

I'd ask you exactly how you are so sure of yourself that you could convict the Nanny so quickly just by reading an internet story?

                          Lug66,

The article said "The nanny had a knife in her hand and a self-inflicted wound, the AP reported."

How is that a "a crazy broad wielding a bloody knife" ?

It's distortions like that that convict people before due process! What if she tried to fend off an attacker then picked up the knife while wounded to go defend the children. The point is, none of us have all the facts. We don't know the whole story yet.

God be with the children and the family!

You're absolutely right. We still don't know the full story. The nanny deserves her day in court with all within our legal power to say she's innocent, so those who make the claim she's guilty have to prove it (since those making a positive claim need to provide the burden of proof).

And after that, if she is found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, torture the See-You-Next-Tuesday slowly to death. Yup, I mean that: slow torture leading to death.

Sick or not, insane or not... the nanny deserves to be punished harshly so she cannot endanger anyone else.

Sick or not, insane or not, the nanny needs to be killed. She's a cold, calucating murderess and must be liquidated to protect human life. Even if she is sick or insane, she's Freddy Krueger and must be offed. This isn't about punishment, it's about removing things like her, sick, insane or whatever. And, yes, for those who are "mental health" advocates, people who are mentally ill and commit brutal murder must be extinquished. I work with mentally ill people, including those who are violent and murderous. I know what they're capable of and what must be done with them. My co-workers all agree.

hehe, yes, ban everything that could ever be fashioned into a weapon to injure or kill others, including fists, feet, arms and legs....that'll solve ALL the violence problems we have today....

we would have people gnawing each other to death in that instance...
